Stopped working immediately
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Stopped working soon after starting it up and will need to wipe it to see if it will work again, but not a great first use of the product. Never have this issue with lacie drives.

CRUCIAL 2TB
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have 1TB of files in my laptop, You cannot transfer the full 1 TB at one time. Software of external drive would only allow transfer of 100 MB at a time. To backup my laptop files into this external hard drive would have to do it in chunks of 100 MB which obviously would not work for me,

Extremely portable & fast BUT slow when hot
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. At 2.5" L x 2.625" W x 0.5" it is very portable, which a square and flat design that hides away in most shirt and pants pockets without bulging out. It is also very light. I think the best thing about the external SSD's design is that the USB port on it is the standard USB-C. So while the USB-C to USB-A cable is included with the SSD, if you lose it or need a longer cable, you can always replace it with any standard USB-C cable. Keep in mind though that all USB-C cables are not the same, and to get the full speed of the SSD you'll need a USB 3 speed USB-C cable. When used while the SSD is at cool or normal temperature, it is extremely quick for transferring large single files, faster than a lot of comparable SSDs at this price point. When transferring many small files that add up to a large file size, the speed is dramatically slower, like a lot of competing SSDs at this price point but it's not any slower than the competition. This external SSD's biggest flaw is the speed throttling that happens when the SSD becomes warmer (I've never had it become 'hot' although this is probably because the speed throttling never allows it too. I'm almost sure of it.) What this means is that, when the SSD gets really warm, the file transfer speeds become dramatically slower. From 2x to 4x slower; the hotter it gets, the slower it becomes. How it gets hot is through extended use of the SSD over a very short period of time. The good news is, it transfers very quickly. However, if you're using it for backup transfers that are 256GB or larger that can take minutes, this will heat up the SSD and eventually it will slow to a crawl, and the initial 10 minutes you see can end up being over an hour. For less intensive transfers like transferring a large ISO file from one device to another, this SSD is perfect. As advertised, this external SSD works with Android flawlessly as well, provided your device has a file manager installed to browse the data on the SSD. If speeds are slow on the Android device, it's possible that it's your Android device's USB port that's the issue, and may not be capable of the max speed transfers of the SSD because the SSD itself is extremely fast. Summary: Small, lightweight, and extremely fast, the Crucial X6 SE is an excellent travel companion for the casual user, but not ideal for the IT professional transferring large amounts of data constantly over a short period of time. The thermal throttling makes it unreliable for large, lengthy file transferring projects that require timeliness.

