Super Compact Camera with Great Quality Overall !!

    Posted .

I did lot's of research before purchasing and all findings led to this Canon PowerShot SX260 HS model and very happy with the purchase. Replaced an older Sony I had for about 4-5 years. Bought it about 2 weeks before we went on a 15 day Panama Canal cruise with 8 of our friends and I liked it so much I took over 1700 pictures and nearly 100 videos! Really like the quality feel, size and features of this camera. The 20x zoom is outstanding for a compact camera and I got some super shoots of wildlife on the trip - a key in my purchase. The pop up flash is at times annoying and unless I am missing something I can not get it to a "no flash" setting in the Auto mode for back lit/shadow situations. The "Movie Digest" mode is really neat as it captures 4-5 seconds of video for each snapshot and puts them in one movie for each day - just remember to hold the camera still for that time when taking a shot to eliminate videos of your feet at the start!! Even with all the pictures/videos and Movie Digest shots I took each day the battery usually lasted all day on the trip. Got a fair sale price from Best Buy and went I went back the next day to get at better memory card t was even $30 less so I got the price guarantee no hassle whatsoever. fI there is a better camera out there for the same $ ($300) good luck finding it - I am very happy with my Cannon SX260 This review is unsolicited and I am sure I am not using the camera it to its full potential as yet so more good stuff to come.

    Overall a great camera

Excellent camera I carry all the time. I missed a lot of photo opportunities because I didn't want to carry my Canon SLR professional model, and now I always have a camera with me. The zoom is excellent, and the camera has features you don't always get on a small camera. Plus it's very easy for anyone to use.

I walked into BestBuy and told the lady I am not a photographer but I want to take photography worthy pictures. She pointed us to this Canon camera and a few others but we ended up going with this one. It is easy to use without having to know what all the picture modes are and it takes great pics.

A very capable, compact super zoom.

    Posted .

I bought this camera to replace my previous super zoom, a Canon SX100 IS. That camera had 8 MP and 10X optical zoom. It was a great camera. I took it to Africa and used the zoom to the extreme but I wanted more (pixels, zoom, speed). The new 260 is very thin, light and has all the capability of the SX100 and more. I do like it and it takes beautiful snapshots. One special thing I wanted it for was to photograph the transit of Venus across the sun that occurred on June 5. I had constructed a solar filter out of mylar solar film for the SX100 and shot several photos of the sun and sun spots so I knew I could do it. I wanted a longer zoom and more pixels for the actual transit since I would only have one chance. In testing the camera, I discovered that there is color fringing at the edges of bright objects. The SX100 had not a trace of this. This is not a terrible failure of the 260 and only shows up on extremely contrasty shots, but it is a notable imperfection. I am including one of the transit pictures as an example.

    Love the HD video-

    Posted .

I couldn't make up my mind between the Canon Powershot S100 and the SX 260, so I bought both of them from Best Buy to make an intelligent decision. In the end the 20x optical zoom was the deciding factor. I'm using the camera in Hawaii and getting fantastic results. The zoom allows close ups of wild life, tropical veg & etc that are amazing. The small size and easy to use controls let me shoot HD video from a zipline. At night we can watch all the shoots via HDMI connection to the HD TV in the guest house. Manual controls allow shots in difficult light and fill flash for back lit subjects. You will need 2 batteries for this camera, if you are using it continuously throughout the day. I bought an aftermarket 1100 mah for $30 rather than $60 for the Canon brand. I wish the SX260 had the same body as the S100, I really liked it. The S100 also goes down to F2.0 so it is better in low light. Also the colors are more natural than the SX260, but the 20x zoom is a feature that I couldn't live without. After a week of constant use I am VERY pleased with the results.

This camera is just what I have been looking for.

I have had Olympus, and Lumix and a older Canon. I have been searching for the camera that can give me crisp clear pictures when I do closeups of flowers. Also wanted one that can do a decent zoom and you could still tell what the picture was. This is the camera that can do it all. You will not be disappointed. I also have a Pentax DSLR. I mostly use this Canon tho. Small enough to carry in pocket or purse. I take it everywhere with me. I havent done the video so cant comment on that , buit Im sure it is great. I have done panoramic pictures and they are awesome. Very easy to do.

The camera preformed in the Amazon amazingly. I did wish i had a view finder vs the LED screen but i think with practice that will work itself out. picture came out great on my Sony picture frame viewer

    Outstanding in all ways

Other than the slippery-body - I LOVE this camera !! It does everything well - and I'm very happy with it !! I'm planning to take it to "Rocky Mountain National Park" next week (instead of my Canon 35mm digital) - and put it through its paces. I'm sure that it will pass with flying-colors. One more thing - the battery seems to get chewed up fairly quickly - so either buy another battery as a spare - or keep your charger handy !

I previously owned the Cannon powershot sx150. Loved it but I misplaced it. So I decided to purchase an new camera and purchased the sx260. Twice the features and just as easy to use. The sx260 make even the most novice photographer look like a pro. My favorite feature is the hi speed video feature.

