I prefer having my packages dropped off in the garage, not on the porch for security reasons—especially during the holidays. Our home becomes a package depot and the front porch is an obvious target. We have security cameras out front, but they don’t tie into the deliveries. MyQ smart connect and camera setup allows us to have our packages from Amazon put inside the garage securely AND it records the process each time the door opens and closes. This function and connection to the Key service is what makes the MyQ setup most valuable to us. A high quality motion detection camera is not all that unique. Installation is super easy, and it pairs right up with the MyQ opener. The picture is good, magnet base for ease to move and swivel all good features. It’s well built and the app is intuitive (dial the notifications up or down to taste—with no kids in the house, I chose to only get delivery notifications). We have several inside and out. But we love the way this one works with Key—that sets it apart and I highly recommend.

So my regular push button remotes have had dead batteries or completely failed on me before…which is really bad when you lock the door behind you but only grabbed your cell phone… Anyway…this decide was easy to set up. Instructions could probably been a little more clean, but as far as getting everything going…it was a snap. It linked to my wifi on first try. The picture quality is good there has t been any lag that I have noticed. The settings and app are easy to navigate. You can control the motion detection settings as well as the notifications. My garage is 20 by 26. It sets on the far wall and I get a good picture of everything coming and going. It I move it the corner I can literally see the whole garage.

The camera has a 140⁰ wide angle lens that can capture 1080p full HD video. It has HDR and night vision which I thought was surprisingly good. The camera is on a swivel that you manually adjust to any viewing angle, a full 360 degrees. The mount can be screwed on or you can attach to your garage door opener or any metallic object using the magnet on the base of the mount. It has 2-way audio communication so you can talk to the delivery person (works with Key by Amazon). The audio quality coming out from camera is not the best but it is clear enough to get the message through. You can use the MyQ app to disable the mic if don’t need it to record audio and you can also adjust the volume of the speaker. When you link the camera and the garage opener, you can control the garage door and watch a live feed on the same screen. You need to have a MyQ enabled garage door opener and If you don’t have one, you can add the Smart Garage Control to most garage door openers made after 1993. Video storage options available with subscription. Without a subscription, you only get live streaming… boo! My smart home is heavily invested in HomeKit enabled devices. I also use Google Assistant for interacting with my devices and I use Google displays for viewing my security camera streams. I was not able to link the MyQ Smart Garage camera to the Google Home app. So the MyQ app was the only app that I was able to use to view the stream from this camera. This camera works as a security camera in my garage but it falls really short on features and compatibility for me. I think MyQ needs to step up their game in integrating with smart homes.

About 2 years ago, I upgraded my garage door openers to Chamberlain myQ belt driven openers (great openers by the way, very quiet), so my openers already have wifi and I can open and close with the myQ app. Adding a camera should be very simple…and it was! The box included everything I needed to mount and power the camera. Using the app, I was able to add the camera and setup the wifi without a hitch. I than took it out to the garage and using the magnetic mount, attached it to my opener, plug the USB cable into the other available outlet and I was done. Setup took about all of 10 minutes! The time and date is setup automatically as well. Performance: The camera is very clear; the 1080p HD resolution delivers excellent quality video. The wide angle lens is wide enough that I can pretty much cover both doors with 1 camera. The camera mount is nice, the magnetic mount and the 360-degree swivel makes it easy to find an optimal position. Low light video is also very good, images are clear. I found the app to be straightforward and generally, very user friendly. You can “link” the camera to a particular door, so when that door is opened or closed, it would record, although the motion should trigger it to record anyway. There’s a microphone button so you can speak to someone in the garage while you’re viewing the video. Motion sensing and door opening recordings worked well. I’d get notifications each time the door opened and when the camera detected motion. A camera like this would be super handy for those with amazon key delivery. I had key delivery, but then I turned it off, it was easier to open my front door to retrieve the package rather than going to garage. I haven’t lost a delivery yet all these years. Video storage: The lack of local storage or X days or even X hours of free storage is the biggest negative of this camera. I understand that all companies are looking for recurring revenue streams, but to not include even a few days or hours of free video history makes this camera of limited use. You can only view live video. myQ offers 2 pay packages, one offers 30 days of video and the other 7 days of video history. The prices are reasonable and won’t break the bank. But why subscribe to a garage door camera when you can subscribe to some other brand of camera that offers wireless cameras, doorbells cameras etc. Summary: I wanted to love this product, and if we’re talking about the product itself, the camera, I like it a lot. It’s the lack of free storage that makes it not worth it in my opinion. Look elsewhere, there are better options to monitor your garage AND the rest of your home.

