Photo Printer on the Go

Canon Selphy QX-10 is a compact portable printer that I use to print photos on the go. The photos are smaller 2.7 inch square photos but the printer can reproduce up to 256 shades per color at a 287x287 dpi resolution. For the physical size of the photo the 287 dpi provides good resolution and the 256 shades provide vibrant colors with good depth and range. Overall I think the print quality is quite good and because it uses a dry imaging process the photos are ready to go as soon as they exit the printer. The printer only comes with 4 sheets of paper and a color cassette that will only print 4 photos so be sure to pick up a couple of boxes of Canon XS-20L with the printer, each one contains 20 sheets and a color cassette that will print 20 photos. One important feature of the photo paper is that you can peel off a back layer to expose a sticky back that allows you to stick your photos to things like an album or document. The sticky back is like the glue on blue painter’s tape so you can re-stick it a couple of times without having to worry about destroying the photo. Removing the back paper from the photo does take some time and good finger nails. The only negative as with most printers is the cost of supplies, if you aren’t careful you can go through a box of 20 very quickly especially if you like passing out photos.
Setup: The printer comes with a paper manual but I found that loading the Selphy Photo Layout app on my phone and following the directions in the app was better. The app walks you through all the steps from loading the paper and the color cassette to registering the printer using the QR code on the printer. I had the printer up and printing in very little time. The printer runs on an internal battery that uses a micro USB cable to charge. Canon provides the cable with the printer but does not supply a power adaptor so you will need to use either a spare adaptor or PC USB port to charge the printer. It takes about 2 hours to fully charge the printer and there is an LED indicator that gives battery status on the printer. You can also get the battery status by using the Selphy Photo Layout App.
App and Operation: The Selphy Photo Layout app has some basic features that allow you to do some enhancements and editing to your photos. Once you select the photo you need to click on the image to align it and then you use the items in the ribbon menu to enhance it. I personally found it easier to use the photo editor on my phone to make any enhancements to the photo prior to using the Selphy app. Basically the Selphy Photo Layout app converts the photo to the size and resolution that the printer can print, it does not have to be the primary photo editing software unless you prefer to use it that way. Because the printer is totally wireless and does not have a memory card slot it makes printing photos from my Canon Powershot ELPH camera a little more difficult. To print those photos I download the images from the camera to my pc and then email them to myself. I then open the email on my phone and save the images to my phone’s photo Gallery. If you do this you have to make sure your photos don’t exceed your email’s limit on file size. The printer can have multiple devices registered, we have an Android phone, an Iphone and an IPAD all configured with the Selphy Photo Layout app and all can print. It takes slightly less than a minute to print the photo and you have to make sure the photo slot is not blocked because the printer feeds the photo paper out of and back into the printer several times during the printing process.

The Canon QX10 is controlled by a mediocre app, that uses limited WiFi - yet it prints some of the best photos that I have ever seen.
When I first opened the box to the Canon QX10, I saw that they included a sample ink cartridge and only 3 photo sheets, I was hoping more would’ve been included. There is also a charging cable and instructions to download the app. The printer has WiFi, but the only way to print is through the app, and it only connects directly to your phone by scanning the QR code on the printer itself. Therefor, you can’t connect the printer to your local WiFi network.
Loading the ink cartridge and paper is very simple, there’s also visual instructions in the app if you need further help. The Canon Selphy app is the brains of the printer, this is the only way you’re able to print anything. The Selphy app isn’t the most advanced app out there, but it does offer a few features. For instance, you can add borders to your photos, resize it, add digital stamps, and frames. Once you have your photo selected and you’re ready to print it, this is when you connect it to your phone. This is the most bothersome thing about the whole process, sometimes it connects, sometimes it takes a few tries, either way its pretty slow.
After you have your printer connected, you can begin to print. Once it prints, the photo will slide in and out of the printer about 3 times before it completes. I wish the instructions would have made a note, not to try and take the photo until its finished (I almost wasted one of my free prints). After I saw the final results of my photo, my jaw dropped...I couldn’t believe how clear and detailed the photo looked. Suddenly all of the issues I encountered didn’t matter anymore, this was the best looking photo I’ve ever seen. Not to mention, there is a clear film over the photo which makes it smudge and water droplet proof. A nice little feature about the photos are, you can peal the back off and it becomes a sticker. This is a great feature if you want to do a monthly baby-banner, for your baby’s first birthday. The photos are also the perfect size if you want to attach them to your fridge, either by magnets or sticking them directly to it.
Overall, I did have some drawbacks at the beginning. Like the lack of full WiFi support, the mediocre app, and connecting the printer to my phone. Despite all the concerns I had, after seeing the final results of the pictures, I can definitely say this is one amazing printer. The photo quality is just spectacular, plus the smudge/teardrop proof film coating really makes these little square treasures priceless. I would definitely recommend this printer to anyone looking to capture precious moments.

