A Pretty Good Fitness Watch

Short Answer: The Coros Apex 2 Pro is a rugged, feature rich, accurate fitness watch which is hampered by a couple of missing features.
The Coros Apex 2 Pro is a large watch that definitely makes its presence known on your wrist. It is a little over 1/2" thick with a large solid 47mm bezel surrounding a 33mm screen. A 22mm nylon band velcro closure band keeps it snug on your wrist. Over the last week, I've have logged about 200mi of mixed road, gravel, and virtual cycling with it, mixed with hiking, walking, gym, and general wear. If you sweat a lot, you'll want to replace the nylon band with a silicone band. It gets soaked and becomes uncomfortable, and started to stink after only a week.
Out of the box, there is the watch, a charging cable, a quick start guide, and regulatory stuff. Setup was fast, download the Coros app to your phone, pair, basic setup, and you are ready to go. I started with the initial config, and changed options later as I figured out what I needed.
First things first, I found the GPS to be very accurate especially when paired with my phone. Even walking inside through stores was tracked pretty well. Coros does seem to do some correction using the phone GPS, I turned off the phone and the Apex 2 Pro GPS track did get a bit more fiddly. The heart rate monitor seemed quite accurate as well, tracking nicely with a chest strap HR monitor I use (and was hoping to replace). The display is a LCD display with a backlight that was very readable under all conditions. Battery life is stellar, I've charged the watch only once.
Interface is through two fixed buttons and a digital dial (crown) button that is used to scroll through lists. The lists are large but can be configured and some shortcuts applied to the two fixed buttons thankfully. There is touchscreen scrolling that can be active always, on maps and activity lists, or just on the maps. It's not perfect, but the UI is quite useable. There doesn't appear to be any activity auto-detect; you have to manually start and end each activity.
The Apex 2 Pro has a sleep monitoring function that did detect when I fell asleep watching tv. I'm a side sleeper. The watch is so large that I couldn't wear it to bed without catching it on something or hitting myself.
The Apex 2 Pro comes preloaded with maps and you can add a route for breadcrumb routing. The watch will alert you if you are off route and show your position relative to the route, but it won't get you back on route. There is no turn by turn navigation. Additionally, it doesn't appear you can a route library from which to choose, you have to load each route from the app as you need them.
There are a couple of features that are almost inexplicably missing. ANT+ support was removed, which makes Bluetooth the only option for sensors. Since most cycling sensors (heartrate, cadence, powermeter, ...) only support single channel Bluetooth, you can't pair them with both a cycling computer and the watch simultaneously. Additionally, there is no NFC/wallet feature, so no using the watch to pay for coffee in the middle of the ride. Coros works with a number of third party apps, but doesn't integrate with Zwift, MyWhoosh, Rouvy, or any other virtual cycling trainer. The HR broadcast can replace a chest monitor, but the watch can't do anything else, including display time, while in this mode. Music and podcasts must be downloaded as mp3's, there is no streaming interface.
It's pretty clear that Coros is focussed on the fitness market. They also seem to be committed to adding activities and improvements to the Apex 2 Pro. The long battery life make it a great choice for any multi-day activities and as a backup to other devices. The Coros Apex 2 Pro is a good watch that covers all the fundamentals, but at a premium price that should be balanced against how well it suits your activities.

