Best Traditional Looking Smartwatch Yet!

I was somewhat skeptical of whether I would like the Citizen CZSmart Watch until i received and opened up the packaging. Initially it looked like a traditional analog Citizen watch like I've owned in the past. But once I got out the user manual and read it while charging the watch, I became excited to start playing with it.
After a couple of hours on the charger, I downloaded the Citizen Connected app and began to set up the watch the way I wanted it to appear and the apps connected to it, the notifications I wanted to allow and the items appearing on the dial - steps, temperature, battery life and day of the week. Then I began wearing it.
As I am used to wearing an Apple watch, there were a few things i wished the CZSmart Watch would do differently. While the Citizen watch has a light on the dial that will come on if you tap the dial twice, I am used to just twisting my wrist and having the Apple watch turn on. I also found the CZ watch missing a second hand and only advances the time every 30 seconds or so. Not a biggie but somewhat disconcerting.
The CZSmart Watch is solidly built and I really like its 44mm dial/face. The design is pleasing and the watch band great. The CZ provides notifications based on your customizations when you set up the watch. Emails, messages, fitness aides to get you to move, stand, walk, etc. can be set up using either Apple or Android exercize programs. Music can also be played through bluetooth connected earbuds or headphones using Pandora, Spotify and other apps.
The CZSmart Watch battery is so much better than what i am used to. Citizen says it should be good for 2-4 weeks before needing to be recharged. I am into the watch for my first full week and still show 79% charge remaining. Nice! Compared to having to recharge my Apple watch every night, there is no comparison. Unlkike th CZSmart Watch, the Apple watch is unable to capture any sleep data as it is sitting on the charger overnight. the CZSmart watch comes with a 2 year warranty.

Citizen CZ Smart Watch
The Citizen CZ Smart 44MM Black Stainless Steel Case smartwatch is a good-looking watch. It appears to be built to last a long time.
The watch is an activity tracker and heart monitor in one. Using the watch with out the phone app is cumbersome. You must utilize the three buttons on the side of the case to move from screen to screen. While the screen is touch you can only wake the watch.
Setup is done by the “Citizen Connect” application. Following the on-screen prompts will set up the watch and go over the basic functions. During setup you will be able to change the clock face.
What it is:
This is not a smart watch per say; it is a regular watch with some smart features. This is a sturdy watch that looks good. It is built with the standard high-quality Citizen is known for. The rubber strap is very comfortable. Battery life is two weeks, varies with use.
I would recommend the Citizen CZ Smart 44mm Black IP Stainless Steel Case Hybrid watch to family and friends.

This was purchased as a gift for my husband and he is thrilled! He found out that the software is by Fossil and this watch serves his needs much for efficiently than the Apple Watch that he owned for years. Even better the fitness information from the Citizen app will sync up with Apple fitness.