Affordable, Compact, Mainstream SSD
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overall: The Crucial X6 is an affordable and very compact portable SSD with speeds that will be plenty fast for the average user. --- Solid-state drives, or SSDs, have become the mainstream choice for computer storage in most laptops and PCs. They're fast, light and extremely reliable, with no moving parts to break. Their performance easily bests what's possible with a spinning hard drive, both internally and externally, and they've come down in price significantly over the past few years. I remember upgrading my laptop to an SSD almost 10 years ago -- SSD prices have gone down by half since then, and performance has likely nearly doubled. Wow! Having moved on from that laptop years ago and now doing all my work on speedy, solid-state-based laptops and tablets, I decided it was time to ditch my old external (spinning) hard disk drives for an external SSD. I store almost all my data in the cloud, but as a casual DSLR photographer I like to keep a physical backup of all my photos and videos, both for safekeeping and to save on cloud storage costs. I have about a decade's worth of photos as well as some video projects from college that have lived on various external HDDs over the years. I was concerned about the reliability of these drives, some of which are 10 years old or older. While speed isn't my top priority, I was finding it took longer than I wanted to load files and/or move things from my computer to my external HDD. Enter the Crucial X6: a portable SSD no larger than a few flash drives, with 2TB of storage compared to the 500GB of my old external HDD. The X6 is advertised as a mainstream consumer device, something straightforward, fast and compact (but maybe not the fastest/most compact/best-of-the-best SSD). For a casual user like me, this device is a great compromise of features and value for the price. Setup is straightforward out of the box: plug the X6 into a USB-C port with the included USB-C to USB-C cable, format it as desired, and load up your files. I chose to format the drive as exFAT rather than the default NTFS, as I wanted to ensure compatibility with both Windows and Mac. After a quick format the drive displayed available space of just over 1.8TB and was ready for use. I appreciate that Crucial doesn't include "bloatware" on the drive, like proprietary backup or security software. The X6 basically functions as a giant flash drive, which again, should be easy for any mainstream consumer to use. To put the drive to the test, I tried copying both my entire photos folder (19.3GB) and then my entire videos folder (3.48GB) from my desktop to the freshly-formatted X6. I also performed the same copy tests with my old external HDD for comparison's sake. These tests were both performed on my Surface Book 2 running Windows 10 Professional, with each drive plugged directly into the computer's USB ports. I was able to copy my entire videos folder to the X6 in 12.9 seconds, versus 36.6 seconds with my old external HDD. Even better, I was able to copy my entire photos folder to the X6 in 2 minutes and 8 seconds, versus 17 minutes with my HDD. Now that's a speed difference! I saw real-time write speeds of 200 MB/s or more with the X6, versus around 60 MB/s with the spinning HDD. Now these are not carefully-instrumented tests with special software -- these are just my real-world experiences with File Explorer on my relatively new-and-fast Windows computer. That being said, I think they give you a good idea of the X6's performance in day-to-day use, rather than a carefully-crafted testing environment. Crucial says the 2TB X6 is capable of read speeds of up to 540 MB/s, but they do not advertise write speeds, which is what I was testing. I can say that browsing folders, opening image files and playing videos was noticeably faster on the X6 when compared to my older external HDD and I am inclined to believe Crucial's advertised speeds. The 4TB version of the X6 as well as Crucial's X8 line all advertise faster speeds, but they also cost significantly more (and in the case of the X8 are also larger in size). I don't have any major negative complaints with the X6 -- it performed solidly from the get-go and offers reliable storage in a very compact form factor. Compared to other top portable SSDs the Crucial advertises slower speeds, but it's less than half the size of many competitors, and at least in my browsing it's also appreciably less expensive. It should be plenty rugged for most users and will certainly withstand travel in a carry-on or briefcase without issue. The included cable is short, but appears durable and offers USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds and compatibility. I appreciate that the X6 uses a standard USB-C port, so if you need a longer cable or lose the one it comes with you can find replacements easily. All told, I think this is a great portable SSD for the price. It's extremely compact, much faster than a portable spinning HDD, and should be extremely reliable for years to come. Sure, you can find faster or more rugged drives, but they'll almost certainly be larger in size and more expensive. The X6 is a great choice for a mainstream consumer and I'm very pleased with it myself.

Small size, huge capacity
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is physically the smallest portable hard drive I have had, yet it holds 2 TB. The size is small enough to fit in a pocket and it is extremely light. While it is supposedly drop-proof from 6 feet, I am not going to try that out. Connecting it to my average laptop via the provided USB-C cable, I am able to get read speeds of just over 400 MB/s and write speeds of about 260 MB/s. I tested it by transferring about 10 GB worth of files at a time. It handled it with no problem. Overall, I am really impressed. It is slightly bigger than about 3 thumb drives side by side, but it performs better than some of my internal SSD's.