Watch Made for the Active Athlete

With so many smartwatches on the market, it is important to find a watch that can match your lifestyle. With the COROS Apex 2 Pro GPS Outdoor Watch, you have a terrific watch for outdoor training and activity.
Out of the box, you immediately notice a well-crafted watch. There is a bit of a setup that you must complete. The companion app is available for both iPhone and Android, so it is easy to pair with other smart devices. From the app, you can select from several preformed watch faces with various complications (various data) for you to see at a quick glance. There is a bit of a learning curve associated with the watch. If you are switching from other smartwatches, the side buttons may not do what you think they do. You must retrain your mind on what these buttons do. Overall, you should learn it quickly.
As I stated earlier, this is a watch that is tailored more to an active individual. If you are training for a distance race or ironman type activity, this watch is great for you. It can handle just about any environment that you can imagine. The information says it can handle between -4 degrees F to 120 degrees F and up to 5 ATM of pressure. I didn’t take it close to any of these extremes, but this does give you an idea that it is made for use. This is made for water or for land. You can go underwater with this watch as it is water resistant to over 150 feet.
The watch also gives you access to several training applications. You can download premade training templates or create your own. You can maximize your efforts throughout your workouts. With 32 GB of memory, you can download your favorite music and play it through Bluetooth headphones while you work out.
I was a bit skeptical of the band at first. It is a full cloth strap that is secured in place by Velcro. However, it is extremely comfortable to wear all day. In warmer weather, it does get a little warm on your wrist, but it is tolerable.
While the watch is mostly created for your active lifestyle, it still will give you notifications on the watch face. I get scores from games or even am alerted to texts if I am paired with my iPhone. The watch, however, does not really run a number of these types of applications. If you are mostly interested in non-exercise applications, you may be a little disappointed with what this watch does.
If you are active though, this is a watch to consider. The battery life on this watch is the best of any smartwatch I have used. I used another watch in January for a half marathon. The battery barely lasted 2 hours using GPS and tracking health during the race. The COROS Apex 2 lasts over 2 days with full GPS and can last even longer under normal operations. The screen is always on, and it works wonderfully. As far as tracking mileage on the GPS, this watch is highly accurate. I have had other watches inflate the distance. This watch appears to be highly accurate.
In the end, I could not enjoy this watch more. For training for endurance races, this is exactly the type of watch I want. The watch has great battery life, tracks my health functions, pairs with other workout apps like Strava or Apple Health, and is highly accurate. While this watch may not cater to the casual athlete, if you want a watch that can meet and exceed your workout needs, this COROS Apex 2 is the watch for you.

Durable, high-quality hybrid sports / smartwatch

The Coros - Apex 2 Pro GPS Outdoor Watch is a very versatile, high-quality watch. It has many features that make it an excellent fitness tracker / outdoor sports watch while also providing many basic smartwatch features for normal everyday usage. It is stylish enough to be worn and used as an everyday watch but where this watch really shines is its outdoor sports watch features.
In my opinion, one of the most important features an outdoors sports watch should have is accurate GPS tracking because I really enjoy hiking and exploring different trails and areas. I like having the ability to navigate and track my path when I’m out exploring unfamiliar trails and areas. Being able to find your way back is very important when going out on adventures like this and the Coros Apex 2 Pro watch makes it very easy to do this with its built-in GPS antenna and navigation features. I really like how this watch comes with free downloadable global offline landscape and topographical maps because they can literally be a lifesaver in certain circumstances when adventuring outside of range of a cellular connection. The fact that this watch can also provide other detailed information such as tracking elevation changes, heart rate, distance, speed, etc. is another added bonus.
All of the features the Coros Apex 2 Pro watch provides are impressive but what good are all these features if the watch itself is not durable and cannot withstand the rigors of being outside in the elements? Fortunately, this is nothing to worry about when it comes to this watch because it seems like it is extremely durable and will last a very long time. The exterior is designed with a sapphire glass touch screen and grade 5 titanium alloy bezel. It is temperature and water resistant with thresholds that are well outside of anything I will be subjecting the watch to and it has great battery life with up to 66 hours of full GPS use and 24 days of normal day-to-day use. This 24 days battery life for day-to-day use in combination with its regular smartwatch features such as notifications for text messages, emails, and phone calls makes it a great watch for people even if they don’t plan on using the outdoors features all that frequently. The only slight drawback is the fact that it uses a special proprietary charging cable but given how long the battery lasts, having to use this special cable to charge the watch really isn’t that big of a deal.
Overall, the Coros - Apex 2 Pro GPS Outdoor Watch is a high-quality, durable, and very versatile hybrid outdoor / smartwatch and I highly recommend it!

