Crucial X10 Pro SSD drive - Compact and Speedy!

This little external drive checks off all the boxes for me, it’s fast, holds a lot and is durable. In the past, I’ve used memory sticks (slow) and traditional external drives, this is my first external SSD drive. I was surprised how this drive is! At 2”x2.5”, this is slightly larger than a set of AirPod pros and smaller than a credit card. Not only is it small, but it’s durable. It is rated at IP55 and is water and dust resistant. It’s also drop resistant up to 7.5’, making it much more durable than traditional drives. With traditional drives, I’m always extra careful when handling them as they have moving parts inside that is definitely not drop resistant.
Speed:
One of the standout features of the X10 Pro SSD is its remarkable read and write speeds. The read/write speed of this drive is rated at 2,100/2,000 MB/s! While this sounds really fast, I wasn’t able to get these speeds in my tests. I formatted the drive using ExFAT format so I can use the drive in both my Mac and Windows laptops. Using the USB-C cable that came with the drive, I plugged it into the USB-C ports thunderbolt 4 ports on my Dell XPS 13” laptop. I copied a 71GB video folder to the desktop (the laptop has a NVMe SSD drive as well). I tried both copying and moving the folder to the Crucial X10, the transfer speed fluctuated between 400-550 MB/s and took about 2 mins 18 seconds to complete. While it did not achieve the. 2,100MB/s, it’s still very fast.
I than ran CrystalDiskMark on the drive to see what the software would benchmark the drive at, the results were 1,072.58 for read and 983.63 for write.
Usability:
After copying the video files to the drive, I was able to play the videos directly from the drive with no issues. This can come in handy when you want to play movies directly from a TV, but you may need a USB- to USB-A adapter. I also copied my photo collection (thousands of photos) to the drive and used Lightroom to manage the library. This took a bit longer as I was copying it from a traditional external drive. I love how the Crucial X10 does not required separate power and is so small compared to the old external drive I was using,
In conclusion, the Crucial X10 SSD drive is a compelling option for anyone seeking a blend of speed, durability, and a compact design. Crucial is a brand that I’m familiar with, I’ve purchased RAM upgrades from them in the past. I’ve already recommended this drive to several friends looking for a small backup drive they can leave in a safety deposit box.

Receiving an error message after 2 weeks. Backed up all my clients files to this when I first got it (500GB data). 1 week later I started getting an error that read: "MacOS can't repair the disk". The problem has persisted and I can't add write to the disk anymore. What a joke.

The Crucial X10 Pro is everything I’ve been looking for in an SSD in 2023. The X10 Pro is lightning fast and surprisingly small, and as an owner of an X6, Crucial has managed to make the X10 even smaller and faster.
It’s designed to be practical, light and to take up the least amount of space possible. The included USB-C cable is short to avoid clutter in the back or on the side of your computer and supports transfer speeds of 20Gb/s.
There’s a little light that comes on when the drive is plugged in and in use. There’s also a hole for a keychain or a lanyard where the light is. The device is dust, sand and water resistant (IP55), drop proof up to 7.5 feet and designed to handle extreme temperatures; making it the perfect drive for traveling. Plus, it comes with a 5-year limited warranty.
This drive offers write speeds up to 2000 MB/s and read speeds up to 2100 MB/s, which is far greater than any external drive that I currently own (my other SSDs are between 500 and a 1000 MB/s). The reason for the upgrade was that my previous drive (from a different manufacturer) would struggle a bit with huge HD video projects in Final Cut, so my first test was to simply copy everything from the old SSD to this one. Slightly less than half a terabyte was transferred from the old one to the X10 Pro, and it took about 25 mins on my Mac Studio, both formatted to APFS. Then I opened the same project on the X10 and wow, the little stutters are gone and everything was much smoother. I could tell the difference immediately. Very impressive!
The device supports USB 3.2 Gen 2 2x2, which allows you to read and write 2TB in roughly 20 mins, if the drive is formatted to NTFS on a modern PC. The cable can be used with a USB Type-A adapter for devices that only support USB Type-A. The adapter is available separately. With USB-C, this drive is essentially compatible with every modern device you’ll want to connect it to, whether it’s a PC, Mac, Android, iPad or Linux. It ships formatted in exFAT, which makes it compatible with most devices right out of the box, but I do recommend formatting the drive to the file system that benefits you the most, for optimal speeds and stability.
I highly recommend this drive to anyone who’s looking for a fast and conveniently sized SSD that’s dust, sand and water resistant. You can’t go wrong with the Crucial X10 Pro!

