Customers are saying

Customers recognize the HD Wi-Fi Camera's excellent camera quality, ease of use, and effective night vision as significant strengths. Many also appreciate its reasonable price and wide field of view, although some experienced difficulties with initial setup and occasional connectivity problems. A few users mentioned challenges with the app and the need to purchase an SD card separately. Overall, the positive feedback on image quality and usability outweighs the reported issues with setup and connectivity.

I originally tried the less expensive camera in the D-Link line...the 933L and this one is much better IMO. I didn't think a few dollars more would make SUCH a difference but it REALLY does. This camera has micro sd card storage and recording. The picture is so good you don't even need to put it on night vision if there is some kind of a light source. What I mean by this is I am using it specifically on the inside of my window facing out at my door and porch area outside. I have it set to record on motion detection and even though the camera is inside, it still picks up everything going on outside. The other camera did not do that as well. This camera also has a fabulous view area. I can get bottom to top and pretty much my entire porch and I am so happy about that fact. This camera is a tiny one that packs a punch IMO! This is one of those times that the cheapest one didn't work for me and the few bucks more really paid off. Definitely worth checking out!

The set up for the camera was fairly simple and the picture quality is awesome. The biggest problem I have with the DCS-936L is that it disconnects after a few hours when I have the micro sd card in the camera. The camera overheats and I have to unplug it, let it cool down, plug it back in and, more often than not, I have to reconnect it to the WiFi. Without the sd card I have no issues with connectivity. I also have no means of reviewing the footage. I am not the only one with this issue and it seems to be a common problem with other models as well. Do yourself a favour, pay a little more for a better camera.

I was able to get this camera hooked to my network without even downloading an app or the web interface, it was that easy (but you have to know a bit about how the newer cams work, I learned on an Arlo Q 3 days ago, lol). I was able to use just my initials (and my throwaway email addy) to sign up for an account, a plus in my book. I don't like to use my real info to sign up till I know I am going to keep a piece of tech. And I did not verify my email, you have 5 days to do so. I just kept dismissing the nag screen.... Dlink software for the web interface for the cam advanced settings is for the nerdiest nerds who are familiar with the dlink router interfaces of old. And downloading the manual is via FTP so there's that hurdle if you aren't that techy (I use firefox with FireFTP plugin). But enough about that.... It has audio!!!! And a crystal clear 720p image! The 'mydlink lite' phone app for android is very easy to use but be warned that to have it record to a (not supplied) SD card requires you to update the firmware before the SD card format command will work. I found that I had to reboot the device afterwards too, to finally get the format to complete. You have to let the cam do the format, not a computer. The web interface (which you can access by reading the manual (download from dlink FTP site) has a lotta techy goodies (settings) to satisfy your inner nerd (if you know what you are doing). Be aware tho, the login window can get hidden behind your Internet Explorer window and you'll think you are stalled, just look for the second browser tab/window. That is the only downside, the windows web management interface login does not work on firefox and I refuse to use edge.... took me awhile to see it. The only other slight con I have is that the phone app uses your default notification sound, mine is very loud and when it goes off for an event I think I am getting a text or an email. The Arlo Q allows you to choose a different sound so I have the quieter 'Bubbles' set for it. Except for those couple of non-intuitive things, for the money this cam is "A Best Buy" for the price. You just have to know what you are doing for the more advanced stuff. I still gave it 5 stars. Please understand tho, your recordings are not in a cloud, you are actually accessing the cam itself (and the recordings on the SD card) either locally or remotely via the net when you sign into the app, so when the card gets full you start over or stop recording. (No rolling cloud storage and 128 gb SD card size limit.) That is the reason for having all of the advanced settings, so someone cannot discover your cam and worm their way into your home network. I did not want to get that detailed just to trial the cam.

good quality daytime video after setup

The camera had setup problems while trying to use the Android app. The iPhone app worked flawless for setup. This camera, with a micro-sd card, will record audio and video constantly, or when detecting a certain level of sound or motion. It will provide a constant live feed to the DLink lite app. During the day, the camera detects and records motion well, but at night/low light, anything more than about 10 feet away will not trigger a recorded event. This would be a great camera to set up in a kid's room, or for a pet, so that you can remotely view the live video. It is not the best option for a security camera.

Works fairly well, but a few issues...

I have a few of these. Overall a good product for the price. First issue is with the app. If you can't access live view, you can't access anything else. The bigger issue is that one of mine keeps killing sd cards. Not just an error, but completely dead. I've had to replace 2, 128GB SD cards so far... in about 2 months. And when the card dies, so does the ability to connect to the camera (need to pull card and reset). So, at this point I'm batting about 50%. I need one more camera... We'll see if my percentages increase. Would I recommend, perhaps, but with qualification.

