Solid Chromebook - A bit of a learning curve....

For a long time Windows / Mac / Linux user, the natural progression to Chromebook is an attractive one. I have been eyeing one for quite some time and finally took the plunge on this Dell Chromebook with 16gb of storage and 4gb of ram. One has to change their 'attitude' towards what you really need to get work done. For the vast majority of people, a Chromebook or even a Linux desktop machine can work wonders. If all you do is web browsing and editing documents, light image processing, blogging etc, this machine is perfect. A power user like myself, one that has used various flavors of OS's since MSDOS & CP/M, the ChromeOS takes a bit of getting used to. I had to research to get the right apps and chrome webstore applications installed to make the machine usable for day-to-day use, and not all Android Phone apps work on the Chromebook without issues. Things like SSH access, VLC player, Network SMB / Network Harddrive access, Printer access etc takes a bit of research, however, the chrome webstore is quite capable. Sure there are certain applications that I use that won't work out of the box, but it's not a windows machine. For instance, I can't scan PDF documents from my MFC printer which it can print to, or run VMWare Horizon Viewer properly or allow me to run code on the laptop without adding a VM Linux environment. Outside of these shortcomings, this laptop is well worth the price. I may be the exception in some of my requirements, but for the most part, I got things working the way I needed to after a few hours of messing around / googling. This is now my goto machine in my laptop bag along with my Lenovo Yoga (another 11" screen laptop)

Solid, portable, fast for high school student

I purchased this Chromebook for my daughter, who is a sophomore in high school. She expressed an interest in a MacBook, but I could not justify the price in my mind for how she would use it, not to mention the possibility of it getting damaged or stolen taking to school in her backpack. I discovered this Dell Chromebook when visiting the Best Buy store and was very impressed by the solid build quality, feel of the keyboard, performance, and how it would be perfect for the cloud based research and documents she does daily at high school. I purchased for an awesome price after Black Friday. I surprised her at Christmas with it. She was unhappy after unwrapping it. It was not a MacBook. She wanted me to take it back. I convinced her to sit with it hour and do some of the things she would normally do. After the hour, she started to come around and see that she could work with it. Fast forward two weeks later and she has returned to school and she loves it. She even ignores the larger windows based laptop she was using at home. So, my reason for writing this is to demonstrate that it is very useful and appropriate for use in high school. It is just the right size and can withstand (I am hoping) the daily use at school. While it might not be a status symbol at school, it will also be much less likely to be stolen. Also a good lesson in getting a good value to my daughter. Kudos to Dell on this one.

I think it’s still one of the best Chromebooks out there, having owned one for one month now. Despite its price, the plastic body feels classy and expensive to touch. Great choice of case material, and it has a wonderful sleek but understated design that seems serious and businesslike. The construction is great for a low-end notebook, it feels solid in a way for a device expected to endure the stress of schools. Screen is quite adequate, I think its better than others, but its also glossy. Glossy improves color saturation, but you can get bright reflections on the screen. Some people might prefer glossy screens, others might prefer matt screens. If you like matt Keyboard has short travel keys like many Chromebooks. It works pretty well for touch typing, although I can't decide if I like this more less. Performance is snappy as one might expect, and this thing has incredible battery life for a notebook, on par, maybe slightly better than others I would heartily recommend this product and its brand, although I think its a bit more expensive than comparable Chromebooks of similar spec. But if you believe in the maxim you get what you pay for, this seems to be in mind.

Can't beat this model on price, build quality, and functionality. I am running Linux (under crouton) with Chrome OS which gives me the flexibility to run Visual Studio Code, terminal, and other native Linux applications. (In order to do this you need to run Chrome OS in developer mode) At the office I attach a keyboard, mouse, and monitor for daily development use. I own a Razer Blade, Dell XPS, and a Dell 7310 business Chromebook. Lately I have been reaching for this Chromebook as a go to machine outside of work. Lastly I have a setup that I can save my development work to Github, image my OS, Powerwash, and start over with a new build in minutes. No complaints as of yet and if it were to get lost or stolen I would go out and buy another. :) One tip go out and buy a large capacity microSHDC. I am running a 200GB card for storage.