I never would have believed a functional smart watch could have mechanical hands like a standard time piece, nor did I envision Citizen entering the smartwatch realm. Well, now I can check both on my little checklist, and add to that the fact it works well.
Unboxing this smart watch, you immediately feel the quality of the device. It’s well-built, feels very solid and sturdy. It has a slight heft, giving you confidence in its construction, but it’s not too heavy. The band is tight-fitting but moves very well. It just seems like a durable, well-made timepiece, fitting for an active lifestyle. With all that said, it’s very attractive and gives off the appearance of a normal watch. I really like this about the Citizen – CZ. It doesn’t look like a mini smartphone on my wrist, and that’s a welcome change from the smartwatch norm.
Powering up the watch and getting it synced with my phone wasn’t too difficult, but I did run into a little bit trouble. The Citizen connected app guides you through the process, and it is pretty straight forward. I think I just had a bit of a connection hiccup on the initial try. After that, smooth as butter. The app offers the user the standard set of smartwatch data – steps, active time, calories burned, heart rate data, sleep stats, move alerts. It also allows notification and alert settings to be changed, watch face customization (limited to design), and participation in the Citizen Connect Challenge. There is also auto activity detection. The app functions well and serves as a capable companion to the watch. The 2 biggest issues I had with the app/service are: auto workout detection is somewhat limited from a settings perspective, and the only connected app capability offered is with Google Fit. In auto workout detection, the time parameters are not editable, and in some cases feel too high (too long to determine activity – cycling for 10 min with movement and elevated heartrate seems too long). Also, I would love to see just an exercise option. Where I might be doing a more stationary or in place activity and my heartrate elevates in the aerobic zones. As for the connected app options, I would love to just see more fitness service options.
As for the watch itself, it’s a cool device. The face is pleasant to the eye, and there are some neat little motion tricks to help with visibility. Since there are physical arms on the watch face, they can sometimes get in the way of data. A quick flick of the wrist causes the arms to do a quick spin allowing you to see the entire screen. When you are viewing notifications, the arms lock at the 9 and 3 (or 54 and 15) positions on the watch face. Citizen has designed the screen to display all data above and below this line for easy viewing. Overall, I really like this design. It’s well thought-out and executed. The screen has a somewhat mono-chromatic look and feel. I only had trouble seeing things in direct or heavy sunlight. A good glare can really interfere with the color of the lettering. The screen isn’t backlit, so it uses an old-school face light to illuminate the display. This is an area where what the CZ has works but could be much better. The lighting appears to come from 4 designated corners on the watch face. It would be so much better if the entire ring surrounding the face was lit, especially when viewing notifications or messages. Speaking of notifications and messages, I found this watch to be pretty solid in the “smart” department. It seamlessly re-connected anytime I put distance between me and my phone, and it was very consistent in notifying me without delay. I could read text messages, respond to them with up to 3 responses set in the app, and clear them. There’s only one thing that would make this better… the navigation of the interface. There are 3 buttons on the left side of the watch, all of which are physical buttons. The center primarily serves as the action button, while the top and bottom primarily serve as movement – up and down. Not going to lie, it took a little time to get used to navigating the watch using buttons and not a touch screen – touch screens have spoiled us. Even once I got the hang of it, I didn’t like using the interface when receiving multiple notifications. One addition would have solved this problem: a wheel or dial for the middle button. That would make scrolling so much more efficient, and free up the 2 other buttons for other things. As for fitness, the CZ works well, but my experience wasn’t as expected because I have grown accustomed to other fitness brands. Some count all activity in the form of steps, others look at time active. This is somewhere in between, and the auto workout detection doesn’t offer enough flexibility to capture my activity without a lot of my attention. There is a setting to remove user acknowledgement of an activity, but in my experience, my other fitness tracker captures my day along with activities more accurately. The thing is, maybe I think it does, and the CZ is more accurate.
Overall, this is a very good smartwatch that’s easy to recommend, but I came away wanting more from it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s well thought out and definitely fits the bill of what I would call a “smart timepiece”. The Citizen CZ fits what I really want, and it’s right there… It’s a 5 star deal with a couple of 3 star moments.

Quality Smart Watch Alternative

I'm 'in love' with this Citizen Hybrid Smart Watch! It's simply beautiful to behold.
The look of this watch is impressive, and reminds me of more expensive brands. Classy, yet able to be worn everyday.
Although I've owned other smart watches, I'm really loving everything about this Citizen watch, especially it's larger size. It's a definite statement "piece." And the forest green silicone watch band is very, very nice. Tapered and textured, noticably different from those 'other' silicone bands. You can feel the quality.
And even though it IS larger than my current smart watch, which I wear everyday, so far I'm finding this Citizen Hybrid Smart Watch to be quite comfortable. Hefty but in no way heavy on the wrist.
You will need to install the Citizen Connected app on your smart phone. This enables you to 'connect' the smart watch to your mobile device, and in the app you will do all the customizations for the watch itself. Including, setting the side buttons' control options. This was actually quite fun!
And it is a legitimate Smart Watch. The basics are there - time, date, calendar and weather; along with features you find on other smart watches - activated app notifications, incoming phone calls and messages, battery life indicator, steps tracker, heart rate, sleep monitor, as well as, the ability to set a 'move alert', daily goals, and even connect to your fitness apps. You can also customize the smart watch dial display with your favorite photo, or use one of the default faces from the Citizen app's gallery.
The claimed 15-day battery life is something I'll just have to 'wait and see' at this point. But I will say that it is a pleasant change to no longer have to make do with wearing my smart watch during day, only to need to put it on the charger at night while I sleep so it'll be ready to go in the morning; thereby making the sleep features nearly useless for me. So far I've not needed to charge it once, except for the initial set-up.
If you are not a 'fan' of those other well-known smart watches, or just looking for something nice but different, then this Citizen Hybrid Smart Watch may be worth considering. I'm definitely sold on it. It's not often I'm this confident when recommending a product. And the price is more than fair for the absolute exceptional quality of this "smart" timepiece.

