    Solid PCIe4 NVME Drive

This is a solid drive for anyone looking for great performance and a clean aesthetic. It's not the fastest drive you can buy, but it handily shows some of the advantage you can get going from a PCIe 3 to a 4 drive. The build I have this drive in is as follows: AMD R9 5900x Asus Crosshair Dark Hero Motherboard Nvidia RTX 3080 FE 32gb Patriot 4000mhz RAM (running at 3600cl14) Sabrent 1TB Rocket gen4 NVME I use this machine for a mixture of workloads; primarily gaming, but also for media creation and editing as well. The Crucial P5 plus has been a welcome addition to an already lightning quick machine; I've found I can get reliably get in the neighborhood of sequential 6,000 mb/s read and 5,000 mb/s write speeds with this drive, tested using CrystalDiskMark. Some of the top tier drives can do a bit more, but for more money, and at this point, I feel like the P5 plus offers a great price to performance mix. Some other thoughts on this drive... The black aesthetic is great. I personally have a blacked out motif (black Lian Li o11 dynamic with aforementioned blacked out Asus Dark Hero mobo) and this blends in nicely. The temps are about league average here, too; without using a heat sink, I saw temps hit in the upper 60s C under heavy workload and drop to the lower 30s when not. Attaching one of the Dark Hero included heat sinks, the temps under load were closer to the lower 60s/upper 50s. Admittedly, my case has phenomenal airflow, but these numbers are great none the less. As Gen4 becomes more widely utilized, the utility for this drive will continue to grow. While content creators will reap immediate benefits from a drive with this level of performance, the coming 8 to 12 months will see GPU and CPU manufacturers begin to roll out support for Microsoft's DirectStorage API. At that point, you'll really see the P5 shine for gaming uses. As it stands now, this is a great drive as is.

Fast Gen 4 M2 SSD just not exponentially faster

This SSD requires PCIe Gen 4 slot, though it may work on PCIe gen 3 slot which I have not tested myself. So, in order to achieve its max read and write speed, you definitely need Gen 4 slot. If your laptop or PC motherboard are not fairly recent, they are likely not to support Gen 4 so this is not the right SSD for you. So how fast is it? Well generally speaking SSD is fast. However, comparing a PCIe Gen 4 SSD like this to Gen 3, which theoretically speaking PCIe Gen 4 connection is twice as fast as Gen 3, the performance we would expect to be getting from PCIE Gen 4 SSD is twice as fast as Gen 3 SSD. But that is not the case with this SSD. I’m not saying it’s not fast, it’s just does not seem that it is twice as fast as Gen 3 SSD. I got Crucial Gen 3 P5 SSD and this P5 plus is still faster than the Gen 3 SSD but it’s just not twice as fast when loading games. If your PC or laptop has a Gen 4 PCIe slot, it makes sense to buy PCIe Gen 4 SSD if you can bear the cost even if the results you’re getting are not exponentially better than Gen 3 SSD. In that case, compatibility and reliability are two reasons to go with this SSD. But if you are not upgrading and building your own PC, you may want to stick with cheaper PCIe Gen 3 SSD and save the money somewhere else like for GPU.

Extremely fast on PCIe 4.0, backward compatible

My gaming PC only came with a 256 GB SSD, expecting me to install games on the HDD. And it was fine, I didn't mind. After installing the Crucial P5 Plus SSD, I wish that I could get back some of the lost time that I wasted staring at a loading screen, watching progress bars slowly fill. Installation was painless. After using the Windows tool to back up my current SSD to a secondary drive and creating a USB boot disk, I unplugged it, and slotted in the new one. A quick boot into recovery, followed by restore using the backup I just made, and I was back in, looking like I hadn't done a thing. I did have to remember to expand the partition size after restoring. Initial testing had me a little worried about random read/write speeds being so low until I discovered that I was supposed to run Crucial's performance tuning tool, but after that speeds were just fine. I ran some timing tests between running Civ VI off my HDD and off the SSD, and the initial loadup of the game is cut by 2/3rds (20 seconds vs over a minute), and getting to the actual game after starting a new one happens as soon as the voiceover stops, instead of a full minute later. Amazing! PCIe 4.0 is brand new, so only a few PCs support it, however the spec is backwards compatible, so even if your M.2 slot is PCIe 3.0 you'll still get the benefit of super fast performance compared to a traditional HDD, it's just that the 4.0 is double the speed.

