Exciting Product / Not so Great Business Partner?

Took about 2 months to be able to purchse this lens from BestBuyOnline trying to use the Financing plan and waiting for site reps to respond to promises of "we'll get back to you as we fix your tech support issue.... not sure I would try to purchase from bestbuyonline again, but in the end, if you have determination, where there is a will there is a way.
Firstly despite what the bbönline website posts, and what the bestbuyonline phone reps adamantly declared about what comes with the lens, what you ACTUALLY GET IN THE BOX IS:
Front Lens Cap E-67U, Rear Lens Cap E, Lens Case LP-1219, Lens Hood ET-73 + 100MM 2.8L IS USM MACRO LENS.
Be aware as you cannot pick the lens up at the store, you can only have it shipped via FedEX (who delivers only btwn 9-5, and not on Sat/Sun). So be prepared to receive your "we'll try again to deliver receipt". But call right away, and tell them you'll pick it up. My box was crushed when I received it from the FedEX office, I worried about if the lens itself was broken.... it wasn't... Had to be as a result of the Canon Styrofoam and the lens build quality.
The Tripod Mount D is not included with the purchase, but the lens bag DOES fit the lens with the Tripod mount attached !! Though I must say, I would have desired a sturdier case than the one that ships with the lens (direct from Canon in fact).
This lens is incredibly sharp, and the contrast is astounding! It's sharper at 100 2.8 than the new (and old) Canon EF 70-200 2.8L Is II USM!!! I cant put it down (unless i have too :) )
When working at Macro distances, you can still get a pretty clean pic with the IS; but the apeture is actually equivalent to a f 5.6, hence despite the IS, a tripod would be ideal.
The min focus distance is about 11" from focal plan. Yet, (in real useage situations) I am able to use autofocus when the object is about 1 to 1.25" from the front tip of the lens hood (when attached)... 100 ISO!!..handheld. Remarkable !!! (I'm attached to a Rebel T1i). (see sample pic attached - only stove top light was on in room)
Take advantage of BestBuys 18month Financing if you need (or must) to get it from Best Buy Online, but be mindful that BBO is not the only place to get a good (or better) deal... but whatever you do, if you're an insects/ flowers/ product photographer... get this lens. Its the right price for the right use.

A VERY SHARP PRIME, VERY GOOD LENS!

For the price of $799.99 plus tax is not cheap at all. But once I started to put this lens to the test, I can't let go of using it. I use this one mainly for flower photography and it did so well. I can separate my subjects from the background, in other words, it has a very good shallow depth of field although f2.8 is not as good as f1.2. What I'm impressed with is the sharpness of the canon lens most specially when using to a full frame camera. I can't go wrong with it and of course the very near distance of the lens from the subject is totally awesome. I totally agree with a lot of photographers that most prime lenses are sharper tha most zoom lenses. The only burden of owning one is the price. But with this canon 100mm f2.8 IS USM, I can't go wrong with it. I can also use as a portrait lens. But if there is a canon macro lens with a longer focal length and a wider aperture for the future, then it would be one the most beautiful things canon will ever do so.

Not too much to say. If you’re looking at this lens, you probably already know what it’s about but...
It’s super sharp. You can get ridiculously close up to objects (I love a good macro shot and sometimes I was able to get way closer to an object then I’d ever want... which is a good thing!). The image stabilization works really well.
Some things to be aware of...
F/2.8 is great but when you’re at 100mm and less than a foot away from your subject, your focus plane is basically non-existent. Be prepared to most likely need a lot of light and shoot at like f/8
AF doesn’t work when using the Sigma MC-11 on the Sony A6400. Not a fault of the lens but something to keep in mind if you’re planning on using this with a sony body.
Build quality is fantastic but that also means its really heavy. Heavy to the point that I found it necessary to add rails and a lens support to my video rig. If you shoot with one hand on the lens, you should be fine otherwise, I’d be a little nervous the weight might damage the mount over time.
Overall, it’s great! It’s obviously a kinda niche lens but if you’re looking for a macro, this is a really good option.

I'm a wedding photographer and highly prefer to use Canon prime lenses. I had the outstanding Canon 135mm L f/2 as my telephoto prime but I felt that it put me a little too far back, away from the action. After reading about the Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS macro, I figured this might be a solution for several things I need on busy wedding shoots. I was pretty much blown away with this lens right out of the box. For the price, this Canon 100mm is a winner....as one would expect from Canon L lenses. Well built, very sharp, has image stabilization, not too heavy and bulky, and of course, it has wonderful macro capabilities.
I think the AF was a little faster on the 135mm but nonetheless, the 100mm focuses sufficiently fast enough. For macro and portraits during a wedding day, the slightly slower AF doesn't prove to be any hindrance. For lightning fast AF, my 24mm, 50mm and 85mm take care of the action.
I actually ordered it online from Best Buy for pickup at one of their stores near a wedding venue where I had a shoot that evening. As promised, it was ready for pick up when I got there and I checked out in about 5 minutes. I put the lens right to use and haven't looked back.
Very happy with the 100mm macro, it's a keeper!

