The Crucial - X10 Pro 2TB USB-C External SSD - Black arrived in a tidy little box, and inside was a much smaller than I had expected external solid state drive (SSD) some documentation, and a 20gbs USB C cable... that is also very small... So I plugged the ridiculously short USB cable into the drive, then hung the drive from the cable off of the front of my PC because the cable is to short to reach the desktop... (About 8" long) The I followed the instructions provided, and formatted the drive NTFS as recommended and then downloaded some large files onto it from my PC. Everything went like butter, nice and smooth... until I hooked the drive up to my MAC M1.. My MAC could read the files saved from the windows machine, but it couldn't save any files to the drive. So now I'm online trying to troubleshoot. And what I'm finding out is that MAC can't use NTFS without a translation program... the good ones of course cost money. The free ones are slow... which defeats the reason behind this drive. So I reformatted the drive ExFat because the internet said that should work with both my Mac and my PC as well as Android and Linux as well. But it turned out the My Mac didn't like that formatting either. The drive wouldn't show up on my Mac at all unless I used Finder/Drive Utilities, and then I could see the drive, but everything I tried wouldn't let me copy files to or from the drive. SOOOO finally, I reformatted the drive a 3rd time... this time using the formatting tools on the Mac to format to exfat, and this time it took. Now my Mac can read and write the to drive, and so can my PC... My android phone can read the drive but only one file at a time. I'm not sure why yet, but I can't open a file then skip to the next one, say picture or music files for instance. I have to close the file I'm watching or listening to, then go back and open another file instead of just being able to skip to the next track etc... SO now that I finally have the drive working on all 3 of the platforms I need it to work on, I CAN verify, that it is very fast! If plugged into the correct port, using the provided cable, I was able to upload or download files as large as 25 GB in under a minute each from my Mac to my PC, and from my PC back to my Mac... Easily the fastest SSD I've ever used now that I have it all working correctly. Also one of the most frustrating devices I've used as far as making sure it works across my various platforms. The fit and finish, build quality, feel in the hand, small size, and high speed make this the new drive on the block to beat! I highly recommend it if you don't mind fiddling a bit to get it working top notch, once you've get it dialed in it's awesome.

In the box: • Crucial X10 Pro 2TB Portable Solid-State Drive • USC-C to C cable (10 inch) Notably missing from the box was a USB-A to USB-C adapter. However, I would not want to throttle this device with a USB-A port that would largely negate the reason for purchasing the X10 in the first place. Design: The Crucial X10 Pro 2TB Portable Solid-State Drive comes with a surprisingly small form factor (approximately 2.5 x 2.0 x 0.375 inches). There is a small key-ring hole in one corner that has an integrated LED activity indicator light (a nice design improvement). Setup: The X10 Pro mounted seamlessly on my Windows 11 laptop using a USB-C port. The X10 came formatted as exFAT. Benchmarks for mixed read/write case scenarios (see below) were modestly improved (5 to 10%) after formatting to NTFS. Transfer rates: Transfer rates were evaluated using Crystal Disk Mark (v8.0.4, ©2007-2021 hiyohiyo) running on a Dell XPS 15 (9520) with 4 TB internal NVMe KXG70PN84T09 KIOXIA system disk and USB C connection. The system information indicates that USB devices are supported by the Intel(R) USB 3.20 and 3.10 eXtensible Host Controllers. The “Real World” profiles on Crystal Disk Mark were used to read and write files of 1 GB in read-only, write-only, and mixed read-write modes. Transfer rates for X10 Pro were about 40% of those for the internal NVMe drive, a remarkable feat for an external USB-C drive, and 5- to 16-times faster than my external USB-A HDD. Read/write speeds were approximately half of those claimed by Crucial. I tried all three USB-C ports on my laptop and had the same result, even when using the same benchmark software and test settings suggested by Crucial. I can only chalk this up to a difference in port capabilities. Nonetheless, I was mightily impressed by my personal usage scenario (see below). Usage Scenario: I use my computer to process a lot of large photos (60+ MB RAW format) in Lightroom. I copied one of my catalogs to the X10 and went through some typical usage scenarios. The experience was remarkably similar to using my internal NVMe drive. One of the most demanding tasks, building 1:1 previews, was only modestly slower performed against the catalog on the X10 compared to the NVMe drive. Overall: The small form factor is very convenient for travel and the 2 TB capacity makes the X10 great for temporary backup and storage. The X10 Pro is incredibly fast and is a suitable alternative to an internal NVMe drive for tasks requiring heavy I/O.

