Almost makes the SL1 into a pocket camera

BLUF: Light, compact, well-built and a solid optical performer. The EF-S 24mm is the third STM prime in Canon's lineup (following the EF-M 22mm F2.0 and the EF 40mm F2.8), and shouldn't be the last. The compact pancake design makes for a great experience on smaller Canon bodies like the SL1 (100D). (I'd like to see folding optics like the Nikon D3300's kit lens too!) The barrel is plastic, but it's nicely textured and feels solid. The front optics look lost in a sea of plastic, but this was probably done to get a 52mm filter ring to match the 40mm STM lens, the 50mm F1.8, and other inexpensive Canon lenses. (The size of the EF mount also precludes making a lens with a diameter much smaller than this.) It features solid optical performance, with no obvious flaws in color rendering, distortion sharpness. Autofocus is not as quick as ring USM, but it's about as fast as the micromotor version you'd find on lenses like Canon's 28mm f1.8 USM. Manual focus is...odd - like there's a slight delay - due to the focus-by-wire system (this also plagues most micro 4/3 lenses). Autofocus continues to be accurate in relatively poor light. For the money, this lens is very tough to beat! If you have a Canon crop body, this is a much better buy than the 50mm F1.8 lens for a number of reasons (smaller, better built, faster and more accurate autofocus).

I have a Canon 70D that has the APS-C sensor. I bought a "Nifty Fifty" 50mm 1.8F Canon lens and LOVED it. I shoot pics of my family almost exclusively and with kids its hard to get quick shots let alone crisp focus because they are always moving. I liked the more natural view of the fixed lens but needed a closer focal range than the 50 on an APS-C. Its quick and accurate and switches to Video perfectly because its also an STM. The lens has quality construction. The glass is quite small and gives the impression of cheap but I can't complain about focus, field of view or sharpness. It does what I need without spending $1500 for the L-Series lens.

Great size for travel but lacking contrast

I bought this as a wide angle lens to use for travel... taking mostly landscape photos. While the images are sharp, I find that colors often turn out a bit strange... either too cool or too warm. It also feels like I can't get enough contrast from the lens. My 50mm 1.4 has much better color and contrast, but I guess that's not a surprise. Any issues I've had with color and contrast have been easily remedied in Lightroom. All that said, this is a great lens that is lots of fun. The 24mm is a great focal length on a crop sensor for walking around - super versatile. Wide open, I definitely choose this lens over my Canon 24-70 2.8 L. If I don't need the zoom (which I usually don't), it's just way easier to carry around this tiny thing vs. the monster 24.70 2.8.

I wanted to love this. I bought it because I wanted something not-so-bulky for my camera. While this is not bulky, I find that I don't enjoy using it as much and I actually prefer the bulk of the other lens if I can get better pictures. Obviously, there is no zoom lens and I knew what I was getting ... but I think it is not as practical for me as I thought it could be. It is fine for what it is, I just don't get as much use of it as I thought I would and just end up using my phone when I want to go for something more lightweight.

This is a fantastic lens. I've had it for a couple of months now and I've been thoroughly pleased with it. The build quality is superb and the image quality is quite top notch, nice and sharp. The low-profile makes it great for carrying around and pulling out for fast shots. I've been using this lens primarily for video projects but have been taking loads of pictures as well. My only con is the the manual focusing on it; it's a "focus by wire" which has a light lag to it, I'd prefer a mechanical focus but it's not been a deal-breaker for me. I really love how this lens performs and wholly recommend picking it up.

I was very pleased with my purchase. It works well with my Canon T6i. I have been using it as my every day lens for close ups and even for shooting video when I do interviews. This has become my go to lens. I’m giving it 4/5 stars because although I am pleased with my purchase, and use it as my primary lens, I wouldn’t say that it was life changing, or completely outshines the standard lens that came with my camera, but if you are looking for something nice and affordable for both close ups and landscapes, this lens will do the job.