Love it. Can't say enough good things about the Coros Apex 2 Pro. Here are the positives
- Precision: Utilizes advanced GPS technology for pinpoint accuracy, it tracked my run and bike ride really well. Love the summary at the end of each workout
- Durability: At first I thought the Velcro band made the watch feel cheap but I understand it. It makes the watch feel secure on my wrist but light at the same time.
- Long Battery Life: I’ve been wearing this watch for over 10 days and still going strong. Its at 60%. From what I can see it will last 25 day or so. Been working out (run, weights ) for 5 days
- User-Friendly Interface: Intuitive design makes navigation and accessing feature easy . There is a lot of functions but the interface makes it easy.
- Apps and tracking: the sleeping, HRV, heart rate, and all the other functions motivates me to do better. This watch focuses on fitness and health. And has all the other functions of a smart watch.
- Comprehensive Functionality: I never thought I needed an altimeter, barometer, and compass for monitoring elevation changes, weather conditions, and navigation. But its nice to have.
The Apex 2 Pro GPS is a versatile and reliable watch for those who are active. Highly recommend this watch

So, this is not my first smart watch but it is my first fitness watch, so I was super excited to get this out and burn some calories! Of course just as I open the box and start setup, the weather here turns abysmal and has been for the last week.
None the less I was determined to check out the GPS function. This was very easy to set up just opening the app select if you are on foot or bike draw your route, transfer to the watch and off you go. It is really nice to be able to use the watch to navigate and keep track of your journey and keep your pesky phone in your pocket or, just leave it behind. It worked great for the short run I was able to squeeze in during a short lull in the weather. Although I am familiar with my local neighborhood it will notify you if you get off course which will be really handy when I am in unfamiliar territory. This even includes the elevation profile which can be very handy.
Battery life is exceptional as the watch lasts for days in between charges. Though, one negative is charging. You get a USB cord that has a USB A on one end and a proprietary plug on the other. This means I need to keep track of non standard cable when traveling. If it had wireless charging then I could forgive, even overlook this obvious flaw but alas, no.
The watch is very comfortable and balanced and feels great even when I am flailing around playing squash in the gym.
I also appreciate the various health basics it keeps track of such as Heart Rate, Resting Heart Rate, Stress and Sleep. While sleeping it tracks when you are awake, REM, Light and Deep sleep. As someone with trouble getting a good rest this is very helpful as I make slight changes to my routine and then get feedback from the device.
Finally, I have connected it to my phone for notifications and it is handy to read text messages and emails and get other phone notifications but I cant reply to texts or emails.

Solid fitness device, with basic features

I've used several watches as fitness monitors. I have come to realize that I do appreciate the combination of deep fitness features and at least some smart watch type features. Full smartwatches for me have been historically underwhelming. I like the notifications on my wrist, but prefer to pick up my phone to respond. The fitness aspects really hit home for me though. I have used full smartwatches with fitness integration and I have used more fitness oriented watches, like this Apex 2 Pro. My favorite uses for this sort of device is generally strength training and hiking. In both aspects, this Apex 2 Pro has been solid. The tracking of both heart rate and blood ox have been within 5% of the competition. And yes, I was one of those people that had three devices on my wrists. I also compared it to a heart rate chest strap while lifting and while the chest strap remained consistently steady, there was some jumpiness with the Apex. I would say they were within 8-10% of each other on average. Overall it's a solid performer, matching performance with other major brands. The one star I took from the rating was mainly due to the interface. It's not very full featured for one thing. It has your basics, and interfaces with an app that delivers a good data feedback, but there are no real app connections beyond that. It paired with Strava and Komoot, two apps I use for hiking, and you can load trail maps, but it's very manual. I would also say the screen is a washed out. I realize it's not an OLED screen, and it does have some sunlight strength, but overall it was not always a clear view when I glanced at it for information. I would say it's a device with a really solid foundation that could use some extra features and love. I will consider Coros a brand I can go to in the future.

