Very Slow After 20% or so Written

I bought this drive in December 2022 when it was on sale, but I didn't have a computer with NVME support until April 2023. I installed this drive into my new laptop, and starting moving video footage files to it planning to edit them during a business trip. I slowed down by a lot after about 400GB or so written into the drive. I was on a tight schedule for travel so I left the file transfer (total 2TB)over night to complete. My business trip got extended when I was not in the country to 3 months. I came back to the US in late August and wanted to find out why this drive slowed down so far. I tested with CrystalDiskMark (CDM) with all default settings and I got around 3000MB/s read and write sometimes. I realized this drive is probably designed to have good result with the default 1GB file size test. So I tested with 64GB file size and only sequential to save time. I consistantly get around 80MB/s write speed, and 2000MB/s read speed. The bottleneck is around 8GB. So I backed up everything to other drives, emptied this drive, and run CDM on empty drive, I got adverstised speed. I keep copying files to the drive until it slows down, which happens around 20% capacity used, and run CDM with 64GB test, same 80MB/s write speed. I contacted Crucial support, and they claim this is how the drive should perform. I can get a replacement. But since it's not an individual issue, getting a replacement means nothing. The email chain has been going back and forth since September. Crucial told me to update firmware, perform optimizing steps, and I did all of them, yet same result. I have other QLC drives, Included test results on intel 660p and 665p. When they have more ratio of space written, I can still get faster than mechanical drive sequential write speed, around 180MB/s. If you plan to write more than 8GB of data to this drive at once at some point, do not buy this drive. It's not an unrealistic situation. Let's say you use this drive in your laptop, with OS, some software and documents. It's easily exceeding 20% of the drive capacity. Now you want to copy photos from your camera SD card to this drive, good luck. I hope you never take more than 8GB of photos.

With the price finally being low enough to snag, this drive is perfect for any PC. With plenty of storage for games with room for more. The speeds match that of Western Digital (which I used before this) and as long as there's a heatsink, the temps stay perfect. Definetly recommend this to anyone looking for a large capacity NVME drive.

Got 2 crucial 2tb & 2 4tb NVMEs. Good temps, even when pushed. All of them in a gen3 asus hypercard with the fan running. (But great case airflow.) Sensor 2 in pic is the linux /home directory I was playing a game on before writing this review. Also got a crucial sata drive in there. Crucial has just been a solid brand for me.

Great value, I installed this to replace the stock ssd on my G14. I cloned my original 1TB drive onto this one and I partitioned the rest as a separate drive... Works perfectly.

    Slow reads using external enclosures

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Great value and capacity. Using it in an external enclosure and getting writes as high as 970MBs but reads are half that at around 520GBs. Have tried 3 different enclosures and as many cables with same result. Will be returning. Oddly reads and writes on Thunderbolt are the same at around 2,700MBs.

While this is focused as a budget drive, it's actually rather performant for the price tier. I'm using it to store games on my Windows 11 PC. It's working out great for that use case. I wouldn't recommend this drive for write heavy workloads since it's write endurance is lower than average for the capacity, but that's traditionally how crucial makes their drives. It's awesome for read intensive workloads such as game storage.

I used it upgrade my Mac Book Pro 2015. Using an adapter and it work as expected. Its not as fast but it does work I need the size to store all my photos. I use this old MacBook to edit my photos in Lightroom. So Far no issue, on Blackmagic Speed test Write is 2614/1871 MB/s Write/Read Speed. I wonder why Write is faster than Read. I don't mind I need the space more than the Speed.

I usually purchase Samsung drives - but the price was right and the reviews were good - have installed this as a 'work drive' for video editing instead of the 7200rpm HDD being used before. It runs better than expected.

I'm reviewing this recent purchase. It works and the price to performance seems fine. I have no idea how long this will hold up. If its average it is definitely 5 stars if not probably 1 or 2 stars. One minor gripe it says 4 TB but when I formatted its closer to 3.6. I know you should already know this but it does rub me the wrong way every time I install an SSD and it does this.
