    Great Monitor With Some Drawbacks

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased this monitor on Dell.com but the Write Review option is missing so here I am. Starting off with opening the monitor it came well packaged and the instructions were pretty clear in how to get the stand connected. Build quality is good and nothing seemed to have any cheap plastic feel to it. When you first set it on your desk the curve will be very apparent from an angle but sitting in front of it I didn't notice any difference from a flat monitor. The monitor has a joystick on the back to navigate the menu which I like. There is also a Dell Display Manager you can download on PC which give you some of the same options as the built in menu. I used it to set some key commands to change between input without have to reach my had behind the monitor to change inputs. This monitor also has Freesync which works nice on PC. XSX supports it but it's not supported on PS5 at this time of review. The Response Time feature is the main thing I'm writing this review for. This monitor can be set to many different refresh rates when connected to a PC: 50, 60, 100, 120, 144, and 165hz. What I've come to realize is this monitor has noticeable ghosting when at the 50 or 60 refresh rate but set it to anything higher and it goes away. This monitor also has motion blur at any refresh rate but less noticeable than the ghosting issue. The Response Time feature is what helps clear up motion blur but with some caveats. The default option is Fast which I'm sure if you've only ever used a TV for gaming before then you probably won't even notice the motion blur at this option. Now moving up to the Super Fast option at 165hz you can notice a reduction in motion blur but it starts to introduce a slight ghosting effect like we had before at 60hz. If you set it to Super Fast while at 60hz you will notice artifacting making the feature useless so never use it unless your monitor is set above 60hz. Moving up to the maximum Response Time which is called MPRT. This feature requires your monitors refresh rate to be at 144hz or 165hz to even switch to it. In my testing just like the Super Fast mode it improves the motion blur a little more but also introduces a little more ghosting. In my opinion if you are running your monitor at higher than 60hz and you would like a slight reduction in motion blur then the Super Fast option is as high as I would go. Regardless if you notice artifacting this is the feature you should reduce to get rid of it. Now for the main point of interest with this monitor which involves consoles like PS5. Since this monitors ghosting is only apparent at 60hz, with PC you can set it higher and never have this issue (at least if you keep the Response Time to only Fast). But on PS5 you don't have the option to set the refresh rate of the display only allow a game to switch to 120hz if it supports 120fps(a tiny list of games) which points out this monitors flaw. It's 60hz mode sucks and only on PC can you get around it. Now playing Spongebob Battle for Bikini Bottom on my PS5 which locks the monitor to 60hz I can notice the ghosting but if I'm not looking for it it's still playable and a fine experience but not the best this monitor can do. Another thing about PS5 and this monitor is the RGB Range in the PS5 settings. By default it's set to Automatic and this works fine on my TV but for this monitor it sets it to Limited which looks washed out. So remember to manually set it to Full so you get the best colors from this monitor. The colors are actually very good for not having HDR. When it comes to this Spongebob game, if you have it on PC you need to experience it at 120-165hz on this monitor, it looks so smooth and clear along with the colors that just pop. Resolution wise I don't really see a need for higher than 1080p at this size monitor. I have a 55in 4k set that I sit about 5-6ft away from and this monitor which I'm using 2ft or less from and I don't notice any drawbacks to the resolution of this monitor. I will probably be using it until 4k gaming monitors are cheap and graphics cards are not made for scammers anymore.

      Dear Charlie,

We appreciate you taking the time to leave us your review. We are sorry to hear that you are not too happy with your Dell 24” curved gaming monitor because its picture is not clear.

Your monitor has a built-in diagnostic tool that helps you determine if any screen abnormality you experience is an inherent problem with your monitor, or with your computer and video card.

      To run the built-in diagnostics:

      1. Ensure that the screen is clean (no dust particles on the surface of the screen).
      2. Press and hold Button 4 for about 4 seconds until a pop-menu appears.
      3. Use Button 1 or Button 2 to select the diagnostic tool and use Button 3 to confirm. A gray test pattern appears at the beginning of the diagnostic program.
      4. Carefully inspect the screen for abnormalities.
      5. Press Button 1 again to change the test patterns.
      6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 to inspect the display in red, green, blue, black, white, and text screens.
      7. Press Button 1 to end the diagnostic program.

If you do not detect any screen abnormalities upon using the built-in diagnostic tool, the monitor is functioning properly. Check the video card and computer.

