    Awesome camera, great price!

I spent 3 weeks looking at different camera to replace my Olympus digital SLR that I've had for over 3 years. With my job and now all my volunteer work, I find myself needing something powerful, but compact and easy to run around with. I finally settled on the Canon SD 790 IS. My boyfriend had a similar version that he took to Japan with him and I absolutely loved it, so I knew getting a Canon was the right thing to do. This camera is great right out of the box. I was so excited I put the battery in the charger right away. I couldn't wait to use it. The charger is very easy to use, doesn't take up a lot of space on my power bar, and finished charging the battery fully in about 2 hours. I'd say the best feature of this camera is the back.. all the function keys are beautiful and streamlined for very easy use. I did not once have to go to the manual to find out how to do something. (I did however read it to find some of the "hidden" gems). The 3 inch screen shows your pictures in perfect clarity and when you load them to you computer - it's exactly the same, no real quality difference. All the functions are also great - from indoor, to Kids and Pets (I'll use this a lot!) If you're an on the go person who needs a hardcore camera to take great photos of your memories, this camera would definitely be it. I know I will continue to buy Canon products. :)

    This is the one.

I took a chance on this camera. I have owned several Canon products, and I needed a compact camera that I could take on a long trip. I wanted something small that would allow me to point and shoot without spending much time on the settings. I didn't have time to do a lot of comparison shopping, but I had read a review recently of the SD series and remembered the 790 as a stand-out, so when I saw it in the local Best Buy on sale, I took a chance. It paid off. I knew I wouldn't have time to fiddle with ISO and white balance and everything else, so I needed a camera that could figure that out for itself and get it right. The sd790 got it right 99 out 100 times. I never took blurry pictures, except for the occasional one in low light, but that was only because I couldn't hold the camera steady enough. I like manual controls. Although you won't get the same level of control you get with an SLR, this camera provides more than enough control for the average user. I was concerned about battery life, so I bought an extra battery. This is one of the things that I had trouble finding in a review prior to purchase, so I want to make this one clear: Over the course of 4 days, I took over 1500 pictures on one charge. Over the next 6 days, I took another 1500 pictures on the second battery. This wasn't just one exceptional battery - the 2nd battery had the same life. I'm one who likes to shop around for the best price. In this case, I just went to the Best Buy store. I figured I paid way too much on an "impulse" buy, but checking the web when I got home and again several weeks after the purchase, BB's price was nearly the lowest (the absolute lowest price is always some place you've never heard or a refurb - stay away). While others on this trip experienced malfunctions with their cameras (we took a lot of pictures and moved a lot, so the cameras really got a workout), I had no problems. The camera worked beautifully every time I turned it on. We changed altitude, we changed climates, we changed humidity, and we put our cameras through some bumpy and rough rides, but the 790 never even hinted that it was anything less than perfect. Bottom line - for under $500, there is no better camera. And this one is WAY under $500.

I never write camera reviews- not my thing- but the great results from this camera has made me want to spread the news! I did alot of research on different cameras in this price range before choosing this one. It was a toss up between this one and an Olympus underwater camera but I realized the underwater cameras don't have the same image clarity as this one. Don't get hung up on camera looks and underwater features you will probably never use, this camera has what you really need. After its many good reviews and overall quality it has not failed to suffice my every need without giving me any problem whatsoever. VERY HAPPY. Recommend to casual user and traveller alike. My friend travelled to Mexico with it and it did an exceptional job. Canon cameras get the best reviews for a reason- make the right choice!

    Great Camera

I have only had this camera for about a month, but so far it is great. The picture quality is really good, the start up speed is quick, the functions are plentiful. I did a lot of research and found this camera to be the best for the price point. I finally went to the store, picked up each camera in its class, (and a few that were "better",) turned them on and instantly took a picture, The same object, same setting, etc. This camera performed the best out of about 10+ cameras. I have used the camera for quite a few occasions this last month, I have used the review option countless times, and just today I had to finally charge the battery for the first time. It is a great camera!

    Exceeds all my expectations!!!

    Posted .

