    Mighty Little Portable SSD Drive

The Crucial X9 Pro is a portable external solid-state drive that is beyond compact...it's unexpectly tiny. It's lightweight, has hardware-based encryption, and you can buy it in capacities up to 4TB. It's supposed to IP55-rated for dust and water resistance and drop-proof up to 7.5 feet and shock proof. I didn't test how well it takes drops and hope I never drop it but the fact that's it's supposed to be pretty tough gives me piece of mind. I couldn't find any shortcomings for the X9 Pro, especially comparing it to other external SSDs at this price range. It produced good scores on benchmarks that matched the manufacturer's quoted speeds. It is rated for sequential read and write speeds of up to 1050 MBps. The drive supports USB 3.2 Gen 2, and should be compatible with almost any laptop or desktop computer with a USB-C or USB-A port. I tested the version made to work with Apple products. I used it with my iPads and MacBook. The drive has a nice design with beveled corners, one of which has a hole through which you can string a lanyard. It comes with a pretty good warranty of three years or when you reach the maximum total bytes written (TBW), whichever comes first. The drive doesn't have the super fast Thunderbolt 3 or 4 speeds but I don't use it for videography or anything like that. You pay for capacity and speed and the X9 Pro doesn’t need special hardware to work well or work at all and its sold at a decent price. Overall, I would recommend the Crucial X9 Pro as a very good, very portable, external SSD with a rugged frame, hardware-based encryption, a long warranty, and several capacities and compatible with all your products.

Big, fast SSD with a tiny footprint

Crucial has become synonymous with speed and reliability when it comes to memory and storage, and its latest effort in the X9 Pro for Mac is no exception. Designed for Mac and Apple devices, the Crucial X9 Pro for Mac is ready right out of the box, providing a durable, reliable external drive that gives you all the room you need. The drive is thin, compact, and the epitomy of portable - it's amazing how small these things get nowadays. I really like the feel and design of its casing; it is sturdy and light, with one side a light-gold aluminum material and the other a rubberized texture that is easy to grip. Along the edges, there are small indentations that make it easy to hold as well. The drive has only one USB-C slot, and it comes packed with one short USB-C to USB-C cable. When plugged into a computer port and when in use, a small indicator light comes on, but otherwise the X9 Pro for Mac is mostly inconspicuous in your workspace. Finally, it has a small lanyard hole on the corner to maximize its portability. At 2TB in capacity, the X9 Pro for Mac has more than enough room for your personal files, pictures, and videos. And as an SSD (Solid-State Drive), it is more durable than hard disk drives whose insides have moving parts. Plugged into a MacBook, it runs immediately and its folder appears almost instantaneously on the screen. Moving files into the folder is quick and effortless, and even the biggest video files go super fast. This drive is targeted for Apple consumers specifically, but the drive will work on a PC when reformatted (although there is an X9 Pro for PC users as well). Overall, the X9 Pro for Mac is a big SSD with a small footprint, offering Apple users a fast, reliable external storage option with enough room to quickly transfer the biggest files. It is a high quality product that is easy to recommend.

    Perfect On-the-Go Solution

Now that all my Apple products have USB-C connections, I needed something that I could easily and safely bounce around with between home, the office, and on the road. This little beast is the perfect on-the-go solution for anyone with Apple gear. Here are a few things I've noticed while using it: First, because it's a SSD, this thing is totally silent. I've moved larger media project files between my iPad and MacBook Pro. There's impressive read-write speeds also, which makes working with beefier files much less of a hassle. Second, right out of the box, the drive is formatted with APFS. This means it worked right out of the box with my MacBook Pro and iPad Pro. It was really cool to see a drive that works out of the box, without any special reformatting required, or the pop up saying that I can't use the drive because it's drawing too much power. I plugged it into my iPad Pro and it immediatly showed up in the Files app. Third, I've also used this as a Time Machine device to create local backups of my MacBook Pro instead of relying on iCloud Backups. I have no issue with iCloud as a backup service, and haven't had any issues in the past, but I was curious to see how this would perform as a local backup option. It's small and discrete and I'm able to connect it and keep it out of the way. Crucial also throws in some feebies to try out, for example, there's a 1-month trial membership to Adobe to try out some of their creative apps.