Great external SSD for photos and more
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Crucial X6 SE 2TB Portable Solid State Drive comes with a surprisingly small drive enclosure (approximately 2.5 x 2.5 x 0.25 inches). My Windows 10 laptop initially balked when I connected the drive, claiming that it needed to be scanned and repaired. After completing the scan and finding no errors, the disk functioned as expected. The X6 came formatted as exFAT, perhaps for iOS compatibility. I reformatted to NTFS prior to testing transfer rates. Transfer rates: Transfer rates were evaluated using Crystal Disk Mark (v8.0.1, ©2007-2021 hiyohiyo) running on a Dell XPS 15 (9570) with 1 TB internal PC401 NVMe SK hydix system disk and USB C connection (v3.1). Default, Peak Performance, and Real World profiles were used to read and write files of 64 MB and 1 GB in read-only, write-only, and mixed read-write modes. Sequential read speeds were faster than random read speeds for all scenarios tested (about 550 MB/s vs 80 MB/s, respectively). Sequential write speeds were fasted for large files (1 GB at 420 MB/s) than for small files (64 MB at 325 MB/s). In addition, I evaluated my typical use scenario, copying photos between my external and internal disks using Windows 10 File Explorer. I tested the speed using a single folder with 52 subfolders and 6,010 files totaling 176 GB. Files were mostly 61 MB raw image files and 11 KB sidecar files. Using the Real World profile in Crystal Disk Mark with 64 MB file size, sequential read and write speeds for the internal NVMe disk (R: 1445.49 MB/s; W: 1262.4 MB/s) were 3-fold faster than for the X6 (R: 447.99 MB/s; W: 398.46 MB/s) making the X6 was the rate-limiting step in the transfer. Writing to the X6 took 31 minutes (average 94.6 MB/s). Reading from the X6 took 18.25 minutes (160 MB/s). Overall: The small form factor is very convenient for travel and the 2 TB capacity makes the X6 great for temporary backup and storage.

Small size, large data!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am always searching for ways to 'carry' large amounts of data, be it files, photos, videos or databases. I was attracted to the Crucial external drive for a couple of reasons. First, while it is small, it is not tiny like and xD drive or some thumb drives. Secondly, it worked without doing anything but plugging it into my tablet, laptop, desktop,,,,,, you get the idea! Weighs very little and connects with a C usb connector.

Bought for a friend for christmas
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this for a friend as a surprise gift around christmas time. He lost his father this year and had just built his very first gaming PC but skimped on the storage, and I wanted to do something to brighten his year even a little bit. Best Buy shipped and delivered even faster than Amazon and got it to him within a single day completely free. Works like a charm, and he hasn't ran into any issues at all. Completely plug and play, seamless and simple.

Super portable and Very fast
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great external SSD! Super portable with great transfer speeds. Keep in mind that the 800MB/s is for USB 3.2. Using USB-C and USB 3.1 connections, the fastest I saw was 600MB/s which is still very fast.

Portability, versatility and speed
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It’s quite amazing these days that you can get a 2TB capacity of storage in such a small form factor and on top of that you’re getting super speed connection. That’s exactly what external SSD is for. I’ve been using SSD drives for years now in a variety of formats, external and internal drives, and been using a number of different brands. This Crucial drive doesn’t fail to impress me. I like how small the drive is and the fact that it can cram plenty of storage capacity in such a small form factor. I’ve been using external SSD drives to store AAA title PC games so good speed is a priority. This Crucial drive is rated to deliver read and write speeds of up to 540MB/s. There are three things to note before your system can reach this level of performance: First you got to make sure that your PC supports at least USB 3.0. Second, you are connecting the drive to the correct USB port and lastly you are using the supplied cable that comes with the drive. It’s pretty easy to identify USB 3.0 port: either the port is marked with the super speed symbol or it has blue-colored inside connector. If your system doesn’t have the correct port, you won’t be able to experience this high speed connection. It’s preferable to use USB-C or thunderbolt 3 connection so you’ll get the best speed available from your system. I have not tried to drop test the drive but it is very assuring that this drive is rated shock/vibe and extreme temperature proof. There’s a 3 year limited warranty, which can become handy in the future although in my experience it is very rare to see an SSD drive fail to perform because it doesn’t have any moving part unlike traditional Hard Disk Drives. Any SSD drive will eventually fail to perform after reaching the maximum read and write cycles, however, a 3 year warranty means this drive will not likely to fail even when you use the drive daily for years to come. This drive is also useful to store photos from your iPad Pro and the iPad OS has no problem to access files from external SSD. If you have a Macbook or other computers using Mac OS system, you can always format the drive to Mac OS file system. However, if you want it to work on both Mac OS and Windows systems, you need to format it to NTFS file system. Overall, this is an external SSD that is portable, versatile and fast.
