Great printer, cheap ink tons of it! Some tips.

Great printer. It takes away the expensive out of printer ink. Instead of replacing cartridges all the time (which are more expensive) you just buy ink bottles and fill up the tanks in the printer, and the prices of the ink bottles are way cheaper!
The print quality and speed is great. I printed around 50 pages last night and I thought it may have gone down, but after looking at the tanks (are see through) it barely used any ink! I'm loving it!
Now some pros and cons:
Pros:
+ Tons of ink! It even comes with 3 huge black ink bottles, these may last me a year or more! Also one for each of the 3 colors needed for color printing.
+ Fast and great quality. A little noisy, but that can be attenuated, I'll explain later.
+ You can print, copy, scan (and has an auto feeder on the top, so no manually placing page by page, which you could do, but no reason to!), and Fax! Had no problems using my Voip line.
+ Setup to my PC was easy, just followed the instructions, then typed the given url for setup on my broswer and I was printing in a jiffy.
Cons:
- Doesn't have full duplex printing! I think this is a must nowadays, helps save paper, and trees! My older HP printer would do this, print both sides of a page automatically, this one can't.
- It comes with an installation CD?? Who uses optical media anymore? Come on, include an USB drive in the future, like many PC motherboards manufacturers do nowadays.
- No USB cable included for people that want a physical connection.
- Tiny screen and not back-lit!
- Paper feeder ins on the back and open (not a closed casset), so you will get dust in your paper...
Now, onto some issues some people have that can be solved easily with something that Canon haven't put in their manual, shame on them:
*** Noisy printer? Turns off automatically? Doesn't turn back on?***
Well, you can solve that easily. Either download (or check, your programs it may have been installed already) "Canon inkjet print utility" from the Windows app store and check the "printer settings". You can also access them via a web browser. Like entering the setup of a router, you can enter the printer's ip address in the url bar and it will pull the printer's web gui. There you can login (default login is admin and the password would be your printers serial number, you can find it in the back of the printer, and can be changed in here). From this web menu there are many settings, including the power saving ones. You can set the printer to QUIET MODE, will be slower, but quitter. Also, you can set it to AUTO SHUT OFF, AND AUTO TURN ON when a print job is sent. I hope this helps some people. Shame on canon for not providing instructions to this great web gui.

A Cure for Ink Replacement Anxiety Syndrome

Canon - PIXMA G4210 Wireless MegaTank inkjet printer. Pulling this printer out of its box illustrates what folks mean by those important “first impressions.” If you hadn’t noticed that this is one of the heavier inkjet printers you’ve handled in many years, you will certainly notice the array of large ink bottles in the box. The 3 color bottles Canon provides plus the 3 even larger black ink bottles are what this printer is all about. The Canon is an invitation to print, print and print some more. Worrying about ink usage and costs is a distant memory. Make sure you purchase a large box of printer paper, because you’re now in the color print processing business. And, the results you get from your efforts are that much more encouraging.
SETUP: I’m jumping right to the conclusion here: I’ve now connected both of our iPhone XRs, an iPad and my MacBook Pro successfully to the printer, and we’re spitting out colorful prints from all four devices. It didn’t take more that hour to get here, but I’d be dishonest if I said I could summarize how I got here. This was one of those rare situations when I adhered closely to the instructions and got lost. I took my more traditional path, intuition, got my laptop connected, and now the phones were easily connected.
Controlling the printer and modifying the settings is done using the LCD screen, which is among the smallest I’ve seen. C’mon Canon. With the largest ink tanks, very large windows to view the ink levels, and a heavy duty, reliable mechanism, it seems like a silly place to get stingy.
The Canon G4210 can print out to the edge of 8.5x11’ paper and will easily handle print paper down to anything you might want. Quality of printouts is very good and I didn’t have a single paper feed error since I started printing days ago. You will want to use the LCD screen to change print sizes or it will refuse to print.
I’m most comfortable printing from various Photo software Apps I own, and there is no reason to use the Canon software. But, it’s there, and it may offer some features or control over the printer that I’ve missed.
There is a power save mode, but it appears to be OFF, only, and requires a manual restart.
PERFORMANCE: The output of the G4210 easily matched the local print processor quality. With these high volume ink tanks, the costs now favor home printing. I printed a stack of pictures from recent visits with family, My own experience suggests that a budding photographer will be more encouraged to experiment, modify and immerse themselves in this photo hobby if the resulting images are immediate. This brings us to printing speed. It’s leisurely. Perhaps the competition isn’t much faster, and the quality of output with the Canon rewards your patience, but this printer isn’t a speed demon. I do enjoy having pretty, colorful prints like these popping out in the next room. And, the Canon isn’t so slow that you can’t get all those pictures printed out in less time than a ride to the retail print location.
SUMMARY: The CANON G4210 printer is a solution to those of us with ink replacement anxiety syndrome. I hate having the high cost of ink replacement hanging over my photo printing projects. I don’t really want to get into a subscription program. This Canon is the answer. These large ink reservoirs are great for both small office, high output printing projects, and photo artists who will be encouraged to experiment. My wife is feeling encouraged to shower the family with pictures of the grandkids. The prints are very attractive, with nice contrast and color. Black&White letters are sharp, approaching laser print quality. Easy to recommend.

