This lens is very impressive for the price. Takes excellent full to partial lighting photos. Low light is just ok.

It's a great lens for a crop sensor. I have a t5i and after using the "nifty-fifty" I find that this lens still gets you the bokeh you're looking for when shooting portraits and is wide enough to keep you from stepping into traffic when street shooting. It's slim enough to maneuver in crowded areas and fast enough to use in low light situations. In short, it's a great lens.

I'm a photography novice who purchased a DSLR for the greater image quality it provides in comparison to point and shoot cameras. I purchased this lens to improve the image quality of my pictures and reduce the amount of camera I carry around. I consider goals both achieved. I notice sharper images and less noise. I've had a few moments where I was unable to back up far enough frame a picture the way I wanted to, but that just forces me to be more creative or assess whether or not the moment was worth capturing to begin with. I've red that the 50mm 1.8 isn't as sharp as the 40mm until lower (higher?) apertures and I rarely take pictures in low light situations that would be ruined by a flash, so I've never even bothered to compare this lens to the 50.
