Definitive Technology ProSub 1000 home run!

This is one outstanding subwoofer! Read the spec's: Ultra Pure Copper, triple insulations, Space age and military spec glass and epoxys, stupendous power, non-resonant cabinet, it goes on and on... These many attributes add up to an incredible sub-bass machine!! It also comes with an industry best 5 years warranty for driver and amp! We bought this to replace a modest, but good 180w Sony which blew after 6 years service. I have not been disappointed. These folks are serious about technology and deliver on performance. Doubt me? Take a blu ray Jurassic Park Lost World and move it to chapter 5 and play through 1:06! You will think you have a 6-8 ton Tyrannasorus in your room. We have a moderately large 20-22+ den and this sub fills the room with extremely low LFE material. If you have a good to excellent surround system, then you will be delighted with this unit's performance, both with movies AND with audio. Your stereo will love this sub, and especially recent soundtracks and CDs will benefit from this superior device. One reviewer complained about the cabinet but the cabinet is non resonant monocoque design. It cannot buzz or rattle. If you hear that, then you have a door or piece of furniture resonating with the Prosub 1000. As I said, it does need a bit of tweaking, because the power can get out of hand if not set properly. Use the EQ/filter and you will probably not need to turn the volume over 40-50%. Also, note, I discovered the driver takes a good 12-18 hours of use to break in. The first hours can sound brittle and harsh or perhaps overly stiff, but that rapidly fades with use. After 20 hours of use, this sub sounds like heaven, starting at 18 cycles per second. The Prosub 1000 is outstanding, IMHO and you will be amazed at how this subwoofer can compliment your surround system. We use 12" woofer 3 way surround speakers, but I am sure quality 5's and 6 towers will work fine. I never had any idea our surround could sound so superbly... The Prosub 1000 has a lot to do with that. I would heartily recommend this to a friend.

Product did what it was supposed to do. not sure if it was better than a less expensive product by other manufacturers. Did not come with necessary cables to connect to sound system.

This subwoofer had problems from the moment it was installed. It would turn off and on by it self while watching tv. Best Buy was great and replaced it with a better model.

Well rounded sub, but better for movies than music

Overview: Definitive Technologies is generally regarded as the speaker brand for home theater crowd rather than the audiophiles (those who listen to primarily music). While the speakers generally sound very good with music, they are stellar for movies- especially the action kind. This subwoofer is no different. The ProSub line is Def Tech's "entry" level line of subwoofers (and the ProSub 1000 is at the top), but the construction is top notch. Don't get me wrong, nobody will ever confuse it for a $1000 REL, Bowers & Wilkins, or Martin Logan, but at the same time, it FEELS high quality. It's also pretty heavy- which is a good thing. The finish is matte black, which isn't very exciting- but it also won't pick up finger prints when it's touched. As with any speaker, a proper break-in is REQUIRED to get the best performance. Don't go home, plug it up, and just blast away- it needs a few days of low volume listening. This will dramatically increase the life of the sub and give you the best output. Now for the sound quality: Musically the sub has quite a bit of range. I listened to several different types of music (from Ludacris to Enya) and the sub did a good job overall. Like I said, however, it's in movies where it really shines. Gunshots are not only heard, they are FELT. Explosions will shake the room (and in my case, brought complaints from neighbors). This is by far the best sub I've experienced for movies (easily better than my $1500 Bowers and Wilkins). Playing Call of Duty Black Ops was a thrill- every gunshot and thrown grenade was a heart-thumping experience. At $500 this is a solid pick for any home theater, however, if you're listening to music 100% of the time, then a Martin Logan or B&W (or even Def Tech's SuperCube line) will be a better fit. Pros: -VOLUME CONTROL IS ON THE SIDE!! This is a huge bonus- not having to reach behind the sub to turn the volume down is a big help! -Movies and Games sound incredible, heart thumping, wall rattling sound -Excellent Build Quality Cons: -Good, but not great for music -Boring design

I visited Magnolia to check out this sub against the Energy 10" as well as the Pro800 (8" sub) from DT. Hands down this sub won it for me. Nice rich sound and plenty of power you can hear and feel. I only have it turned up about 1/3 of the way in my home, hooked up to a Denon receiver which sounds great. I do wish the price was lower but I've learned that you get what you pay for. Great build quality as well & not a huge footprint. I also like the volume control located on the side of the sub for easy access. I bought this sub primarily for movie watching. I plan on upgrading the rest of my surround system to Definitive Tech, purchasing the Pro1000 monitors & Pro2000 Center in the future

Took a chance on the open box sub woofer hoping for the best, but the unit was a little beat up but the main problem was that as soon as I plugged it into the power strip it was a buzzing noise that would not go away

This is an excellent subwoofer i have it hooked up to my onkyo 876b receiever ---which i highly recomend also hookup: extrodinarily easy to install a few seconds and one wire by the way any cable will do pretty much. it powers on automatically Sound : it has a very tight sound to it. quick response time. i tried it with several movies nothing appears to cause it to rattle or give a choking sounds. the passive woofer i feel helps to maintain this sound it is so powerful i only use 10% of the power on it to avoid my wife from yelling at me. when i watch jurassic park you feel like the dinosaurs are there. size: size was very important my wife doesnt especially like my hometheater desires but especially did not want to see a gigantic klipsch 12 inch in or family room. ALL IN ALL THIS IS A GREAT SUB AND YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED BTW ONLY AVAILABLE AT THE MAGNOLIA STORES