I'll admit that I've always been a bit skeptical about curved monitors. Then I got this one. I'm officially a convert to the cause now! Setup of this monitor is fairly straight forward and requires minimal effort. Remove the display, base, and connector from the packaging. Attach the connector and pole to the back of the monitor, connect to base and tighten the screw and you're ready to rock. Dell includes a rather nice Display Port cable in the box along with the power cable which is a nice touch. My current gaming laptop only has an HDMI port on it so I dug one of those cable out of my closet and connected it that way. What has impressed me so far about this display is the response rate. I'm not experiencing and blurring when playing PUBG or GTA V at high settings. One unexpected benefit, to me at least, is the way having a curved display adds to the experience when playing a first person shooter. Seriously I don't think I can go back to gaming on a regular flat panel now. Brightness is decent enough. One down check item is that color tends to sometime seem a little washed out. The stand is nice and allows one to adjust the hight and tilt the display for optimal placement for you. Overall this is an outstanding gaming monitor, especially if you're new to curved displays like me.

Fast, immersive gaming monitor. G-Sync Compatible

The 24” Dell VA curved gaming monitor is an excellent personal monitor for gaming and movies. I only say personal, because of the mild curve in the screen, which really does make it more engrossing for the user. The picture in the curves slightly envelopes your peripheral vision, shifting more of your attention to what’s on screen vs your surroundings. I honestly had my doubts, but going back and forth between flat and curved screens really helped demonstrate the differences. I really like the curve for things I want to get lost in and escape reality with, like games and movies. Sitting about 1.5’ away, the curves make the experience more immersive. The only time I didn’t like the curve was for doing graphic design work. I keep thinking the curve will throw off my proportions so I switch to my flat monitor for that, but it’s probably fine. However, this monitor was built for gaming, and it does a great job with that. With a 165hz refresh rate, Freesync and G-Sync compatibility, 4ms grey to grey response time, and a sharp, colorful 1080p screen, this monitor does an outstanding job with games. It’s not advertised as NVIDIA G-Sync compatible, but I can confirm it works connected to my Aurora R9 with GeForce RTX 2080 Super. You have to use the DisplayPort connection for this to work and thankfully, Dell’s nice enough to offer the cable for it. I’m coming from 60hz monitors, so to jump to 165hz is a blessing, especially with G-Sync that syncs the monitor refresh rate with the graphics card. Cyberpunk on ultra with ray-tracing and G-sync on has been a very smooth experience. Steering seems a lot more manageable for some reason, which was a weird surprise. Playing Doom Eternal was an amazing experience. It ran at a constant 165hz, and with all the graphics bumped up to top specs, there was endless demon slaying fun. One of those “oh my, it’s 5am” moments, which is a testament to how this monitor can help make games more engrossing. There’s a neat joystick in the rear to control the monitor settings and adjust the on screen display. There’s some nice gaming oriented options and presets, which also allows you to fine tune the monitor response rate, black levels, etc.. Super Fast is the upper limit for G-Sync compatibility, but there’s a 1ms MPRT mode that’s even faster. I won’t get into MPRT testing metrics, but a VA panel offering 4ms grey to grey is impressive already and Dell’s done a great job here turning a weakness into a strength. I wish the monitor stand could do more than adjust height and angle. It’s VESA mountable so not a big issue, I just wish the screen could at least rotate 90 degrees for vertically oriented games. Also, yeah, it’s not 4K, but if you’re into fast, competitive gaming, you’re probably using 1080p anyway. Plus, it would drive the price point much higher and out of reach for many gamers. If you don’t mind playing 1080p and are in the market for a fast gaming monitor, you should definitely check this one out. The engrossing curved screen, fast response time and refresh rate, excellent deep black levels, and fantastic anti-glare, this monitor has a lot to offer a gamer, especially at the price point. Good job Dell. PROS - Sharp 1080P picture with excellent color and brightness - Excellent anti-glare and off-axis picture - Freesync and G-Sync compatible - 165hz refresh rate - 4ms GtG response time - 1ms MPRT response time - Joystick OSD control - Good game present modes - Mild screen curve is more immersive for single person viewing - Great for games and media - DisplayPort and HDMI inputs - VESA mountable CONS - Not 4K - Curve unideal for groups - Don’t like curve for graphic design work - Monitor stand only adjusts height and angle. No swivel or rotate. - No USB ports

Overall this is a good VA panel. It has a VESA mount, which is needed to add above my main monitor. Dell provides a number of different color options to help adjust the color to your preference. It definitely took me a bit to dial it for me next to my other monitor. But has good whites and blacks and it runs at 165hz with FreeSync. If you want to get the 165hz make sure to go into Windows and set it 165 under monitor settings otherwise it will be stuck at 60hz. Also while not officially Gsync Compatible my nvidia control panel allowed me to set it as long as I set it as override. It works well and the curve is nice on a smaller monitor and overall if you need a high refresh 1080p monitor this is definitely one that I am happy with.

