    Amazed with this camera.

I am amazed at how easy this camera is to operate. This is my first DSLR and I love everything about it. Some professional reviews claim that the size is too small but I am 6'5" and I coming from a point-and-shoot. The bottom line is that the size is perfect and makes the camera very portable. I bought the 40mm lens and the 55-250mm because both were on sale and really compliment the package. Auto focus during video works great (I did have to buy a faster recording memory card) and auto focus for photos is snappy. This camera is absolutely perfect for families and first time DSLR buyers. The touch screen is VERY intuitive and extremely useful. I cannot say enough good things about this purchase.

    Perfect First DSLR

I bought this camera a few weeks ago right when it came out, and I am already obsessed. This is my first DSLR, and I didn't know much about SLR shooting before I bought it (I owned a Sony CyberShot before). This camera takes great photos, and has all the same settings as other Rebel models that you can customize to get the best shot. So far, I am only using the kit lens and it's working great for me. I will eventually want to invest in a 50mm for portraits and probably a telephoto, but for right now the 18-55 is providing exactly what I need. I am also a film student, and I will be looking to use this camera for video as well. I haven't shot any projects with it yet, but when I tested out the video feature, my test shots came out pretty good. Canon's website also has a great tutorial for shooting video on the SL1. I also love how the camera is smaller and lighter than the T3i, T4i, T5i, etc. models. I'm not sure that the size/weight difference is incredibly significant, but I like the smaller size since I live in a city where I'm walking around a lot, and don't have to lug around a bigger camera. As for other differences between the T5i and the SL1, there really aren't many. Probably the most notable difference other than the size is the fact that the SL1 does not feature a flip-out screen. I really don't mind the fixed screen, and actually prefer it to a flip-out. Also, there is a slight difference in burst shooting capability, and the SL1 has a shorter battery life. Again, none of these differences were significant enough for me to forego the SL1 in favor of the new T5i. If you want more info on those differences, though, I'd recommend going to cnet, as they have a great side-by-side feature comparison. Bottom line: This camera is fantastic, especially for first-time DSLR owners. I've gotten some great personal photos out of it, and look forward to using it for more professional projects. Also, it looks like Best Buy has come out with some new packages for this camera (including a memory card and a bag) that they didn't have when I bought mine, so now appears to be the time to buy. (I've included two photos, both straight out-of-camera, not edited, for reference.)

I am Very Happy with this purchase . I have owned a T3i and a T4i but sold them last year and had been just using my Samsung Note 4 for taking pictures. We go hiking and bike riding in the summer time and enjoy taking pictures of our family. This is a lot smaller then I thought it would be and I love it. It is a lot lighter to carry around. I love the 3 inch Clear View 2 Touch Screen on the back it is perfect. It does not fold out but the size makes up for that all day. I wish I would have bought this Quicker than I did. The Quality of the image is the same as you would see on the T4i and T5i. One last thing my prior cameras did not have the STM lens on them and when I shot video clips and it was on Auto Focus you could hear the lens moving. This SL1 comes with the STM Quiet lens and it has Awesome ::))

I am now wondering why I waited so long and fooled around with these point and shoot cameras. This camera is so easy to set up and use, I did not even have to look in the manual. I took a few pictures indoors and they are so much better than any picture I have ever taken. Pictures are crisp and clear, true to the color of the motive. I am hooked within a few hours of playing around with it. I purchased a telephoto lens, which was on sale if a camera was purchased the same day, so I took advantage of that.

For a modern DSLR, it has reasonable pixel count. The case is somewhat bulky but will keep the camera protected.

Wonderful camera. Incredible image quality..Wife gets a new Rebel DSLR every few years (birthday / holiday gift, etc) as upgrades become available - fortunately in the same price range...have had several - over the past 11 years. We sell the prior one b/c they are well kept and hold their value as a used camera very well. She rec'd this one for mother's Day 2013. Kept all prior Canon DSLR lenses which work great on this model as well and she normally just uses the auto mode for excellent results and now that HD video is available on the SL1...she has the best of both worlds with the fastest model we have had in an even smaller / lighter package than ever before. I know some pros who also use these as backups for their multi thousand dollar rigs and say they do an excellent job as well and are highly recommended for anyone wanting the speed / flexibility and image quality these models provide at a great price for the performance it provides.

I love this camera! I got it with two different lenses, a 18-55mm lens and a 75-300mm lens. I am very pleased with the quality of pictures that I was able to take with this camera. It is lightweight and great for learning how to use a DSLR camera.

I'm impressed. Canon was able to shrink their solid entry level DSLRs into a smaller body without really compromising much besides the articulating LCD screen. Battery life is descent, holding with average sized hands takes a bit to get used to, but feels ok. The photos and features are pretty nice, and I love the smartphone-quality touchscreen. I thought Canon was going to compromise a lot to fit in a smaller body, but apparently not. I like that this camera fits into a lot of smaller camera bags that weren't meant for DSLRs.

Awesome DSLR for first time users...