Tiny device with HUGE capacity and speed

PROS: - Super portable/tiny - High capacity - FAST - No software needed - Works with MacOS, Windows, Linux, Android, iPadOS CONS: - Included USB-C cable is super short == SETUP == I love that I'm not prompted to install some company's software the second I connect a storage device, thank you Crucial! The only thing that's on the SSD when you use it for the first time are some web links to documentation and a PDF for the SSD. Just use the SSD however you want. I primarily work with Windows, so your experience may differ, but I didn't need to format the SSD at all when using between devices. Just another reason that this SSD will help speed things along and have you spending less time waiting around. == PERFORMANCE == There's likely going to be no shortage of people posting screenshots of the read and write speeds using benchmarks, so I prefer real-world uses to evaluate how this SSD performs. My first test was to transfer a 130GB Steam game from my laptop (Ryzen 9 6900HS with Gen 4 SSD) to the X10 Pro. Total time 3 minutes 54 seconds. This was with the laptop plugged in and performance mode. My second test was to transfer that same 130GB folder from the X10 Pro to a handheld PC (Ryzen Z1 Extreme with Gen 4 SSD). Total time was 30 minutes 32 seconds. This was while connected to power and the best result after several attempts. I don't know what the issue is. My final test was to transfer the same 130GB folder from the X10 Pro to a 2023 high-end Android tablet. Total time was 6 minutes 56 seconds. The performance is pretty good, but it's really going to vary based on what you're connecting the X10 Pro to. == BOTTOM LINE == The X10's small size, high capacity, and fast transfer speeds make this a fantastic tool.

Lightning Fast, Compact and Simply Awesome

Go ahead and read the professional reviews and user reviews for actual read/write times - I won't belabor those here for brevity. The only thing you need to know is that this thing is lightning fast. You certainly will not be disappointed in how fast this is. My very current 2023 laptop comes with 2 Thunderbolt 4 ports and a 3.2 Gen 1 port (which is less than the supported 3.2 Gen 2 port of the Crucial X10 pro) so I can get fast transfer sppeds and boy does it show. I haven't purchased an external HDD recently but use them often. This one simply blows my others away. I copy a large amount of data routinely and this HDD is a joy to use since I am an impatient type! You can also stream media quickly without any glitches. Simply awesome. The other awesome thing about this drive is how compact it is. This so small (~2.5 x 2 x 0.5 inches) and incredibly light (less than an ounce and a half!) that I am almost afraid it will get lost! But that is a great thing. It is also IP55 water and dust resistant and if you drop it less than 7.5 it won't really be affected (but admittedly did not test those). It comes with a nice nine inch cable as well. Again you can immerse yourself in the reviews, but you don't need to. Simply put, I believe this is the best external HDD you can buy. When reviewing an item, I do consider cost/value and sometimes I can be tough since some products may be price. But for this guy - not even close - it is worth every penny. BUY IT WITHOUT HESITATION!

Blazing Fast Speeds in a Tiny Package

Portable SSDs have come a long way since their advent. The two biggest way's they have changed over the years is; size and speed. The Crucial X10 provides vast improvements in both of those categories. After unboxing the product, I honestly could not believe how small this thing was! It is no bigger than a credit card, actually a little smaller, fits in the palm of your hand, and can easily be traveled with on the go. This is a great feature for a traveler who needs their files on the go, think a DJ, someone in multimedia who needs all their files, business, maybe you want to put some movies for a plane ride, etc. The speeds on this device are fantastic for a USB C device. I will warn you, to get the maximum speeds you are going to need at least a USB 3.2 header on your motherboard or device, otherwise, it will negotiate the speed down on a slower channel. I have tested on both USB3.2 and an older gen1 type-c connection. The speed is half (about 1100 mbs) on a gen1 connection while a newer connection will yield speeds over 2000mbs write/read. I was able to transfer about 100gb of video files from my onboard NVME SSD to this device in about 2 minutes on a older gen1 connection. If you are in the need for a large capacity portable SSD that will fit in your pocket and provide you with blazing fast speeds for an affordable price, you absolutely need to pick one of these up. Gone are the days of thumb drives, long rein the micro sized SSDs like the Crucial X10.