I’ve been trying to move my files from traditional Western Digital [spinning/mechanical] drives over to SSDs due to the higher failure rate after suffering multiple losses. The first thing that blew my mind about this Micron/Crucial drive is the size. I have a Post-It pad on my desk and it’s literally smaller than my Post-It pad. It’s also made of aluminum enclosure that’s light weight, yet substantial-feeling. I’m not the biggest fan of the gold-ish finish and wish they offered it in different finishes (like a Space Gray, Silver or Space Black) but the color is a minor concern as it has nothing to do with the capability or performance of the drive, respectfully - it’s more of a just a “would’ve been nice.” The drive comes with a USB-C to USB-C cable, but it does not include a USB-C to USB-A cable. This may not be important to many, but considering Apple spent their last keynote courting Intel users, it suggests there’s many people out there with older Macs (myself included) that may have models that pre-date the USB-C transition and unfortunately - this is more of a hinderance for those of us that have hung onto legacy devices as you’re likely going to have to purchase a separate cable unless you happen to have one. Fortunately, I’ve purchased other brands of SSDs previously that have included this cable so I have a spare or two. It’s nice that this drive is pre-formatted to support Apple devices. It makes it truly plug and play for Mac, iPhone and iPad with USB-C connectivity support. Full transparency, I did not test this out with my iPhone or iPad as I have plenty of storage space on both of those devices and both backup to iCloud so I wasn’t as worried about backing up that data as I was salvaging what I can off of my Intel Mac’s external SSDs. Also nice, is the included 5-year warranty which fortunately I have NOT had the need to test out. The performance on this drive was so impressive that I ended up purchasing the model up X10 Pro in a 4TB to transition one of my oldest traditional hard drives onto so I can fully be on SSDs. Historically I’ve had much better luck with these not failing on me and even with large files like movies or folders with many larger Office files, it does what would take about 30 minutes on a traditional/mechanical drive in around 5 minutes (if that). Micron has also been around forever so I know it’s a reliable brand especially when it comes to memory/storage products. A true winner in my book and I would/could easily recommend this in a heartbeat to someone looking for an easy-to-use and reliable option for backing up their Mac or sharing files between Mac/iPad/iPhone 15.

    Fast and Compact Storage

There isn't a terrible amount to say about the Crucial X9 Pro for Mac. It's fast, compact, and well built. I benched it on my MacBook Pro M3 Max at 940mb/s read/write. Pretty close to the rated specs from Crucial. It is well built and has a nice rubberized bottom to keep it from sliding around. It is water and dust resistant, but I haven't really put that to the test. Additionally, the keychain cutout in the corner is also the activity light for the drive so that is a nice touch. The drive comes with a very short (<6") USB-C cable which based on the intended purpose should be fine. Crucial is a reliable brand and I expect it will have a good, long life. The only reason this is 'for Mac' is that it is formatted in APFS, but could easily be reformatted to work with PC. Don't let that stop you from getting it if you are on a PC. Overall it is exactly what it is, 2TB of additional, fast storage that is very portable and durable. Easy recommend if you are in the market for more speed and durability than a basic thumb drive.

Huge amount of storage that is password protected. Fast speeds. Easy to use. Dust and splash resistant. It does get warm after a decent amount of use, but has not overheated. Plug and play capability. Small convenient size, easily transportable. The cable that comes with it is very short, which usually isn't a problem. Pretty durable since I have accidentally dropped it and it still works great. It is resilient to interruptions such as the plug getting disconnected half way through download. Overall, large storage space in a compact size and decent value for what you get. No complaints. Great for videos and images. Transfer speeds are solid and data is clear. Gives a sense of security that your digital content is secure for you to get back to later. There are times where you may need a different cable, but when is that not true in this day and age. A great option to have a backup for your files. Easy to use, convenient size and fairly durable. Decent quality with no issues to complain about.