I did a lot of research before purchasing this camera. I have been disappointed and frustrated by the last three or four digital cameras I purchased, and got a little wiser this time. I mostly use my cameras for vacations and snapshots, nothing earthshattering, but I have, in the past, had a lot of trouble with blurry, vague, dark pictures, except with my very large digital Kodak, which is too big to take on an upcoming trip. I purchased a 4G highspeed sd card and an extra battery and leather case along with this camera. When I received it, I charged it, actually read the manual, then started taking lots of photos, and I am having a great time with it. Maybe this will turn me into a half way decent photographer. My initial battery charge is lasting a very long time, (two weeks +, and it is still fully charged) and the pictures are the best I have ever taken. I am blown away by all the things this camera will do, and how easy it is to figure out, all in a small but sturdy package. Most of all, I am super happy with the quality of the photos, and cannot recommend this camera highly enough. I was a little concerned initially at the lack of an optical view finder, but the screen is excellent, and its brightness level is adjustable. The camera turns on and is ready to use almost instantly, and focusses quickly. Pictures turn out sharp and clear, even with the flash, the zoom works easily with a very accessible button, and there is absolutely no red eye. I cannot give you a very technical review, I am just a regular casual user. I am very impressed, having fun, and cannot recommend this camera highly enough, it exceeds all my expectations.

Great camera, great photos, great size

    Posted .

I've had several Canon cameras and loved all of them. I bought this one to upgrade to higher megapixels and have a smaller camera that would easily fit in my pocket or purse. This has been a fabulous camera for easily taking vacation photos, hundreds of beautiful family photos and kids pictures, and short videos at kids events. It is extremely sturdy and I have thrown it in my purse, suitcases, various kids' backpacks and it has held up terrifically. I love that many Canon features are the same from camera to camera and easy to use so I don't have to re-figure things out to start using a new camera. The size of this camera is worth every cent to us because I am more likely to want to take the camera with me. I don't have to worry about carrying it along because it fits in a pocket easily. At the same time, it's small size does not make it seem fragile. It's very user friendly so I can take photos and email them simply in minutes when I get home. It's also simple to understand the various features, and there are not too many of them to make it difficult to learn to use them. Since it is so easy to use, I am also more likely to print out my pictures and upload them to photo processing sites. The quality of the pictures I've taken with this camera are great. I have been using it to photograph my children in all their many activities and have always been happy with the result. It's very simple to delete unwanted photos too. I bought a Nikon coolpix point and shoot for my daughter and it cannot compare to this camera in my opinion in the quality of the photos or user friendliness. I also bought two Sony point and shoot cameras for my parents and they are not nearly as easy to use. The video feature is great for taking short videos when you don't want to take a separate video camera with you. The only negative is that it has a small zoom but that is perhaps the tradeoff for the small convenient size. And, although it's quick from taking one picture to the next, sometimes action shots can be blurry. I am looking into buying the Canon Powershot for better zoom features and quicker photos now that my children are into sports, but I will still be glad to have this little wonderful camera to take along for convience sake.

    GREAT CAMERA

    Posted .

i purchased this camera as an upgrade for my fiance who had an 8mp kodak eayshare which was having problems. i knew since december she wanted a camera so i did alot of research trying to find a desent camera without paying the price of a new car or tv on it. after 5 months of research on different cameras on sites like bestbuy, cnet, and a few other sites for reveiws all sites narrowed it down slowy to this camera. after i bought it, i took it home and installed the software which was failry fast, then registered it online expecting firmware updates for the camera, and there were none, the camera actually ships out with the latest firware available which suprised me. i gave it to my fiance as a suprise (no particular reason) and she took a few pictures with it. it was amazing the difference in picture clarity compared to her previous kodak. the camera came with usb cable for syncing with the computer, and an audio visual cable for hooking it up to a tv. both worked relatively nicely. the tv cable "replace" the screen on the camera when you have it pluged up, so whatever action you do on the camera while the screen is off to conserve power, is on your tv, it would be great for showing pictures when you have company over. there are a ton of shooting modes, and software that came with it, some helps you create panoramic photos (its a program called stitching). the software that came with this camera was higher quality, faster, and didnt bog down my pc like kodaks easyshare software. another great thing is when you turn the camera on, it is ready to take a picture within 2 seconds unlike cameras that have to "boot up". the picture quality is high and the features are definatly comparable to more expensive cameras that are more than twice the price. if you check our website, at this time before my review, this camera has over 100 reviews and it is at a 4.7 out of 5 for a rating. this camera is rated high for a reason and other websites agree as well. it took alot of research to find this camera and i am glad that i did. my fiance is extremely happy with the high quality of canon. this camera has shown me what a real digital camera is capable of, and it also has a waterprrof case available (sold seperately) and the camera is capable of taking pictures underwater, with the optional waterproof case of course. dont yell at me if you decide to go swimming with the camera without the case, hahahaha. this camera is great and worth every penny and would be able to justifiably be sold at a higher price like other cameras, but this one is a steal at this price. canon did a perfect job on this camera and i recommend it to EVERYONE looking for a new digital camera that cant afford to pay the price of a car for.

