Being an avid athlete in the last 15 years, I've been healthy and fortunate enough to participate in marathons, obstacle races, and fitness competitions. I was extremely excited to try out Compex's compression boot offerings. While it's unlikely that anyone can scientifically provide hard proof that compression therapy devices, such as compression boots, lead to faster recovery, research has shown that compression and massages do improve blood flow and increase oxygen to your muscles. This is supposed to aid in removing lactic acid and prevent the dreaded sore muscle feeling. Theory is great, but until I can try such a bold claim for myself I'm not entirely sold. I decided to focus my workouts on leg exercises upon putting this product to the test. I put together a small custom leg regiment involving resistance training. I worked out my legs three times a week. I added a minimum of a 1 mile run after every leg workout. Each one of the three workouts focused on either volume, intensity, or frequency. My goal was to compare the recovery during an intense week of leg exercises while using these compression boots as opposed to my usual one to two day a week leg workout routine with normal intensity. These things are miracle workers....However, I do believe it has a lot do with how frequently I used them. I used them immediately after every workout, a couple of hours after my workout while watching TV, and once before bed. I also used it in the morning a couple of times before work. I still had some soreness but for the volume and intensity that I trained my legs at, it was really impressive how short lived it was. The slight soreness only lasted about a day as opposed to several days when I've trained my legs at slightly above my normal intensity. The product is extremely easy to use. You simply slip them onto each leg and press the power button on each of the control units. The default setting is likely fine for most but I enjoy a tighter compression. You can increase each compression chamber on every boot (there are 4 on every boot). 90 was the perfect level for me (goes upto 120) . I would recommend increasing by 10 and trying every incremental step up to make sure youre not going too tight. That's pretty much it. It's a very simple no frills compression therapy device that will certainly speed your recovery. Conversely, it's over simplistic offering is what made me deduct a star. I would really have loved to pair these compression boots with an app. It would have been great to be able to select between different therapy modes in an application. One of the big features I think these boots are missing are a massage feature. While these boots accomplish their one main task of compressing your muscles very well, sometimes you want to indulge in more of a massage than solely a "constrict and release" function. My only last other gripe is I wish the boots were a tad longer so they could really envelop my upper quads. Overall, these are fantastic recovery compression boots especially for the price. Their only competition is about twice the cost. These boots also came in a very high quality storage case. They are extremely portable. Definitely more so than their competition as they also dont have a massive control unit and plugs. This is definitely a product you have to try for yourself and not rely sole on other's results since everyone's physiological composition differs. Compex has been around a LONG time in the fitness game and I trust these will serve me well for several years of training.

    Noticeable Improvement in Recovery

I recently started to get back into running, gearing up for a 5k that's gone virtual thanks to COVID. When I first started, I could tell that my legs were not in the best shape. I would get strains in my thighs, pain in my shins, my legs would itch like crazy. A friend who is a running addict recommended that I look into a pair of recovery boots to help speed up the time between exercises. I opted to try out the Ayre boots by Compex to see if she was blowing smoke or if there was something to these boots. First off, these things are thigh-high boots - with an opening at the knee to enable bending. The boots themselves feel hefty, mostly owed to the design. Each boot has it's own battery powered compressor that inflates and deflates each leg section. What I liked about that was, if my right leg was more sore than my left, I could just use the boot for my right leg. The material feels like a polyester fabric - so if you use these for an extended time, your legs will get hot. That's one of my only real gripes. My legs and feet get sweaty inside the boots before I finished the pre-programed cycle and I had to take them off. I haven't been able to finish the full 60-minute program because of the heat and sweat. Even those these are boots have openings at the knees - you probably shouldn't try and walk in them. I made that rookie mistake and when I tried to walk over our hardwood floors, I immediately slipped and bit the dust like I was on ice skates. Sitting or laying down is the way to use these. They come in a very sturdy carrying case which is helpful to keep them stored safely. If you're someone who likes to travel for athletic activities, it makes storing them a bit easier since you don't have to worry about the boots being damaged while inside the case. You also get a single power cable to recharge the compressor. That means that you can't charge both at once, which is a bit of a drag. These boots are an expensive investment if you're a casual runner / walker. In order to help justify the $600 price tag, my wife and I both use them intermittently after we go for runs. Other than getting sweaty in the boots and the single power cable, my only other gripe is that I would've wished for some kind of pre-defined massage feature. There might be one in there somewhere, but I haven't found it.