PROs:
- Actually pretty good picture quality--not superb, but starts to approach an "you ALMOST can't tell it's an inkjet" quality in super fine picture quality mode (just ever-so-slightly softer fine details and ever-so-slightly less saturated colors) with the right photo paper on board
- You're probably here for the MEGATANK ink wells--I haven't owned it long enough to run through even a sliver of the see-through inkwell liquids; but yeah, the ink bottles are enormous and you get a TON of them in the box so you can probably forget those frequent trips to Cartridge Land or searching for "compatible" tank replacements after a year or two
- Once you load up the Canon printer utilities, you can actually do quite a bit of technical configuration on your printer--tweak power settings, noise levels (I truthfully didn't think it was EVER as loud as some of the other reviews would have you believe), run through the EIGHT different cleanings and maintenance procedures, change drying time settings between subsequent pages, adjust print-head gaps for high density printing, manage paper mismatch notifications...there's a lot here and that's just for the operation of the printer itself--long before we start diving into the included software
- Relatively quick print speed (about 15 seconds for a page of text) and better than average text quality for everyday use
- Some useful features on the mobile app--my favorite is the free-hand selection tool--snap a photo, adjust the corner points at will, and then send the new image straight to the printer from the phone
- Canon's Print Inkjet/SELPHY app further lets you photo print, scan, print documents, edit photos, query printer stats/maintenance needs, and serves as an entry point to the web admin login and online help/documentation--fairly extensive and well-rounded if you don't want to be tethered to your PC to use the printer
- For those not already wedded to a photo editing, scrap-booking, or other image management program, Canon's included My Image Garden software is a light printing template (stickers, cards, photos, calendars, etc.) / image editing hub that also includes interfaces for conducting/configuring scanning and various file organization schemes (by date, event, people, etc.)...not an overwhelming activity hub, but it's a decent foundation for someone not looking to get too terribly complicated with their burgeoning collection of digital bits and bytes
- You're not relegated to using the flatbed only for scanning/copying--the document feeder works well for unattended operation of a stack of images or papers (I had mine run through a stack of 30 images without a single jam)
CONs:
- Seriously, the printer and extensive box contents are a bit intimidating before setup compared to the parade of inkjets we're probably all used to--multiple print heads to be installed/snapped into place, and scary, permanent-looking ink bottles that don't drain smoothly into the inkwells (a bit like giant eye-dropper bottles that require constant squeezing and air equalization as they drain)...if you're getting this unit for a technophobe, or you are one yourself, be prepared to take some time to get this AIO set up properly
- High quality printing was pretty time-consuming--over 4.5 minutes for a single page, photo-quality copy of three 4x6 prints onto a sheet of Canon glossy photo paper
- After the reasonably impressive results I obtained with the fine-quality photo mode, I was admittedly a bit disappointed to see that draft/quick color printing was just that--very draft, even if it was very quick--quality was fine for a color coupon, a picture you want to put up in an office cubicle, something you won't want to hold more than 2 feet from your eyes, etc., but not suitable for something you'd want to save or share with someone actually interested in the subject matter--fine shadow details bled into coarse, black blotches that screamed "I'm an inkjet photo" and color were far darker/more saturated than those in the original image
- As many others have pointed out, there's only a tiny, unlighted 2-line LCD dot-matrix display that serves as your primary interface for configuration/settings/operation when you're not running things from a PC or mobile device--navigation on the screen/via the few hard buttons is challenging and not always intuitive (let's see...do I use the Settings Icon button again, the "Menu" button, or the "back" arrow just to back out of the screen I'm on--hmmm...none of them did what I was expecting...)
- Paper is loaded/stored in the rear-extending slot holder, not a bottom-feeding paper tray, and the paper eject tray also folds out from the front--in storage it's as compact as the unit itself appears to be; but in use, it does need to unfold like a little transformer to both load and collect your printings