I ordered this lens online and picked it up in store yesterday. Upon first use, I fell in love with it.
Someone mentioned in a YouTube video that this lens takes a while to find the focus, and I agree with that as I seem to be having the same problem; but once you get it to focus on your subject, this lens creates stunning photos.
It is pretty heavy in my opinion being paired with the 6D Mark II. I think that this lens is good for portraits as well as capturing close-up shots. For portraits, you will have to stand farther to really get someone in the picture.
Kudos to Canon for including the hood and lens case/bag.

Best lens for macro photography!

This is the best lens for what it does which is macro photography. One of the reviewers here, XTremeD, said "Limited in what you can do with it other than closeups". Well, I guess he had no idea what this lens is for before making his purchase. This is a macro lens so of course it is for close up, small objects and extreme close up photos. If you need a one do all lens then get a 24-105mm or something similar.

I practiced with and started learning the lens in the house (flowers, leaves, cat). Then took it on a trip to Bosque del Apache NWR, NM along with landscape and telephoto lenses. There I shot some wildflowers, butterflies, lizards and landscape with the Canon 2.8L 100mm IS Macro.
My initial impression is that it is a super macro and easy to learn. The auto focus works very good and is fairly fast, but you have to have it SET TO THE CORRECT RANGE. Image Stabilazation is a big plus, especially shooting moving targets that don't stay put for more than a few seconds. It takes experimentation with shutter speed, ISO and aperature combinations (still learning) to capture the results you desire. Patience is a virtue.
I was very pleased with the landscape and results of more distant subjects (birds and lizards). Very nice star pattern of the sun through tree leaves.
Bottom line:Based on my intial impression, I highly recommend this lens for macro photography, especially if this will be your only macro lens.

This lens takes great macro shots. It has opened up a whole new world of photography, and I am really enjoying learning a new skill. You can't find a better lens for the money. I can't wait to get my new 5D Mark III and slap that puppy onto the front of it. What a combo!

This is a MUST HAVE lens for any kit. I own a 70-200mm 2.8, but this is so much lighter and can get equally great shots with it. If you want to take super detailed photos/video of a subject, the macro on this will amaze you.
Canon L lenses are expensive/premium - they hold value. (as long as they don't come out with a new version)

I used to have the 100mm Macro Non L lens. THat was my most favorite lens. But got infected with Fungus. So I got rid of that one and bought this one. I already carries great reviews. Using it just confirmed what the world says. The lens is Superb. When IS is on, it creates a humming sound if you move or shake the lens, a little annoying but normal as per a lot of owners. Other than that this is great. IS definitely helps compared to the Non L lens. To me, both were kind of identical with respect to image quality and focusing speed. Bouquet and IS are improvement over the other, build quality is also to notch. It is not a heavy lens however.
I tried a few portraits and macro shots and all came good.
Is it worth the extra $$$? I dont know yet. I am yet to explore it more, I will have to wait for summer to explore the flowers and insects, I am sure will be more impressed then. So far excellent

Stunning Macro lens

Quite stunning. The pictures it can take, handheld with flash are simply amazing. I am quite pleased with it so far.
I have noticed a few times it fails to focus - but that is usually due to my not having set the "range" switch properly - or I am too close to the subject.
The shots attached here were taken in flourescent lighting, flash, with lens hood removed of a vase of flowers I bought for my wife. These are amoung the first macro images that I have taken.
The images were reworked in LR just a bit.

I purchased this lens as my second L-Series lens but as my first macro lens. I have been wanting to do more macro shooting (I love flowers and insects) so I decided to start with a good lens. I have not been disappointed with this lens. I have taken some of the most beautiful up-close pictures of my life with this lens. It is as if you can reach out and touch the items in the pictures. The detail contained in the pictures are spectacular. I am not a pro photographer but feel as though with this lens I can compete with anyone. This is a must have lens if you truly want to get into macro photography. My wife thinks the lens is heavy but I done think it is at all.

I wasn't planning on buying a new macro lens but after buying a new camera I had to since (a) my previous lens was an EF-S, and (b) this lens rocks! I upgraded from a 40D (which I still have), but not all the lenses work (EF vs EF-S), so I "had" to buy some new glass as well. ;) I've shot some pictures and video with this and I'm blown away with the quality. I love macro photography and upgrading to this lens (from the EF-S 28-105mm) was eye-popping. I am getting better at taking pictures, so that helps, but the upgraded lens is paying off big time. I'm having a lot of fun playing around with this lens and discovering life in my yard I didn't see before.

One Of The Sharpest Lens In The Entire Canon Line Up! The Canon 100mm Macro 2.8 Is not only a sharp lens it's one of the most affordable L Series Lens Out There! The focus system works great and the bokeh at 2.8 is buttery soft. The lens has a quality build as is standard with canon L Lens. This lens will open up new worlds to you as a photographer as it will allow you to get closer & therefore see things you've never been able to see before. You should not and will not regret getting this lens. it is a must have for any photographer especially anyone at any level who plans or is shooting Macro!