Made for those with a need for speed

The X-10 Pro is Crucial’s latest and greatest external drive. It and the included 9” cable comply with the USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 standard allowing up to 20 Gbps of data transfer speed. That said, the entire USB naming system has gotten more confusing in the last couple of years, so here’s a synopsis of the current nomenclature and potential data speeds.
USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 / SuperSpeed USB 20Gbps / 20Gbps max speed (USB C connection)
USB 3.2 Gen 2 / SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps / 10Gbps max speed (USB C or A connection)
USB 3.2 Gen 1 / SuperSpeed USB / 5Gbps max speed (USB A connection)
When connected to a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port, the X-10 can reach real-world read/write speeds of around 2000 MB/s. When connected to the much more common USB 3.2 Gen 2, the speed will be around 1000 MB/s, and if you have a 3.2 Gen 1 port (the original USB 3), it’s going to be 500 MB/s. The point is that you are paying for the highest USB speed currently available, but you’ll only realize that speed with the new computers having 2x2 ports. You need to check carefully what ports your computer has if you want to realize the full potential of this drive. My new XPS 8960 desktop has only one 2X2 port, and it’s on the rear panel.
With that out of the way, let’s talk about this little gem of an external drive. The build quality is first-class. It’s solid and built to be rugged. It’s tiny at shy 2” by 2.5” and a quarter inch thick. It’s smaller and lighter than its competitors. There’s a lanyard opening at one corner if you want to tether it to you. It’s made to travel, and even the 9” USB C to C cable is built solidly.
My speed tests confirmed that it reaches the advertised speeds. Besides storage and data transfer, this drive has the speed needed to allow you to process photos and videos on the drive. You can leave those files on the drive and do your work without transferring them back and forth. Keep in mind that the 2000 MB/s speed is dependent on having a fairly new PC, and that you’re running the most current Windows 11 build. If you don’t, you could opt for the less expensive X-9 Pro which is rated at 1000 MB/s. Solid-state storage is a bargain right now, so why not go first class and future-proof yourself with the X-10 Pro? It’s an amazing little drive.

Crucial - X10 Pro 1TB USB-C External SSD - Black
Summary: Spacious, performant, portable, and svelte.
Pros:
* Spacious. This 2 TB external SSD provides ample storage to take with you on the go. It exceeds the size of most manufacturer default configuration SSD internal storage.
* Performant. External SSDs can be tricky because you won't get the performance of internally drives such as NVME SSD. But USB-C 3.2 can get us closer than we've ever been.
* Portable. The portability, and general durability, of this unit is unparalleled for its class: IP55 water/dust proof, 7.5 feet drop-proof, extreme temperature and shock/vibe proof.
* Svelte. The form factor for this drive is unlike anything I've ever seen. It looks sweet. The indicator light is tucked into the key-ring loop. Unless you know what it is, you wouldn't know what it is.
* Brand. Crucial is a household name for SSD in our home. It's a trusted brand and this unit doesn't disappoint.
Special Note:
* Even my latest laptop doesn't feature the newest USB-C 3.2 g2 2x2 standard (Alienware m17 R5). So achieving the maximum performance from this unit will have to wait a tad. In the meantime, I'm a bit future-proofed.
Use:
I use this drive to store some relatively static large documents. But the primary use case is the moving of large video files from devices such as my GoPros, or DSLR cameras and my computing devices such as my desktops and laptops. Though I typically transfer from this device for manipulation and final storage, this allows me to view and edit, transform, and process files directly stored on the device. It's hard not to think of this device as a USB Thumb drive along with the slow poke nature of that type of storage. It is portable, sure, but it is an external hard disk and the capacity and USB-C mean that we have speeds and capacities that blow the old stuff away without lugging around a large device.
Though I use cloud storage for long term archives, these units make storing precious and critical data and keeping it safe/on-hand really easy. Definitely worth the price tag.