Good camera to integrate with MyQ

This camera has good image quality in both lighted and pitch-dark environments. Picks up sounds well too. Very easy to mount with the magnet under my LiftMaster opener and setup in the MyQ app along with the MyQ Smart Control opener. Very nice to be able to use the single app to open/close the garage and see the video image. And (for now) to have a history of recordings in the app. My main tip is: 1) The motion detection is very sensitive. With it cranked up to high sensitivity, I was getting dozens of recordings for every time a bug would fly by. I wound up dialing my setting down to low (~25%) and seems ok. My main criticism is: 2.) After 1-month trial, I'd have to pay monthly to retain recordings? No thanks. There are other, and frankly cheaper, cam options out there. The only real plus for this cam vs many others is that it ties in with Amazon Key if you want that, but there are other simple workarounds. Live view will still be available after the trial, but for the price of this cam to add on another monthly fee to see recordings, I'll pass. If you don't have any other smart-home cameras or anything and want a nice simple cam to integrate with a MyQ garage opener, this is a very good option.

Good WiFi Camera requires subscription for storage

I have gone through a few camera systems to find a good match throughout my house. Unfortunately the Chamberlain myQ Smart Garage Camera isn't a good match for my purposes. I happen to have a Chamberlain garage door opener with myQ functionality but it is an older model that requires an internet gateway component. If you don't have a myQ garage door opener, Chamberlain actually sells what I would characterize as a universal retrofit kit (MyQ-G0401) that works on all the major door openers manufactured after 1993 that have the safety sensors. The setup of the myQ Smart Garage Camera was pretty easy. It needs to be in range of WiFi and you set it up via the myQ app on your mobile device through a Bluetooth connection. Adding the camera in the app went very smoothly. If you're just looking for basic functionality, you can just leave it like this. The myQ system allows you to link your garage door opener so that you have a button to open/close your garage door while in live view mode. For that, you need to either have the myQ functionality set up via a myQ opener, myQ opener with internet gateway or the universal retrofit kit mentioned above. The camera itself delivers nice crisp images, decent 2 way audio and provides two mounting options. The stand has a snap on adapter to allow you to screw in the adapter and then snap the stand to the adapter if you want to secure the camera to a wall or ceiling. The magnetic mount lets you attach it to any magnet friendly surface. Surprisingly, the underside of my garage door opener was cooperative to this. I previously thought was just plastic. With that in mind, Chamberlain includes a 10' power cable, so it gives you greater flexibility to mount this camera. With the myQ app configured for this camera and a few tweaks to the settings like the motion sensitivity and the custom notification messages, I was getting appropriate alerts for motion in the garage. Where I was particularly disappointed with this system is where the myQ system requires a subscription in order to store videos. So without the subscription, you get alerts, but cannot view the motion that triggered the alert. But you can jump into the app and get a live view. For video storage for a rolling 7 days, you need to pay $3 a month or for a rolling 30 days of storage, you need to pay $10 a month with discounts if you pay for an annual subscription. I think this is really steep for 1 camera. In general, I like that this is a WiFi based camera, but having to pay for any amount of storage turns me off from this system. Having to use the myQ app to view the video is slightly off-putting since my other cameras are on a different system/app. I like the video and audio quality and it's nice to be able to open/close the garage door while viewing video. If myQ would just grant 3 days of free storage, I think it could garner a 5 star review.

Installation was easy but I did have my handyman do it. I followed along with him though and in hindsight I think I could have done it myself. Having the base be magnetic helps you to mount it without any issue if you can find a place for it. The overall camera presents a very good image, although not 4K. I will mention that I had no problems pairing the camera to my iPhone X S. Now listen up folks, this does require a subscription to capture events, otherwise you are just going to get a notification and then go to a live camera feed, but the good news is the subscription is inexpensive. I did spend some time configuring it and setting it up so I wouldn't get too many notifications, something a lot of us with many cameras know can be a real problem and so far it seems to be doing a good job of not spamming me. So far for my wife and I we feel adding this camera has gone pretty well. I think the camera is an excellent addition to my repertoire of security cameras and it's nice to finally fill that gap (prior to this I had no camera in or around the garage). RECOMMENDED!