    What a Chromebook Should Be

Great Chromebook for the money, especially for the $129 sale price I got it for. I was especially surprised by its build quality, which is really solid and feels like a quality product. The keyboard feels quite good to type on and the trackpad is smooth and precise. For things most people would use a Chromebook for (browsing, email, word processing, etc.), this thing really flies. It boots up in seconds, pages load quickly, and it's nice to see 4 gigs of RAM when most Chromebooks at this price point only give you 2. Just don't be doing too many things at once, it slows down quite a bit if you try running more than 2 programs at the same time. The screen has a matte finish to it which helps reduce glare and the 768p resolution is fine at this size. Colors are alright although viewing angles leave a lot to be desired, but they obviously had to cut costs somewhere. All in all, if you're a college student like me looking for a low cost machine to write papers, browse the web, and check email, this Dell Chromebook will not disappoint

Got this laptop for budget web browsing and email, and a little bit of document editing. Pros: -very affordable. -lightweight and portable. -can keep open a surprising amount of chrome tabs, I was able to have 20+ tabs open. The 4gb ram helps. -great battery life, about 7+hrs easy. More with low screen brightness. Cons: -slow at times, it has a very slow processor. Don't have high expectations. -screen is subpar, even when compared to other budget laptops -keyboard is meh, it's usable. Don't expect to type fast on it. -speaker sound quality is about what you expect for a budget laptop. Low volume and tinny. -android app compatibility isn't good. A lot of the apps I tried were not optimized, crashes, or just freeze chrome os. It's one of the cheapest new chromebook you can get. Good for light browsing and text editing in a pinch. YouTube works well enough. Bad for everything else. Screen may be small for some people. Would only recommend if you know that this is a BUDGET laptop.

      3. At the bottom right, select the time.
      4. Select Settings.

This is my second chrome book, and having cost $50.00 more than my first Chromebook (HiSense 11.6") I was disappointed at how many compromises I have to make. The Good The 4 GB of RAM allows for more APPs/Tabs to be open simultaneously, and a CISC (Celeron x64) processor feels snappier than a repurposed phone RISC processor. If you will be using this for basic office Android apps and normal browsing then this is just fine. Bluetooth headphones work, and HDMI connections create a second desktop by default so that you can use 2 screens. The Bad Features that I had been able to use, but for whatever reason do not work with this system are the following: - SmartLock (where if your Android phone is close enough the Chromebook unlocks) worked with my 2014 HiSense, and claims that it has/had set up correctly 5+ times, but never worked with this Dell Inspiron. - An official Xbox One Controller: - Bluetooth showed that it paired, but never populates under any app. - Using a USB cord caused the device to enter into an endless reboot loop ( in either USB 3.0 port) - 3rd Party USB attached 'APower' Xbox One Controller will not power on. Since no controllers tested so far work, this rules out game streaming (which Google is currently in the early stages of testing).

This is by far the best $119 I have spent on anything. The Chromebook although plastic is very sturdy and it feels good in my hand. The keyboard is awesome. There is no flex and the travel is just right for me, The LCD in my opinion is nice and bright. It is a matte screen so no glare. The battery is outstanding. I use this all day and I still have power to spare. I use mainly terminal and vim, with some streaming movies and surfing. I also have Linux running via Crostini. This purchase was a no brainer. I could have gotten the Samsung with more storage and less money but the build quality of that one was not even close to the Dell.

My old Acer Chromebook didn't have Google play store so had to purchase this Dell due to it having play store. Also I love that I can split screen on this Chromebook and have 2 applications open which I couldn't do on my older Chromebook. I can watch my ESPN sports or cable news channel while I read email and work so this is truly a upgrade for me. Also great price at 149.00 bucks thanks to Best buy! I don't play games so this lap top is great for me . I also purchased a Logitech mouse great companion it makes working on this Chromebook so much better. I didn't care if it was a touch screen or not I have tablet & mobile phone for all my touch screen like. This product runs smoothly & fast to watch live television or videos on and work at the same time. We have to know what fits us and our life's style when it come to laptops and gadgets these days

The Dell Inspiron Chromebook was easy to set up and feels like a well built machine with plenty of updated ports; however, the screen clarity and vividness are so substandard that I may end up returning this Chromebook. Overall, Dell did a great job with the design and construction of this chrome book but what I can't understand is why they would use such a poor quality screen when the end result to the user is a poor visual experience. In this day and age of cheaper LED panels and improved screen quality, Dell has chosen a screen quality that resembles something you might of seen on a cheap tablet from 10 years ago. For a 5.00 or 10.00 dollar per unit investment in a better screen panel by Dell, this would be an outstanding machine.

Bought a 32 gig version for my son for his birthday through my IT guy at church. Started out rebooting when trying to launch apps, then after doing a complete reset and system recovery it was constantly locking up just trying to log into it. The main board was replaced on site and everything seemed to be working like it should. After taking it home and giving to my son for his birthday we were setting it up for him and realized the replacement board was only 16 gig. Then tonight the WiFi wouldn't work, it was turned off and wouldn't turn on after less than a week since the main board was replaced. Even a powerwash wouldn't get it to work. My IT guy was so frustrated he picked it up and refunded me what I paid. This thing was a total headache for both of us!