Feature-packed smartwatch for an active lifestyle

By now you know what you want in a smart watch: comfortable fit; extended battery life; fitness and GPS features; something eye-catching would be nice too, right? Well, the Coros Apex 2 Pro aims to be all that and more. This sports watch caters to all activity types-- from fitness runners to marathon junkies to biking enthusiasts. The Apex 2 Pro has all the features you want to track and monitor an active lifestyle.
Many smartwatches feel bulky on the wrist, but the Apex 2 Pro feels very light, comfortable, and is almost unnoticeable. It's not something that needs to be removed all that much either, with 30 days of regular battery life that's cut slightly short only by consistent usage of its GPS tracking features.
The watch looks great. It has a big 1.3" watch face with a button to light up the screen, and the display is fully customizable through the free Coros app. The variety of selectable watch faces is numerous and growing. Its strap uses a very strong Velcro that makes wearing and removing the watch quick and easy. Navigating the watch settings is simple by rotating the knob and selecting items. The Apex 2 Pro is fitted with a number of activity monitors that readily collect information in real time, with tests to record things like fitness, sleep patterns, and exercise recovery. Customize workouts on the app or download some for free onto the watch for training. You can even view full landscape and topographical maps on the watch by connecting it to a computer and downloading a selectable, customized map file from the Coros website.
I especially like the road running metrics, with race predictor features for different runs-- 5ks, half-marathons, etc. The watch uses data from your recent weeks of runs to make informed pace estimates to set personal goals and benchmarks. It almost feels like too much information at times, but coupled with the route monitors, exercise regulating features, and GPS mapping, the Apex 2 Pro ensures you have all the data needed to train in the most efficient, effective manner.
Overall, the Coros Apex 2 Pro is a serious smartwatch for the serious athlete. It has all the features you'll ever need and is the perfect accessory for the runner, biker, swimmer, and athlete in you.

Are you a person that enjoys the outdoors and needs something to help map out your adventures or even your workouts? We’ll look no further than the COROS - APEX 2 Pro GPS Outdoor Watch.
I was really excited for this watch as I have had many “outdoor” watches and accessories to help me in my adventures. The Coros Apex 2 Pro comes packed with features that I was excited about! First the GPS is claimed to be 50% more powerful and accurate and comes with offline maps that you can download through the app. These really stood out to me because I like to go off the grid, be it fishing, hiking or trail riding.
To test this watch I wanted to push its limits, so I downloaded maps for the Everglades as signal is very bad in areas. I knew strong rains were coming but wanted to put it through its paces. I spent 8 hours traversing the national park on foot hiking the trails and checking out the amazing wildlife. The watch faded into being apart of me, wasn’t uncomfortable with hot and humid weather that brought intense sweat. I didn’t notice any rashes or rubbing.
The GPS was on point every step of the way and the screen on watch was so bright even in direct sunlight! The intense usage never felt the watch get hot or overbearing. Once the rain started it took a good soaking through some torrential down pours. Definitely good on the claim of water resistance features.
After my adventure it had so much juice left I was suprised! Plus super easy to use the cable and charge. Once I was back I went to the gym with it and enjoyed seeing the workout features it had built in like the heart rate sensor, which seemed pretty accurate with in 1-2 bpm of what I normally see.
Some features I want to shout out in the screen, it’s a 1.3" sapphire screen and titanium bezel. This thing took a beating with all the trees and brush! Not one scratch after all the trials I put it through.
Overall I’m. Very pleased with this watch, it’s probably one of the best wearable tech I have owned. This is now my daily watch for all my outdoor adventures and workouts.