Let me start by asking this. Is there anyone there that remebers how amazing Floppy Discs were?
I thougt that using aa external hard drive to get my files around and uploading my from my cameras was the best way to go, considering the limited copacity of my PC. That tends to fill up quickly when uploading hours of footage. And I wasnt wrong. It's great to have that external hard drive. But ever since I recieved the Crucial X10 2 TB external SSD for review, editing has gotten so much faster. No moving parts in the device just helps things transfer so much better. I mean, I knew there'd be a difference, but wow! Not that much. It's like playing with a brandnew phone with no bloatware. Eveerything, just runs anduploads super smoothly. I uploaded 45 minutes of footage in a couple of minutes. It's flipping great! Wait. Lets talk about what comes inside the little bitty box. The only thing in the box is the SSD and a small tranfer cable. That's it. I mean, it's so small that I can hide it in the palm of my hand or even better, I can put it on a key chain and not even weigh anything down. Well, maybe a lil bit, but just don't put it on your car key ring. Remeber that first question I asked at the beginning? This thing is smaller than a 2 MB Floppy disc, by neary 4 times. It's so compct. You are literally carrying 2 gaming laptops of power in the palm of your hand. I highly recommend this SSD to any content creaters out there, or just for people that need to carry and move files on the fly. And I do mean zoom, baby. They were right to go with name they chose. This is very Crucial to my workflow from here on out. Thank you Best Buy and Crucial for allowing me to try this thing out. It's a God sent.

This is a very handy storage device and it is hard to believe that I can easily and safely store 2 TB of data in such a small form factor.
The best feature is the portability. It is extremely lightweight and yet strong, made of anodized aluminum. It claims to be drop-rated at around seven feet, although I am not going to evaluate it by dropping it. It feels solid and I feel comfortable it can take the rigors of being thrown around in my backpack.
The next best feature is the capacity. The fact that I can back up large photo and other files in such a small space makes it ideal for transferring phot files from my GoPro camera, Sony compact mirrorless camera and other computers to help me consolidate and then edit photos.
As for the speed, it is fast enough for me. I did not perform any speed tests or compare it to my other drives, but it transferred files as fast if not faster than my other devices, both internal and external, to which I was transferring large files such as photos in RAW format.
The bottom line is that it does what I need it to do at a very reasonable price point and in a very small size. I do not hesitate to recommend it.

Easily the smallest of my external drives and just as fast as any I put against. This will/has been great for any field work that comes my way. Whether it's in my bag or pocket, it takes up little to no real estate, and if you're not careful, it's very easy to misplace. I've attached a picture to compare with my Samsung portable drive. Easily a quarter size smaller with double the drive space and equivalent speed.
About the speed. It should be noted, if not evident, there are different speed USB-C drives that widely vary in speed, just like the good old standard USB 2/3. I used this drive on my work laptop and nearly gave a negative review based on the transfer speed. But after double checking the specifications, I plugged it into my Gaming PC, and the blazing speeds lived up to it's reputation.
I transferred a 3GB video back and forth and each time took between 3-5 seconds. Impressive considering the speeds I'm normally used to.
Portable power that's sturdy enough to be tossed around. Great drive that lives up to the hype, just make sure you don't misplace it!

Portable Solid State Drives are becoming more and more prevalent as technology improves over time. This SSD is a perfect example of just that. I have been using this drive for about a week now and have been very satisfied with what it has to offer. At a glance, I had initially though that this looks just like all other portable external hard drives but this is not the case. The SSD is small, like very small, about half the size of a playing card which is an awesome discrete feature. The exterior hardshell also gives me comfort that it could take a bump if accidentally dropped, the unit hard and give me no "fragile" feelings.
From the performance side this drive writes and reads at 2100 Mb/sec which causes no delays in backing up my work and having a 2 TB playground to fill up has give me a peace of mind that I will never run our of storage. It also comes with a USB C to USB C mini cord that will keep presentation tidy. This cord and SSD for that matter is compatible with PC, MAC and even gaming consoles.
All in all if you are looking for a compact SSD that is well built and compatible with a variety of devices then I would recommend this product as a great solution to your needs. With its high read and write speed and a whopping 2TB of space this SSD will definitely meet your demands!

Got this to record ProRes video on, straight from my iPhone 16 pro, and hold my other camera footage. Can edit video straight from the drive or transfer it to a computer with some really good speeds. Way faster than my older Samsung T5 drive. Probably the smallest external ssd drives ive ever seen. Has a convenient place in the corner to attach a clip or key chain. Great for video editors or photographers.

