Hard to believe a 2 TB external drive that stopped responding was going to cost 1,500 to retrieve data- without a guarantee. Geek is proud of themselves- my fault for not backing up properly but be ware this has turned into a racket and you are hostage to thier exagerated pricing.

Hi DALLAS75235 – Data recovery is a very complicated, and consequently expensive, service. It sounds like your hard drive may have some physical issues, or severe file system issues, which would require a Level 3 data recovery. Please reach back out to your local store or call us at 1-800-GEEKSQUAD (1-800-433-5778) to discuss what that Level 3 service entails.

Can't imagine they couldn't recover any data from a drive that did not appear to be damaged.

      Hi Brian –

Data loss is one worst, and regrettably most common maladies associated with technology. There are a wide variety of causes, not all of which are visible without opening up a piece of hardware. That said we’re sorry to hear that we were unable to recover your data, and thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us.

I took my old college computer in to Geek Squad to try and recover the data. The initial meeting in store was ok, although they were a little slow and disorganized. They had to send the hard drive away to Geek Squad (out of store) which was fine by me. I wound up declining to fix my hard drive in the end though - it would have cost over $1,300!!! So they sent my hard drive back to the store, and I literally had one of the worst experiences when I went to pick it back up. It was right when they first opened (10 AM, on a Friday) and everyone was just hanging out in the back (including managers). Took over 40 minutes just to get a refund. Not cool at all.

Data recovery had to be sent to leveln1 now level 2. This was disappointing since the agent felt about 95% certain they would obtain data at level 1 as he could see my data. It has gone to level 2.

I have no quarrel with how things were explained EXCEPT no one explained that they are not able to test AOL email after recovery. In other words, while they can recover, they cannot test to see what shape the recovered AOL material is in. This is disappointing and was not explained to me at the beginning fo the process but rather at the end,

After $99 for a 'diagnostic/analysis' fee on my failed HD (which lets face it, they hook it up to a machine that does all the work), another $150 towards 'Tier 1' data recovery, three weeks later, they 'recovered' only about 65 GB of data out of 200+ GB on my HD. A more in depth 'Tier 2' data recovery option would have cost an additional $300 with no promises. 'Tier 3' would cost $500-800 or more. Frankly, I felt it was a huge rip off / financial risk for poor results. Not to mention, who even knows if they're telling you the truth or just trying to get you to spend a fortune in recovery fees.

Data Retrieval and Hard Drive Replacement

Initially, I brought my laptop to BB because my hard drive died. I wanted it replaced -- as it was still under the year warranty. Turns out, my data had to be retrieved at a significant price. And, then - when I heard from Best Buy that my laptop was ready for me to pick up...I go to the store, only to find out that the hard drive had NOT been replaced.. So...off it went ...back to the shop -- out in Tennessee or somewhere. DAH! THe process was not handle well at all. It is taking a LONG time to get my laptop back. I'm expecting it sometime next week.... but as I've lost faith in Best Buy... who knows when I'll actually get it back.