A Well Designed Device With Many Caveats

I think I would categorize this device as medically-adjacent. Devices similar to these are used in hospitals when people are bedridden for any length of time - they produce intermittent pressure to the legs to promote good blood flow. It is an intermittent pressure device for the full leg - it is not a massager. The full-leg design is very nice - there are separate devices for each leg, the feet slip in, the the calves are zippered-in, and the thighs are enclosed using Velcro straps. The image suggests that they might be worn standing up but these are not something you will be walking around in. Each boot has four separate pneumatic (air-inflated) chambers that intermittently inflate and deflate to improve blood flow in the lower extremities (I'm not completely sold about the removal of lactic acid). Pressure can be easily varied from slight to pretty strong pressure (50-120mmHg). Controls are easy to access and use (at the top of each boot) and are rechargeable (yes, there are two chargers and the boots can be used while they are charging). They come with a protective case. So to be clear here, these compression boots have a very specific design and function - they stimulate the legs in a way that improves blood flow for various types of recovery. That's kinda the thing for Compex - they also make massagers and tens units. But for their specific function, they function beautifully. For a somewhat unfamiliar device, the controls are surprisingly intuitive. And I think that using a full-leg device seems like it would be more therapeutic than using a calf-sleeve. These should also be considered with the following caveats: (1) For some crazy reason, the Right/Left markings on my boots are reversed - how on earth could something like that happen? (2) The product life expectancy is one year (according to the manual that was online and not included). (3) Likely because of some of the electronic components, these are not supposed to be used in an oxygen-rich environment. (4) Even when both sides are turned on simultaneously, the timing of the compressions and decompressions can get out of synchronization over time - not too annoying, but I found it to be odd. (5) There are only two modes of use - one where the compressions cascade from the feet up (over the four pneumatic chambers) - and one where all the chambers compress then decompress at once. I'm not sure how they managed to suggest a one year life expectancy. The boots feel very well made and not likely to tear or rip with normal usage.

I'd been using a percussion massage gun to try to aid recovery after workouts. It was better than a roller, but I'd still get severe cramps sometimes in my calves. I was hoping this might be a better solution. On the lower settings, it doesn't feel like it's doing much, but you can really dial up the pressure to put a good squeeze on your legs and feet. I could tell my muscles were less tense afterwards, but I can't really tell that the results are any better or worse than what I was getting with a percussion gun. The other potential issue with these is the single size. I'm 6' tall with a 10 1/2 shoe, and these just barely fit. If your feet are any bigger than that, you will probably have trouble getting your foot in and out of the boot. And if you're any taller than that, the thigh section may not clear your knee. As it is, they ride really low on my thighs, and I'm pulling them up as far as I possibly can. I think they work, in their way, but maybe not as much as I was hoping they would.

So to start off I am no runner or athlete. I am a paraplegic who has been in a chair now for 30 years. Being in a chair that long your muscles and hamstrings become drawn and tight.. you need to remain flexible for transferring and mobility. One downside is I get horrible muscle spasms..In a therapy session someone massaging the muscles has an instant calming and immediate relief of the spasms.. as well as a warmth as the muscle is massaged. I cannot physically do that myself so decided to see if these would help at all. They were very easy to put on with the bottom zipping and then velcro across the upper thigh. Comfortable to say the least! After only about 5 minutes with these running it felt amazing as if I was getting a deep tissue massage with them fully inflated feeling the pressure against my muscles. . After wearing them about 20 minutes my legs were completely relaxed. The way these work is very soothing and I'm beyond happy I got them They charge quickly and I have never had them die even after wearing them the longest for me was 30 minutes. It's helped a lot with my mobility not having to fight against strong spasms and the after effect lasts for hours for myself. I'd highly recommend these to others with the same or similar issues