I received my watch a couple days before competing in a 10k race and I'm glad I did.
First off, the watch is very comfortable to wear and sports a large screen to view detailed information on your run. The screen is also easy to see in bright daylight but also has an auto backlight feature when it's dark.
I was able to program a pace alert during my race so I knew if I was going too fast or too slow. Throughout the run I would get high pace alert which allowed me to reassess how I was feeling and adjust pace accordingly. Overall, the pace alert came in very handy and I was able to place 2nd overall in the race while viewing my current pace at all times and alerts at every mile for my lap time. The GPS was extremely accurate and had the race completed at exactly 6.21 miles.
The same day as my race I went up to Big Bear Lake and decided to go into the snow covered hiking trails to look for some good sledding spots. I activated my watch on Hiking mode and was able to keep my connection to GPS at all times while showing me my pace, elevation gain, heart rate, training load, and calories burned. All the information is saved upon completion and you're able to view it directly from the watch or the Coros app which has a great design and user interface.
Overall, I'm very happy with this GPS watch and wear it at all times even when I'm not running. I can't wait to continue my training with it and improve in my endurance events.

I've been using smart watches almost as long as they've been around. My job reimburses my purchase for one every year, so I've gone with it and switched every year. My understanding of what to expect with a smart watch is clear. While Coros markets the Apex 2 Pro as a "GPS outdoor" watch, by most, it will be viewed as a smart watch, and compared to the other watches in that market. After spending some time with the Apex 2 Pro, I understand what Coros is attempting to do, however, like most, my frame of reference for watches in this market sets up certain expectations, and of those expectations, this watch comes up short.
In terms of design, the Coros Apex 2 Pro is Ok. The watch is smooth. It could do with a better band, but the watch is smooth. The build quality is solid. Clearly made for outdoors and activity. However, this watch requiring a charge, I absolutely hate the location of the charging port, and, I hate that it takes non-standard charger. Sure, we've let another brand get away with that for years (before they were recently forced to transition to USB C) but that brand produced several products and their charging cords were easily obtainable due to the popularity of their products. If I lose this cord, I can't just go get another one from any random place, and, even with the cord, it's come out when charging the watch a few times pretty easily. This is a major issue for me.
Setup for the watch is "simpleish." Get the watch to come one and tell time...simple. However, the watch doesn't come preloaded with all the necessary data for all it's features. While a major feature marketed with the watch is it's GPS, you have to download the maps on to the watch. 10 gigs worth of maps. That took me all night, and, with the above listed issues with the charger, my charger came loose overnight while downloading the maps...when I woke up the battery was close to dead.
Moving past that, the resolution of the screen is pretty low. Looking at it side by side with some of my other watches, it looked like dated tech. With a basic watch face, it's fine, but anything with more detail, or worse still, phone notifications? It's bad. The watch is advertised as having a touch-screen display...for the life of me I couldn't get it to work...then I figured out you had to turn on the touch screen ability. I'm not sure why that's a thing at all.
Navigation through the watch's features feels clunky. Even with the touch screen display turned on, it seems you can only move one space at a time. If something is at the bottom of the list, I can't flip past other options I don't have interest in at a high speed, I have to move one option at a time..
When it comes to data? Tracking workouts, tracking sleep...the watch does a great job...but so do the Apex 2 Pros competitors...with much better displays that read out the data clearer. Ultimately the display weakens the area where the watch does perform well.
I get what Coros was reaching for with the Apex 2 Pro, and I understand who the watch his intended for...but Coros comes up short with some fundamentals that are really hard to get past. Factor in the price point and I can't see myself recommending this watch to anyone.