    Great camera for the price!

I upgraded to this model from a Canon A85 and I'm absolutely in love with it! The camera is decently sized so that I can take it with me everywhere - it fits fine in pants pockets (although it is the only thing I carry). It's turn-on time is pretty quick. I did a side-by-side comparison with A85 and by the time the A85 splash screen had cleared, the SD790's lens was ready to go! (I'm talking maybe 1 second and this thing is ready for action) As far as battery life, I take it with me every day and recharge every two or three days. The best part by far are the bells and whistles. It has a lot of different shooting modes and they're all fairly intuitive. It also has a focus-point zoom option that shows exactly what the camera focus is centered on. For the price, this was a no-brainer for me.

Great all around point and shoot

I loved this camera before a family member left it in a museum so that it could become someone else's new digital camera. I replaced it with a Sony camera just for a change and honestly don't know why I would spend more money when I should have just got another Canon. Obviously a personal character flaw (more $ is better???) You can't go wrong with this camera. Easy to use, great pictures, easy to carry around in a pocket, switch between still and movie mode, etc. Uses SD Memory which is very easy to find and price competitive. A feature which I highly recommend is the "sticky pictures". This allows you to choose a picture that does not get deleted from the camera after downloading to a computer. I use this to hold a picture of a 3x5 card that has my name and phone number on it. The hope is that if someone honest finds the camera, they will know who to call to return it. I still hold out that most people who find digital cameras are honest and only need identification to return a found camera.

    Awesome Camera

    Posted .

This camera is awesome. I bought it because I had lost my Nikon Cool Pix S50 that I had had for about 2 years and loved. When I went to go replace it, I was so upset to find that the new Cool Pix did not look like my old one (mine had a huge screen, it was very sleek...i loved it). So based on tons of great reviews, and because it resembled my old Cool Pix more than the new Cool Pix, I bought the Canon Digital Elph and could not be happier! It takes excellent pictures....very clear. It has tons of shooting options...the night shooting feature works great! So much better than the night vision on my old Cool Pix which would always be blurry. This Canon also takes awesome quality video. I took some short videos from a recent vacation and it looks like they were taken with a camcorder. I have also taken video at concerts and the quality and sound are awesome. I've gotten so many compliments from people on the quality of the videos I posted. It also has a huge screen and is so easy to operate. I only had to consult the manual once, the rest I figured out on my own. For a high quality point and shoot digital camera, this is your best bet. I realize now that my old Nikon looked really cool, but the quality was just not as good. And the Canon Digital Elph looks pretty sweet too. The only 2 downsides are: 1) It is slightly heavier than some of the other options out there...but don't let that deter you...you get used to it after the first use. It's not an issue at all for me anymore, and 2) There is no triple flash feature to prevent blinking, which the Nikons all seem to have. I blink a lot in pics, but so far it has not been an issue. So overall, the pros definitely outweigh the cons.

    Beautiful pics

    Posted .