- Lots of software looks like it gets installed, but some are just links to download even more software (or worse, tell you to download them, but they aren't actually links to do so)
- Doesn't duplex print (though honestly it never claimed to)--just be aware of this going in as two-sided printing will require manual intervention
Summary review:
Okay, those of you looking for photo studio-quality prints from an all-in-one should probably keep shopping. I mean, it's an all-in-one, not a dedicated photo printer so it shouldn't really be a surprise that photo performance per se isn't a major selling point here. But still--high quality settings on good paper really does get close to the colors and detail of the original image, especially as compared to the faster color settings that are default out of the box (hopefully you can see the difference between the fast/draft settings at the top and the high quality photo settings at the bottom of the image comparison I've attached below). As other reviewers have noted, there are a few usability issues with the included on-board display and controls and some odd choices for swag included in the box (i.e. a fax cable and installation CD, but no USB cable for direct connection). Honestly, it's really just the tiny display that is the most nagging of this unit's usability issues--it's wireless capable and reasonably well-appointed for use from a mobile device which suggests that you could probably get away with not needing to use an attached PC at all if you didn't want to--but the onboard controls make working directly with the unit itself (sans PC) more difficult than it needs to be. But otherwise, there's not much really wrong with this unit. It's not a spectacular performer though its photo output is certainly respectable with the right settings and media; it's not the fastest printer out there but it does the trick unless you're hunkering down for a REALLY dense/huge photo reproduction; and it doesn't come with a particularly compelling bit of software though it was does include is at least of some utility without getting in the way or too intrusive. Unlike some other reviewers, I didn't have any trouble setting up the printer for WiFi and I found the mobile integration with the SELPHY app pretty solid--all in all, a well-rounded offering from Canon.
Unfortunately, it's just a bit too early in the lifespan of this printer to know how well the MEGATANK's longevity is going to hold out against decades of experience with those disposable ink cartridges where the originals always seem to disappear from the shelves about as quickly as Microsoft rolls out a new Windows patch. Still, as a major selling point for this printer, it certainly looks like there's a near-bottomless well of ink to be had in those tanks--I don't expect to be changing them out any time soon. BUT...those ink tanks are also a bit anxiety producing at first go. You fill up the printer like so: pop a rubber stopper off one of the labeled tanks, crack open the cap on a corresponding ink bottle, turn it upside down over the opening of the tank, and give a little squeeze to start filling it (heaven help you if you pour the wrong ink into the wrong tank because there doesn't look to be any way to remove can clean the tank itself--so take your time!). The lip of each tank has a groove that would seem to accommodate a stabilizing tab on the shoulders of the ink bottle--but sadly, there are no such assistive elements on the bottle so you're left to hold it over the breach of the opening yourself. The ink kind of runs out of the bottle on its own...sometimes. Me...I had to squeeze each bottle many times to get the ink really flowing into the tanks (at least you can see the ink levels through the see-through panels on the front of the printer). Of course, if you DO squeeze the ink bottle during a fill to assist with flow, at some point near the end it's possible that the ink level will be high enough in the tank to splatter (ask me how I know). Basically, DO NOT get greedy with the ink! If you try to squeeze every last drop out of the bottle to maximize your investment, you're very likely going to get some splashing out of the top of the ink well before you're done with at least one of them. My advice...put some paper down and take your time. If you don't attack the setup of this printer like you would one of those cartridge-based jobs, you're probably going to be just fine--and hopefully the value proposition of all that ink will ultimately outweigh any of the negatives identified thus far. That said, this is a cautiously recommended all-in-one that does a bit of everything pretty well without knocking any one particular item out of the park.