Look no further than the YF20 Citizen CZ Smart Watch to complement your outfit and your lifestyle. With a fully customizable face, stainless steel case, and long-lasting battery life, this watch is less an accessory and more a centerpiece to your desired look.
The YF20 comes nicely packaged with only a charger and very simple startup instructions. Most functions are controlled through the free Citizen Connected app where you will pair and register your watch. Here you can check your steps, calories burned, and other health statistics, as well personalize your watch face with different profiles such as daily, fitness, or travel. This will also let you program the side button functions to your liking. The app does its job fine, but it is very bare-boned and I was hoping for a little bit more. I do like that it can connect to your Google Fit profile so you can integrate your information without starting from scratch.
The watch face is big and weighty which offsets the somewhat disappointing rubber strap. I prefer a leather or metal strap as I've had plenty of issues with wear and literal tear of rubber ones, though I will admit this strap does feel pretty sturdy and I understand its benefits for an active person. It is very comfortable and sits snuggly on the wrist while allowing for the heart rate monitor to function admirably. It looks great with the mechanical watch hands over the digital background. I appreciate the wrist-flick that spins the hands to allow easy visibility of the background when required. Finally, the battery lasts a long time compared to other smart watches in the same market. One less thing to worry about, one more thing to love.
Overall, the Citizen YF20 CZ Smart Watch is an impressive accessory highlighted by its reliability and aesthetics. While there is some room for improvement on the app side of things, the watch itself is like the love-child of art and technology for your wrist. An easy recommendation.
Full disclosure, I received this product for my honest, unbiased review.

I was very excited to try this watch out. My last smart watch just died a few months ago and I’ve really been missing the convenience of a smart watch on my wrist… but I’ve also enjoyed wearing my classic watches that I’ve been neglecting all these years. This watch solves that. It’s really beautiful, and no one would know it’s a smart watch at first glance. I have several Citizen watches and appreciate every one. This watch provides me notifications that I need, but none I don’t. The fitness tracker and heart rate monitor work very well and seem to be calibrated correctly. The best part was I had this watch on my wrist about 10 minutes after taking it out of the box. Plugged it in, downloaded the app and bam… it’s working perfectly. Coming from my last smart watch, this was an upgrade! I love the way it looks, and even though I’m still getting used to using the buttons to navigate the menus (it’s not a touchscreen) I have been wearing this every day. This will be something that I use for a long time!