This is a nice compact photo printer. Easy set up. Photo prints in seconds. This is great for crafting. Print your favorite photos and add to a scrapbook. Printed pics of my favorite pics of my kids an placed them all over the fridge. I can’t wait till the holidays, I will use it to send pics of my family to our relatives as a bonus to their gifts. It’s compact so you can take it with you to an event or a friends house and print the pic at the moment. I have another photo printer and I am very happy with the quality of the pics of this one. This is great for any age.

Took it to a wedding reception and people loved it

The Canon Selphy printer is one amazing little photo printer for your phone. First off I like to say I took this to a wedding just to test it out and people loved it. They even asked me where did I get this thing. I let family and friends print out photos and they enjoyed it. It’s also easy to use, easy to print, and the app is customer focused with fun filters. More so it brings a slight nostalgia when looking at the photo paper.
This little object is amazing when it comes to portability and that surely what it’s designed for. It’s not as bulky as some of the other photo printers out there on the market. The design seems to be a very modern and sleek with a touch of “home lifestyle” as its theme.
It connected to iOS with no problems with No problems for the basic phone camera prints. It took me about 20 prints before the thing died but I charged it up again to reuse. (Also I will say make sure you buy some extra prints as they don’t give you many in the box. I did use an Canon Powershot G7X to also print out photos as well which gave more definition to my photos. Printer can’t print unless you lay it down flat so you just can’t print on a whim.
Canon's SELPHY Photo Layout allowed me to add filters and give your phot that “Fun” pop that you and your friends would love. But everything is though the app so you have to keep that in mind. So they also have to download the app to print out photos but to most it was no big deal.
I personally never seen many people interested in a product like this before but family did enjoy using them as stickers as well afterwards. Canon's SELPHY allowed me to give my family a gift of memories with the wedding reception. That’s pretty great to me and worked just fine with no flaws either. While I do feel the app is a little lacking with content I’m sure that will be updated over time. Overall I enjoy it.

Fun Printer!

The Canon SELPHY Square is my favorite gadget right now. It’s so fun and I can definitely see this as a great gift for anyone who even so much as likes phone photography. I transferred pictures I took from my mirrorless camera to my phone so I could access the app for printing my high quality photos.
To view the printing process in real time, check out this video. A print took me about 42 seconds: https://youtu.be/ze5EIqNUXPk
The printing quality is good but not stellar. When taking a close look, there’s light banding on the prints, but it’s so thin that it’s acceptable, in my opinion. The images have a slightly less than sharp quality to them, some aliasing at times but overall good color rendition. At a distance, some of these issues aren’t very apparent. As for the printing process, you can see it print each color (CMYK) at a time, the paper runs in and out of the printer multiple times, so don’t pull the photo out of the printer until it’s completely visibly finished. The app will also notify you when it’s done.
The SELPHY app is mostly easy to navigate. It has plenty of templates to choose from in order to print 1 to 4 images on one sheet. I like the border size choices - out of narrow, normal, and wide, I am partial to narrow borders given that the printing area is small. The app has proprietary stickers, borders, a drawing tool, and other filter effects that you can use to customize each print.
The SELPHY QX10 printer is very portable and overall easy to use. The package includes a Micro-USB to USB-A charging cable as well as 3 photo papers and an ink cartridge. Honestly this is a really fun, good quality printer! If you’re considering this as a gift, I suggest getting an extra set of compatible photo paper.