The Crucial - X10 Pro 2TB USB-C External SSD is an incredible small yet amazingly fast and responsive portable SSD. When I first received the package, I thought there was no way it could possibly contain a 2TB SSD drive as well as the cable that goes with it, but I was wrong. One of the reasons everything is able to fit in the box it was packaged in is the cable that comes with the drive is very short, but the bigger reason is because of the physical size of the drive itself. The extremely short cable may be an issue for some people depending on how you plan on using this drive, but for my purposes, it was fine. The Crucial X10 Pro is really designed with portability in mind. Sure, it is small, but it is also rated IP55 water / dust proof and drop proof up to 7.5 feet. These are important qualities for a portable drive and it was smart for Crucial to include these in the design process. When it comes to performance, the Crucial X10 Pro really excels. One thing to note is that Crucial suggests reformatting the drive to NTFS for maximum performance on Windows systems so make sure you keep this in mind if you are really looking to max out the performance by using this with a port on your PC that uses the USB 3.2 Gen 2 2x2 technology. This is the only way to get close to the max read / write speeds of 2,100 / 2,000 MB/s, respectively. Overall, I am very impressed with the Crucial - X10 Pro 2TB USB-C External SSD and I highly recommend it!

When I first took the X10 Pro out of the box, seeing the tiny size in person made a real impression. It is dwarfed by a Crucial X8 SSD. See the enclosed image with ruler and 1" on-center pegboard for size reference. the lanyard hole is a nice touch, though no lanyard is included with the drive. That's a shame since including a string-style lanyard would have would have cost just pennies. I wouldn't put anything through the lanyard hole other than thin string. The X10 Pro includes a power/activity LED that illuminates the interior of the lanyard hole with white light. This addresses a common complaint about the X6 and X8, neither of which includes any sort of indicator LED, no doubt leading to more than a few instances of cables being unplugged while X6 and X8 drives were still powered and mounted. The Crucial X10 Pro is truly a speed demon, indeed. I tried it under the CrystalMark 7 analytic software and it truly performed consistently above 1037 MB/s in read speeds and above 800 MB write speeds at my USB 3.0 port. Imagine when a full speed USB 3.2 gen port available that it truly will hit the 2,000 MB/s speeds. The SSD device never got too hot, mostly stayed at warm to touch levels, and never throttled.

Fast, roomy SSD with tiny footprint

I am reviewing the Crucial X10 Pro Portable SSD by Micron (CT2000X10PROSSD9 2 TB) In a nutshell, this is a superb portable SSD, with a tiny footprint (2 x 2.5"), tons of space, and excellent speed. I can recommend the hardware without reservation. The supporting software, however, was a mixed bag, some of it proving to be very useful and some not, as I will explain. This is such a new SSD that it was not listed at Crucial's website when I began trying it out several days ago. Fortunately, there was a QR code on the plastic wrapper containing the drive that took me to the page for the X10 Pro where I could complete the product registration. (The drive is now listed on Crucial's home page.) The drive is advertised as supporting read speeds up to 2,100MB/s and write speeds up to 2,000MB/s, but only if your USB is 3.2 Gen 2 2x2. For USB 3.2 Gen 2 non-2x2, the advertised speed is half that, and USB 3.2, 3.1, and 3.0, real-world estimated transfer rate half that again, about 500MB/s. All of my laptops have USB 3.1, so I was delighted when CrystalDiskMark reported a sequential read speed of 1027MB/s and write speed of 896MB/s with the default settings. The built-in Windows WinSAT tool produced very similar results. In real-world terms, when I used the provided Acronis software to back up my entire laptop SSD (390GB), the program ran for 28 minutes to complete the backup, with displayed speeds generally around 1000 Gbps, occasionally peaking up to 2000 Gbps. That works out to 4.3 Gbps, very close to the advertised max transfer rate of up to 5 Gb/s for a USB 3.1 connection. The supporting software for the drive is supposed to be accessible from links on the drive. The links were listed as follows: acronis-back-software adobe-creative-cloud hedge-transfer-software mylio-photo-organizer x10-pro-support-website However, all of these links defaulted to Crucial's home page. To access the software, I had to login to my account and click support from the menu there. I already have Adobe Creative Cloud, so I did not request the 30-day free trial. I could not find the Hedge or Mylio apps. I did download an app called Storage Executive, but this app saw only my laptop's main SSD, not the Crucial SSD. The only software I found to be useful was the Acronis backup software. The free version that accompanies the Crucial SSD is great for making an emergency backup and a rescue USB. However, this will only help restore your system to the same computer. To be able to install the backup to a new computer (in the event of unfixable hardware damage), you will need the paid version of Acronis, which is a subscription. The paid version offers a host of excellent options to protect your data and is therefore worth considering, although Macrium has similar software for a fixed price. I think that the free Acronis software will be enough, and I appreciate its inclusion with the Crucial X10 Pro Portable SSD.