This Citizen YF20 watch is definitely targeted to those into physical fitness. The number of ways you can tailor its display, and the number of different workout regimens you can set up and monitor using the app, are almost unlimited.
First off, set up was easy. The watch came out of the box with about 80% charge, so while the included, very short “setup guide” says to charge it before pairing it with your phone, this was not necessary in my case. You are instructed to download the app to your phone and run it to set up the watch, and this was performed without incident. The watch then sets itself to the correct time based on what the phone tells it. The charger cable, by the way, has a small disk at one end that magnetically attaches to the back of the watch while the other end is a standard USB-2 port to be connected to a computer or a standard USB charger. The watcj does not come with a charger, only the cable.
Available are both several pre-configured watch dials, each with different types or placement of various monitors, such as the date, heart rate, total steps, calories burned, and so forth, as well as, as noted above, customizable watch faces, so you can have the dial display exactly what you want to see. You can also change the display in such ways as displaying or not displaying dial numerals.
I have the black version of the watch, and it is very attractive with a comfortable, rubber strap. There are three buttons on the watch to allow you to access various bits of information depending on how you push the buttons.
Now lets get to a few things I kind of wonder about the utility of. The watch can be set to vibrate when you receive a phone call, and this can be tailored to notify only if certain numbers are calling of if anyone is calling. It also notifies you when a text is received, although you can’t read the entire text because there is no way (that I could find) to scroll the text. The watch can also control the music played by your phone.
Looking at the above paragraph, I say to myself, “why?” Keep in mind that, in order to communicate with your phone to give you these notifications and music control, the watch must be within bluetooth distance of the phone. For most of us, we would have the watch on our wrist and the phone perhaps in our pocket or purse. How much value is there in having the phone vibrate when a call or text or comes in when the phone in your pocket does the same thing? How useful is to be able to control the audio playback on your phone if you can also control it from the phone itself, which you have probably been doing since you’ve had a smartphone and have been listening to music on it. All of this seems to be more of solutions in search of problems than they are addressing real needs.
Yes, by all means, pair your phone and use it to set up exercise regimens, vital statistics monitoring, and all the rest that a watch is uniquely able to do. For these reasons, you definitely want the app on your phone. But otherwise, the phone call and text alerting seems mostly there just because it can be done.
As far as time between battery recharges, that’s hard to say after having had the watch for only a little over a week. It’s been about a week since the last recharge, and the battery life indicator says 85%. Given that I probably wouldn’t want to run it down too low, I’m guessing now that one can get about four to six weeks between charges.
During this week I also took a trip by plane to a destination two time zones away, and I was curious to see how the watch would handle the time change. Remember that there’s no way (that I have found) to adjust the time simply by turning a dial on the watch, something we’ve been doing with traditional watches since the beginning of time (ha ha). My usual approach is to set my watch to the time at my destination once the plane takes off. I can’t do that now. I have to wait until we’ve landed, my phone has adjusted to the local time, and then let my watch re-pair with my phone to update the time shown on the watch. It all worked without a problem, and it’s just something new to get used to.
I rate the watch highly because it tells time accurately (the primary function of a watch, right?), it is easy to set up and use, and it is quite attractive and comfortable. It has more features than I’m likely to ever use, but I use enough of them to make purchase and ownership well worthwhile.

This watch is your classic Citizen watch that looks great, feels great and has a classic design. The Hybrid aspect turns it into something that is suitable to wear to a wedding or more formal function without having a lit up smartwatch on your arm, but still having the ability to access emails, texts and other important things on the sly.
The screen is black and white, so don't expect anything mind blowing or anything apple watch-esque. This is more of a muted design, one that the average eye wouldn't be able to pick up on. I do think the UI feels outdated and passed by but I wonder if that is to keep such a long battery life. The light feels like the old indiglo lighting from the 90s where it's just barely lit up enough to see the screen. When a message is recieved the hands move to 3 and 9 so you are able to read the screen. Once your finished reading the screen they go back to normal time. Very cool. You can also customize quite a few things from background to what the dials do when you press them.
I had several issues with the watch that kept me from giving it 5 stars. The previously mentioned older technology incorporated in the watch being the first and most obvious. Also, the tracking seemed quite a bit off compared to my apple watch. I wore both while counting steps, walking, heart rate etc. They were all off by quite a bit when compared to each other. I also wish there was an on/off feature for this watch. Apparently there isn't. There's also no speaker or mic if you want to use talk to text or listen to anything. Again, this isn't an apple watch or even a true smart watch so maybe I'm asking too much.
The watch looks and feels great it has a nice heavy weight to it. Feels good on the arm. But if your looking for a watch with all the smart bells and whistles, this isn't the watch for you. If you're looking for a sleek classic watch to put on with a suit that still allows you to access your "digital life" this one is for you.