What's good: everything...it's small doesn't take up much room. Sounds giant. Easy to tune. What's bad: nothing...really nothing. I bought the b&w sub and it was like I didn't even have a sub. So I bought the definitive. Wow you certainly know I have a sub now. I use it mostly for my home theater system and it's great! I had a friend over who is setting up a theater system and he is sold on This sub. It has the forward firing sub and the downward firing radiator. This is great for sound and you can feel how powerfully it is also. I can't say anything bad about this sub. I think it sounded beter the the super cube also. Great sub

I have a VERY challenging living room for sound -- vaulted ceiling, open spaces, wide but not deep soundstage -- originally had a ProSub 800 with Studio Monitor 350s, sounded good for music but didn't get the WOW factor with movies -- looked at everything up to and including SuperCubes, but realized that I needed both deep and wide coverage -- with the help of Def Tech support (excellent BTW) ended up doing a dual sub setup with BOTH the 800 and 1000, with the 800 in the best corner and the 1000 on the opposite side of the same wall, and that made all the difference in the world -- tried the 1000 by itself, but while it had more depth than the 800, was still too localized -- I would recommend this combination for any ProSub 800 owners who feel like the 800 doesn't give them quite enough depth -- a really good bang for the buck upgrade

    Tight, but not low

This sub is nothing special. I picked it up this evening from a local BestBuy hoping it would provide some low end below 30 Hz. (organ pedals, some contrabass instruments.) I admit I was very suspicious of the 18Hz frequency claim, since there was no +/- dB associated with this spec, but the manufacturer's 18Hz claim is ludicrous. I would have been OK with it 'only' getting down to 25Hz or so, but this sub drops off rapidly below 35 Hz: it is down -7dB at 30Hz and below -30db of its 40Hz response by 25 Hz (measured using test tones and an SPL meter.) On the positive side, there is little in the way of unwanted harmonics at 25Hz (it is virtually inaudible at this frequency), and it seems like a reasonably 'tight' sub for the 30-80 Hz range, which is what most people will want it for. Unfortunately, that does not include me as I've already got fairly good response down to about 35Hz from a JBL Control SB setup and another sub.

I purchased a home theater in a box a few years back and have always planned on upgrading it as the funds came along. This was the first upgrade and I could not be more satisfied with the purchase. Setup and tuning was a breeze. And the sound? Awesome! I have a large living area and even though I would like to get another, I have no complaints about the one. This sub will send waves of bass through the room and it flawlessly blends in with all types and flavors of music. Epic movies like Jurrassic Park have new life for me. I'm watching everything all over again like its new. I'm loving it!

Originally looked at the Klipsch Sub-12, but due to backorders and the poor setup at the store (not in dedicated theater room) I wasn't all that impressed and wasn't willing to buy and return. If you're not concerned about size like I was, then the Klipsch may be for you. I went down to a local Magnolia Store that readily carries Def Tech and after hearing the ProSub 1000, was impressed with the sound. It's not a Super Cube, but satisfies my current needs and produces low, clear and deep bass. Don't just read wattage because BOTH the Klipsch Sub-12 and Def Tech Prosub 1000 are rated the same 300 RMS. Although it's not listed in the description or specs, this sub has a forward firing 10, and a second downfiring 10 radiator. I've tested this sub on Lord of the Rings(III) w/ the battle scene that has the massive elephants, Top Gun, BadBoys II, each and every time impressed by what this sub is willing to pick up and how it rumbles. Enjoy

    Great for Music

I bought the Klipsch sub 12 which is a 650 watt downward firiing 12" sub and a 'scratch and dent' Def. Tech ProSub 1000 which is a 10" 300 watt forward firing sub to have a 30 day bake off between them. Well, I am keeping them both. The 12" Klipsch sub-12 is in my theater room shaking my house and the neighbors house as well. The Def Tech ProSub 1000 is my family room where I mainly listen to music. It does not shake the house like the Klipsch, but it is very tight and a dream to listen to music. So depending on what you are using this sub for music or movies would determine which I would recommend buying.

I purchased this sub about a month ago. I use it for anything that can produce sound. I have this joined with the Polk TSI400's. This woofer helps me a lot. I set the TSI400 to 80 hz and let the sub handle anything lower. The sub rumbles, but it starts to mellow out below 30 hz. At first ,when I connected the woofer, I was think about returning it. I wanted something to bang. This was day one. On day 15, the day I watched Robin Hood, the woofer woke up. When they stormed the castle I heard every bang and felt every thump. The sub is very clean at high volumes. Although i never brought it passed 1/2 on the sub. I brought my Onkyo tx-sr608 to 82 (THX reference) and the sub vibrated everything that was on the walls. This is my first sub that didn't come with an HTIB. Unless I want surround sound in my bathroom. I dont think i will go HTIB again.