This is one of my favorite lens compared to the 50. Even tho the it’s a 2.8 it has given me a lot of outstanding pictures. It doesn’t create as much of a loud noise when focusing. This has updated technology in the lens not like the old 50. I have used it for pictures and video Portrait and outdoors. Now I wish the came out with more pan cake lens. Camera 70D

Seems to be a decent lens. I like the build quality with the metal mounting ring. Wanted a wide angle prime that was also decently fast (f2.8). I have used this lens at its extremes, both f2.8 and f22 and have gotten mixed results. Photo clarity seems more consistent in the mid exposures (f8). I believe performance will improve as I get a chance to work with the lens more. NOTE: This is an EF-S lens which is intended for Canon cameras with a APS-C sensor and NOT full size. Is compatible with all Rebels and select other bodies.

This lens opened up the door for my photography/videography! Prior to this purchase, I was using my kit lens only! My pictures are sharper and my is camera lighter and more compact! It has a natural vignette in the right overhead lighting that's pretty cool. It has solved a lot of quality issues compared to the kit lens. Primarily in sharpness and overall lighting control!

I really like the Canon 24 mm STM lens. It's not as wide angle as I would like but I like the small size. I use it on a Canon SL1. I can keep both in a large fanny pack when I am out taking pictures. It's not as bulky as the 18-55 mm that the SL1 comes with. The build quality of the 24mm is good and I tested it at all apertures and I'm happy with the image quality. I haven't really tried it for video only still photography. But, the price, you can't go wrong.

I originally started out with the telephoto lens and I loved that one, but I wanted a small "pancake" lens so I bought this one after having problems with the 40mm lens. I like it, but I dont love it. It gets the job done, and still takes great pictures, but I'd much rather slap on the huge telephoto lens because I feel the pictures come out so much better. Regardless, I do like it for simpler pictures and smaller tasks.

This is an great lens for a beginner photographer that does not want to spend a lot of money for a fast lens. It is great in low light situation and has nice bokeh. Another plus is that it is small and light, making a good lens to shoot close to subjects but not making it uncomfortable for them. Only reason not a 5 star item do to not having image stabilization.

I've been wanting a wide angle lens but couldn't fork over the money for a really nice one so I opted for this one. I took it to Iceland with me to break it in. It works great for close-up shots.

I'm a pro photographer and this is a great lens to slap on for video or when you need a wide angle. I was indoors and was forced to photograph a group on the sofa, in somewhat confined area and this lens worked and sharp edge to edge. Auto-focus seemed okay. Keeping it in my bag always now.

I am using it on my Rebel T4i. 24mm is a great walking around lens that let's you use in any situation, especially indoors. For the price and the versatility at f/2.8, it's a great addition to your camera bag. Only down fall but is expected is that the f/2.8 does not deliver great bokeh or depth of field because of its wide angle.

I was looking for a wide lens that was under $200 and while this wasn't exactly what I was looking for it was great lens to have besides the lens kit that came with my canon rebel t6. I would buy this as another lens option if you have the money for it.

I am really liking the fixed lenses like this one. I have at least 5 fixed and this is one of my favorites. You can capture things and detail you cannot see with your eyes and then blow it up on the screen and it looks amazing. The inner workings of our grandfather clock we could never see so close look amazing.

This is a perfect little lens to have on your camera. It's so small you can just leave it attached to your camera when you go to put it up. If you are new to Photography this is a good starter lens. Very good price!

i honestly was surprised by the amount of usage i got out of this lens. i originally went looking for a 40mm but since best buy was out i decided on the 24mm for something different, i think this was better for what i use for some landscape shots and portraits especially at night.

This lens is simple. It's best use is for travel because it is so lightweight, compared to a zoom lens like the 18-135mm. And you get the lower f stop of a prime lens. I gave it a 4 star because compared to other Canon STM lenses I have, it's a bit noisier when focusing.
