Don't miss this " Cleopatra!"
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you're an Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton fan, you'll love this, because this shows them in love right before your eyes. Moreover, they can act. Rex Harrison, as "Caesar," is brilliant. The score composed by Alex North, is simply gorgeous and also enhances the battle scenes. Please don't go by the initial critics. The film is lavish and fun to watch. Cleopatra's entrance into Rome is one of the most outstanding sequences on film! Roddy McDowell is also outstanding!

An epic classic with an all-star cast
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. What a babe. It’s no wonder Dick Burton married her multiple times. She is one of the most beautiful women to ever grace the silver screen. This “Cleopatra” is both epic and a classic…with Taylor, Burton and Harrison leading an all-star cast. Mr. Burton…I envy you.

Grandiose Hollywood Treatment of History
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Joseph L. Mankiewicz's "Cleopatra" was a massive box-office failure when it was released. It is a typical embodiment of Hollywood, at that time, producing grand-scale, grandiose "historical epics" that white-washed so many of the stories it portrayed -- i.e. biblical movies, this film, et al. Caucasian actors speaking with American and British accents playing Middle Eastern, Egyptian, and so on characters. It seems pretty silly. But darn it, the movies are all so ENTERTAINING. "Cleopatra" is certainly no exception. It's epic, visually stunning, brilliantly designed entertainment. And Liz is her usual commanding self as the queen. The role was tailor-made for her. And the movie is certainly very, very long -- a major test of patience for anyone with short attention spans or who gets fidgety easily. But it's just such an excellent movie.

Excellent Remaster of the 1963 Epic Film
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This presentation shows how spectacular a mid-20th-century film can be, made with a near studio-killing budget then fully remastered with 21st century technology. Compared to the Netflix stream I'd seen a month ago, I found the blu-ray disc presentation was just a little bit cleaner in video quality, much better in audio quality. The script can be a bit plodding at times and the acting a bit heavy handed, but this is a visual masterpiece, especially when you consider that, in the days before video capture and computer-generated imagery, everything you see was built by human hands. This excellent remaster preserves the film-like quality of the 1963 original, enhanced with crystal clear images and rich colors. The golden costume accessories, props and set elements really gleam, especially with a little extra contrast adjustment on your TV. Beautiful.

Ultimate way to view this epic
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The ultimate viewing experience for this most expensive film in relative dollars ever made.....brilliant use of Todd AO sound and De Luxe saturated color... This version brings out the detail(s) in everything...including Elizabeth Taylor's beyond gorgeous costumes...the incredible Alex North score....the never to be duplicated again original sets....and tons of Blu Ray extras on both discs....

Cleo, BABY!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It's interesting to note that when Cleopatra's sarcophagus was found - hieroglyphics were still a mystery. So, some Bozo thought "What a cool box, Dude!" and emptied its contents down a sewer. Later (too late) it was discovered that the Bozo flushed Cleopatra! This motion picture was one I saw as a boy and I was mesmerized by how huge, yet personal, it's effect was on me. We could talk about it's place in Cinematic History, or Elizabeth Taylor (or her purple eyes) and Richard Burton, but to what avail? In the end ANY film's worth is measured simply by it's effect on the individual. So, is this beautiful 2-Disc, 50th Anniversary Edition worth the pittance asked? DUH!

A Classy Epic
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This restoration on Blu-ray is magnificent. The photography, costumes, amd sets have never looked better. The many extras about the making of this troubled, overbudgeted epic. are worth every penny. BestBuy has the best price anywhere. A must for those who like to hear great actors like Burton and Harrison speaking intelligent dialogue. The rest of the cast is very good including Taylor who holds her own against these stage trained actors.

A cast of thousands, real not computer generated
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Probably the most epic of costumers from the past, "CLEOPATRA" cost a fortune but the sets are magnificent. This movie demands to be seen in BluRay format. One always wonders how much of the storylines in historical movies are based on real life, and how much has been created to give more depth to the characters. If it's this enjoyable to the eyes, who cares. The lines are sometimes stilted, artificial if you will, but the acting is still pretty good. A few of Cleo's outfits were risque for the 60's, and leave little to the imagination.

Great movie Looks great!
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This movie is great and looks great. The one set back is that they don't show Mark Antony's funeral speech to Julius Caesar. A missed opportunity. The audio and visuals are stunning that an old movie like this could look and sound so good. In some cases better looking than some modern retelling of this story. Its too bad than some deleted scenes were lost by fox studio.

Epic Blu ray
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you want to see a movie that was big budget (even bigger than Ben Hur), and see sets built to awe the audiences (no CGI here), then this movie is for you. No expense was spared when making this movie, at least until the end. And don't worry, it still has a good ending. The accompanying disc that details the making of the movie is as good as the movie itself. I bought the Digi-book edition because I like the way they can sit on a table and look like a small hardback book.

Cleopatra Blu is Gold
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Finally, Fox brings back the original running time in all its glory. On the plus side; lush cinematography that is exemplified by the Blu-ray presentation. Costumes and set design are amazing for its day. And, the sound is rich with a wonderful theatrical quality. The down side; it nearly borders on the boring after Rex Harrison makes his exit. But this cinematic spectacle is about as large as they get and an interesting showcase in film history. Every dollar is there on the screen, but one cannot help but wonder if it was used properly and to its full effect. Well worth watching and a must for lovers of film classics.

Filmmaking at it’s finest, a must see!
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was one of the most expensive films to make at it’s time. It was way over budget. They wanted the most spectacular and realistic scenes to ever hit the theater. All filming, costumes and thousands of actors made this happen. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton are glorious in this film. They both fell in love during filming and eventually married.

Classic movie
||Posted . Owned for more than 2 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great moive released in blu-ray. This is the first time I watched this movie. Although it was made several decades ago, the movie looks amazing. The packaging is still good, although it is not a collector edition, thus there is no additional booklet or perks included. Highly recommend if you have not watched it.

A film classic that looks amazing
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This 1963 film looks like nothing since. REAL HUGE sets. TONS of extras. A love story set in the historical period of 49 BC. Ceasar is on his quest to become like Alexander the Great and has a love affair with Queen Cleopatra of Egypt. The restoration is amazing and sound is great.