This SSD is great. It is fast, reliable, and perfect for gaming. From a gaming performance perspective, this SSD delivers. It has generation 4 PCIE connectivity which means super fast read/write ability. Another nice feature is this drive is interoperable with generation 3, so even if your rig doesn’t currently support gen 4, you can always still use this with a gen 3 for now and see the benefit later. it has great read and write speeds. It claims a 6600 mbps sequential read speed. These fast speeds should significantly reduce load times which means more gaming and less waiting. It has a claimed mean time to failure of 2 million hours and it has a 5 year warranty, both of which are great reassurances that this item will remain reliable. One thing I wish this SSD had was a built in heat sink. To install this into a ps5, a heat sink is required so I needed to purchase one separately. However, I imagine many won’t be concerned about this, as those installing this into their PC case with existing cooling solutions may not need a heat sink. Worth noting: this SSD includes the mounting screw which is a plus. Overall, this is a great, fast, and reliable ssd.

Perfect SSD for a boot drive!

This is a perfect drive to use for your computer with an available Gen. 4 NVMe slot, with blazing fast speeds and just the right amount of capacity for a boot drive. You can store your frequently used games and programs on this drive and if you still need more space you can buy an additional larger capacity drive if needed for larger files or games that are a larger capacity or that you don't use frequently. This is the first Gen. 4 NVMe drive that I have used and I can definitely tell the difference in almost all instances of using this drive and I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to add some storage to their compatible computer. While the NVMe standard is backward compatible, so if your motherboard only has a Gen. 3 slot this can still be used, I personally wouldn't recommend using it on an older motherboard as you will not get the full capabilities that this drive is capable of.

The slick Black PCB (which will unfortunately never be seen in the belly of the laptop) P5 Plus Gen 4 with TRIM, S.M.A.R.T. data reporting, secure erase capability and hardware-accelerated, AES 256-bit full-disk encryption TCG OPAL 2.0 specification (Windows Bitlocker compliant as well) should keep your data safe in the event your hardwareget lost or stolen. Crucial is still good enough to provide an m.2 screw which is always appreciated. They also provide downloads to Acronis cloning software to support the P5 Plus to get you up and running if you're replacing and cloning your previous drive. I would consider the P5 Plus as a value oriented drive. In the spectrum of this generation of drives it sits between the best of PCIe Gen3 and performance Gen4 SSDs, although depending on the workload you are hard pressed to find any real world noticeable differences with top end drives. Although when copying very large files(50GB+) sustained performance hits begin to take their toll but for my uses the drive well exceeds any expectations I have of it. I don't know if this is due to software limitations, given that crucial has employed their latest controller. Maybe a firmware upgrade will bring improvements. The P5 Plus is not the best of the best for Gen4 M.2 NVMe SSDs, but the performance to price ratio is puts this drive in an extremely competitive position worth considering on the majority of daily use workhorse computers. I'm using this as a storage drive on my laptop to handle all my personal files and it gives me peice of mind that I can keep the contents secure.

Installed this in a custom built pc, takes literally 2 minutes. Comes with a screw for the m.2 slot for those people whose mobo manufacturer's declined to include one (nice touch). What to say about it. It's fast. How fast? That's hard to say. Crystal disk mark reports it's right around the advertised speed of 6600MB/s, but since I only have one pcie 4 drive I can't actually hit that speed on a file transfer. Running two file transfers at 100GB each from pcie 3.0 nvme drives was inconclusive but ... yeah fast. I have no complaints, wish I had another one.

I replaced the old SATA hard drive in my Dell XPS desktop with this one. And I am very happy with the upgrade. All the apps as well as the boot time is much faster. The installation itself was super quick (also thanks to the Dell XPS design I think). I popped up the desktop cover and inserted it in the PCIe slot. I used the software that came with the drive to clone my old hard drive. And that's it! I don't think it can get any simpler than that. If you want to make your computer fast, I highly recommend this upgrade.

