I’m a huge fan of citizens watches so I was overly ecstatic to run across an actual citizen smart watch. Without hesitation I ordered the watch and eagerly awaited its arrival.
The packaging was nice like all citizen packaging is and the watch looked amazing resting in the box.. As soon as I picked it up out of the box it felt cheap. Almost plastic feeling like cheap metal.. Not the kind of quality that comes with owning a citizen watch..
At this point I figured the performance and user experience has to be amazing to make up for the cheap feel of the watch itself.. sadly the thing doesn’t respond well at all. Had to constantly tap and twist and flinch my wrist to even get it to display..
thankfully bestbuy is awesome for returns.. disappointed citizen put their name on this product..

Fantastic hardware, but might just be the worst piece of software I have ever used. Will not connect to the phone half the time after three factory resets. I am optimistic that it will work better on android but it is atrocious on iOS. Props to citizen for making great hardware though.

This is not my first smartwatch and probably not my last. However stepping away from the smartwatch world for about 3 years, I thought would have this type of technology be somewhat more polished than I remember it. I stopped using Android OS right before it was renamed. I then opted for the Galaxy devices. Don't get me wrong, the current Wear OS is nicer than it was. It is way user friendly, but it still lacks polish in my opinion. As for the hardware aspect this also disappointed me. This watch for the price is using a chip that is almost 2 years old. What does that mean? Well for one, there is an upgraded chip and with that chip you get a more powerful boost across the board. Why am I focusing on the chip or processor and why does it matter if it's a little old or not? Well because of it, the watch continues to fail to me in one area. The battery life. In my uses, with tilt to wake off, using the daily setting, I can only get a day usage. By the time I get home from work, my battery is about the low 40 percentile and when the watch hits 30 percent, the watch will ask you if you want to go into one of the power saving modes. This really disappointed me. I had notifications all day, I did not use it for navigation or calls. And this only gave me a day of use. Not a recommend for me. Don't get me wrong, I love Citizen as a brand, but this has the same insides as a Fossil. A year and a half old Fossil. How do I know this? The charger is the same exact one used. Citizen bought Fossil a few years ago and I the outsides do scream the watch brand, with crown guards and remappable pushers, but there is nothing here to me that merits the price tag. You are literally paying for the name here. You do not get what you pay for.
With the above gripes, I have to say the usage when I have power works great and connects without issues between wifi and bluetooth. The functionality of the software with the current Wear OS (yes I updated the OS twice since I got it) is pretty smooth. You can set up google pay, use the watch as a media controller, and of course the heart rate monitor is always nice to have. However, with all these features, you need a processor that can do all these things and last more than 14 hours of moderate to heavy use. Yes you can choose the different modes to save on battery life, but current tech out there, this can do better. For one, there is no wireless charging like older smartwatch has. Why would I love this feature? Simple, for one, because of the short battery life, I can opt to charge the watch up at work when I am sitting on my desk and simply take it when I need to go elsewhere. It would have been a great feature to have. So if you are looking for a smartwatch and if you are looking for your first smartwatch, I would not recommend this for current MSRP. Like stated, you are looking to pay for the name at this point in this model. I hope they were just testing the waters and playing it safe for the next iteration...I can hope.
I love Citizen as a brand. Heck I was wearing a Citizen for my wedding and it was a great watch. I still have that watch. But for this, it's an old tech out of the box for me, even for one like me that has been out of the smartwatch world for a few years.

Ive owned a Tizen based smartwatch for a few years and thought it was time to see what else is on the market. I tried this Citizen smartwatch based on Wear OS off and on for the past 2 weeks. I might not be super detailed but I will try to hit all the major points. First, the look. This is a very nice looking watch. At 46mm the screen is large and beautiful. It is also a responsive screen and notifications and alerts come through almost instantaneously. However, the ability to customize the screen is much more difficult than my previous watch. When I am able to get it to work, the new watch face is nice and clear, graphics are on point. But, the ability (or lack thereof) to customize the screen easily, is a turn off. The watch itself is also very nice and pleasing to look at and the one watch band fits nicely and snug. Moving around the tutorial was also a pain because it almost made you accept and acknowledge things that I didn't want to engage and I wasn't able to find a way to skip the tutorial. Not a deal breaker, just frustrating. Notifications and weather updates worked great. Taking phone calls on the watch was also a good experience. One other thing that I wish I could disable was the watch making an audible chime when I received a text or email. I found how to silence everything but not just the chime so that the watch only vibrated. Again, not a deal breaker, just a personal choice. Third, Battery life was not 24 hours as described. I found the watch would make it through the daylight hours but always needed to be charged over night or the next morning. A huge annoyance was charging the watch. You need to provide your own butt end for the USB-A style charging. While the connection worked well and charging took a few hours, the watch always turned on and would pair with your phone, whether you wanted it to or not. I found disconnecting the watch did not work and I finally had to unpair it. This cause me to have to go through the entire setup process again which really frustrated me to the point I might not ever use this watch again. I prefer to set things up once, have complete control over the product and it work flawlessly. Bootup was slow. Voice commands worked pretty good, but overall, I did not come out super impressed with this watch. It looks great (I have the blue version) works well for the most simplistic tasks but the charging/connection issue and lack of customization are a deal breaker for me.