Great image quality for small camera

I'm very happy with image quality in most situations. I use zoom nearly every shot, and am very pleased with it most of the time. Full zoom doesn't always know where to focus. Color fidelity is outstanding. I'm very happy with low light shots - and I have flash turned off. It's small enough to fit in my pocket, but large enough to feel good in the hand. Battery life is very good, but then, I've got the flash and the GPS turned off. I haven't spent enough time muddling around the manual to get the most out of it, I'm sure.

Great Camera for beginners as well professionals

    Posted .

Nice camera for beginners and those who think they can take quality pics with point and shoot cameras but aren't professional photographers. It has great zoom with a little blur at full zoom but then best in category. Easy to use and you can take quick photographs. Flash comes out automatically whenever it needs it and it is positioned OK to use. One thing : Just press click for 2 seconds first so that it focuses on object clearly and then go for full click. This is the secret to take great pictures from point and shoot cameras. Overall awesome camera , nice battery life, no need of second battery . It is not very good but decent in low light. Very much ok for normal occasional pictures as it has flash with it. I have had canon camera earlier (AA batteris) and it is much better than that (Internal battery which is much stronger than AA ones). Canon is great

    Great camera for vacation

I was looking for a camera that would give me a powerful zoom without the bulk for my cruise; the plan was to go para-sailing. Well we didn't go para-sailing but I did get awesome pictures of the fish in the water, great video of my son floating in the ocean and even my 3 year old took great pictures. It was really easy to use and the bundle was extremely valuable. I was able to carry my camera and the extra battery around in the pouch on my wrist without having to worry about comfort or it being in the way. Awesome camera for a beginner.

Upgraded from my trusty Canon PowerShot SD 1200 IS

I used my old Canon almost daily to photograph nature. I always loved it but.... I was ready for a longer zoom. The transition from the old trusty to the new with zoom has been relatively easy. New camera is heavier and I am learning how to steady it. It is less forgiving of my shakiness than the older lighter digital. Picture quality can be a lovely surprise as I focus in on subjects that previously I was unable to capture. I took some great bird photos after the snow today and already downloaded them. They looked great!.

Excellent replacement for my older Canon PowerShot

The SX260HS continues to meet my expectations and I enjoy its use. It's quite small but it packs a lot of features that I continue to rely on in many shooting situations. Other than the pop-up flash, that continues to protude under my fingers, I have little negative feed back for the camera. There are other cameras out there with basically equal features but they are bulkier and hard to carry around. This camera is as portable as a compact smart phone. Try one!!!! You too will love it!!!

I have had two other Canon cameras and put them aside because of the low battery life, inability to use rechargeable batteries and the delay once the button is pushed, is intolerable. All of these concerns are fixed in the SX 260.

Replaced the third generation Nikon Cool Pix with this for my point and shoot, and so far so good. We have a couple of Canon DSLRs in the family but the menus are different on this and I'm still forgetting where a few things are. Only a problem when I want to get a good shot quickly. The zoom is awesome, stabilization spot on. One of the two major flaws (as noted by other reviews such as CNET) is the motor noise when using the zoom in record mode. Despite all the technology crammed into this small package they can't figure that one out. The other is a matter of changing habits on how to hold a small camera: the flash pops up where most people would place their left hand. After a few days i got used to it, but as far as basic design what's up with that? Favorite mode thus far is the burst; used it to catch the best shot of a herd of elk along the road south of Crescent City CA. Take a half dozen shots and save the best. Used mostly auto mode and results were good if you're not worried about perfect lighting. Sometimes the lighting and colors came out surprisingly dynamic (i.e. an enhanced sunset that looked even better than the real thing) but shade and light in the same shot will force you to the manual controls. As obvious as that should be, I got away with a lot more of those shots on the old Cool Pix. But got some great shots with the low light setting. Best concert shots ever with a point and shoot. One other issue with the record mode, thankfully only happened one time thus far: first day of use I took this to a concert. On the loudest songs with prominent bass and drum the sound on the recording went spastic. Playback sounded like someone was crumpling wax paper next to the mic throughout the recording. The quiet and mid-level songs were fine. I came home, stood in front of a speaker and blasted a song, and this time the recording was perfect. Called the tech at Canon and he suggested possible causes but had never heard of that problem. Overall this camera is great for the price, and most people who want to grab a quick shot with decent results without lugging a DSLR will be pleased for the most part. And will be thrilled with the zoom.

Great Zoom. Photos are sharp. Beginner to Advanced

I was looking for a camera that would fit in a pocket or purse that would have high quality photos. A short shutter lag was a priority. While I wish there was no lag at all, this camera is pretty fast. I have a Nikon DSLR, but it isn't always practical to take it with me for some occasions. I turn the flash off unless I really want it. The flash pops up on top, right where you hold the camera. When it is set to automatic, I constantly have my index finger in the way. I'm training myself to hold the camera in a different way, so that my finger is not on the top at all. The battery doesn't last very long. I had to change batteries after 111 photos when I had the camera set so it focuses constantly when the shutter is half way down. This setting, though, was perfect for action shots at the Packer Game. Virtually every photo was in focus even though I was sitting about 60 yards away from the action.
