So this is what a white Canon lens feels like...

"Oh wow, that IS heavy!" I think those were my first words when I held this hunk of metal at my Best Buy. Seems like nowadays everything is made out of plastic, even things that really would be better off in a metal casing, like cell phones! (hint hint) Feeling good in weight it got me intrigued, I had had the $200~ Canon 75-300mm before and was not too impressed. The pictures that lens produced were good enough for someone who had had a Rebel T3 but at this point I'm looking more towards the future and I had my chance to give this thing a chance, and if I were being rational, I'd say no, I don't need this, but what do we need? All philosophy aside, this is obviously an expensive piece of glass, but the pictures it's producing for even myself, a serious, yet amateur photographer, are stunning. I'm amazed at what a little bit of research and tinkering can net me now! I bought this along with the Canon 7D Mark II and I couldn't be happier about that overall purchase. This was a very exciting evening for me, opening up the boxes for these items and this lens has not been put aside much at all! Even though the F stop on this is 4-5.6, it really is more than good enough! It compliments my Sigma 18-35mm F/1.8 very well! While I really wanted the Canon 70-200mm F/2.8 L II IS USM, I simply couldn't afford that nor necessarily justify such an increase in price, especially considering the shorter focal range. While I understand the benefits of the bigger constant F stop, I really want to do more things that I feel will benefit more from the farther reach this lens will provide. Like I said, the pictures this lens produces are great, it feels very well built, and not to mention, it's actually quite SMALL when it is fully retracted! It's less than half an inch longer than my Sigma in this state, which is impressive! Red rings are nice.

I really wanted to keep love this lens, but being a semi-pro going pro it just didn't cut the grade. Right now in my business I just couldn't justify something that was this long and not compatible with at least the Kenko teleconverters. It will work, but not reliably and I missed far too many image captures for this to be a keeper lens. On the plus side as strictly a 70-300 range L lens this is a nice lens and produces very acceptable images. I thought I wouldn't mind the telescoping lens, but it' not for me. AF is fast and IS is superb. I hand held many captures of antelope, buffalo and moose with this lens and later on down the road when I have the extra change I might go for this lens, but to be realistic I can carry my 70-200 f/4 IS with the Kenko Proplus DGX 1.4x converter and get 280mm and identical image quality with a much more versatile package. Kudos to Best Buy for their trial period and the great way they handle returns. I'm opting for a Canon prime L, so that I can use an extender for the reach. GREAT lens for the Enthusiast, but still a bit heavy and not as versatile as the 70-200 f/4 IS with a high quality extender. IF you want to keep it simple and need weather seal and updated IS and AF then this is a go to lens with excellent optics.

After much thought and reading about telephoto zoom lenses, I went with this one. Most of the negatives were the weight and not able to attach to a tripod. It is heavier, but not too heavy. And about the tripod, I just put my camera on my tripod and took pics without a problem! I take a lot of wildlife and landscaping pics and so far I am very pleased with what I’m getting. I am now going to start with sports photography as my girlfriend’s grandsons are both playing sports now! Can’t wait to get some action shots! Qa

I had looked at a lot of reviews before finally deciding to purchase this lens. In general they mostly said the same, that the lens was excellent but heavy. Generally I would agree. Although I have only used the lens a couple of times so far, the results have been impressive, clear sharp pictures. Yes, the lens is relatively heavy, especially when comparing to less expensive lenses but in my opinion the extra weight is worth putting up with for the higher quality of the pictures. I would certainly recommend it, just be prepared to adjust your technique to compensate for the additional weight

My first professional lens, super happy with the purchase. I did a lot of reading of reviews before plopping down $$$$ and it is the image stabilizer, lens size/weight, and metal made, is what pushed to the final decision to purchase. The lens is short and stout so when walking around town or in the woods, it does not get in the way. This lens also delivers sharpness and details on every image taken! A GREAT lens with high quality!

I highly recommend this lens to anybody looking for a "white lens". But do not know which to choose, A.K.A. ME. I love this, it equips my 7DMII very well, and the pictures with this thing are amazing. The only flaw is the F/5.6. Maybe to others, but for me it does not bother me. I love it, and it all matters about what the peers think of the images you are producing, and in my opinion that is only something the photographer notices. This is my second lens, and probably last. I am that satisfied with it, and recommend it to anybody.

The Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 L is a very good lens. The building quality is excellent and the auto focus is silent and fast. The 300 mm range is very useful when taking pictures of wildlife and unsuspecting people in their most candid and natural faces. Its a little heavy but the results worth the extra weight. The lens variable aperture of 4 to 5.6 it is not ideal for low light conditions. Finally, being dust and weather sealed is priceless. I will recomend it to anyone.

It's expensive, heavy and, if you're reading this review, you're probably familiar with all of those adjectives. In the interest of brevity, I've included two images cropped from RAW files and converted to JPEG to fit here; judge for yourself. Shot hand held on a crop body 80D. Camera bodies may come and go but this lens is a keeper. Superlative glass worth every penny.

I initially rented this lens and after just a couple of days decided to purchase it. The quality of the pictures are magazine like. I do not regret buying this lens at all. Great walking around/ wildlife lens. I just wish it was a little cheaper, but I have never gotten a picture with this quality out of my kit lens.

This lens offers additional reach over the Canon 70-200mm family of lenses, with some trade-offs. Overall the image quality is very good to excellent, coming close to but not matching the top end 70-200 lenses. The AF is very fast and accurate, one of the hallmarks of Canon's long lenses, and the IS helps capture sharp pictures handheld at surprisingly low shutter speeds.

This is a great lens but it takes some practice because it's much more capable than the basic version with the same zoom. It's also a bit on the heavy side. I use it primarily for outdoor shooting, including soccer games. Very happy with the results once I got used to it.

This lens is definitely worth the money. We purchased the less expensive Canon 70-300 lens which is $599 to compare. There truly is no comparison. The clarity alone is worth the extra money.

Great lens. I just needed the extra reach, so I returned it and got the 100-400mm lens instead. But this lens was very well built and I'm sure would be a great addition to anyone's collection of lenses.

Excellent image quality in a compact size. Image stabilization works very well. The downside is the F stop of 4-5.6 and the weight if you plan to carry it all day when traveling.
