The lens is a little heavy as I have tremors, but the image stabilization really makes a difference and I was able to get great shots of a bald eagle grabbing a fish out of the water and flying away, in focus and free hand. My tripod cant hold it steady due to the front weight, but its a small inconvinience for the benefits of this lens

I am constantly amazed by the quality and sharpness of this lens and it's ability to quickly Autofocus! I use it for shooting sporting events like soccer, baseball, lacrosse, etc, as well as for wildlife. Best investment in my camera bag after the Canon 1Dx a few years ago.

The quality of the lens along with the focus speed make all of my pictures perfect. I've taken it out on some hikes and it performs in close settings along with far shots.

I do a lot of birding photography and decided to finally get this 400mm lens. It is a great lens - awesome focusing - sharp photos. I would recommend this lens to friends. The only problem I am having is the weight of lens but hopefully it will get better over time.

Cannot say enough good things about this lens. Takes awesome pictures. In fact, I have had many comments that my photos look professional. I use it all the time-mostly for landscape and wildlife pictures. It is heavy so a tripod is good to make sure it stays still while taking pictures.

The glass in this lens is really awe inspiring! The image quality throughout the zoom range is excellent on and off axis, flat field and excellent image quality across the full frame of the 5D. I am truly impressed with the image stabilization, I take many shots on a moving / rocking boat with great results, the servo options are also very useful depending on the situation you are in, many rock solid images at relatively slow shutter speeds! Great zoom action and lockable/variable tension, ring zoom control. Only wish that Canon would keep the zoom ring and focus ring in the same location on their zoom lenses. I have two lenses and the zoom is inner on one and outer on the other. I have several hand held shot of the moon at 400mm that are crisp and sharp. Pricey lens but worth every penny!

There is a ton of wildlife around me and my 70-300mm just wasn't cutting it. This lens takes great photos with sharp and fast focus, and I even used it handheld with surprisingly good results. I would love to see how it works with an extender attached.

Recently purchased this Lens for an Alaska trip and I couldn't be happier with the results! One word of caution is the overall weight. This is a monster of a lens and worth looking into a harness if you're going to be hiking/moving around much with it.

Minimum focus range decreased vs previous version

Most importantly for me was the change to minimum focus distance on this newer 100-400mm lens vs the old push pull version. It used to be 6 feet, now only 3 feet. Being able to capture a butterfly or bird that suddenly lands on a branch next to me, then quickly be able to switch to something 50 feet away in the air was worth upgrading. While happy with this lens bokeh and sharpness, I did not feel like it was a major upgrade in either from my older version. I have read they updated the coatings on this, but I must have had a decently sharp one of the older model because I can't see much difference. Because I use this as my every day lens and I do not switch lenses, it was super important to me to be able to focus at 3ft for flowers/insects etc. so it was worth it.

I can't give you accurate numbers on improvements in resolution or focusing speed. What I can tell you is that a source I trust said that this lens focused faster and had better resolution than the previous version of this lens (which I have one I am going to dispose of) and I can tell you after using this to shoot an airshow I absolutely believe this is significantly better than the previous version. One other detail; I used to have a good collection of manual focus cameras and lenses and back then, the 'push-pull' type of zoom was common, mostly because if you have to both manually focus and zoom at the same time, the push-pull type zoom is the only practical type of zoom, in my opinion. Of course, if you are primarily using auto-focus, the dual ring focus and zoom such as on the new 100-400 is just fine. But if you like to manually focus a lot, I would hesitate to recommend the new version of the lens. Otherwise, buy one and I think you will love it.

Canon is famous for it's "L" glass and there is a reason for the fame. This lens is phenomenal! The zoom is smooth and deep. The picture quality is beyond compare. Treat yourself! You will not regret it!

Shoot at an incredible distance!! Great lens!! A little heavy at times if shooting without a mono/tripod, but the images are well worth it. So glad I decided to purchase!!!

The lens is used with a Canon 7D Mark II with a 1.4 extender. Combination works well for outdoor/birding photography. It was an upgrade from my Canon 55-250 lens. The difference in clarity and speed of focus is like night and day. A great lens

Very easy to use, was a little concerned on the weight but it's not to bad. I've used it for wildlife and some high school sports. It seems to do very well in manual mode if you know what you doing. I'm very pleased with the shots I've gotten.

I just purchased this lens after doing much research and the existing reviews convinced me to get it. I have a Rebel T8i and was looking for a long range lens for wildlife photography. I am seriously impressed with the results. At the 400mm max I shot a photo of an Osprey from about 50 yards away. In photoshop the image is 83 x 55 inches at 72 dpi. I can crop into the birds eye without any obvious loss of resolution or pixelation. Truly impressive! I was hesitant to spend $2400 on a lens but I couldn’t be happier with the results. I’d definitely recommend this lens.

Bought this lens for a Maui whale watching trip. Loved the IS, loved the distance. Would not want to carry this lens around all day, but it was fine for a 3hr whale watch.

I purchased this lens after renting it. I love how the lens focuses very rapidly. Has great reach to see items up close. Also has a hood lens and case to help protect the lens from damage when not in use.

No, it's not the top of the line but dang near close. I traded the Tamrom 150 - 600 f5.6 first gen lens in for this. I was getting nothing but soft images with the Tamron and wasn't pleased. Maybe it needed calibrated but I didn't want to waste my time so I traded it in on this awesome lens! Best thing I ever did. I want to excel in wildlife/landscape and I feel this purchase was the best i made. Bought it and went out the same day to grab some awesome shots. Very pleased! I'm currently using a Canon 77D with a teleconverter x1.4 with this lens. Got great shots even with high ISO. Didnt lose detail. Love love love!
