Finally a game worth playing after yeras of WoW

I don;t feel the other reviewer that said it's beta and gave it low marks was complete in the review. The version I have is a finished product and there are no MAJOR glitches that I can see thus far. The games graphiics and effects are nothing short of impressive. It adds to the Super Hero effect of the game. If you are to compare to WoW and it will get compared then hands down it leaves a dust trail even with its recent Lich King enhancements. End game content is not known as I'm not there yet. But, character customisation is far exceedingly impressive. This game took City of Heroes which was far more basic than this and eveolved into a beautifully well rounded super hero mmo. Again it will be compared to WoW but Champions offers some things WoW does not and improved upon an already exsisting mmo so this company is not a new comer to this market. They knkow how to make an mmo. Gameplay mechanics make this game very fun. I love the public quests and reminds me of Warhammer something Warcraft severly lacked and is fun. Story lines are good, questing is very dymaic and immersive comparable to Lich King and in some cases just better questing all together as it seems to bring more excitement to the table. Instead of firing a cannor or escorting someone. You may get to escort someone while fighting also except the characters show emotion and logical AI reactions to the quest. Champions wins this on the PvE front. The AI seems to be better. Professions and crafting surprisingly is great. I did not expect it to be so complete, have a good amount of complexity to make it challenging. PvP not known yet so I can't review that. But for a first impressioni and coming from WoW , trying out Warhammer and Conan this game is great evolution from CIty of Heroes which I've played also. They took the best from all the games and evolved it into Champion Online. I don't think anyone would be sorry to try something different. Gameplay isn't exactly the same as wow but the interface you may see as familiar. Keep in miind when City of Heroes came out which was along side when WoW did that interface is pretty common. It's good, It's something new, It's not an unfinished product like Conan was, and it took Warhammers public questing and made PvE even better. I don't think you'll be sorry to play this game. Keep in mind when you first start out it's a noob zone and more of a training grounds through level 5. After that it begins and from what I saw it's far from being a disappointment. I'm looking forward to when Cryptic comes out with Star Trek Online also. If it's based on this engine they don't anything to worry about. Happy gaming. The biggest drawback on the game is in game music. Everything else will surely be enjoyed and welcomed for those looking for that "WoW" in a super hero environment. Some things are done better some things could use improvment. No game is perfect but this one is the best released to date compared to the others mentioned. And Cryptic is not new at this. They know how to make a fun mmo and succeeded with Champions Online. If you like fantasy stay with WoW, warhammer or whatever it is you play. If your looking for a change of pace and like super hero's this game won't let you down. If your a City of Heroes player which I played this is just jaw dropping in comparison. Good job Cryptic.

    Fun, fast paced MMO

The incredibly in-depth character generator and ability to mix-and-match powers for your character means you can make any sort of superhero you want. You're not limited to a couple of preset models and a handful of set classes. The game plays out like a fast paced version of other MMOs. Every character has an autoattack (melee or ranged, depending on what base power you chose) that builds energy that can be used to power stronger attacks. There's a good mix of damage, crowd control, status effects, and other active abilities (like blocking) to use in combat so that you're always thinking about what ability to use rather than simply spamming the same rotation. The game is focused on PvE content, although there seems to be a fair amount of optional instanced PvP. Leveling is done primarily through questing, along with public missions similar to what Warhammer Online introduced. I haven't had a chance to play the high level content, although I've heard very good things about the Nemesis system (you get to design your own worst enemy). There's only one server, which is sort of a mixed benefit. On one hand, it means you never have to worry about your server being over/under populated and never have to worry about not being able to play with a friend who rolled on another server. On the downside though, it means that you always have to make sure that everyone you want to play with knows to chose the same instance. It works well once people get the hang of it. The server has been very stable and lag-free (for people in the US). The patcher was down for one day at the start of open beta and people threw a fit, but they fixed the problem and its been fine ever since. Overall, I think the game is very solid for release. Like any MMO, I expect them to continue fixing bugs, balancing abilities, and adding new content as the game matures. It's a lot of fun and a good alternative to the common fantasy MMO.

    Better than City of Heroes

Unfortunately, because somebody decided to give an unreleased product 3 stars in order to complain about a typo/mistake on the Best Buy website, I now feel obligated to write an actual review. I played City of Heroes for about 18 months, which still amazes me. I haven't played an MMO seriously since then, although I've tried a few. I haven't been excited about any, either, including Champions Online. I've sort of followed it, and it appears to be the game that Cryptic wanted to make when they developed CoH. I followed that game for 3 years before it was ever released. Virtually everything Statesman wanted in CoH, but couldn't figure out how to do, is in C.O. Additionally, he outright SAID he had modeled the first (aborted) CoH on the Champions RPG. I just returned from Gencon where they had this game demo'd. I was very impressed with both character generation and gameplay (including graphics, etc). The trailers, screenshots, and previews really do not do the game justice. I'd say this really is the game CoH should have been, and I thought CoH was near perfect given the limitations of the market, and the fact that they had to develop the first superhero game ever, without any licensing. I've now gone from lack of interest to considering a lifetime subscription for $200! The graphics may look a little flat and simple cell-shaded, but it looks great on screen with a decent resolution. It really feels like you are running around inside a comic book (unlike CoH) and the visuals really pop out, background and all [although they definitely ARE backgrounds]. MMO's, by their nature, have to use lower graphics settings than other action games. I give the game 4 stars for graphics for that reason. For an MMO, this is 5 stars. The same is true of "Challenge." You can't make an impossibly hard MMO that requires a strategy guide or people will stop paying the monthly. This game is only 5 stars if you like MMO games, RPG's, comic books, and/or superhero role-playing games. Obviously if you only like FPS's or vampires, this game won't be 5 stars. Basically, if you think you might like this game, or prefer it to to CoH/CoV, you will.