I have not installed memory or hard drives in my gaming computer but after researching quickly it was a very easy and quick install. My computer automatically knew I added the drive and I then changed the drive letter to one that I preferred. I loaded some games on the drive and tested from previous original hard drive on the computer. I felt like it was more seamless and faster.

All the other reviews have gone through the M.2 and PCIE-4 stuff. Speeds have been posted, install procedures laid out, etc etc, blah blah blah. All I can do is simply back all that up. I first put the P5 Plus in my desktop via an extra M.2 slot. I put a single game on it and everything about the "usual" process was simply faster. Download went smoother/quicker, the install went smoother/quicker, again...everything just went faster. Boot time, load time, everything was noticeably quicker. After a few days of this I re-formatted it and put it in my laptop which also had an open M.2 slot. Same story, blazing fast. So while I did not mess with the P5 Plus + PCIE-4 I did try it on two different machines and yielded the same results both times. Fast, straight forward, and not extremely expensive by any means. Easy recommendation for someone looking to expand storage along with quick read/write capabilities.

    What Load Times?

I used to think an SSD was fast. Then I got an nvme drive and redefined fast. Then I got THIS PCIe 4.0 nvme drive and redefined fast again. This thing is an unbelievable upgrade to a 3.0 nvme m.2 drive. After bios screen I am at my desktop launching programs in six seconds. Loading times between areas or first time starting a game are nonexistent. The computer shuts down before I can even take my glasses and headphones off. I can’t recommend this drive enough. Make sure your system has some kind of passive cooling at the very least for this drive to ensure optimal performance.

The first thing to note is that this drive does NOT have a heat sink attached. This does, however, mean that it is a universal drive, in that it can fit in laptops as well as desktops. If you want cooling, you will have to provide your own solution. Also the drive is single-sided. The bottom has nothing but a sticker. As far as managing heat goes, the top (which has the chips) also has a sticker. This is pretty standard, but if you do want to attach a heat sink, peeling the sticker off (and voiding your warranty) will give the best results. Still, while in my tiny laptop, heat has not been an issue at all. Also, probably not a big deal to some, but this drive came with a screw to attach it! This is the first time that I have seen hardware come with an SSD in years (Samsung, take note). If you have the screw, no big deal, but if you don't this will save you a trip to the hardware store. It doesn't cost much, but is a nice touch just the same. Kudos to Crucial for providing this. Performance-wise, it is great. However, we have reached the stage where, unless you are a serious professional video editor copying gigabytes of files around commonly, it is hard to tell a difference between a gen 4 NVMe link and a gen 3. Still, if you are buying new, you might as well get the gen 4. This unit also has a DDR cache on-board (many budget drives don't, and you definitely want the DDR), but at this price, the cache is considered standard. The warranty is also 5 years or 500 TB written. Unless you are mining Chia, this should be plenty, and is good to see. Finally, the only problem that I had with this was using the "Crucial Storage Executive" software. I tried enabling over-provisioning, and it errored out. It recommended that I use Computer Management to resize the active partition. After that, it worked fine. This problem was mildly annoying, but not a big deal. So, overall, the speed is fast, and it does what it is supposed to. if it fails, there is a great warranty to back it up. You really can't ask more than that.

First and foremost... there is a difficulty curve when it comes to installing this SSD if you're looking to replace your current one... if this is a secondary one? Easy install. I opted to get the P5 Plus for the size and price compared to similar SSD. Like most newer PC, mine came with a 256GB SSD and 1TB HD. I wanted to upgrade both for speed and storage. After cloning the current SSD then installing the clone onto the new SSD, I've noticed a difference in boot and load time. This SSD is pretty fast compared to the SSD that came with my OMEN. Upgrading the 1TB to a 4TB 7200rpm gaming HD helped with load time as well. Installation was pretty easy, but the preparation will take some time depending on how much data you're working with. Overall... I will be looking forward to a 2TB+, possibly with a heatsink from Crucial for my PS5 down the line. Thanks.