By far the easiest assembly and set up I've experienced in a gaming monitor. Breakdown for travel or use in a old school "LAN party" should also be very fast and the screw head for the base mount included a swivel so I didn't even need a screw driver! Lightweight, with a very smooth vertical height adjustment and tilt feature. Adjustability of color and settings was on point, clarity was excellent and the curved surface seemed to really make backgrounds and the general "feel" of the games more realistic and immersive. Not sure if that is just an optical illusion sort of thing, but I really like it. I am very pleased with this monitor. It is my first experience with a curved screen and so far it is outstanding.

I'd say for the vast majority of PC gamers, this monitor should be just fine. The monitor provides excellent colors and works great with my gaming laptop. I have a NVIDIA RTX 3070 in my laptop and this works great with this monitor. I'm playing Destiny 2 and at max graphics, I'm getting about 60-70 FPS on this monitor. Colors are bright and vibrant and no issues with screen tearing or anything. The monitor includes an HDMI and DisplayPort cable which is nice. While the refresh rate on this monitor is pretty good at 165Hz, it's only 1080p .Granted, for the price, can't expect 1440p or anything like that but, still, the clarity is good. The curved screen is kind of new for me as I've always used flat monitors. Overall look/feel of the monitor itself is great and I'm digging it.

As someone who has a gaming PC and 2 game systems in a compact space with a 3-monitor setup, space is a challenge at times. This 24-inch Dell gaming monitor fits perfectly in my space and use case. The monitor is well packaged and is very easy to assemble. Out of the box, this monitor makes me smile because it includes both an HDMI cable and a Displayport cable. The first test for me with any monitor is flexibility. When you have a multi-monitor setup, you need vertical and tilt movement to be spot on for placement in your setup. This Dell gaming monitor fits the bill – easy to adjust in height and tilt to accommodate most physical configurations. It has 3 source inputs – 2 HDMI and one Displayport. That’s a definite win for me because it can not only accommodate my gaming PC, but a couple of nearby gaming systems as well. And the curve? Very welcome, even on what is considered a smaller display. How does this monitor perform? Well, outstanding, based on its specs, but some people may be looking for more. This monitor is limited to 1080, but that along with its 165Hz refresh rate can be considered the true strength of it. Action/motion on this thing is fast and smooth at some of the highest frame rates, and the response time is outstanding. I found the picture to be one of the best I’ve seen on gaming monitors in this price range, and the anti-glare is not only welcome but performs very well. There are quite a few settings to adjust the display output, including response time and plethora of preset modes. For me, out of the box, this monitor looked crisp, with great color accuracy, and performed fantastically. I didn’t feel compelled to touch any settings. I thought they customized it for my rig. It really performs well. This is an outstanding gaming monitor from Dell. The only way you can miss with this one is if you want something larger, or are looking for a 4K gaming experience – impossible to squeeze that out it, obviously. It’s fast, smooth, responsive, and has a fantastic picture.

In the box is the monitor, the monitor arm, the monitor foot, electric cord, hdmi cable, DisplayPort cable, instruction diagram and informational brochure. Please note, this is my first experience with a curved monitor. I now wish I didn't wait this long to experience the added accuracy achieved with a curved display and with the added viewing angle that you get with the curve. When it comes to high frame rate gaming, this display is nothing less than amazing. The deep blacks that are achieved in this monitor allows for greater target acquisition unlike other displays I've used in the past. This also gives you the ability to see enemy players a lot faster than normal which also increases your reaction time. I'm very happy with this monitor so far and it excels really well in the 60 to 120 MHz range. I'm currently playing call of duty and it looks absolutely beautiful. With the built-in AMD free sync tech you can a have a refresh rate up to 165mhz.  Also you are able to have multiple monitors like I do with the built-in Multi-Stream Transport (MST) which is definitely an added plus. DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport allows you to daisy chain monitors with DisplayPort 1.2 ports. Basically you can hook one monitor to the other for a continuous display via the DisplayPort 1.2 ports.  There are seven different plug-ins: 1. Power Connector | 2. Security Lock Slot | 3. Stand Lock Feature | 4. HDMI Port (2.0) | 5. HDMI Port (2.0) | 6. DisplayPort | 7. Headphone Out Port The pros for me are lightning fast refresh rate, super high black concentration and the built-in AMD free sync. Currently I have no cons with this monitor. Would I buy again? I would buy this product again hands down. It does what you need and it do, and does it extremely well. Would I recommend to friends and family? Absolutely. I can not wait to share this product with my friends and definitely my family.