I do a lot of work with large datasets, and I was excited about this portable SSD because of its capacity and advertised speed. The compact physical size was also something that I liked. The first thing I did was to encrypt it with Windows BitLocker, which was fast and easy on a mostly blank device. I tested it on a OSB 2.0 port on my desktop computer and it performed well, though not up to it’s advertised speeds, of course, as that port can’t handle those higher speeds. Next I tried it on my newer HP Spectre x360 laptop’s higher-speed Thunderbolt 3 port. It did perform well on it, but still nowhere near its advertised speeds. I think in order to get the higher speeds that this drive is capable of, you must use it on the latest generation Thunderbolt 3.2 port. Still, it is plenty fast – much faster than any other external hard drive I have used. The speed, combined with the small form factor makes this a great addition to my computer tool bag. My only fear is that it being so small, makes it easier to lose! I gave this 4 out of 5 stars for one reason – the drive is advertised as coming with some software, but it’s all “30 days trials”. Luckily, that trial software was just a set of web links and not actual “bloatware” loaded onto the drive. Other than that minor gripe, this is a good drive and it’s very fast even when used on a port not quite up to its maximum speeds.

    Crucial for Gaming

Coming from a gaming perspective, this external SSD is a first for me and greatly needed for my laptop PC. I've had my laptop for 2 years now and have come to a point where I can no longer install new games, in order to save space for updates to existing games. I have this Crucial x10 Pro connected to my Alienware - m15 R5 Gaming Laptop with AMD Ryzen R7 5800H. The fastest port, and only USB-C, on my PC is a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port. According to Alienware and Crucial, this connectivity allows for 10Gbps max data speeds. If this port on my PC was a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, the speed would be twice as fast. It is what it is and that being said, I do not really notice any difference running a game from my PCs internal drive versus this Crucial drive. I did read in their documentation that the included Crucial USB-C to USB-C cable allows for the potential 20Gbps data speeds and is recommended that you do not use any other cable. Personally, I do not really transport my laptop, except for a special occasion. I have an external mouse, keyboard and monitor connected to it so it's really my "desktop" PC. That being said, the x10 Pro would be very easy to transport if I need to. It is very compact and lightweight, weighing only 1.7 ounces. Overall, the Crucial x10 Pro is an excellent choice for users who need a fast, portable, and durable SSD. It is a bit on the expensive side, compared to other SSDs that offer similar performance, in a maybe slightly larger design. However, you cannot go wrong with this x10 Pro.

Crucial is a brand well known for computer memory and storage. As a writer, photographer, and video content creator, I'm always in need of extra storage for my work and variety of projects. Of course, with cloud storage being something we've grown used to, while this is convenient, I still prefer to have a "hard copy" (or two) just in case. So far, this SSD, fulfills my needs. Saving my precious files was quick and easy because of this Crucial X10 Pro's ultra fast transfer speeds. Being an SSD type storage device, versus a disk drive, I'm more confident what I've saved on it will be more secure with less chance of data loss or file corruption. It is recommended you use the included USB-C cable. This Crucial X10 Pro Portable SSD is dust and water resistant (though I have no plans to test this, however, though accidents do happen). It's also made to be drop "proof" up to 7 1/2 feet. This Crucial X10 Pro is compact and made to be conveniently portable (there's even a handy loop which you can attach a cord, keyring, or thin carabiner to). For those wanting/needing that extra level of security, a 'password protection feature' will be available using the "Crucial Portable SSD Utility" which can be downloaded from their support page come September 2023. I'm hoping this new SSD will help me to better manage (and organize) my documents, photos, and videos. And the 2 TB of storage should be enough to last me a good long while.

Welcome Addition to My Work Gear

I am a graphic designer, which means I work with large image files. This tiny device holds a lot of data – 2TB, and a 4TB device is available – which makes it a great way to take projects to a client’s office or a remote workplace. The programs I use for creating and editing graphics can cause a mediocre storage device to function at a snail’s pace and become very frustrating. However, this Crucial xX10 Pro is also fast. How fast is it? I am using the latest US 3.2 Gen 2 2x2 interface, but I don’t have the expertise to do technical measurements of data transfer rates. I just know that the Crucial X10 pro lets me open and work with those large image files with no noticeable slowdown vs working on one of my desktops. Crucial has promised to make a utility available in September 2023 to enable users to lock/unlock the data with a password and use it on both Windows and Mac computers. I use both, so that will be useful for me. It comes with a 5-year limited warranty, which suggests Crucial believes in its longevity, but I haven’t had it long enough to speak to its actual longevity or durability. Meanwhile, it’s a very welcome addition to my work gear.