Lousy printing quality (when it prints), conected via USB to the computer but most of the time didn't print at all, extremelly cumbersome scanning feature, a real disapointment in every capability because there is no point on having a Mega Tank on a printer that doesn't print or having an scanner that is so bad that you end off using your phone for documents scan. Thank God I was able to retun it and buy a real printer scanner (HP)

The Canon PIXMA G4210 Wireless MegaTank All-In-One Printer is a great concept. Refillable large capacity ink tanks, the usual four separate color tanks, including the larger black ink tank. After removing what seemingly are 20 pieces of tape used to secure the various printer trays and doors, you need to fill each of the tanks with the supplied bottled ink. I was a little wary at first about getting the colors correct, as if you make a mistake you are in trouble, so pay attention. You also need to install the two print heads for the unit, I’ve heard about some durability issues regarding them while researching this unit. Givin that for a printer targeted at medium business volume printing you would think some of the parts would be designed for durability. As with other Canon multifunction printers, which I have been using for the last three generations, they are being built increasingly with cheaper, lighter feeling plastic parts. This form factor is also different from previous generation of Canon multifunction printers. In any case, printing seems standard from a rear paper input tray, quality is decent, but not exceptional. The G4210 is fairly loud, and wobbles back and forth when printing on anything but the most secure stand. I did not have many issues setting up the printer as others have described. I simply downloaded the Canon IOS app and connected to the printer’s Wifi access point. Then ran through the iOS app to configure the printer for my network. In addition, with the app I can utilize my other network printer, my Canon MX922. Using the iOS app I can take pics of documents, save in multiple locations, including to the cloud as PDF or JPG files. My Windows 10 and iOS (via AirPrint) devices easily found my new G4210. Scanning of documents was easy either on the platen or through the document feeder, although the latter had a bad habit of feeding in multiple sheets upon scanning. And when lifting the cover to access the platen (scanning glass) the cover it will slam back down if released, these is no resistance when lifting like previous models. Also the top of the scanner when raised sometimes tended to lift up on it hinges unevenly.
In any case I am not sure how often I will have to refill the massive ink reservoirs and the printer came with an additional two black ink bottles. Overall this is decent multifunction printer (MFP) however not sure it will survive more than a few refill cycles. Just can’t see the page count getting too high on these units.
Pros:
- Refillable ink tanks
- Decent iOS app
- Setup was easy for me (others mentioned otherwise)
- Number pad returns
Cons:
- Seems even flimsier and cheaply built compared to previous generations.
- TINY LCD, single line, not backlit display used for some functions.

