Excellent camcorder
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Convenient to use with my Mac and OS High Sierra. Sturdy-it still works after being dropped. One problem: Canon needs to upgrade the software for transferring files to computer, so it will work with Mac OS Catalina.

Serious problems I had using the VIXIA HF R800
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought my VIXIA HF R800 camera to use on a vacation trip to Arizona. I had two serious problems with the VIXIA. I was mostly outdoor using the VIXIA on bright sunny days and I was frustrated because in bright sun about the only thing I could see on the touch-screen was glare or a reflection of myself and what was behind me. When the sun was low in the sky and behind me or to the side, it was often impossible to see what I was recording. I found myself filming blind and having to guess or estimate what I was shooting. This problem made it very difficult or impossible to zoom in close to something or someone for a close-up or when I was trying to follow something that was moving. If I cupped my hand over the touch screen or held my hat above it to block out the sun it would sometimes help. But more often than not it would not help much. This glare and reflection was a problem not only when recording but also during playback. I had to get out of the sun into my car to view the takes I had made. When I hiked away from my car, which was often, I had no way of reviewing my takes. The only remedy I found for this problem was to get under the shade of a tree or structure. This allowed me to see what was on the screen. If I wanted to take a shoot from a specific point and there was no shade I had to shoot blind or find a spot close by where I could be under a shadow. Another problem I had with the VIXIA was the record/stop button. It must be pushed once to start the recording and again to stop recording. Because of the location of this button I found it awkward to hold the camera while recording and keeping my fingers near the button ready to stop the camera. Moving my fingers and pressing the button caused jigging and movement at the end of each recording. I tried pressing the record/stop button slowly and gently to reduce the jigging and movement at the end of each take. This led to failing to turn of the recording and the VIXIA kept on shooting. When this happened and I started to take what I thought was another separate shot by pressing the record/stop button to start recording I was in fact shutting down the camera. This made me miss shots and caused the camera to use up its battery unnecessarily between attempted shots. This was not a problem when I was shooting indoors or outdoors out of the bright sun. I could see a small red dot when the VIXIA was filming. But outdoors because of reflection and glare (the problem I described above) it was sometimes difficult to see the red dot and realize that the camera was still filming. I would have preferred a button you pushed to start and a released to shut of the filming. When continuous hands off takes were needed a lock button could have been provided. VIXIA’s effort to combine these functions in the record/stop button was not to my liking. The VIXIA comes with a small abbreviated manual in three languages that gives you little info on how it works. It is more of a startup guide. You can get additional information by using the touch screen (if you can see it) and moving through menus which gives you additional bits of information. If you want a comprehensive manual you must access it on line. I found myself wanting information about settings and how they would have affected an image (and of course if there was a way that I could reduce the touch screen glare.) This information was not in the manual that came with the VIXIA or on the menus I could find. Frustratingly I was in an area of Arizona where I could not access the internet. If you do not have a smart phone, or need to go to areas in the US (or outside) where there is no access to the Internet or links for smart phones you should consider downloading and printing a copy of the full manual.

Pretty good, man.
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this for a sort of "on the side" filming hobby if you will. It works fine for what I need it to do, but obviously, there are better cameras out there at higher prices. With some adjusting of the settings and post-production work, you can get videos to a pretty decent quality! I do plan to upgrade in the future, but for now, I'm perfectly content with this one. Especially at this price.