The Good: The camera Field of View and operating temperature range are well optimized for the garage. 140 degrees let's you see quite a bit! It integrated easily with MyQ. Physical installation is easy with the magnetic mounting option and the long power cord provided. Image quality is also good, in line with other cameras out there these days, clear and crisp video. The Bad: Really only big issue - no free storage options, not even a single day. Cheapest subscription is $30/year, making this very expensive over the life of the product. If live video is all you need, than this is good, but if you want to see even any activity over the past day, you'll need to pay.

The Chamberlain - myQ® Smart Garage CameraTM is a stand-alone or integrated camera for the myQ Garage System. The clarity in both day or night mode is excellent, offering full HD, and easy to use at home or away via the app. I found the camera to be excellent. It worked great independently of the myQ Garage System. Unfortunately, the myQ Garage System did not work with my brand, but the camera works perfectly giving an opportunity to double-check if our garage door is open or closed from anywhere. Our family occasionally checks on our place during the day so we can see who is there and when. PROS - Chamberlain quality and innovation - HQ HD in both day or night mode - Easy to set up - Easy to use app - If you have the correct garage door brand, it can integrate into the myQ Garage System CONS - None at this time

Excellent garage vidcam, door opener synch limited

I like the camera design and performance. The setup took all of 3 minutes, the software loaded quickly, pairing w my iPhone was immediate. The lens provides a very wide angle and very good focus. The camera design and mounting bracket made it extremely easy to locate in just a few minutes. Once mounted, the camera may be swiveled 360 degrees and up and down on its magnetic base to capture everything desired. The video events are stored via an inexpensive subscription ($2.50/month via the 7 day video event storage plan). The software makes it very easy to selectively look back on all events triggered by (adjustable sensitivity) motion. The software permits filters such alerts when door is opened, or when closed, or for night vision, or to accommodate upside down mount by flipping the image. The camera works with Google Assistant, Ring, IFTTT, etc. My criticism was the inability to connect the camera/Smart Garage Control to my garage door openers, and thus be able to control my garage doors. My home was built in 2005, and the garage door openers are made by ROMAC. I thought ROMAC would pair with the Chamberlain camera/Smart Garage Control (just as the built in garage door opener buttons built into my 2017 & 2020 Acura cars do), but I was wrong. I can't even receive alert notices (though the events are recorded). There are a limited number of garage door openers that synch and will integrate with the camera/smart controller and allow control of the garage doors. There are a small number of manufacturers of garage door openers that will monitor, but still not allow control of the garage door openers ( for example, Marantec openers). This was a major disappointment. In summary: An excellent video camera for the garage or elsewhere; however, the camera and the Smart garage controller only allow garage door control for a limited number of garage door opener manufacturers.

The myQ Smart Garage cam is a stylish, small, camera with simple yet handy mounting system - a strong magnet on the base makes camera placement easy! The things I like about this camera are unfortunately outweighed by some of the negatives. Some of the pros are that the camera mounts super easily if you have a magnetic surface to stick it to, such as the bottom of your garage door opener, where a lot of the stock photos of this thing show it mounted. The night vision / dark mode image capture is really good - even in my completely dark garage, I get clear images that even have some color left to them. The images also feature date and time stamped in the upper left corner, so if you had to submit to law enforcement it is a good bit of information to have on the video. Unfortunately, the list of things I don't care for on this camera gets quite long. The biggest gripe I have is that it's yet another ecosystem you have to buy into if you want any kind of video storage or video clips to come to your mobile device. You can get basic alerts without a video clip sent to you, but if you want the video clip or any kind of video storage you have to opt for a $30/year or $100/year (or $3/$10 per month) plan to do any kind of video storage or sharing. The difference between the plans is the amount of video storage that you get - either 7 or 30 days. I realize we live in a subscription based world - everyone is battling it out for your recurring revenue. If I'm buying into a video storage ecosystem, I'd rather choose an ecosystem that has more camera options for different types of applications (outdoor, solar, indoor, small, large, wired, wireless, etc..) rather than pay the same price per month/year for a specialized camera. Note that they do give you the first 30 days of service free to try it out. The other downsides I experienced when using this camera are that the app frequently spins when trying to load the camera. I have excellent Wi-Fi in my home, three enterprise grade access points feeding 3K square feet, with other Wi-Fi devices in the garage that work great. I've also seen a message in the iOS app that states "Error - something went wrong" with an OK button, or "Unexpected error" with a "Try again" button. The overall UI for the camera is just OK. The last thing I will mention is that the most common place someone would likely mount this camera is magnetically to the bottom of their opener looking at the garage door. It's in a lot of the marketing pictures, the magnetic mount lends to that, as well as it's just plain logical to want to mount it there. The drawback here is that the emergency/manual override pull cord for the garage door hangs down in the center of the view of the camera. Around these parts, everyone has one of these override cords, it's a common thing. If the garage door is open, this is going to be in the center of the video. One other bit of information - if you have a garage door opener that does not have the myQ functionality built in, you'll likely want to use this with the myQ opener accessory. Logically and for safety reasons the myQ add-on is strongly recommended to be mounted on the ceiling near the opener so that the audible warning and light are visible to anyone in the vicinity of the garage door when it closes. Most homes have a duplex (2) outlet above the garage door - so you'd have your opener, the myQ hub/device, and now you'd need a third outlet for the power supply for the camera. You now have to add a multi outlet adapter to accommodate the third plug (Garage door opener, myQ hub, and camera). Overall, if someone asked me about this I'd say take a pass at this time. Invest in a camera ecosystem that has more options and more maturity.

