A SMR hard drive seems to be more reliable...

I have tried USB 3 full size on all of them and have tried the direct to USB-C on my 1 year old HP Ryzen 5 laptop. Speeds are inconsistent and not what I expected. It may show 200MB+ to start out -- but will drop to 20-30MB too often when transferring large files. I was looking for numbers of at least 300+ -- consistent -- considering an SSD and USB-C connection. My 5400rpm SMR NAS drive -- in a generic USB adapter -- holds speeds between 180-200MB all the time -- when transferring the same files. In my experience -- this is just as bad if not worse than a regular USB thumb drive -- when operating it on my pc's. It is like a thumb drive on steroids -- with all the fits in between. It is very small and is about the size of 3 thumb drives side-by-side. I also do not like the cable is heavier than the drive itself and too short -- especially if having to connect to the back of of PC. Lastly -- there is no lights to indicate power or activity -- I want to know if it is active -- in some way.