Compact and Fast SSD

The Crucial X10 Pro External SSD is a fast drive in a nice compact form that will suit most people. But let’s get one thing out of the way, most people will not see the marketed 2100MB/s (read) & 2000MB/s (write) speeds. To get that, you have to have a computer that supports USB 3.2 Gen2 2x2 Type-C ports. These fast ports are not typically found in mainstream computers. The good news is the drive is backwards compatible with older standards.
In my case, I tested the drive on a 2022 Mac Studio M1 Max and a 2021 Dell XPS 17 9710, neither of which has the port needed to achieve 2Gbp/s speed. I tested them with the drive formatted in ExFAT, APFS, and NFTS using testing software. The differences were minor, though the OS specific formats edged out the cross compatible ExFAT. See attached images for full results, but at a high level:
Mac Studio Results (5 iterations; 1GB data)
- ExFAT Sequential read/write: 806.86MB/s & 787.70MB/s
- APFS Sequential read/write: 1012.17MB/s & 964.23MB/s
Dell XPS Results (5 iteration; 1GB data)
- ExFAT Sequential read/write: 1044.12MB/s & 977.89MB/s
- NTFS Sequential read/write: 1057.40MB/s & 981.04MB/s
Since the Mac Studio is my primary machine, I also did a “real life” test of transferring 283.76GB of photos from the computer to the Crucial SSD, and that took 10 minutes 36 seconds or 446.16MB/s - nowhere near the idealized test case. As the saying goes, your mileage may vary because there are a lot of factors involved.
The SSD got warm but not untouchably hot. What surprised me is it stays warm even if it’s not being used when plugged in. One nice feature on the SSD is there’s a white LED light that indicates when it’s plugged in and turned on. There’s no on/off switch, it just uses port power. But the light helps you know it’s plugged in correctly.
Crucial plans to release free utility software in September that will let you set a password on the drive. The good news is it will be OS-agnostic. The current software Storage Executive that supports other devices is only available on Windows.

Very handy little SSD that can carry a ton of media and it’s FAST! What caught my eye about the X10 Pro was the claim that you can edit directly from the drive so I don’t have to download images and videos onto the native laptop or desktop I’m on. I also don’t have to mess with load times from media to the cloud ect. I can download the media onto the Crucial SSD and then work on projects from my work computer to my home computer to a laptop with ease! I really really love that!!!
I also really like the USB C connection and the overall design of the unit. It’s sleek and cool and on the bottom, it has a rubberized feel to it which prevents it from sliding all around my desk and is easy to keep in hand when manipulating it! It also has a blue indicator light when in use which I like to make sure it’s working ect. Another little touch that I like is it has the 2TB printed easily on it so I know which is which…If you are looking at this unit you probably have a ton of SSD’s and memory devices for all your media and it’s nice to know what is what. I foresee the 4TB version in my future soon.
I also love that it is rugged with dust and water resistance. It's rated for a 7'5" drop and splash proof. But the real deal is the SPEED!!! Fasted little SSD I’ve seen. Keep in mind the speed depend on your computer as well. I dropped 1TB onto it of a Mexico trip and began putting it through some paces. I
plugged it into my laptop and loaded a cloud-based video editing program and started dropping files…. I tried to import the whole 1TB of video into the video editing program at once but that did not go so well. It was just unresponsive. Not sure if it was the video editing program, the laptop or the drive and I did not wait too long to see if it would catch up. Just fyi. But in a real work sense, I was dropping big files in the video editing timeline and hitting play and boom. No lag and no “Windows unresponsive” issues. I threw some text graphics and some transition templates on the videos and no issues all from the SSD HD! I was also able to easily dock, it with my Mac and Windows with ease as well and back again.
Well built, fast, and very portable. It is top-tier and makes my life easier!!! Highly recommend.

I travel often for work and needed a fast, compact, and durable SSD. The Crucial X10 Pro exceeded my expectations. Transfer speeds are blazing fast — large files move in seconds — and the aluminum build feels premium and sturdy. It’s small enough to fit in my pocket, yet has up to 4TB of storage, which means I can keep all my important work files, photos, and videos with me on the go.
I’ve used it across multiple laptops (Windows and Mac) without any issues. The included USB-C cable is great for modern devices, and with an adapter, it works perfectly with older USB-A ports.
If you need a reliable high-speed SSD for backups, editing, or travel, this is the one to get. Worth every penny.

Works as advertised. Compact and fast, which is very nice. Looks sturdy but I had it only for a couple of months. Main reason for my purchase was its small size and speed but the latter depends of course on your particular hardware and port(s). The included cable could be a little longer but it does not pose a problem for me. Since I bought it on sale, it's a good value.

I am rather amazed at this SSD, It's both portable, light, And fastness lightning Unlike many well known brands the cable is of highest standard to give you the best throughput.
I'm a bit shocked but crucial well known for various electronic items has taken a lead in the SSD world in my opinion plus it comes with five year warranty.
I am seriously impressed and that hasn't happened for years now.