The Dell S2422HG has a number of notable improvements over last year’s model, the S2421HGF with the biggest change being an upgrade from a Twisted Nematic (TN) display panel to a Vertical Alignment (VA) display. VA displays tend to look better from multiple viewing angels, and offer improved contrast ratios (3000:1 compared with last year’s 1000:1). The panel got a bit of speed boost from 144Hz up to 165hz, assuming your graphics card can support the bump. The challenge is that most VA displays continue to suffer from ghosting and motion blur which is why most competitive gamers continue to choose IPS as their display panel of choice. On the other hand casual gamers enjoy the cost savings that can be had with VA displays. Along with panel changes, Dell upgraded the dual HDMI ports from version 1.4 to 2.0 and the curved nature of this display helps shrink the physical footprint from 21.17 in to 21.01. Diagonally the display shrunk from 24 in to 23.6 but your eyes will likely not notice the difference due to the curved display. This year’s model is slightly less heavy at 7.4 lb vs last year’s 7.44lb. Another notable change is that Dell no longer includes an HDMI cable, instead bundling a Display Port cable with this monitor. The controls for the monitor are on the back, right-side of the display. As a left-handed person, this makes them awkward to work with so I was happy to see Dell offers the Dell Display Manager Application. Once installed a majority of the settings can be configured through this application. Make sure to install the latest driver for the monitor as well. If you plan on using AMD FreeSync Premium, it’s disabled by default so you’ll need to enable this using the control buttons. Of note AMD FreeSync works with NVIDIA graphics cards but must also be manually enabled through the Nvidia Control Panel application. Overall this monitor is a good fit for casual gamers.

The Dell 24" curved gaming monitor is not only a great monitor for gaming, but for everyday use as well. The FHD display is crystal clear and great on colors and details. The curved display creates a one of kind experience, by emerging you in the game, while giving you a perfect view of every detail. Plus, with a refresh rate of up to 165HZ, you can be sure that your gaming experience is taken up a notch. This has to be one of the easiest displays that I have ever set up. The stand is fantastic, the monitor snaps right into the stand making it take merely seconds. The stand enables the monitor to tilt back at 21 deg. and forward 5 deg. The monitor also raises and lowers all the way to the bottom. There are 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, as well as a DP port located on the back of the monitor. There are also 4 buttons that can be customized to select a desired custom display. The monitor has many built-in screen settings for any kind of viewing experience, plus a very detailed array of color settings. Overall, this is my new favorite display. The picture is so clear and comes calibrated right out of the box - it looks amazing! The stand is very practical and easy to set up, plus it gives me the ability to adjust it however I choose. The curved display is actually very useful, as it gives you the perfect viewing angle. Match that with 165hz refresh rate and you have a one of a kind gaming experience. Lastly the amount of customization Dell offers in the screen settings is great, also the ability to add shortcut keys on the monitor itself makes for a perfect experience. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a new monitor.

I want to recommend this wholeheartedly. The looks are great and the monitor is simple. It could have done with more ports. The buttons are easy to use. The video looks good. The colors are true and deep. I dabble in serious photography and can easily use this monitor with my Lightroom presets. 24 inches is plenty if you have not used a bigger monitor. The Curve part looks good but will look even better to you if this is your first monitor that is actually curved, Being the nerd that I am, I have experimented with many higher end models and this one does not disappoint keeping its price in perspective. The refresh rate is 165 MHZ. And that is good. Very good. As part of my testing I was not blown away at first because I am so used to the performance of my higher end monitors that this seemed at par with all of them but nothing extra. And there lies its true potency. When it can compete with products that are double its price then this is a very very good deal. I mainly play Sports games-- soccer, tennis, baseball, football etc. Sometimes the movements are really important and this did not miss a beat. This was put into perspective for me when my friend was visiting me and he was greatly impressed by the refresh rate as his own monitor is a lot slower. So if you are in the market for a good gaming monitor that is curved and will not break the bank, this one should be in your list. You can buy this if you are just looking for an everyday monitor as well. The clarity will surprise you in that case and 24" will be big enough but not too big for your daily use.
