Canon far outdid themselves with this lens. Yes, it may be pricey, but until you've shot with this lens and seen what it can do, you haven't experienced sharpness before. As soon as you take it out of the box, you know you're dealing with a quality product. The weight is perfect to feel like a proper quality lens without being overbearing or difficult to use. I don't know what Canon coated the lens barrel with, but I can't seem to scratch or scuff it at all. Fingernails, rings, cat claws, it doesn't matter. I simply wipe the barrel off with my shirt and its brand new again. Mount it to your camera and the magic begins. Even just messing around with it, the sharpness, colors, and bokeh quality are immediately apparent. But the pièce de résistance is by far the sharpness capability of this masterwork. I thought I was buying an 85mm lens, but I've actually come to find that this is a 85-150mm lens. The extent that I can crop my images and still arrive at a usable photo is astounding. I can crop 3:1 and still get a sharper image from this 85mm than I ever could out of my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM without any cropping. Oh, and chromatic aberration just doesn't exist with this lens. I could talk for days about the sharpness, but I'll leave it with that. In summary, yes, it is expensive, but there is no flaw with this lens in any aspect. And as camera technology continues to advance, this lens will only get better. To any portrait, wedding, studio photographer or anyone simply looking for as sharp a lens as possible, this lens needs to be in your bag. You won't regret it.

This Canon RF 85mm 1.2 lens is seriously a game-changer! It's like the king of portrait lens, capturing insane detail and making every shot look professionally done. The bokeh? First thing first: this lens is not cheap. I’m using an EOS R and this lens is easily more than twice as much as my camera. But this is quality and you get what you pay for. The pictures come out crispy sharp, the backgrounds melt away because of the 1.8 aperture size, and the 85mm focal length creates a style that I’m in love with. It flattens the background, gives subjects a flattering look, and melts away everything not in focus. For picture quality, this is my absolute go to lens for everything. If it wasn’t for the size and the tight focal length, this would be everyday lens (but trust me, despite this I still try and make it my daily lens). Downsides: This is fat. Chunky. Huge. To the point where it makes me question whether it will eventually snap off the camera. Fortunately it hasn’t happened, but it is something that gets a bit heavy to handle. Because of the tight focal length and the fact that it’s a prime lens, you might not have many opportunities to use this.

I've had my eye on this lens since I first got my R5. It is my first RF lens. I'd be using my adapter with my EF lenses no problem. But it was time for an upgrade. After trying to stomach the price tag for 6 months I decided to jump on it. Well, it took me about .2 seconds to realize this is truly an incredible piece of equipment. I could not be happier with my purchase. It is so incredibly sharp on your focal point but also somehow gorgeously creamy. Just do it. Save your pennies. It is 100% worth the price tag.

It's often said that camera lenses are "tack sharp"... This is the first time that signifier actually makes sense. This thing is a beast and the sharpest lens I've ever seen. If you've got the money, do it...

I already own a few lenses but none of them guve me the looks that this one does. Great low light performance and beautiful bokeh

*Owned for just about a month now will update around the 6 month mark to see if it holds up to my first impressions. This lens is absolutely everything you are looking for in a 85mm 1.2. First the speed at which it will focus is a major upgrade from the EF; this focus speed was one of the major drawbacks of the EF. Adding to the speed it is sharp starting at F1.2, I know almost all of Canon's glass has been great starting at wide open for the professional grade RF glass, but this was just a shock to me for a F1.2. You can shoot wide open almost all the time and if you buying this lens odds are that's why you want it. Three things to consider before buying; 1:let's get to the elephant in the room, $2,699.99 for the normal model or $2,999.99 for the DS model, that price is something I would say. You absolutely do not need this if you are not shooting professionally, I want to emphasize this, Canon sells lots of glass I would recommend even enthusiasts or a novice to purchase such as the 24-70 F.2.8. you will get so much use from a lens like that, that the price is worth it. The RF 85mm 1.2 while possibly the best piece of glass ever made at 85mm by any lens producer has a price tag I just cannot recommend unless you are using it for weddings or need a dedicated portrait lens that you make a fair amount of money off of. 2: it is noisy, the motors inside do make sound that can be heard, I have used this lens in a church a couple of times now, and I have to admit the focus motors make me feel uncomfortable at times. 3: this is not an issue for me because size does not matter so long as you can handle it and typically you won't be shooting for long periods of time with a lens like this, or at least I don't. I generally take the shots that I planned with this one and it goes back in the bag for the remainder of time. But I have loaned it out twice now, and one of the photographers complained about it's size and weight. It was a woman who was on the smaller size, she said after shooting about an hour it was getting a bit cumbersome. She did note it was about the same as shooting with the EF version that she owns and uses more regularly. So while I can't imagine this being the deciding factor between an EF or RF purchase its something to consider nevertheless.

I read positive reviews, watched a ton of videos, read blogs etc. before I purchased this lens. I wasn't sure if it would be worth the price simply because I got great images from my EF 1.8 version and used the adapter on my R6 and was content. I had a wedding coming up and decided to take the plunge and get this as I wanted an RF lens to go with my R6 and this is my favorite focal length. It locked on my subject like a magnet! I was not prepared for how sharp, how accurate, how clean, how perfectly "bokehed' the background would be in my images. I was completely blown away! The weight might be a factor for some as it is a barrel of a lens, but I was perfectly fine and happily shot with it all day at a 8+hr wedding handheld the entire time. If you can afford to, grab this bad boy especially if you shoot weddings and all types of portraits, you will be very happy!

This is an excellent niche lens for portrait photography. I cannot see much of a use for it beyond that. The image is sharp throughout the entire frame. My only complaint is the cost, this lens would be a better value if it were about $1000 less.

I absolutely love this lens! 85mm has been my go to focal length for several years however my other 85mm lenses I have owned just never quite lived up to my expectations. The chromatic aberrations on those lenses along with other image quality issues that are common with cheap glass made it difficult to use in certain lighting situations. This lens solved all those issues and renewed my love for this focal length. The images it produces are razor sharp and free of all those other issues. The focus is extremely fast and accurate and works extremely well in all light. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who needs to overcome these types of issues. It was definitely worth the higher price.

Super happy with the sharpness and image quality it provides even at f1.2, and solid build quality. Little heavy and bulkier. But still love this lens didn't regret the money i spent on it.

Completely blown away with how crisp and clear images of people are with this lens. I knew it would be good - but not THIS good. For obvious reasons, don't use f1.2 if shooting more than one person. The depth of field is too great. but one subject? Phenomenal.

A must have for photographers shooting in low light! This is my first lens with an f-stop of 1.2, amazing!!! I kept reading in my Canon R5 Mark II group raves about this lens. It did not disappoint. My go-to 70-200mm 2.8 lens is now my number 2 go-to lens for indoor sports. I don’t need to de-noise my basketball games. Low-light wrestling photos came out with rave reviews.

This lens is amazing. The Bokeh, the sharpness and the speed is insane. I will note that this guy is heavy.

There is nothing I can say to make you spend this much on a lens. You know if you are a candidate for this. If you ARE, it is worth every penny. If not, it will never make sense to you. It IS everything you'd ever expect from a halo lens from Canon.