What a fun little device! Canon's Selphy Square printer makes beautiful, stickable photos in seconds. This little guy makes sharing photos a fun, in-person experience.
Right out of the box, the Selphy Square is very compact with a minimalist build. Besides the device, you get a micro-USB cable (no charging block), instructions, 3 sample films and the ink cartridge supply for only those samples. That's it. I was hoping for a few more pictures out of the box, however the pictures I was able to print came out beautifully.
Operating the printer is very easy through the free Canon Selphy Photo Layout app, though it could probably use an update or two on the software side of things. There are basically three steps to device setup: make sure you're charged up; insert photo paper, logo side up; and insert the ink cartridge. That whole process should only take a minute. Once a picture is selected on your mobile device, hit print and the picture comes out in seconds. You have the option to customize your photo in lots of ways through the app, so that was fun to play around with before printing.
The Selphy Square is small enough to take it with you on the go. The device offers you the chance to not only capture moments as they happen in photos, but to share them with your loved ones instantly. Canon's device is a simple, compact solution for your instant photo needs.
Full disclosure, I received this product for my honest, unbiased review.

Fun at First But Misses on Usefulness

The Canon Selphy Square is a small rectangular photo printer reminiscent of a large cell phone. It's too thick to fit into most back pockets though would work for cargo pants. White in color with a slightly textured looking finish, it is just barely stylish and leans more on the unassuming side. So sitting on your counter, or bookshelf, it won't look out of place and neither would it draw attention. Just there in the background until you're read to print a photo. In the box is the camera, usb charging cable, printer ribbon and print paper with a sticky back which is in cartidge form, not individual sheets. In case it wasn't clear, this is battery powered so doesn't need to be tethered via USB. Printing is via wifi only.
Printing is also solely through the Selphy Photo Layout app. The app aside from printing photos lets you do basic photo and background editing. Essentially the level you'd get from most basic photo apps. That seems to be a weak tradeoff for not being able to print from a PC though to be fair, almost all my photos are captured via a cell phone so perhaps this isn't really a downside of the printer. Once you actually have something set up to print, it takes about a minute with the printer apparently doing different colors in stages. Luckily, I was in "watch it work" mode on my first print so I didn't grab the print when it first exited the printer. That provided me with the opportunity to see it backfeed as it prints yellow, red/purple, then blue on each pass with a final fourth pass that seems to "seal" in the print. Print quality is ok, I would say a bit better than my inkjet printer but not professional quality. It is better than some instant printer options and with the sticky backing, still has that fun factor.
However, enjoy the about ten minutes of fun while it lasts because there's only ten prints per cartridge. It seems like it would get expensive quickly to print a lot with this and while it seems it encourages fun an experimentation, with a small number of prints per cartridge, you will spend a lot more time cherry picking and editing your photos. If anything, this would be better served with more investment in optimizing the cost of prints or the pocketability of the printer versus the app as the app functionality is nothing unique nor does it innovate on any photo editing features. It certainly is fun in operation but seems like the biggest users are photogs who naturally do well at composing and selecting shots for print. For the average user, I feel this is a use once or twice then it sits in a closet until some random family event when you remember you have 3 prints remaining.

This is a super fun device to have! It would be perfect for decorating your room or using as gifts for a friend. It's small enough to carry around and I love the range of colors. The app however is a bit outdated and could be a lot easier to use and have more features to edit with. The printing paper can be a bit pricey but other than that I love it!

I take a lot of pictures on my phone and whenever I want physical copies it takes me a lot of time and quite a bit of money to go somewhere in order to get them developed so I figured this would be the best solution for me! I've been printing pictures for the past week and have been pretty satisfied with how they come out. The SELPHY printer is so easy to pair with your phone, you just need to download the cannon SELPHY app and connect your phone and you're ready to print! I love how it leaves space for you to write short descriptions of the photo, I love storing physical memories!

