But it WAS strangely addictive and beautiful, just really, really weird. Buy it on sale if you can.

I can see how it's brilliant and boring

Death Stranding's core gameplay loop is about delivering packages across large distances, with most new unlocks in the game giving you ways to make that easier (vehicles, carriers, bionics legs, etc.). There is some combat, but it's fairly simple, and it's only going to compose a small percentage of your total playtime. The game is strangely zen, so if you want something to help you chill out between more violent games, I can still recommend this quite a bit. But if that doesn't sound appealing, you might want to look somewhere else.