Buyer be warned! Incomplete game being sold

    Posted

Please be aware that this game is very buggy and incomplete, the developers will try to tell you that this game will be an ongoing development, but it's no excuse for a product you'll purchase with your hard earned money to be on a Best Buy shelf in the condition it is in. The game is buggy, the server is unstable and laggy, and many features have been turned off till a later date so they can work on them after they get your money. This game also plans to charge you a monthly subscription fee to pay for ongoing development on this game and their other games still in development that are running out of money. On top of the subscription fee they plan on charging you, they are also going to want you to pay for virtual items they will sell for real world cash. They want to sell you a virtual item that doesn't exist, for real physical money. As for the gameplay itself? If you've played MMORPG's in the past, you probably won't like this game because it is very dumbed down. They try to claim that their combat is action oriented, but when you play it you toggle on a button and the character just shoots beams from their hand while you wait for a bar to build up just to push another buttong and watch that bar fill up again. The games forums are filled with people complaining that this game needs another 6-12 months development time. I highly advise anyone tempted to try this game to either get in the beta test period or wait for a free trial before purchasing this broken product. I was following this game for over a year excited for it to release, luckily I was able to try the game in closed and open betas and got to see the real unfinished game. Please try it before you buy it.

    So far ... so good.

I am still relatively new to playing this game. However, character appearance is extremely varied (and can be time-consuming), even if the general powers aren't. Graphically , it is very disappointed when compared to other MMORPGs (WoW, GW, AoC, CoX). I never have liked the forcefield worlds in games like this and CoX. I prefer a free-flowing world, even if it was written into the storyline. The starting crafting professions do not have much variation. The "tutorial" zone has a lot of reading and can drag, if you try and read it all. For the most part, it is quick to get through, if you are an experienced MMORPG player. Travel powers are accessible by the time you leave the tutorial, which is nice. So far, my husband and I would rate it better than CoX. Keep in mind that again.. I haven't played the game into the higher levels yet.

Another MMO launch bites the dust

Like said below, try this game before you buy it. It's in a very early beta stage still, despite them charging money for you to be a lab rat for them. As I type this, the server is down yet again for yet another "emergency maintenance". The gameplay is really dumbed down and is just another mindless button masher that takes no skill and offers little action feel to them. They offer no in game Mic support, so you have to rely on chat typing to communicate. But that really shouldn't matter, because this game offers no reason whatsoever to even want to group up with fellow players. Final thoughts, wait a good 6 months, then get a 10 day free trial version to see if the game is still in a beta phase or not at that time.

Coming from games like World of warcraft, Age of Conan, Warhammer and all those types... I can say i was skeptical when i joined the beta. This game blew my mind. Its actually FUN. When i say fun i don't mean "Hey lets have fun and grind 12390812903812903 mobs for 91238102983 hours and waste time" I mean generally fun to play. Its pickup and drop-able at any time *Not a time leech like WoW* The customization is UNMATCHED. It is amazing to see what people come up with. Unlike most MMORPGS there is not any set in stone "Classes" You can mix and match skills as you please.

Best MMO to come out in years

I try every MMO, and at some point, fantasylands and spaceships get old fast. I was pleasantly surprized to see how Champions Online gameplay was, in comparison to City of Heroes. The feel is similar, but the fighting, powers, crafting, and social systems are very different. Warning, this can be a very fast paced game at times. Not like WoW, EQ, SWG, CoX, which are very slow in comparison. The combat is very quick, and reactive. You will notice lag in this game much more than a slow paced MMO.

If you like your superhero, SUPER, this is a game you should enjoy. I played COH/COV for over 4 years and finally quit due to end game content. Now I have only been playing the open beta for about 12 hours, but it has been fun and reminds me alot of why I originally played COH. Graphics are definately different, but cool, and playability seems great so far. Hopefully they will put out as many issues as the COH guys to keep it expanding.

Very fun game to play. You don't need a top of the line computer to play the game. All I have is a Asus with a E5300 Pentium Dual CPU. My graphics card is a Asus nVidia 8400 GS, so no, you don't need anything to high priced in your system to play. But if you plan on playing with a wireless connection then make sure you have a good wireless card. Mine is a TRENDnet 300MBps wireless N Adapter, it plays the game pretty good.

The game is not perfect by any means but with the great combination of fun action packed questing and intense customization I don't know who would not give this game a try...

you need a 2.5GHz Single Core or 1.8GHz Dual Core where the site here says only 1.8 GHz. Just to have people be aware.