A watch first and a smartwatch second

It's important to understand that this is a watch first and a smartwatch second. A rather large and sturdy frame with physical hands, this watch is a bit of a beast.
The "smart" side of the watch is an e-ink screen, which means the battery drain is much MUCH slower than traditional smartwatches; but that also means the screen refresh is slower too. Generally speaking, I didn't have much problem with that, although in dark areas you have to activate the backlighting to see the content - and I wasn't too pleased with those results, since it's really 4 little lights in the four corners of the watch face. It really comes off as an afterthought.
The indicators for the e-ink screen are configurable, with some additional layout options you can use. Connection to a phone (through a companion app) was simple enough.
Finally, reading messages or even controlling playback on your phone remotely worked, but it's not what I would consider the most efficient experience. Then again, as I mentioned in the beginning, this is a watch first and a smartwatch second.

If you are a fan of good ol' analog dial watch with mechanical hands and still need some tech capability then you might be interested in picking up Citizen's hybrid watch. However the tech side is where this watch falls short in my opinion. If you are used to a smart watch like a Fitbit or Apple Watch or the scores of others then this watch will disappoint you. Yes, it does have smart features but I think they fall short on execution.
First of all I will say it's a gorgeous watch. It sports a stylish case with a chrono look. The rubber watchband is a good match giving it a very nice sporty look. The companion smartphone app give you the ability to customize the watch face to suit your info needs and style preference however it appears that the face graphics are somewhat limited and I haven't seen 3rd party faces like other smartwatches have. You can however move some of the info segments to locations to suit your taste or info focus such as steps, workout info, heartbeats, etc. The monochrome display is crisp and very easy to read if not in a low light environment.
Battery life is amazing due to the type of display used. In daylight or any light the face is easy to read however the size of fonts can be a bit of a challenge especially for notifications. There are a few features "quirks" that are a compromise to make this a hybrid offering. Holding down the center button or a quick flick of the wrist will swing the watch hands to horizontal position allowing easier reading of notifications.
In the box you get a standard USB type A cable with a chargind pod on the other end. No charging adapter is provided so be prepared to plug it into your laptop, desktop, or other charging adapters. I ended up purchasing a multi-port charging station to keep my devices charged since most phones these days don't come with a charger either. The quick start manual is just that. There are no real details so I ended up going on Citizen's website to watch "how-to" videos on how to adjust settings.
My problem with the execution of the design causes me major issues. First and foremost the watch has zero illumination ability. The monochromatic display may be great for extending battery life however if you are in a low light environment when you get a notification on your watch you will end up pulling out your phone because you will not be able to read them on the watch. Secondly, a touch screen would be helpful in navigating. The 3 buttons take a bit getting used to to properly navigate messages, settings, etc.
Just be mindful of these limitations or design features when you select this watch.

A stealth smartwatch!

