    Great Add-on for Non-Smart TVs

Smart TVs are getting more and more feature laden every year. Their internet connected platforms let you you download an ever growing list of streaming apps. But there are still plenty of older TV sets in use. Often, these TVs are in kitchens, guest rooms, home gyms, and sometimes even as the main screen that just happens to work fine. In cases like these, you may not want to shell out money on a new TV but still would like the option to watch Netflix or other streaming service. That’s where the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) is a great solution. It’s an inexpensive way to add streaming to your TV (as well as the ability to cast to your TV from your phone, tablet or computer). This model is the 1080p version (HD) but has almost all the same features as the 4K version of Chromecast, including the remote and ability to play HDR. Besides the higher resolution, the 4K version also supports Dolby Vision which this HD version does not. Of course, since many older sets are not 4K, this HD version will be just fine. The remote really increases ease of use because besides controlling the Chromecast, it can also power on/off your TV and control its volume. This makes life much simpler versus using a TV remote for power/volume and a phone app for the Chromecast. The remote also has a button for Google Assistance so you can speak whatever you’re searching for. The two minor downsides to the remote are 1) it’s small and slippery, and 2) the shortcut buttons to launch YouTube and Netflix can’t be reassigned to other apps. For this, I would knock off a half star. Chromecast with Google TV (HD) is a great way to upgrade an older TV, and makes a good stocking stuffer for the upcoming holidays as well.

    Great for Streaming and More!

The new and improved Chromecast with Google TV HD is a great streaming device! I also use Chromecast to cast PDF sewing patterns with a projector! Upon unboxing, you will find the Chromecast, a remote, a power cable, a power adapter, and 3 AAA batteries. Also included is a free 6-month subscription to Peacock Network (will need a credit card). The setup is pretty easy. I just plugged it into one of the HDMI ports on the back of my smart TV. The setup is faster if you use the Google Home app on your phone, but I set it up through my TV using the remote. The device connected to our home WI-FI without any problems. All of the basic apps are included: YouTubeTV, Sling, Disney+, Prime Video, Netflix, etc. You can also access Google Home and Google Assistant from the remote. To use the Chromecast to cast PDF sewing patterns, first I connect the Chromecast to my bluetooth projector using the HDMI port. I then connect Chromecast to my wireless network. Using my laptop PC, I open the Chrome browser, click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select "cast". I can then open Adobe reader and cast my PDF sewing patterns onto my cutting table. Although I can use the projector with an HDMI cable directly to my laptop, I like using Chromecast instead.

    Great For Older TVs

If you have an older TV or one that is not “smart,” then Google Chromecast is for you. It connects to the internet and provides all the latest apps that provide TV shows, movies or internet connections that may be missing on your TV. For a very reasonable $30, you can get this device that is designed for TVs up to 1080p. Yes. it will play on a 4K TV, but you won’t get the resolution that a 4K TV provides. The good news is that for an extra $20, Chromecast is available for 4K TVs as well with the same functionality. You name it, all the major apps are here: YouTube. Disney+, Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV+ and HBO Max just to name a few. The included remote features YouTube and Netflix buttons so you can go to them directly. The remote has minimal buttons to make navigation easier: Home, Back, Mute. Chromecast even has a search button on the remote to with voice control where you want to go in your search. For example, just say go to “Star Wars” and Chromecast will take to all the Star Wars movies that are available. What could be easier? Installation was a bit problematic. It involved using your smartphone to add Google Home and do some configuration to make it work. Other similar streaming devices make this process not as complicated. Be advised this is only a one-time step. One of the advantages of Google Chromecast is that connects all of your Google devices into the same platform. If you use Google Photos, for example, the photos you select will appear as wallpaper when Chromecast is not active. For $30, you will not find a better way to see all the newest apps out there. You will not have to scrap your TV to add this functionality.

I have a Roku 3, Amazon Fire stick UHD and now this Chromecast. My first impression is how easy it is to set up since my phone is in Android platform, also. To start the set up process, you just need to launch your Google Home app and your phone can scan for the new device that you'd like to add. It keeps all logins info such as Wi-Fi setting to Netflix, Paramount+, YouTube and other accounts. So, it's very convenient. It comes with a remote and 2 AAA batteries, USB C cable long enough to reach power strip from our TV stand. The remote is not as intuitive to use, however it features Google Assistant for voice search. I prefer Amazon Fire Stick remote that looks more sophisticated and intuitive to use. One of the drawback is that it does not support 4K. When you have a big screen like 65+, you can tell the difference in the resolution. I do like the fact that it doesn't favor the Amazon Prime TV and Movies since not all their contents are free. I'm always afraid with the fire stick that my kids inadvertently purchased movies. Overall, I love the fact how simple it is to use and set up. If you don't need a 4K resolution, the chromecast is the one to get!

We appreciate your insights with the new Chromecast with Google TV (HD). We originally wanted to provide a similar experience to the older Chromecast with Google TV (4K) device, but at a lower price point by offering a lower resolution. If you're willing to try, we recommend getting the Chromecast with Google TV (4K) model for the best viewing experience with your 65 inch TV. madebygoogle

    Basic Google TV

The Google Chromecast with Google TV (HD) is a more basic HD only streamer, which competes with the Roku Express and Firestick Lite. What sets the Chromecast apart is the Google TV environment, which builds on the Google strength to collect and aggregate recommendations from among the various services that you subscribe to. The HD device is aimed at the budget buyer or the owner of an older HD television. The device comes in only one color, white; and compared to it's 4K sibling has a slightly lesser processor. The reduced demand of HD service means that it doesn't take a hit on performance and provides you with a very good streaming experience. The remote is compact but offers all the basic features expected of a remote, including the ability to control your TV power and inputs as well as either the TV or a soundbar for volume. Setup was the one thing that caused me to downgrade my rating, I found it a difficult and time consuming process. I had a hard time getting it to connect to wifi.