The smaller/mobile printer market is a very saturated one. The QX10 being yet another offering from a big camera maker to try and grab a share of the market.
To jump right into it -- being a "big camera maker" with a lot of resources at their disposal, you'd think Canon would be able to address the biggest complaint for the QX10; the app.
You have to use the app to get this to work. You can make compositions/collages/edits via the app. Printing has to be done through it, as well. Connecting to do the initial setup is handled through it, too. To reiterate; everything *requires* the app to function. So, if you have a bad app the entire experience is going to have issues.
Connecting to activate everything was a problem. My phone, app, and the QX10 refused to communicate the first few attempts I made at getting everything up and running. Finally, after restarting my phone (Pixel 3XL), uninstalling and reinstalling the Canon required app, things got sorted out and running. The end of the world? No. But, given how simple the app is, that the printer requires it, etc etc, you would think Canon would have ALL the bugs and issues ironed out at this point. Especially considering the basics of this printer and the app have been out for sometime now and are merely updated versions.
To wrap up on the app. It really is very simple/straight forward. But, that's both a good and a bad thing. It's so simple you are left wondering why it doesn't work immediately every single time. And also, it is so simple you wish you could use something more elaborate once you get it all up and running and are used to it.
With all that out of the way, everything else is extremely straight forward. You can add photos to your composition, edit them, do your collages, all your typical editing and manipulating tasks, then push them to the printer. Considering I received this as part of the TIN program I was only given media that came with the device; 3 sheets. If you purchase the QX10 be sure to grab extra sheets, otherwise you are going to run out of things to print extremely quickly. So, also would like to point out that maybe Canon should have thought of that for those attempting to review this item. As it stands, I was able to mess with 4 different projects before twiddling my thumbs.
I will also point out that while I am in no hurry to purchase more of the proprietary printer paper packs, I did let my daughter mess with the last photo and she really enjoyed the process as well as being able to stick her photo to her laptop. With that in mind we can clearly see the demographic this printer is aimed at. While it might not resonate so acutely with me, the younger crowd will certainly "get" it and ask for the aforementioned refills on an every other day basis. :)
Quality-wise, the printer itself is very nice. Weight isn't so light that it feels like you're going to break it, but is hefty/sturdy enough to feel solid. Print quality is great considering the small size output.
Printing requires the device be flat, you can't print with it titled or on it's side. Not a huge problem, but if you are out and about don't expect it to print with the best of results unless you lay it flat. The output slot also should be kept clear as the paper will feed in/out a few times to apply the various stages of color during the printing process before finally ejecting the finished photo which takes ~30 seconds from start to finish.
Battery hasn't been an issue as I've only been able to print those 3 sheets. Reading other reviews and watching various videos I've seen many say that if you load the full capacity (10 sheets) you will run out of juice somewhere between 15-20 photos.
All in all, the QX10 is a nice little printer. If I were ~20 years younger I might rate this a 4, but still not a 5. The frustrations and limited options for use outside of the app are going to dock it at least 1 star all day long. So, until that gets squared away there's no way this deserves a full 5-star rating. The other star is being withheld as a device like this has the ability to appeal to a wider demographic of users. I love tech, I use various devices and am constantly on the look out for new things to use/interact with. Canon has the potential to get something like the QX10 into the hands of 35-65 year older users and make them say "whoa, where has this been all my photograph taking life?!" but this just misses the mark in that regard. Might even be something as simple as allowing the printer to work with out photo creation apps, or maybe offering different mediums to print (sizes, paper type, etc etc) I don't know, but *something*...as it stands the QX10 is all a little to restricted/confined in that regard.
I would recommend it if I knew someone was really wanting a printer for printing insta-photos and/or other on-the-go type moments, but only at a sale price. It's a very specific device as it stands meaning I could only recommend it for a very specific end-user. Or if you have a tween that is addicted to taking/printing their photos on various surfaces. :)

I think this printer is cute and is definitely niche. I read the instructions to make sure I didn't put the paper (only 3 printable sheets) or the ink roller (sample size ink) into the device incorrectly. I noticed in the manual that it says there are sticker papers, so I'm guessing this is a translation error as there were no "sticker papers".
My overall issue with this device is the cost to print tiny (apx 3x3) pictures that are offset by an inch or so.
The prints are great, and I can see this being a great gift for someone who scrapbooks or enjoys printing "retro" styled pictures. I recommend it if you don't mind the price on special paper and ink.

Picked up this printer because I liked the idea of printing directly from my phone versus a friend of mine that has one of those Fiji instant cameras. The quality on this is definitely superior when comparing it to the pictures from the Fiji instant camera. Of course it does cost twice the price. It only prints one size photo, a 2.7"x2.7", and you get 20 pictures for $15 including ink. The printer only comes with a sample pack of 3 picture blanks so make sure you go ahead and order a extra pack if you actually want to use it beyond that. Quality is solid though and it works well so glad I got it.

I was really impressed with how simple and easy to use this printer was.
Setup was a little tricky only because it wasn't clear that the QR code was hidden inside of the device. Fortunately, the app called this out before I wasted too much time searching for it.
Once setup, the device worked beautifully.
The app is intuitive, and the pictures are sharp and vibrant. The photos look a lot like old school Polaroid instant photos, but they're a fair amount smaller.
I wish that the app had more options for stamps and borders, but overall I'm happy with it.