The Crucial X9 Pro for Mac Portable SSD is quite impressive. The physical size of the device alone is astounding, especially for the amount of data it can store. It is small enough to fit in your pocket without making it obvious that it is there. It even boasts a hole in the top corner making it convenient to carry on a keychain if that is something you desire, though doing so may become awkward if you choose to have it ready at all times since it requires an external cable so it can be attached to your desired computing device. It comes with a USB-C cable that is about 8 inches long. Crucial does note that they have created the supplied cable specific for the X9 Pro for Mac and encourage to always use it over a cable from a different manufacturer. They advertise that it is capable of reading and writing at speeds up to 1050MB/s. To test these claims, I used the application Amorphous Disk Mark with a 2017 Mac equipped with a 2.3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 processor. A sequential read/write test resulted in a read speed of 1032MB/s and a write speed of 900 MB/s. Running the application multiple times generated similar results, so the claims are valid. I compared the X9Pro’s performance to a 1TB SSD using USB 3.0 that is about 10 years old. The older hard drive generated a read speed of 64MB/s and write speed of 45MB/s. To further test, I began transferring files from my Mac to the X9 Pro and used a stopwatch to roughly estimate transfer speeds. I started with a folder that contains about 1GB worth of data which completed in about 12 seconds. Another transfer of about 25GB took just over 4 minutes. Comparatively, I copied the same data to my older hard drive resulting in transfers that took 30 seconds and 6 minutes respectively. I also tested the claims that the cable that is specific for the Crucial X9 Pro for Mac Portable SSD is necessary to reach the claimed transfer speeds. To do so, I switched out the supplied cable for the one that came with my Apple iPhone 15 Pro, which is only rated for USB 2.0 speeds. Amorphous Disk Mark reported a read speed of 43MB/s and a write speed of 41MB/s. Using the same data to copy files from my Mac to the X9 Pro I tested the transfer times with the USB-C cable that came with my iPhone. The 1 GB transfer took about 32 seconds and the 25GB transfer took about 11 minutes. Another exciting feature if you are a user of an iPhone 15 model, you now have the capability of saving and recording to external USB-C drives as long as the format is compatible. The Crucial X9 Pro for Mac Portable SSD comes compatible with iOS out of the box and I was able to transfer 300 photos in a matter of seconds.

After years of utilizing such external storage devices as SD cards and flash drives and portable hard drives, this external SSD is a breath of fresh air. It is so light and tiny but at the same time rugged and extremely useful in that it can hold so much--and the transfer speeds are so fast, just lightning fast. I used it first with my iMac and MacBook and it was so easy--I just used the included USB-C cable to connect it and Voila!, my iMac and MacBook instantly recognized it. For one example, I transferred over 8,000 pictures and videos at one time, literally in minutes. I connected the Crucial X9 Pro to my iMac, then copied/selected all my pictures and videos (that I had stored on my iMac), and then simply pasted them into a folder I created on the Crucial X9 Pro. In mere minutes they were all copied onto the Crucial X9 Pro, safe and sound. The golden rule is to keep at least three copies minimum of all your important stuff--for my pictures/videos and important documents, I have them stored on two different cloud storage services, and on a portable hard drive...and now on the Crucial X9 Pro as well. It's so small and convenient, yet also durable and able to withstand more than any ol' plasticky SD card or flash drive. It is perfect for on-the-go professions too because it's so portable and because it has such fast transfer speeds.