This camera was purchased to replace a casio exilim that has served me admirably. First off, let me say that the pictures this camera pumps out are amazing, for the most part. The colors are rich and the photos are sharp, for the most part. That said, this camera is prone to the occasional dud shot. Occasionally, the color just comes out bland and the picture looks muddled. Then again, all cameras are prone to this. Any casual shutterbug should appreciate the overall dynamite quality. Far better than my previous camera. The lcd screen on the back is great. it's much nicer than some of the other 3" lcds out there. Most of the basic camera functions are there and fairly easy to access. There are a couple of controls that take a bit of effort to execute, but it is still doable. My biggest complaint about this camera is the shutter lag. It is usually minor and generally tolerable. However, there are times where it's just not as response as I expect it to be, especially compared to my older camera in similar situations. Finally, the camera itself is a bit bulky. It is a tad heavy, but I think I'd call that more solid. It fits my pockets fine, just not as smoothly as my previous camera. Overall, this camera is a great camera to have. The price has gone down since I purchased it, making it a great deal now. Definitely a worthy purchase at the current price point. In the end, the quality of the pics should be the #1 selling point of a camera for us casual users, and this one will not disappoint 99% of users out there...for the most part! Enjoy!

I have had a few Canon Elphs over my time and i have had nothing but good luck with them. in fact other than the waterproof olympus i would never buy anything else. however, one thing i liked about my first one that hasn't been a feature since then (until now) is that it has a fully metal body, which makes the camera very durable. (my first Elph took a tumble down a marble staircase and was just fine) i have waited a long time to see a new one with a fully metal body, and they finally did it! the big screen, the new and improved button layout, and the in-camera color tools make this camera a breeze to operate and with the DIGICIII photo processing chip and in-camera stabilization, this camera makes taking GREAT looking photos easy. snapshots look less like a myspace pic, and more like something you'd frame and put on your desk.

    Best ultra-compact digital camera

    Posted .

Like most people, I did lot of research (online and visits to Best Buy) before deciding on the Canon SD770is. If you're considering a quality, compact digital camera, there simply is no better choice than the Canon SD770is. I considered the SD790is with the 3" screen, but it's more bulkier. The 770 is the successor to the 750 (one of Canon's best digital cameras), and adds image stabilization, a better LCD screen, 10 megapixels, and better battery pack. I won't go into all the specs, because you can read that anywhere online, but the diminutive size makes the 770 very convenient to carry everywhere and the pictures are absolutely great. What more could you ask for? I admit I am biased towards Canon as every year or two I upgrade to another Canon, but they simply make the best digital cameras on the market. Save some time, take advantage of my extensive research, and get yourself the Canon SD770is...and click away. If possible, get the black-color version with a black round front trim, darker color body, and black wrist strap (as opposed to silver strap with silver camera).

    A good friend....

I have been an avid canon fan for 22 years and once again find myself with yet another quality product. The camera has a variety of features, a convenient turn wheel for camera options, and is worth the extra price for the Image Stabilizer; because I normally shoot with a SLR (Canon 20D)I was looking for a solid camera that offered these options in a user friendly way. This camera lives up to my expectations. However, the camera is not without its weaknesses: it processes slow after pressing the shutter button(the same frustration with my old Canon Elph S500), it is heavy for its size, only offers 3x optical and 10MP(while others offer 5x and 12MP at comparable rates), and it is very hard to wipe off finger prints on the screen and body--even with a microfiber camera cloth (other bodies are manufactured from scratch resistant material). It's a toss up between this model and the SD950IS, but I like the sleekness of the SD790IS and the turn wheel on the back of the camera. It's a trade off and you'll need to decide what fits your needs.

    Very happy with this camera

I bought a Nikon 220s for $150...YUCK...brought it back to Bestbuy and exchanged for the Canon SD790 IS for $180 (on sale via online). Very happy I bought the Canon! Superior picture quality compared to the Nikon. The features on the two cameras were about the same, but the Canon had a bigger lcd screen, and easier to hold on to compared to the Nikon which I thought I was always going to drop. Other than being heavier than the Nikon (probably a good thing)...the Canon is a superior camera for the money....especially regarding the picture quality..which is really what we buy a camera for...right? I highly recommend the Canon.
