Was so excited to get this lens. Perfect for sports. So awesome. Amazing quality. Stability control is a must, despite the extra cost. I have zero regrets buying this!! Still learning but that’s the fun part.

The Albany NY Canon camera support person (Ben) is the best! He has made a real connection with my 14 year old son and provides great advise and input.

I kept hearing great things about the 70x200 L lens. I bought this one for around $1100. What I learned later is I bought the 4.0 version, not the 2.8 version that goes for about $2300. The later one is the one with excellent the raving reviews. I have two Canon L lens that give me good image quality when used correctly. I got this new third lens and used it for over two weeks in all kinds of conditions and settings. The image quality was terrible, worse than my inexpensive 18x135 kit lens, which I refuse to use due to image quality. Apparently I got a poor copy with focusing issues. This happens with lenses, even L lenses, from time to time. Best Buy was gracious about refunding my money and I will buy a different L lens.

    Incredibly versatile & sharp lens

I adore this lens. I use it all the time and find it to be one of my most sharp and versatile lenses. I looked at both the f4 and f2.8 IS variants of this L lens and decided on the f4 because of weight and cost. With today's quality DSLRs, I found pushing the ISO a bit more than covered me for my needs, and the reduced weight made me very happy. The build quality is excellent and I expect to own this lens fora very long time. The shots are sharp, exhibit excellent color and contrast, and autofocus is fast and precise. The only knock I had, and can't really call it a knock, is that the IS is audible. More so than my other Canon Ls anyway, but not enough for me to not recommend this lens to anyone looking for a fantastic lens that will make them happy with every shot.

    Excellent Lens

The canon 70-200F4L IS lens is one of the best lenses canon makes. It is very sharp-from corner to corner, it is very fast and quiet focusing, the focusing is internal so the barrel does not extend out OR rotate when zooming, which makes life easier when using filters. It is weather sealed (non-IS versions are not) so if you are shooting lightning, or storm chasing tornados, you don't have to worry about it getting wet. The image stabilization is fantastic, I previously owned the non-IS version and upgraded to this one and I could not be happier. You get 3-4 f-stops lower than you would otherwise get, which means you can handhold in low light. I hardly use my tripod anymore. This lens is ideal for just about anything, from portraits, to sports, to weddings, to zoo wildlife, to photojournalism. I highly recommend this lens. It is a bit pricey but it is worth it. I have cheap lenses too and you do get what you pay for.

My first L lens. It is an Indulgence. Thank you wife. It is so good, one can get spoiled. One can see why a pro would need tools like this. They need fast, sharp and dependable equipment - that's what this offers. Does an amateur need this - I'll let you decide. I am not a pro and have no intention of becoming one. This is an indulgence but it makes taking pictures even more of a pleasure. Three letters can be used to describe this lens -- W.O.W. !!!! hope this is helpful

I've owned the Canon 70-200 4.0 IS since Christmas 2019. The lens is really super sharp at all focal lengths and not really heavy. The 2.8 version is 1 f stop faster but it is heavy to me and in my view, a 1 f stop advantage is not worth doubling the weight of a vacation lens. It likely is for a wedding/pro photographer but with modern full frame cameras with fast sensors I believe a one f stop advantage, while valuable, is less critical to many hobbyists. This is a superb lens with superb sharpness to the edge and excellent contrast. As other reviewers have noted the lens stabilization does generate noise which can be picked up with in camera mics during video. If you buy a small stereo clip mic and attach to your shirt, you will eliminate the problem. Another alternative is to buy the new version of this lens, V2, which costs about $200 more. I understand that the material difference of the new model is the quieter IS.

The Canon EF70-200mm f4L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens is a great and versatile lens for landscape and wildlife photography. It is very very sharp with dynamic color. It is not too heavy and is very portable. The focus is just excellent.