Overview: The Crucial X9 Pro 2TB External SSD for Mac is a must have in external storage, offering seamless integration with the Apple ecosystem. From its surprisingly compact design to its lightning-fast performance, it's a perfect fit for users like myself in handling design and photography tasks across multiple Mac devices. Pros: + Impressive speed: Clocks in at around 900MB/sec, making everyday workflows, including photo editing and backups, exceptionally fast. + Compact design: Small, squared-off form factor (65 x 50 mm) with an anodized aluminum case. + Lightweight: The SSD itself is super lightweight, comparable to the old thumb drives. Perfect for work and travel! + Plug-and-play simplicity: Effortless setup with MacOS recognizing the drive instantly; formatted for APFS, ensuring compatibility. Use it for Macs, iPads, and iPhones! + Efficient backups: Ideal for Time Machine backups, offering a seamless out-of-the-box experience for Mac users. + Inclusive extras: Comes with a short, but sufficient, USB-C to USB-C cable and offers a one-month free trial of Adobe Creative Cloud All Apps plan. + High-speed connectivity: With read and write speeds up to 1050MB/s and a 10GB/s transfer rate using the supplied USB-C cable. + Durable construction: Drop, dust, and water-resistant, providing reliability in various conditions. Cons: - Limited cable length: The included USB-C cable might be considered short by some users, but it serves its purpose effectively. Again it's so light that it just dangles in the air without dragging the cable. - Speed variance on different Apple devices: Speeds may vary between x86 (Intel-based) and Apple Silicone (M1/M2/M3) devices (no surprise here). Conclusion: The Crucial X9 Pro for Mac is a top-tier external SSD, providing unmatched speed, durability, and seamless integration with the Apple ecosystem. Its compact design and impressive performance make it an excellent choice for users engaged in design, photography, and day-to-day computing across multiple Mac devices. Crucial X9 Pro 2TB External USB-C SSD is an ultra fast hard drive. I record a lot of video from my iPad pro. And it’s important to have plenty of space to store my content. This is a welcome adding addition to the Mac OS. Videos and photos can take up plenty of space on your Mac device. Crucial allows you with this hard drive. You have maximum write speeds, so you’re able to edit right from the SSD hard drive with no lag in performance. With read speeds of 1,050 MB/s and writ speeds 1,050 MB/s, you can save and edit the highest resolution media in a breeze. And with a small and compact design you can take it with you on the go everywhere. The drive requires a newer Mac device and iPhone or iPad or Mac with USB-C. USB-C is the new standard for the max transfer rate of media. But most of the newer Mac lineup does support USBC. And it works with a wide selection of apps such as Adobe Mylio photos and even Apple File vault. The speeds are fast and you will love the performance. This is definitely one to check out.

Wow! Is this thing small. It’s probably 2 inches by 2 inches and mostly light (documentation says 38 grams). This is great since it fits anywhere but also prime to loss. Make sure to keep it secure. It does have a lanyard hole but from what I could see no lanyard. It’s also solidly built out of metal and will handle drops and shock. Setup on a 2023 m3 Max MacBook Pro was incredibly easy. Simply plug it in and away you go. The included cable is around a foot long but allows for fast data transfer. Doing a 200GB Time Capsule backup finished in less than 10 minutes. The transfer speed is around 1000 MB/s and it shows. I tried it on a 2023 M2 MacBook Air and had similar results. I also moved many individual files from one MacBook to another and the process was quick and easy. Moving videos was the same as well. You also get one month of Adobe Creative Cloud for Mac once you register the device. It was good to see what this application could do. I am very impressed with this drive. Pocket sized and speedy I would recommend this to a friend.

I had been researching different external memory (USB) drives. I have been in the Mac/Apple stratosphere since Apple came out w/ the iPhone, and due that I have acquired a lot of media over the years, pictures/videos, etc. And since I had so much that I wanted to keep and most are of family that have gone on to the Lord, I cherish a lot of that media. The problem was every time that I upgraded either my phone or iPad I had to purchase a device that had enough memory to accommodate all of that media, which can be very expensive. Once I received this I was thrilled w/ the simplicity of attaching it to my Mac and laptop and then it was simply taking everything that I wanted to save on the Crucial - X9 Pro for Mac. I literally put almost 12 years of media on this external “hard drive” and I am nowhere near having this filled up. Setup is so simple as I attached the USB-C into my Mac and followed the prompts and w/ in no time I had transferred practically all of my media onto this storage. If you are looking for a very simply but very reliable external memory, I highly recommend the Crucial X9 Pro.
