Like a video doorbell but for your garage
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I never knew I needed a “smart” garage door keypad until this MyQ came out. It can do more than just open and close your garage. Full features are with a paid subscription. More on this later. Setup was very easy. I never had a hiccup on setting up any new devices with the MyQ app so kudos to their programmers. You do need to charge the battery before you can install so plan on 5+ hours for the initial charge. It is battery only with no option to hardwire. Most garage door keypads are battery anyways but this is also a video camera so the battery is a bit larger. You do need the MyQ app to use this keypad and also a ladder to reach your garage door programming buttons. The phone app walks you step-by-step with the install. Just 2 supplied screws into the garage door jamb. The kit includes a 20 degree backing plate so that the camera is slightly aimed down your driveway. You can buy a 100 degree swivel backing plate on their website for extra money. Once paired to your MyQ app, you can setup push notifications so that you will be immediately alerted to either motion or keypresses. You can also see snippets of the motion on your phone lock screen or smart watch but currently lacks a way to snooze said motion. This can be annoying if I’m playing with the kids on the driveway and constantly triggering the motion alerts. The keypad is lit when pressed but does not automatically turn on when you approach. Something worth noting is the lack of cover for the exposed buttons. I live where harsh winters are normal so I would be curious if the buttons freeze over with no cover. The camera quality is great for being battery operated. You can drop in live anytime with the app or watch the recordings that triggered the alert. But only with a subscription. (See next section on subscription details) There is a “call” button on the keypad where someone can press it to immediately alert you to view the live camera and use 2-way communication. The speaker is adequate for a quick conversation. I can’t see this being widely used as no one would expect a “call” button on a garage door keypad. But what makes this keypad “smart” is the ability to assign special PIN codes for individuals. I can setup a special code for each person I want access and also limit the day and hours that said code will work. My home cleaner can have their own PIN to get into my garage and I will be notified when that particular PIN has been used to open my garage. I can also see a video of them entering it in the keypad too. Night vision works great for what it needs to do. It has 2 IR blasters that really only needs to light up a person approaching the keypad. If you need a camera to monitor your entire driveway, this keypad camera combo isn’t it. Subscription….why oh why is there a subscription? Their subscription plans range from Free to $9.99 a month. The more you pay, the more devices you can have under the same plan. The subscription essentially gets you access to their “cloud” to retrieve recorded videos. Without a paid plan, you will not be able to see recordings but can view live footage. The paid plans also get you their “smart” detection so you can filter out false alarms and only alert you if a person has been detected. And lastly, the paid plan gets you “preview” notifications of the event. If you stick to the free version, you will only get notified that motion has been detected but no video recording is tied to the alert. In summary, the MyQ smart keypad is a brilliant piece of tech. The abilities to assign different codes for everyone needing access is exactly what I needed to control access to my garage. The video recordings adds a peace of mind on who’s pushing the buttons. It is rechargeable battery operated and MyQ tech support claims 2 months for a typical household. With how long it takes to charge the battery, I would recommend picking up an extra battery to have on hand from their website for about $35. No solar exists as of this review but I would buy a solar charger if MyQ ever offered one in the future.

Innovative but needs improvement
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Chamberlain – myQ Smart Garage Video Keypad is a great first iteration with several areas for improvement. Pros: • Unboxing – Everything comes packed securely in a small box and is nicely organized. • Setup – Using the myQ app, setup was straightforward. I simply followed the in-app instructions and had the keypad up and running in about 5-10 minutes; although, it was not as fast at connecting compared to the garage camera. It comes with mounting hardware and replacing the existing keypad was no issue. • Personalized access – I like the fact that you can create unique codes for family, friends, or service providers who need access to your garage but with the ability to revoke that access at any time. • App – The app is easy to use and allows you to access the camera from your smartphone. If you pay for cloud-storage, you can view prior motion events. Cons: • Single garage door programing – I mean really?! Why can I only program it to open one garage door? My “dumb” keypad can open all 3 of my garages and my gate. As someone with multiple garages, I would likely not get another myQ Smart Keypad unless future iterations could open all my garages and gate on a single keypad. There is no excuse for this and hopefully this can be addressed in a firmware update. • Battery life – Battery life is average at best, especially depending on how much motion the camera picks up. Chamberlain only provides you with a single battery so you must remove the keypad to charge the battery or buy another one. For the price, two batteries should be included so they can be quickly swapped out. • Cloud-storage – In order to keep any online storage, you need to subscribe to cloud storage. While it is not overly expensive, especially if you wait for a coupon, it is still another cost that must be incurred. It would be nice if 7-day storage was included at no additional cost.