Overall I give the Chamberlain myQ Smart Garage Camera 3.5 stars. If you already have a Chamberlain wi-fi enabled garage door opener, then it’s a solid add-on. Or, you can install one of their inexpensive Smart Garage Control hubs like I did to add wi-fi functionality to your non-wi-fi garage door opener. If you’re using this as a standalone security camera, especially in a non-garage environment, then you will want features that are not available in this camera. PROs • Nice integration with Chamberlain wifi-enabled garage door openers and hubs. The Chamberlain myQ app ties together motion events detected by the camera to garage door openings and closings as logged by the garage door opener/hub. Alerts can be confusing if you turn on alerts from both the camera and the door opener. I think it makes sense to only use motion alerts for the camera, and set the door opener/hub to alert you if the garage door was left open for a certain amount of time. • A magnetic base makes it super convenient to stick the camera to the garage door opener itself. No fussy installation needed. • The camera has a 2-way microphone so you can hear and talk through it. • Decent night vision. • Compatible with both 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz wifi bands. Too many home devices won’t work on 5 Ghz. • Besides the Chamberlain garage door/hub integration, what makes the camera suitable especially for a garage is its ability to operate in temperatures from -4 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. There is no waterproof rating so it is not meant to be installed outdoors, however. CONs • The biggest disadvantage of this camera is that you need a subscription to get any kind of video recordings or still images tied to alerts. Without a paid plan, you still get motion alerts, but you can only view a live stream. This is disappointing. Other vendors offer at least some recording or images on a free plan. And a recording is critical for establishing proof. • The motion detection setting is fairly crude. There is a sensitivity slider, and it certainly helped reduce false positives. However, there are no “smart” features beyond that. For example, there is no face detection or animal detection. Nor is there the ability to ignore lighting changes or motion in specific zones in the camera’s view. My garage door, for example, has windows on top. So whenever a neighbor drives by, I get an alert. Ideally, I would like the camera to ignore the windowed region. • There is no setting to adjust how long to record a motion event. I had a delivery made via Amazon Key and the recording stopped after the delivery man entered the garage. As he left the garage, a separate recording event was made. But it would be nice if the initial recording continued a little longer in case he lingered in the garage longer than he should. • No 4k resolution, just 1080p. Given this camera has to be plugged in, it should really come with better resolution. • It has a long list of compatible “works with” ecosystems. But notably absent are Apple HomeKit and Google Home (though it does work with Google Assistant). It is also supposed to work with Amazon Key, but I could never get the Amazon Key app to recognize the camera, even though it did recognize the Chamberlain wi-fi hub. • The app has intermittent issues that usually get cleared up if I restart the app. Often, the video stream isn’t immediate and takes 10 seconds or so to start. At other times, I get an “unexpected error” message on a blank playback screen when trying to view the live feed. And once in a while, if I touch the alert notification on my iPhone 11, the app doesn’t fully launch. It's not signal strength which is pretty good in my garage. In fact, it seems I run into problems mostly when the app is already running, perhaps indicating some kind of memory leak. OTHER • Field of view is 140 degrees and has a bit of fisheye warping, unlike the altered images shown on the marketing images. • One small annoyance is when I use the myQ app to open or shut the garage via the hub, I still get camera alerts. I can’t think of a reason why I would want to alert myself as I'm using the app. The only alert that makes sense from my own actions is if I forget to close the garage. There should be a way to filter out alerts from my own use of the app. If you have a compatible Chamberlain (who also owns Liftmaster) garage door opener or hub, then it’s worth considering adding a myQ security garage camera for its decent integration.
