    Excellent optics, weird manual focusing

I'll keep this brief... This lens has excellent optics. It easily bests my Canon 24-105mm f/4.0 L lens at 40mm, hands down. This lens is much sharper across the entire image. The only down side to this lens is the STM system it uses for focusing. While STM is faster than the conventional motor used in the 50mm f/1.8 lens, it is still noisy enough to be heard on video. In addition, manual focusing only works when the camera supplies power to the lens, so when your camera goes to sleep between shooting images the focus ring doesn't do anything at all. It's easy enough to wake it back up -- just a half-press of the shutter button -- but something to be aware of. At f/2.8 maximum aperture, you won't get as shallow a depth of field on this lens as you will on the 50mm f/1.8 (which is considerably cheaper) but the image quality overall on this lens is significantly better. So if you're most concerned about sharpness, get this lens. If you're after a shallow depth of field and maximum bokeh, the nifty fifty is the better choice.

    Great with the Canon 70D

I use this with my Canon 70D. It works great. It is quiet and focuses VERY fast! Perfect for focusing quickly for pictures and action shots. But with Canon's focusing technology, it doesn't "hunt" for a focused image and it's autofocusing can actually be used in videos!

Although the uses are limited with this compact lens, it is a great lens to have in my camera bag. I love the results I get with it. It fits in my camera bag nicely and is great for portrait close ups. There are some issues with it focusing, depth of field is so limited that it takes some trickery to get a good portrait. (As shown in the photo below.)

When we first got this lens for our Canon T3i, we thought the sharpness of the images was great (just as some of the other reviewers have stated). Unfortunately, after having it less than a month, the lens stopped focusing. This is an issue that Canon knows about and has a firmware upgrade for it. Unfortunately, I don't have the necessary camera (EOS 1D X, 5D III - ver 1.1.3 or higher, or Rebel T4i) to upgrade the firmware. Plus I read a forum where several users had tried to upgrade the firmware (following the directions) and the upgrade didn't work or the lens stopped working completely! So instead of the hassle, I just returned it to the store. I'll wait till I can afford a better lens.