This camera is not worth the trouble

When I purchased this camera I went to set it up, and found this to be a very counter-intuitive process. When I thought I was finished setting up the camera it was not recording anything to the SD card. So in order to get it to record to the SD card you first have to go through a long tedious process on your phone, then once that is done you have to jump onto your computer and go to mydlink.com and create an account there. Then it will take you to a screen where you can see some additional settings for the camera that you cannot see from the app on your phone. At the bottom of the settings page there is a link that says advanced settings, which will take you to the ip address associated with the camera. Now this part was very frustrating because it will tell you that you need to install a plugin, but on my many attempts I was not able to install the plugin. I tried on Firefox and after countless tries to get the plugin installed I finally was able to get to the advanced settings screen. Now you will see a tab that says SD recording. You click that and you have the option to choose record all the time, or record based on motion detection. I chose to record all the time. Another option is how many minutes each video will be. The only options you have are 1, 2 or 3 minutes. So I chose 3 since that was the largest I could choose. So I finally get it all set up and it is actually recording. The video quality however is not great by any stretch of the imagination. So after a week or so I wanted to go back a few days on the video and see which one of my cats peed on the couch, sounds like a simple thing to do right? Wrong. Since I don't know the exact time that she peed on the couch I have to open up over 400 different video files and scroll through each one at the blazing speed of a snails pace (on the phone app or in the browser on my computer) so in order to find what I was looking for I would have to spend countless hours scrubbing through hundreds of videos. While looking through these videos I noticed that I would have between 5-15 second gaps where the video freezes on one frame and did not capture anything. Not sure how that is going to help me. So at this point I decide to give up and realize that if Im going to catch something on the video I would need to know within the hour of when the incident happened which means I would only have to scrub through 20 videos. So the next time I want to look back at the videos I pull up the app on my phone only to find that the app can no longer connect to the camera. I tried unplugging the camera and plugging it back in. I tried resetting the router, I even restarted my phone, but no dice. So I went through the long grueling process of setting up the camera from scratch again. After finally getting it set up again, I go to check the videos and guess what? The camera hadn't captured any video in about 4 days!! Very frustrated that once again my camera did me no good at all. Since that day I started checking my app more often and upon doing so I realized that the camera went offline about every 1-2 weeks requiring a complete set up from scratch. So not only does it capture very poor quality video that often freezes on one frame for 5-15 seconds, but also it will not stay online for more than a week or two and will need to be set up again from scratch. I thought maybe my router was the problem, so I went and purchased a new router. Still does the same thing. Very disappointed in this camera and do not recommend it to anyone. I would give it negative 5 stars if that was an option. Please save yourself some time, money and frustration and do not buy this camera.

This camera was perfect for monitoring my home.

I set up this camera after my house was broken into. It is set up so that it will monitor my front and back door at the same time. It was super easy to set up and got it installed and working in less than 30 minutes. It does need an SD card in order to save any recordings and it needs to be close to power. The motion detection works great but if you have any animals they will easily set it off and constantly have you pulling up the app on your phone. The app is easy to install and navigate and overall I couldn't be happier with the product.

Would be 5 star review if not for a minor motion sensing flaw. Seems the camera refocuses or adjusts from time to time and triggers a false motion sensing alert. Now for the good stuff. Very good video quality. Sound alert is great. App is easy to use and works great. Love the web browser access. Push notification with the app works great. A nice amount of settings with the advanced settings option. Love the video clips that can be sent to email. Like the local storage. No monthly fees. All in all a great camera that I can recommend for the money.

Great camera if you can live with false detections

I love the size and convenience of this camera, and the picture on my PC or phone is super in HD mode and not bad at 480P. Coverage is great and curvature is barely noticeable. I would highly recommend it except for the plethora of false alarms on motion detection. I have two cameras, both facing outdoors. At first I thought I was getting motion detection alarms due to sunlight and shadows. I reduced sensitivity several times all the way down to 4% (and could not pick up real motion) yet the alarms still came. It seems that the camera or camera software occasionally adjusts contrast or backlighting settings and the alarms are generated by that process. So if you are not planning on using it to detect motion, it's a great camera and VERY easy to set up even though you need a cell phone app to do so.

I got this camera and really wanted the notifications to come through my phone when there was movement. Well I have only had it for two days and yesterday the push notifications worked for a little while and now its not working anymore. Not sure why. I even was on the phone with technical support to get it set up in the very beginning. I really wish my phone notifications would work.

Decent Camera, Difficult For Average Consumers

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased this product because of the affordable price point. It's a good cam with decent resolution and a fairly reliable GUI once it's up and running. The motion detection does not pick-up my small pet running around which is a good thing for me, I would prefer it not to but I think for some people they may find this as a negative. Another thing is, out of the box this camera needed firmware updates and configurations from the D-Link website which in my opinion would not be easy to perform for the average consumer. Initially it could not playback content from the memory card until configured from the D-Link Portal. The biggest negative of this camera is the incredibly short power cable. It seems to be only about 3 ft. This is not ideal for running up a wall or installing high-up. I had to purchase a 10ft insignia micro USB cable and USB charger to use as an alternative means to power the camera and mount it at the top corner of my ceiling. If you are serious about security and have some tech-know how it's great, otherwise could be a potential nightmare for an otherwise unsuspecting average consumer.

I really like these cameras. Easy to set up via Wi-Fi. All the settings worked just fine. I am now 800 miles away and able to see the cameras just fine. So what's the issue? I need to change the settings. I can't. I am on fast internet but that doesn't help. You can't use Microsoft Edge, as it just won't accept it. Then I use Internet Explorer and get a message about the certificate. Then i use Chrome and similar problems. Then i try to change the settings and nothing. I have been trying for days. So, you need to make sure the settings are ok prior to leaving. I am able to set everything ;up while on the same network.