The Ayre wireless rapid compression boot is a great idea for fast over night relief for active people rather your cyclist, athlete or body builder. What this unit tries to accomplish is the breakdown of lactic acid in the lower extremities with an end result of faster recovery. I was really excited to use this product as i do have some experience with these devices. Most people who are interested in this product already know its sole purpose and probably already have a good idea as to what they are looking for. I want to touch real briefly about how this product works and what you can expect to receive from the results for those that are new to this area. The main purpose of leg compression is to basically help reduce swelling and soreness in the lower extremities by applying enough pressure to achieve two goals. First goal is to redirect or slow blood flow to the bottom half and second break up lactic acid which will reduce over all next day soreness. One thing this unit has that is a nice feature is the lack of wires. The only real time your gonna see wires is when you are charging the unit. When i was younger i had gotten in to a really bad motor cycle accident which had left my femur completely shattered in to pieces. While i was doing physical therapy they would often utilize automated leg compression such as this unit. The only difference was they had to be hooked up to wires and they were one solid piece which meant i had to basically lay down and couldn't bend my legs. This unit is much more convenient in the fact that there are no wires and there is a break at the knee cap allowing you to sit down and watch TV while this unit does its job. I like to work out and ride bikes and with my previous leg injury i always wake up either sore the next day or have trouble sleeping due to my leg throbbing all night long. So jumping right in to this unit i tested it out after a short 5 mile bike ride. Immediately after i got home and ate a decent recovery meal i proceed to get comfortable as i put my leg compression suit on. There are a few different settings on here which allow you chose length of time, pressure applied and hold/release preference. I prefer a 60 sec hold and release to help break up any lactic acid. Getting right down to it i sat in the suit for about 30 mins and went about my day with no real immediate notice. Although where the real difference came in to play was at night when i tried to sleep. I actual got a really good nights rest and woke with very little fatigue or soreness. Did it take away all my pain? No, it didn't but that's not to say it didn't work. I noticed a vast improvement in the way i felt the next morning vs when i don't use it. For example normally i wake up really sore and my pain scale can range anywhere from a 5 to 6 however when using this set up for 30 mins my next day pain was more like a 2 to 3. One thing i want to note is there is no electric stimulation with this device so keep that in mind if that is something you use for recovery. Overall the product is pretty cut and dry. It has really only one true purpose and that is over night recovery. Do you wake up the next day and feel 100% better? No, but you will notice a difference and for those of you that have pre-existing conditions like me, this unit is a great help for recovery relief. Overall i feel this unit did a good job and what it claims.

I am 38 years old and have noticed every time I do physical activity I notice a new ache or soreness in my lower extremities. I decided to try these compression boots to see if they helped at all. They do. Right out of the box you notice that the boots are packed in their carrying case which is helpful so you can see how to re-pack them and how they will fit. It is not rocket science, but still helpful nonetheless. It includes an international charger and cord that plugs into both boots at the same time. The best part is that you can use the boots while they are charging. I plugged both boots in, and slipped them on. You slip your foot in, zip up the boot over your shin, then use 3 large Velcro straps over your thigh to secure the boots. You hold the power button for like 2 seconds and they power on and cycle through. They start at the foot and work their way up to the upper thigh. There are 4 "chambers" of compression in total. You can also adjust how much each chamber compresses. I messed around with the settings and ended up accidentally leaving one foot at a much smaller compression amount. At first I thought the chamber had popped or something, but then I watched the LED display and saw that one foot was compressing to '20' and not '50 like the other foot. I adjusted it to 50 and they all matched. It is somewhat hard to see the display as it is on the side of the leg and you have to turn your leg inward and rotate it to see. When you are done you simply hold the power button again for 2 seconds and they shut off, releasing air slowly. They are very easy to use. The only weird thing is that they run at different times even if you press both power buttons at the exact same time. I am not sure if there is some type of method or medical reason for it, but they never run together at the same time. Maybe so you notice the compression in both legs rather than they cancel each other out? Anyways, not necessarily a bad thing, but just something I noticed. So the first day out of the box I felt good after using them. A few days later I played basketball for a few hours. Then I came home, showered, and strapped the boots on for some therapy. WOW! My knees were sore at first and so was one ankle. I seriously noticed a difference after wearing the boots. I used them for about 20 minutes. After I take them off I kind of prance around to see how my legs feel and they feel great. There is still minor soreness as they don't work miracles, but you can go from hobbling around to walking straight. This was for my soreness playing basketball, not saying if you are injured you will be restored to normal. But I honestly do notice a difference. My second test was after a rigorous workout in my basement (P90X3). I came up and got ready for bed. While laying in bed I strapped on the boots and ran them for about 20 minutes, took them off and went to bed. When I got up about an hour later to use the restroom, I noticed that my legs felt fine and rejuvenated rather than sore before I put the boots on. It is a good feeling. I don't want to forget to mention that the boots feel great while they are working. Each chamber compresses one at a time and it is quite a nice feeling. You are totally relaxed, like you are getting a nice leg massage. Also, the batter life is great. I charged it when I first got it and have only had to charge it once in about a month. I used it about 6 or 7 times in that period and it did not really die, it just showed one bar so I plugged it back in. It doesn't feel like it uses a lot of power. Overall, I cannot recommend these compression boots enough. You will notice the difference and if you work out regularly and feel sore, these will be a heaven send. If you are an athlete you will probably use these more and will find yourself wondering why you did not purchase them earlier.