This is my first DSLR camera...Did lot of research beforehand.....Looked at T5i, 60 D and 7 D......and then looked at SL1....Obviously price factor came into effect and SL1 was much affordable than other options I chose.....BUT MIND IT! It is no way LESS than the other Canon counterparts when it comes to image quality, features and usage of other canon lenses EF and EF-S....Nice 18.0 MP sensor that is old but still feels new...Another great feature is the new STM kit lens 18-55 mm...Much much better than old canon kit lens....Video quality is sharp and auto focusing is quick...Images are really sharp and if you are like me who have used Point and Shoot for this long...you will feel the obvious difference and sharpness of the pictures as well as the focusing marvel...Mirrorless cameras are good but DSLR is a different ballpark and if you are looking for something light on travelling, if you are a parent who wants to take kids pictures almost everyday or every week with them moving around swiftly, if you are into casual camera shooting but still vale the quality, this is the camera worth every bit of its money! Great Camera, great user friendliness and super duper results....Trust me go for it....you wont regret!!!!

    Great Purchase

I purchased this camera after a great deal of research. I was looking for a good camera that would be a step up from a point and shoot/camera phone. I was first impressed by the size of this camera. It is the smallest DSLR camera I have found. It is essentially no larger than many of the popular mirror-less cameras I looked at. This camera has almost all the essential feature of the larger EOS models. I was impressed with the overall build quality and handling of the SL1. The STM lens included is very good for the price point.

Most would say that this camera is too small, but I would disagree. Yes the camera is small but that's how they are able to commit to saying it's Super Lightweight. The photos that come out are amazing! If I would to give any advise to anyone wanting to buy this camera I would say please try learning on how to take photos in the raw. All in all I am happy with this buy. Also follow me at @baena_baena on Instagram.

I bought this product thinking it was the T5i canon that I wanted (I'm a beginner). This one is actually a lot smaller and has less features. I recommend paying extra few hundred for the t5i unless you prefer a smaller camera with less features. It takes great pictures though and I would recommend it!

I upgraded from a previous Canon DSLR camera. This one is so much lighter and smaller. The pictures are very clear and crisp. I love taking pics of my kids. Recently I took it to the Circus and with the additional zoom lens I purchased, I was able to capture some really great photos. Just wish it came with the Mini HDMI cable to hook up to the tv. Went to Best Buy to purchase one and they didn't have any in stock.

Good DSLR camera for point and shoot users

After 10 years of using super zoom compact cameras, I finally decided to make the jump to a DSLR. The main reason I never bought a DSLR before was their size and weight. The SL1 is light and has produces pro DSLR quality images. It does struggle to focus in low light when there is low contrast on the subject or scene and you don't want to use the strobe flash to aid the focusing process but there are situations when you just need to shoot without flash to capture the moment. You just need to find an object with good contrast on the scene and use it to pre-focus or user manual focus. Video recording is surprisingly good. You can make changes to the settings while recording video! Subject tracking in video mode works better than I expected in low light. Overall, the camera does a good job determining the right settings for the shoot, but you sometimes must know what setting to use in certain situations as in the case of someone standing in the shade in a bright day. There is a scene option of Shade that will provide the proper exposure to bring the subject to light. If you don't use this option, your subject will most likely be underexposed (Dark# if the background is bright and the subject is shaded. The best thing about having a camera like this is being able to crop images and still have good detail in the cropped image. Also great, is being able to use high ISO in low light without flash so as to capture the scene as it looks to the naked eye without smearing the details, as is the case with smaller sensor cameras. Size wise, the camera is still bulky and you will need a bag to carry it. I have only used the kit lens #18-55mm). I still have not received the 55-250mm lens. It is expected to add even more bulk and weight to the camera bringing the weight to just over 1.5 pounds but the added zoom is a must for us. Battery life is good if you use the optical view finder. Not so good if you use the live view. If you shoot a lot of video, you will need an extra battery because live view used when shooting video. Turning off of image preview also helps extend the battery life.

Works great, I could go into all the details and specs, but I won't. I got this as a second camera, I have a Canon 7d. This is a lightweight small very effective camera that I can use the same lenses on on as my 7d. Traveling is a breeze with it and the touch screen is pretty cool.

In every regard, it's a Canon 100D. This is a perfect unit for every photographer. Professional to starter. To get the MOST of this camera, learn to use the manual settings. If you shoot video professionally, get this before you purchase a $5,000 unit. Our Media company has converted to this camera for VIDEO - TV Production quality, and the 24p is amazing. When you add a few Canon lenses, the results will blow you away. Caution: I have tried other brand batteries, but they swell up and don't perform as well as the Canon battery. Advise to stick to Canon batteries on this one, and get a spare because it will drain fast. Especially video.

I have owned several DSLRs over the years, both Nikon and Canon, and this is, by far, my absolute favorite camera to date. I have owned this Canon Rebel SL1 for approximately 6 months now and it was worth every single penny that I spent on it. The images are crisp and of professional quality. I also love, love, love how lightweight it is, which makes it perfect to take along on trips and overall is much more comfortable to hold and operate compared to larger and bulkier DSLRs that I've used. Whether you are an amateur photographer or even a professional, you will not be disappointed by this camera. I can't recommend it enough!
