These unfortunately do break down over time and will break down even sooner if you use any kind of liquid to clean them. That being said, I will never use the original ones ever again and just buy these as I need them,

They are a great product and make my AirPod Pros even better, the sound is better, the noise canceling is better and so is the fit.