The Canon Pixma G4210 Wireless MegaTank All-in-One is an interesting printer. It seems it was designed either for a small office environment or a home that has a lot of printing to get done. It weighs about 16 pounds and measures 20.70 x 18.80 x 11.50 Inches. It features Wi-Fi connectivity as well as an ethernet port and a usb connection for connecting to your pc directly along with print, scan, copy, and fax functions.
When it comes to paper input, it has a tray that extents from the rear that was able to take up to 110 standard sheets and around 20 premium photo paper. It also has an automatic document feeder compartment towards the front that can hold around 20 sheets of paper.
When it comes to printing, the actual print speed is very slow. After testing I was only able to get about 8 monochrome pages per minute(ppm) while it was 5 ppm for color printing. This was achieved over ethernet cable and all the other printing options were a tad bit slower. Another thing I encountered was that the printer was very loud, and this may be irritating to some.
Outside of the long printing time and noise, you'll be happy with the outcome. When I adjusted the printer settings and supplied the appropriate paper into the feed, pictures, text and graphics came out pretty well. The text was legible and distinct across various font styles and size while graphics were clean and well represented.
Some things I didn’t like were:
The small non-backlit screen as well as its interface.
The inability to do automatic two-sided printing copying or scanning.
The inability to scan to or print from a storage device i.e. usb, sd cards
If you a primarily interested in low cost bulk printing, frequently using your printer while sacrificing speed and quiet, this is the printer for you.

The Canon MEGA-tank multi-function printer makes high-res borderless photo prints.
Set-up was different than I was accustom to. The print heads come in their separate packages (Black and Color) like a high quality CAD plotter. Each is installed in their respective locations on the print head carriage. I had a bit of trouble installing then until I realized it needed to be located in the open area of the back opening. I suggest placing arrows to show this since its done so seldomly.
The ink bottles are measured perfectly for filling the four (4) ink tanks. I looked up their costs and found them to be amazingly inexpensive, around $12.00 per bottle! This makes the per sheet print cost low too. 6000 color and 7000 black pages.
The paper tray can hold 100 sheets, whether paper or 4x6 photo stock. This makes printing photographs super easy.
You can scan via either flat bed or a 20 sheet document feeder. TWAIN and other drivers are installable via its driver software. Canon included handy software package that will find all photos and documents on your connected drives.
Can be used as a copying machine. Makes up to 99 copies.
The FAX option would be great for the office as my home no longer has a POTS line.
All in all I am very impressed by the high quality , low cost prints. I was able to print directly from my cell phone and android tablet. I easily connected via windows 10 to my networked printer. Well worth the cost when you consider the low ink costs.

Awesome printer for printing high quality photos

I have had this printer for a few weeks, but due to life stuff, I finally got around to printing off a test page, and I am very impressed with how this turned out. I was planning on getting a printer dedicated to printing photos, and printing off picture I use to test color, I would most certainly give it a ten out of ten!
Unpacking the printer was a breeze, it was surprisingly light and not awkward to carry. The printer is wi-fi capable which is nice, because I have it on a bookshelf in my living room, instead of my office area, and has small footprint. So far, I have not experienced any technical difficulties, no jams or anything of the sort.
What is unique about this, is that it has ink tanks instead of replaceable cartridges and this is a first for me. You are given a total of five ink bottles, 3 black, and 1 cyan, magenta, and yellow bottle. Filling the tanks was very easy, if you follow the instructions (tipping the bottle and wait for it to empty, occasionally squeezing, but gently, or the ink bubbles). It was neat to watch the tanks fill up, and I checked the refill prices, and I believe it to be a lot cheaper than buying small cartridges.
My test page turned out beautiful, I used Pixma matte photopaper and the level of detail for an inkjet printer is astounding. (See photo of a photo!) I know canon was good for photo printing, but having now experienced it first hand, I would recommend this to anyone who wants to print out a lot of photos, and compared to my office printer, this thing blows it out of the water! Canon has certainly impressed me with this product.