I bought it on sale just before the Black Friday. I hope I got a BF price. It is worth the money. I needed a Chrome Book for web surfing, video streaming, email and the like. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I can also use Skype on it. I had a lot of problems connecting my Android 7.1.1 phone to it and downloading the photographs, but that appears to be issue with phone settings and awkward way of accessing them. I also added 128 GB SD cards and set downloads to it. The only issues are the screen, which is not of the best quality and I have to run it at the maximum brightness to see clearly. That may also affect the battery life. I get about 7-8 hours per charge.

Bought this for my elementary school child who needed it for her school project/presentation using Powerpoint. This chrome book is reasonably priced with sufficiently quick response and good enough power. Really quick to start up and that is excellent for elementary school child who does not want to wait for 5 minutes before the laptop boots up (like with Windows 10). Google offers parental control app through the smartphone so it is easy to control the web experience for kids. 11.6 inch screen is acceptable for such a basic use for kids, but may be when they grow up to middle school/high school, I will need to upgrade to a larger screen version.

Great little laptop if you're looking for a no frills setup to do web based activities and apps. Very fast, great picture, and super user friendly. You can't beat the value for the price point. It's the first chromebook I have ever used. I wouldn't go back to a traditional laptop again after using the chromebook. However my use of a computer is almost exclusively web based, which is what the chromebook is designed for. And with most services and apps using cloud based services I imagine that's what most people are looking for. But if you are looking for a traditional type pc feel or computing power this is not the device for you.

I have owned this laptop for two weeks and used it everyday in that time. It is quick for my needs, handles multiple open web tabs without any problems. It looks good, the screen is bright and detailed. Good battery life. Sometimes it has frozen up, and needs to be restarted. On a few occasions the camera has gone green screen, but restarting the laptop has fixed it. My main complaint is that the keys are clunky and feel brittle, the keyboard is tiring on my hands. Thankfully, I can attach an external keyboard to one of the two USB ports. Overall, a decent budget Chromebook.

Never used a laptop before. I have a desktop and I am really attached to the mouse. I also have a tablet and really like the touch screen. Wasn't sure how I was gonna take to this chromebook with no mouse and no touch screen. Turns out it is incredibly easy to use. It is perfect for checking emails, surfing the web (much easier than the tablet I have). Very easy to set up, I did it myself (and didn't even need my kids' help!) I'm sure that I am only using a tiny portion of all the bells and whistles, but so far it does everything I want it to do. Touch pad is nice and keyboard is too! Battery life seems fine as well. Very pleased with my purchase.

Seems to be a decent computer and moves ok for streaming. My use is limited but I decided that learning the operating system is just not worth the time. It doesn't recognize my printer but does most other Canon printers. Some apps don't work on this that do work on your android phone. Navigating through settings, etc. is not at all like working on your phone, so you're starting from scratch with a pretty substantial learning curve. My bottom line is that it just isn't worth the trouble and I am going to return it and get a unit with Windows 10. If you are willing to spend the time getting the Chrome operating system to work for your needs, it seems to be a good computer for the price.

I wanted a Chromebook because of its simplicity. I have a PC that has multiple drives that I use for video editing. Sweet. But it consumes a lot of power. I use the Chromebook with the PC's keyboard, mouse, and monitor. So, for most of my simple things (mail, browsing, taking notes) I use the Chromebook with the larger screen. Or, I just disconnect the Chromebook and carry it around; it's super lightweight. If I need to do some heavy duty computing, I just switch on the PC and off I go with it's greater power (and electricity consumption). Best of both worlds at my fingertips.

I bought this as a light, portable, data entry tool for our medical assistants to input data into our cloud-based EMR. The data they entered would including scanning and manipulating documents to add to patient charts. Even though our EMR requires Google Chrome to work well on PCs, it would never display correctly in the Chromebook! Additionally, the document management for printing and scanning never worked properly regardless of whether it was paired with an Epson, HP all-in-one, or a Canon. My surface tablet worked better than this. This piece of junk has less usefulness than an Acer netbook I bought in 2010. Complete waste of money.

I bought this chrome book for my great-granddaughter because it is what they use in school. I was impressed by the ease in which I was able to set it up on wi-fi, pair her Bluetooth devices (headphones, mouse) and also plug her action camera into the usb port and have it immediately recognize it. It is very user friendly and web pages load fast on the internet. It is just what she needs for school work and to do fun stuff like upload her videos to YouTube...so happy with this purchase.