I’ll write this review from a standpoint of someone who has never had a smartwatch before, because this Citizen CZ is my first.
Using the Citizen app, it synced with my phone easily and I was on my way.
What I liked about this watch is the way it looks like a classy analog timepiece, not a plastic digital gizmo.
First, it’s REALLY cool to get a message or a phone call from someone and not have to fumble for your phone to see who it is. Just a glance at your wrist and you can read most of an incoming short message or see who’s calling you and answer or ignore the call from just a touch of the watch’s face. You can use the watch as a speakerphone, the caller’s volume is plenty loud enough for a quiet environment and my callers say they hear me clearly as well. If you want to talk privately, just pick up your phone and you can easily transfer the call to your phone for privacy.
The free Citizen phone app available for Android or iPhone offers many ways to customize the watch. You can easily change watch faces, keep your watch face on all the time or turn off when not in use to save battery. You can use a flick of your wrist to turn on the watch if you like. The app will tell you the battery level at any time. If you want to have the watch on all the time as I do, then you’ll probably need to recharge the watch every night, just as you do with a smartphone. I certainly was not used to charging a watch every night, but it’s an easy thing to include in your daily routine. The watch does charge quickly though, It went from about 20 percent to 100 percent in about 40 minutes, so if you need a ‘fill-up’ during a long day it should be easy.
The watch has many apps included, you can easily rotate the watch crown to see and select them. The Play Store Is one of the apps where you can see many more applications for your watch which uses the Google “Wear OS.”
The buttons on either side of the watch crown can be customized to select two of the apps you use most.
The watch has a stainless steel body and a Gorilla Glass face for durability so it should keep its good looks for a long time.
As far as negatives are concerned, I see that this watch uses a Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor which was released in 2018. A 4100 processor is now available but not on this watch. The 4100 would give the watch ‘faster processing power’ which I don’t need, but the newer processor’s 25% less power consumption would have been something I’d really like.
As a person new to the smartphone world, I found it more difficult to learn how to use all this phone’s great features than someone more experienced with smartphones. In the old days, it would have come with a manual detailing instruction on all its included apps. Now you’re left on your own using Google.
Finally the price of the watch. You can purchase a smartwatch with similar features for a few hundred dollars less, but it won’t have the appearance of this Citizen.
Bottom line, as a new smartphone user I’m happy with my Citizen CZ. It’s sharp looking and I don’t feel like a klutz when my phone rings and now I don’t look like a novice juggler with my arms flaying just to answer it.

Cool Device for Large Wrist

I have previously worn a variety of Fitbit trackers and a Withings device (the only still functioning device), but this is the first Wear OS powered device that I have owned. It is more like a wrist worn smartphone than like a fitness tracker and the setup is therefore a little more complex but straightforward nonetheless. It is also quite large on my wrist - enough so that it hits or catches on stuff a smaller device would not. The flexible plastic band may easily attached/detached from the watch but I did not find it to be very comfortable - that could partially be due to the weight and size of the watch itself. This smartwatch performs the stated functions but I found the step count to be around 20% to 30% high at times. I am accustomed to viewing my sleep details on my Android smartphone; however, with this device you can only do that on the watch which does not provide any method to edit the sleep data. Sleep duration data will bridge over to the Google Fit app on your phone, but there is no edit method for that data either. I found swiping the screen an easy way to learn in order to view all of the watch's features. After my first foray outdoors, I discovered that even if adaptive brightness is enabled, extra display brightness must also be enabled in order to read the display in bright sunlight. Selecting extended battery management will help a charge last about 1.5 to 2 days while still providing most watch features. The only way to get longer battery life is to select Time Only setting but that disables most watch features.
So this smartwatch is ruggedly attractive, durable, and well made. It provides almost all of the health functions and smart watch functions that you could want. It could profit from a longer battery life - say a week. I've become accustomed to charging my phone daily but I still have higher expectations from a smartwatch. The flexible synthetic wristband could be more comfortable but perhaps I will eventually become accustomed to it.