The myQ Video keypad works independently of a subscription. Once you install your video keypad you will be able to operate your pre-programed garage door and view real time live video motion events. The myQ Video storage plans allow you to personalize alerts, record and view motion events and access them at your convenience thru the myQ application. We offer a variety of plans that allow you to store video events for 7 days or 30 days to view and download and share if needed. Million dollar product 100 execution
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Let me start out by saying there is SOOO much potential here, its a million dollar product with 100 dollar effort. Where the My Q smart garage keypad shines is the features it has 1. Remote access set for guest 2. Time frames for that remote access 3. Video/Audio and call feature functions 4. Solid build The Bad Connecting this thing is a pain the ***. I had to pair and unpair this thing multiple times. The app crashes and wont go into loading features. The gate/door might pair but you wont know it. Mines paired however wouldn't open when the app said it was opening, the only way i knew it worked was I heard the garage door switch make a sound so i just went through the pairing process as if it worked. Another huge issue with Keypad is the keys, they are caved inwards and have a issue getting stuck in the housing, mind you this is happening when the device is brand new. I can only imagine how they will age especially being outdoors. So while it has some great features and the product is something that needed and wanted the setup is a pain and I am a bit concerned with how it will do over long term period.

Amazing product
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’m not sure why people have said that this product dies within a week of use. I’ve had mine for 2 weeks now and it’s still at full charge. The camera is much better than the ring cameras and captures any movement you’d like. You do have to pay to record videos that the camera captured, but you do get a 30 day free trial. The installation is very easy, as well as connecting it to your garage door opener. My favorite feature is that you can create a temporary code to allow people to open your garage without giving them your main code. The temporary expires after a certain amount of time that you prescribe. I’d highly recommend purchasing this product if you want a smart opener.

Great addition for adding extra security
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have a Chamberlain garage door opener but no exterior keypad, so when I saw the Video Key Pad product I figured it would be a great addition for monitoring and security of my garage with the added bonus of key pad access. Initial setup of the Video Key Pad started with downloading the MyQ app. Turns out that even though my garage door opener has the MyQ logo it does not have the “Wifi” logo on it, so I could not just add the Video Key Pad and sync them together. After some research I saw that I needed to add a MyQ Smart Hub to connect to my opener to my home’s wifi. No problem, went down to my local big box store and picked one up for $25. Got back home and setup of the Smart Hub with the MyQ app went seamlessly. However, when adding the Video Key Pad I ran into issues when trying to connect to the garage door opener. It looked like it was connected, for example, when I would punch in the pin number I setup to open the garage door I would get a MyQ app notification saying the door opened but that was not the case, the door didn’t move. Same thing when closing it. After much searching on the internet I could not find an answer. Usually I can figure these things out or if I can’t I’ll just return the product and say to heck with it, I’ll get something else. But in this case I really wanted it to work so I did something that I never do, I actually called the Chamberlain Support 800 number. After transferring me to the proper support rep, she walked me through removing the device and setting it up again, although I had done this twice already. The fix ended up being re-setting up the pin number (pushing the opener’s ‘learn’ button then entering the pin number) multiple times. On the 4th attempt lo-and-behold the garage door opened. The app setup instructions don’t say to keep doing this over and over until it eventually works but that’s what it took. The rep was very patient and could see everything I was doing on her end through her computer. Full props to her. I didn’t catch her name but wish I did because she fixed my issue. The video and audio of the key pad are both great. Lots of options for customizing what and when to record, how/when to receive notifications, etc. There is a subscription fee as low as $3.99/mo so keep that in mind. But to me, that’s pretty inexpensive for a very effective system. As I said, setup was a bit of a struggle and took much longer than it should have. But once its setup I think it’s a great product for monitoring and protecting your garage.

Necessary added for Wi-Fi outages that affect hub
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The keypad was easy to install physically. Hit a snag when connecting to home network. It would not stay connected. After multiple attempts at connecting, I exchanged it for the same unit. The new unit connected no problem on first try and has been working since. I like it so far. Only had it connected for a few weeks. Good video quality and reaction time. Occasionally lag when connecting to video. I wish the battery was able to be purchased in store fro have a backup handle because battery charge time is four hours.