    Clumsy Chromecast with Google TV

I have helped family and friends purchase and set up at least 15 streaming devices in addition to all my own over the last few years and they were all super simple plug and play. I found this Chromecast with Google TV to be much more complicated. Cute Snow white dongle but it doesn't matter what it looks like since the built in HDMI cord attached is only 3 inches long so it is hidden behind your TV. Unfortunately you have to plug the power cord into the provided power cube since the instructions warn that the TV USB can't power the device like some of my others. I had to do some cord management to make an outlet available for set up. After installing the included AAA batteries in the slick little remote (yes, it is slick and I drop it constantly. It is just under 5 inches long and 1.5 inches wide so smaller than my other streaming remotes) then you have to add the Google Home app on your iPhone or Android just to do the installation. "Follow the steps on your TV and in the app" which kept telling me I was disconnected from the internet and once it said it was connected it did two lengthy updates so "Simple Setup" is now approaching an hour! I thought maybe it had installed my apps but they were just preloads as pictured on the box so I attempted to log in to Netflix first since it is one of the two shortcut buttons on the remote, the other being YouTube. That worked and I was also able to sign in to Apple TV+ and watch "Its the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown". The volume controls on the side of the remote automatically found my TCL TV and worked with no extra steps but only works when using the Google Chromecast. I gave up after this two hour ordeal. Came back to it the next night and logged in to STARZ (which just spins and never opens) and Disney+ and Paramount+ with no trouble until I tried to play a movie. Disney+ immediately gave me an error code to look up if the problem persists and to "try again later". Attempted to play the movie "Prophecy" and it tells me "Sorry, this video is currently unavailable. Please try again." Or I can visit Paramount + (6100). Tried "Tales from the Darkside" with the same result. I was able to play "TFD" on Pluto on demand later. Playing a digital copy of "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" worked after taking a few minutes to load and then the digital copy of "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" took about 4 minutes of spinning before it began to play. Picture quality is surprisingly good for 1080P HDR. Google assistant button on remote tells me "Something went wrong, give it another try" when I hold it and say "Restart movie" but if I press and hold and say "What can you do?" as show in the skimpy little manual I get a YouTube tour of some options before it returns to the paused movie. Instructions are minimal even in online help and support. I haven't given up yet but may just do a factory reset and start over at this point. My first and last Chromecast with Google TV.

    Excellent Intro to Google TV

This is the perfect, low-cost intro to Google TV, much like competing manufacturers' sticks and "express" devices. Really, the name is misleading - this is much more of a dedicated streaming device than Chromecasts of old, with a dedicated OS, included remote (with voice search), and functionality similar to other streaming devices. Output is limited to 1080p, but you can get a step-up model that outputs at 4K for not much more. The key benefit is the streaming interface, which is excellent. All major streaming apps are compatible and available, and the interface is easy and painless to navigate. And you can just use your Google account; no separate account needed. The device isn't as fast as more expensive streaming boxes, but I had no serious problems with lag or reception. Some apps just took a second or two longer to load. I couldn't get the device to reliably receive enough power off of the TV's USB port, but an inexpensive AC adaptor brick attached to the included USB cable quickly fixed the problem. You might have better luck getting power over USB. The device is small and discreet, and hangs out of the way without being a nuisance. Hanging away from the TV is a huge plus; devices that plug directly in to an HDMI port and stick out (pun intended) have overheating and signal receptivity issues. Some distance between the streaming dongle and the TV is a good thing. All in all, highly recommended as either a backup streaming device or a second streamer for your non-main TV. Whether you pick up this one or the 4K upgrade, you won't be disappointed.

We appreciate your feedback about the remote. We understand how frustrating it can be to misplace a small remote. Our team is always looking for ways to improve the user experience, and your suggestion for a bigger, grippier remote is definitely valuable. We'll take this into consideration for future development. In the meantime, you can use your smartphone as a remote for Chromecast with Google TV. Once I got this setup, it's been wonderful. I used a Gen 1 chromecast when they came out initially and didn't like it, but it's been massively improved. It's super convenient to browse and access steaming services, even weirder ones like Criterion Channel. The only issue I had with it was getting it setup. I have other google nest products, but it took mutltiple tries and resets to get this connected despite being next to my router.

The Chromecast with Google TV (HD) - Snow is perfect for home, office, man/woman cave, or for travel. Bring your favorite channels, streaming services, and apps with you no matter where you are. Don't lose a beat by getting stuck watching the limited selections on hotel TVs, just plug in your Chromecast and your can pick up where you left off in your binge watching! I found the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) - Snow to be useful in our RV as well as at the house when we are not traveling. Instead of relying on physical cable hookup, we can connect to Wi-Fi and we are able to enjoy a show or a movie in the comfort of our rig, or outside while bbqing to watch the game. It is great for both travel and at home and is much more compact and portable than their fruity competitor and a far better price. PROS - Google brand, functions, and user experience - Easy to use - plug and play - Connects to your existing Google account for access to all your apps or TV anytime - User friendly functionality CONS - Does short-change on other devices' exclusive programming, but not a deal-breaker!
