Customers have good things to say about the image quality, bokeh, and price of the EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Medium Telephoto Lens, frequently praising its sharpness and performance in low light. Positive feedback also highlights its ease of use and the suitability of its focal length for portraits. While some users noted chromatic aberration and occasional focus issues, these concerns were less prevalent than the positive reviews.

I purchased mine brand new in the box specifically for shooting professional portraits with my Canon EF 5D full frame camera.
PROs:
1. Affordable - can't beat the price for what it does.
2. Flexible - great for family photos, portraits, wildlife/nature.
3. Accurate - the focal length, clarity and sharpness makes this lens best for portraits IMHO.
4. Nice, smooth manual focus ring!
5. Quiet auto focus/manual focus motor!
6. Canon quality at its best.
CONs:
None so far!

Great lens, works great under low light, good performance and easy to use. Works well on my two Canon cameras.
Good price and affordable, instead of buying the prime version.

I do quite a bit of work as a photographer & have slowly been expanding my lens collection. Camera gear is obviously quite expensive, so I've been trying to save money by purchasing lenses that are great, but maybe not praised as much as some of the more popular professional ones. The 85mm 1.8F from Canon has been a great lens for the price - perfect for portraits, some work on weddings, low light conditions, and even some live music photography. It's sharp, clean, quiet, & has proved to be quite a wonderful addition to my small, but growing lens collection :) I'd recommend it for anyone who needs an 85mm lens, but doesn't have thousands of dollars to invest in the more expensive ones like the 1.2/1.4.

If you don't have the 85mm f1.8 your kit is lacking a vital lens. Get this lens. It is a very versatile lens. I bought the lens on sale and was so glad when I saw the price because I almost bought a used lens for about the same price. The bokeh is buttery smooth. It's not like the 85mm f1.2L but when you're on a budget this is just as good. Quick to focus unlike the f1.2L. I've used both lenses and as much as I would like to own the 85mm f1.2L I could never justify price, almost 4x's the price of the 1.8!! This lens is a great deal, don't pass up on it while it is on sale.

This lens is well made and it is heavy (heads up!). I used it to take outdoor family portraits and it did amazingly well. I recommend it with its low fstop to get the bokeh you desire. I am glad I didn't go with a more expensive lens as I am relatively new to photography and getting many lenses can be expensive. This was a wonderful price and will get a lot of use.

It's not gonna have weather sealing like an L lens, but it has responsive autofocus. It's over a stop brighter than a 2.8 zoom lens and is quite sharp. I got it to save weight while traveling, since a professional 85mm weighs 3x as much and is only about a half stop brighter. If you don't have a lens in this focal range and can't justify $1200+ dollars on a lens, you'll be happy with this. You'll get professional quality shots. Just don't take it in the rain or dessert.

Great lens for portrait work. My above comments describe my experience perfectly; on a full frame body you won't experience this but on APS-C it has an effective focal length of 85x1.6-- I have to back off my subject quite a bit. Beautiful image background blur, very well made lens for portrait stuff

My go to Portrait Lense

I recently used this lense during a Wedding ceremony and Reception. The pictures came out clear. Because this lense is fast, I could set my shutter speed to 100 to 200 and did not require IS (image stability). The bokeh (out of focus blur) is nice and creamy. I can easily achieve professional quality photos using this lense. It is fun to use. I also have the 35mm Canon lense which is also fun to use.

Great portrait lens for full-frame DSLR shooters. Before getting my 6D, I shot portraits with a Rebel + a 50mm 1.8 so I looked to upgrade my prime lens to match the body upgrade, and this lens fit the bill well. The build quality, as expected, is better than the entry-level 50mm, and its sharpness is even better. For those looking to shoot high quality portraits without spending $1000+ for the L version of a prime portrait lens, give this lens a serious look.

Picked this lens up a month or 2 ago as my second lens in pair with a Sony 28mm f2. Shooting on the a7ii with the MC-11 adapter. Great lens, quality is nice, good bokeh. Focus can be somewhat slow sometimes but that’s from using a canon on a Sony with the adapter. Definitely amazing lense for the price. If you’re looking for a good 85mm with good bokeh, this works great.

This is a wonderful sense. When i got my 5D mark III and i wanted the 28-70mm however the price range was not what i could work with. The assistant recommend the 85mm and its been great. Works well with low light and the pictures are very clear. The auto focus works great and the price is good too.

I bought this lens for portraits of my grand kids and some indoor sports. The lens will be used on my new 6D MII which I just received. The lens over all is well built and should last for many years to come. I did look at Canon's 135mm lens but at this time it's a little over my budget. Price and value make this a great lens on a full frame or crop DSLR.

I consider myself an amateur photo enthusiast and this is the third lens in my collection. Excellent choice I must say. Fast and quiet autofocus. The f/1.8 aperture of this lens creates amazing portrait photos with little effort and it is perfect for low light environments. I would recommend this lens to anyone. You can't go wrong with this one...

I LOVE this lens. It has become my favorite to use. It's my first USM prime and I find myself gravitating towards it over others now. The quality of images it produces over other, less expensive ones, it amazing. Works excellent in low light. Can't wait to purchase others now.

My lens was outdated so we bought this one to so we could take some photos for my daughter's one year birthday.
The photos turned out amazing and the lens was cheaper than hiring a photographer. I highly recommend!

I love a PRIME. I didn't want to spend the amount of money for the 1.2 There is no need. This provides great bokeh and sharpness!
Great for my portrait work and as a result I sold the 50 1.2mm I purchased here also.