When looking for an elegant automatic timepiece, but also want the functionality and versatility of a smartwatch, your options are quite few and hardly affordable. When looking for such a timepiece, you desire a timeless design which some models offer at the cost of having ambiguous functions or relying heavily on the phone app, while others offer today's cutting edge technology only to have it become obsolete in short order.
The Citizen CZ Smart Hybrid offers the best of both worlds, combining the elegance of a finely tuned Swiss sport watch with most of the needs of a smartwatch. It's timeless design embeds a 1 inch diameter e-ink display that consumes no battery power at rest allowing the reserves to last up to 2 weeks before needing a brief charge. It's been nearly a week of playing with it's features and brandishing it's abilities and the battery is surprisingly still at 63%!
I don't really miss the nice color display of my old smartwatch nor the nightly charging of which I would forget about more often than not. The e-ink display has clear, well-defined characters and catches the light like reading a newspaper. Though in less-than-ideal direct lighting, I find myself squinting to read the notifications. It has side lighting at 4 areas that I'd discovered purely by accident; while at the theater, I was clapping after a scene and noticed light from the watch by the corner of my eye. I had no idea how it happened, but realized the clapping caused it after initially thinking it had an ambient light sensor. If you tap the watch twice, lights go on for about 20 seconds. I got it down to flicking my fingers twice quickly to enable it.
It has all the bells and whistles a good smartwatch should have; notifications, strong vibration, heart rate monitor, workouts, calories, steps, incoming calls, customizable faces, stopwatch, weather, etc. It adds all this in such an unassuming way that those around you would think you're wearing an old school, "dumb watch" as opposed to smart, which is one comment my father said. How surprised they become when you hit a side button and the hands spin flat to 9:15 showing a less obstructed view of the screen.
I think the most difficult thing for me switching from a full smartwatch is the ability to view pictures and respond to text messages when my phone is inaccessible or far away. BTW, there's no Wifi built-in so once you're more than 20ft away, you lose BT connection. For good functionality, the center button should've been a scroll wheel, quite tedious to scroll with top and bottom button. Lack of available touch screen is not a big issue. Backlighting would've been preferred, side-lighting doesn't present the screen very legibly. The lume on the hand tips and around the dial require ample lighting to charge up, not conducive of being hidden under the sleeve. I'm not a fan of the rubberized strap, it feels either too constricting or just loose enough to go off center and not easy to just flick back with the wrist.
An attractive, elegant watch that's a hybrid smartwatch. Being aware of it's abilities as a real watch with real hands that happens to have a lot of features, is what should be considered when looking to get it. If you want a full smartwatch, Citizen offers one. I really like it now that I've had the chance to wear it for a while. Granted, I'm used to a full smartwatch with a metal band, but I'm definitely keeping this as the dressy watch for going out!

This hybrid smartwatch is a legit alternative to the current "normal" smartwatches. I had one such device from a "good" company, and while it had many apps/could do more, it had maybe a day and a half of battery life. This watch had about 80% when I first pulled it out of the box, but the kicker was 4 days of heavy use, it was only down to 28%. From what I can tell you could easily get 7+ days of heavier use, even more with less use. The fitness stuff seems to work well, but I really like the sleep tracking personally. (With the long battery life it's actually useful without needing to charge at night)
One big plus that I couldn't find online was that it has a nightlight feature to assist seeing the time or e-ink display.

Coming from a full fledged smart watch to the CZ smart, I had a feeling that I’d miss some of the functionality of my old watch and I was right for the most part. The CZ is a fairly unique smart watch that uses an e ink display, similar to ereaders. The watch focuses mostly on displaying notifications and tracking health stats.
The look of the watch is great. It’s built out of stainless steel and looks awesome on the wrist. It is big, so if you have a small wrist be careful.
The battery life is crazy, 18 days on a smart watch is way different than having to charge everyday. This is one thing I’ve really loved about this watch. I didn’t realize how much I’d like just being about to take the watch off at night and not worry about a charger.
Using the watch is fairly straightforward. You navigate through messages and menus using the three buttons on the side. It’s fairly easy, though much slower than I’m used to on my previous watch. The health tracker works pretty well and syncs in the background to both google fit and Apple health so you’ll get all your fitness stats on your phone.
Using the watch at night was my biggest problem. The watch has a light that will come in if you tap the case, but I had so much trouble getting it to come on consistently that I just gave up.
Overall if you specifically want a watch that isn’t too over the top and want something that will show notifications withought having to constantly worry about charging or you just want something that looks like a classic watch, this might be a good fit.

Let me start by saying did the look of this watch is high end. I really like how you can change the the face of the watch and integrated with your phone. I also enjoy the app which shows my sleeping patterns, my heart beat per minute, and how many steps I take a day. I'm also glad I could see all of my alerts on my phone, including text and phone calls. Coming from my last smartwatch, the issue I'm having is it implicitly of the controls. The last watch a hair was a lot easier to use, and the program for the basic person.I have problems with this watch with the band of the watch getting caught on Random things throughout the day. Maybe is the thickness of the band, but it happens a lot. Other than that, I really enjoy this watch and would definitely recommend it!