The Most Frustrating Setup You Will Ever Encounter
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.myQ does some great things with wifi enabled garage door openers and the experience there (including the app) is great... but as they shift into things that aren't their wheelhouse, I just can't recommend this. It's a step too far into a market they aren't ready to engage in yet. I wish they'd integrate with Yale or Nest or some other company that has more experience in this market and more established hardware. Starting with the unboxing: the first thing you have to do is charge the battery for 8-10 hours (no joke, this is in the manual). I'm going to repeat that, in all caps, in case you're skimming: THE BATTERY REQUIRES 8-10 HOURS TO CHARGE. ON A DEVICE THAT LIVES OUTSIDE YOUR HOUSE. THAT YOU WILL HAVE TO UNINSTALL TO CHARGE. 8-10 HOURS. HOURS. This is, apparently, par for the course - as because I ran out of time to do the install on the day I'd planned, I had to postpone for two weeks. At which point, I had to CHARGE THE BATTERY AGAIN. Keep in mind, the device itself was not sitting there waiting to connect - the battery had drained that much in standby mode. Imagine coming home from a nice nighttime bike ride with your partner only to discover that you cannot open the garage door because you have to charge your garage door opener batteries for 8-10 hours first. You sigh resignedly as you fumble for your phone in the dark to find the myQ app to try to get your garage door opened a different way. It'd be great fodder for America's Funniest Home Videos except that your opener's camera won't capture it - because the battery needs to charge (for 8-10 hours). Let's rewind to the setup process: you have to confirm via individual checkboxes that you must tap: that you have your wifi password, a strong wi-fi signal, bluetooth enabled, and the video keypad within reach. You cannot proceed until you check all 4 boxes and click "proceed". This becomes relevant in a minute. Once you finish that process, you can then connect your battery and try to start the connection process to your WiFi. It took me NINE (9) attempts on this device to get it to connect. Each of those times, I had to restart the entire set up process, including checking all 4 of those boxes, reselecting my WiFi, entering my WiFi password, double-checking it was correct, hitting connect, seeing my router acknowledge the connection, and then the device blinking at me with an LED error light that something was amiss. From there, I had to try, try again -- meanwhile the App tells you: try restarting your router, try resetting the device, try doing this, that and the other thing... nothing changed at all between the first and the ninth attempt besides that the device suddenly decided it wanted to work. OK, so you ping customer support on chat - they direct you to call the 1-800 number where you're directed to a noisy call center that cannot hear you while on speaker phone. Great. Checking the support options in the app, it becomes near impossible to find the device you are asking about, so you search for the signal you get: blue and green flashing LEDs and it turns out that there are a lot of articles around this for many of their same devices... and the same unhelpful instructions to restart your router, make sure you're close enough, etc -- or to just restart the process entirely. It's just a bad user experience all the way around with this. Once the keypad finally connects, a firmware update is required. Oh, and they want you to sign up for an expensive year-long video storage subscription contract without telling you that you have a 30-day free trial first. So... a full hour later, I was able to test the camera. The camera is kinda low quality, which maybe isn't critical since you're mostly after folks who are messing around with your keypad with their face right in the camera, so... but the angle itself can't really be modified and you cannot flush-mount the device, it has to be angled outward with the bracket that comes in the box. Did I mention that you'll want to keep a tiny screwdriver handy because you'll need to take the thing off every few days to charge the battery? There's a two-way talk function but my experience with the device while in my house indicated a level of latency that was not conducive to carrying on a normal conversation with someone who intends to use it as a "doorbell" of some sort. Don't do this to yourself. Skip it. myQ should know better. Their app and wifi enabled garage door system is wonderful. This leap to more connected devices is distinctively not wonderful. This device and experience from unboxing to in-app experience to install does NOT live up to their otherwise excellent standards.

Good for the money
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great garage keypad. The camera, microphone and speaker are good quality considering the price. The ability to set notifications, add users, and setup how and where the camera detects is great. The only issue I have is the WiFi range and it’s not just the keypad. I also have a garage camera that is mounted within 7 feet of the WiFi AP and both indicate a medium signal strength.

Pretty good, but manufacturer nickel and dimes you
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Purchased this on Black Friday, so had a decent sale. The keypad works well, and the app does a very good job of walking you through configuration and setup with your garage opener - was actually very impressed. I took a star because they only include a static angled mount, and they do have a swivel mount, but they want to charge you another 30 bucks for it. For the normal price of this, that’s a bit harsh. The battery is also somewhat quick to drain — in the past two days, it’s lost 15% of charge, so maybe it’ll last 14 days before the charge is completely gone. I would say get another battery, but that’s another 40 bucks. Just something to keep in mind.

Nice lookibg keypad
|Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was a hige upgrade from my old garage keypad and looks much better. From a functionality standpiint it has some nice features, like the camera which is a nice touch. The only reason I wouldn’t give this a 5 is that My Q has integration with RING and it gives me a punch through to the garage door in my Ring app but in dont get the camera view which gives me another app to have to use to see that camera.