wanted upgrade from old cannon..didn't get it

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I had an older version of Cannon printer (mx470) that was starting to malfunction often so i looked to this 4210 to upgrade.
I thought the mega tanks were an awesome upgrade from those pesky cartridges that I was constantly changing and they are. During setup I must have printed 30 or more pictures to fine tune the settings and also tried letter paper printing, envelope printing, and much more and the tanks haven't even budged. I can't imaging how much I can print with these huge tanks before having to add more ink. So that is a plus.
The speed , quality of pictures and overall performance are all about the same. For a family that just prints a few pictures a month, prints up homework, addresses envelopes it's just fine. The Wireless Direct is a nice feature also. My kids can do their homework on their laptops and send it wireless to the printer to print up. I can print pictures from my phone also. great feature!
One thing that was actually changed for the worse is the paper feeder tray. It used to be in the front for easy loading of different sizes an types of paper. Now if you have your printer on a shelf or against a wall you have to feel your way around to get the different size paper or photo cards into the slot. there is a sliding paper guide that you must open or close to the size of the paper. So not being able to see the guide you must feel around behind the printer to adjust it. Then you would think that since you adjusted the paper guide the printer would know the paper size, but NOOOO, you then have to go to the menu screen to select your paper type and size. Which leads me to the worst part of this printer.
*THE MENU SCREEN*
The menu screen has also not improved in 5 years since I bought my older Cannon printer. It has actually got worse. It has always been tiny but at least previously you could tilt it up to get a better view of it. But not anymore it lays flat towards the back half on top of the printer. So if you have your printer on a shelf above your computer (see pic) good luck trying to see it. Also it is not back lit so have a flashlight handy to light it up so you can see it.This was my biggest gripe when I reviewed my old one and Cannon has not improved it.
Hopefully the mega ink tanks will make "upgrading" to this printer worth it but unless several improvements are made in future printers I probably wouldn't invest in another Cannon.

Bought this so that my husband and daughter could print 4x6 or 8x10 photos instead of them using my big canon pro printer, and to print colored documents. The picture quality is fine for them. It was very easy to set up, and it connected without problems with our macs. My husband had to do a little more to connect it to his window machine, but it was more time consuming than difficult.

this is a Very good printer with alot savings on ink ... i do recommend it but if u r someone that is use to big screens u gotta get use to the small one this one has since its so advance and easy to use theres no need for a big screen ... it does take a while to set up and ink to flow since it isnt you typical printer but once its set up correctly its set up and the manual cant be more forward on easy ... its pricy but do the math and homework and it will make sense .... plus it comes with all the ink plus 2 extra black ink bottles so thats a 40 dollars extra ... personally for what i use it just in ink the printer paid itself in a month ... if you r a tech or nerdy or geeky guy trust me ... plus goes often on sale for 300 or the 100 gift card due to the bad reviews of ppl use to their old stuff for the past 10 years and not getting the point that technology is advancing and making life easier

I was hesitant because of the price compare to others but having used it for awhile now I am very happy I bought this. It was easy to set up and used very little ink plus two extra bottles were included. I doubt I will need in for a over a year. When I do the ink is MUCH cheaper on a per copy basis. Glad I bought this. Much better than my old Epson. Has an auto shut off is the only thing I don’t like.

I recently purchased this printer after much frustration with my Epson Artisan 837 printer. At my local Best Buy, I spoke to Doug who gave me all the ins and outs to satisfy my needs. I told him I had $200 worth of ink for a printer that won’t print black. My printer also pulled multiple pages when printing. I literally could barely print 2 pages at a time and the machine would pull 5. I was never able to print a picture without the ink smearing everywhere. Worst of all, the color on my computer was never the color that came out of my Epson. Anyways, the install of this Canon printer wasn’t bad at all.... probably because I just added it to my network. Admittedly, I was concerned about the ink bottles but they were pretty safe for pouring too. After all was set-up, I tested my printer and OMG.... what a great choice! I had created a flyer and the color was magnificent and No Smearing! I decided to print a photo and it too was beautiful! I LOVE IT. Yes, the display isn’t lighted and there is no drawer for the paper. I chose the 4210 for the ADF for copying and scanning over the 6000 series. I am excited about the money I will be saving on ink! Thank You Doug for taking the time to address all my needs!!!

After a year of use, I still have over half the ink I started with. No issues with print quality. If love not having to buy cartridges every couple months and figure the printer has paid for its higher purchase price already. The ink refills are also very inexpensive. If you need to replace the print heads, you can. The only problem I've had is connectivity. The printer is difficult to set up on a wireless network. Overall, I'd buy again.