Hi Bruce, Thank you for sharing your review of the APEX 2 Pro, and addressing areas of opportunity with direct feedback. We hope to continuously improve our devices to suit our users needs, and we take your feedback seriously. That being said, we'd like to address a few of your comments with suggestions that may enhance your experience.
- Downloading Maps. We can understand why this may feel like a tedious task, however it is the same for any GPS watch on the market (or device, such as bike computers), that would like to have the most detailed, up to date, navigation. With the downloaded offline maps, you will have access to both Landscape and Topo maps, with the option to overlay them at the same time as well. Landscape maps currently provide information such as streets, major road networks, natural features, and waterways. Topo maps are a detailed record of a land area, giving geographic positions and elevations for both natural and man-made features. They show the shape of the land, the mountains, valleys, and plains by means of contour lines (lines of equal elevation above sea level). The hybrid map takes key information from both the Topo and Landscape maps creating an integrated version of the two maps in an easy-to-use format. As you can imagine, for some athletes, this is an incredibly important feature! By being able to select the specific regions to download, it will prevent large map files from taking up too much space on the watch, while simultaneously allow the regions that the users do select to be incredibly detailed. We hope this helps provide insight.
- Screen Resolution. COROS watches use LCD screens. The visibility of this type of screen is the best when used in outdoor environments under direct sunlight, making for an ideal adventure/ outdoor GPS watch with long battery life. The stronger the sunlight is, the better the screen visibility is. The brightness of the backlight should be enough for darker environments or indoor use. This support article addresses Screen Visibility and some ways you can adjust your settings to potentially improve it. https://support.coros.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039840412-Tips-for-backlight-and-screen-visibility
- Touch Screen. The ability to turn off the touch screen is important for outdoor athletes. Specific scenarios can create frustration with the touch screen during activity, such as wearing long sleeves that get wet/ sweaty, or accidentally bumping the screen during activity. The option to turn off the touch screen allows users the option to personalize their watch for their specific use cases and activities.
As you continue to get to know your APEX 2 Pro, please don't hesitate to reach out our Support Team with questions! We hope that the information we provided answers some of your questions.

The Coros Apex 2 Pro has some great features, but it’s crippled by its insanely dull and low-quality touchscreen display.
Inside the box comes the Coros Watch, the wrist band, and a proprietary charging cable. The first time I turned on my watch, it gave me a QR code instructing me to sync with the Coros app. This is where you create an account, update, set up workout times etc. After I connect the watch to my phone, I was able to see the home screen on my watch…At first, I thought it was broken because the light and colors were so dull, but I quickly realized that’s what the display looks like. The screen is not lit up at all, instead it only has a back light that can be toggled on or off. When the back light is off, you can barely see the screen unless you’re in a very well-lit area. I did notice that I can see the screen a little better when looking at it, at an angle rather than head on. Considering this watch has a premium price, I would expect more when it comes to the quality of the screen. As it sits right now, I can barely see the screen at all, even with the backlight lit up. And the colors are so dull, they might as well have made this watch black and white.
The Coros has a sapphire crystal touchscreen display, but for some reason the touchscreen is turned off by default. I turned it on under setting in the watch and while it works, it does have some noticeable lag. So, I just prefer to use the digital crown. The watch does provide haptic feedback on both the crown and the touchscreen when pushed. It also works when pressing the power/light button and the back button.
Under the hood, the Coros does impress me with many features that work really well. Such as, the heartbeat sensor, steps counter, compass, ability to download offline maps, GPS navigation, and it even tracks your sleep. On top of that, the Coros has an amazing battery life. I wore the watch all day long and it only went down 2%. I’m guessing the low display quality has something to do with this. Creating activities and workouts is a breeze with the Coros App, as they made it very user friendly. You can even connect Bluetooth headphones to the watch and listen to music while working out.
Overall, I like some of the features that the Coros Apex 2 pro has to offer…Such as the heartbeat sensor, amazing battery life, haptic feedback, sleep tracking, steps counter, GSP compass. But the real problem lies with the display. I have such a hard time seeing the display, that I can’t even use it. Which is very disappointing, because there are some good qualities to this watch, unfortunately, they don’t do me any good if I can’t see them. That being said, sadly I can’t recommend this to anyone until Coros comes out with a better display.

Great watch all around!! My primary activity is running both road and trails. Highly satisfied with this watch. The battery life is more than I expected and the watch is very light weight. Definitely worth the money!
