The first one I got at the store proved defective right out of the box when I got home and installed it - took it back and Best Buy store personnel swiftly got another one from the display shelf - and tested it at the Geek Squad counter - assuring it was "to spec" and the replacement item worked as it should. Simple, lightweight, and price was right.

After many years as an engineer, I retired and bought a new HP computer which didn't have a disk drive. Now 11 years later, I now want to review the info on my many old computer disks. I bought this Dell external drive. To install it I had "to plug it's cord into a USB port on my computer." That was it, and it is fully operational.

This Dell DW316 external DVD drive is fantastic! It’s sleek, lightweight, and very easy to use. Just plug it into a USB port, and you're good to go—no complicated installations required. The performance is smooth and reliable, whether burning CDs, playing DVDs, or installing software. The build quality feels premium, and its compact design makes it portable. It’s perfect for laptops without an internal optical drive. Highly recommend this drive for its quality, functionality, and value!

You get Dell reliability and you only need a low-power USB2 port to connect and power it; no power cord is needed. I run this drive plus a 4 TB USB hard drive from a USB 3.0 hub attached to the single USB 3.0 port of a Dell 7506 2n1 (the new one) with no problems whatsoever.
I have so far used the unit to rip several hundred CDs, HDCDs, and HRx discs via dbpoweramp with zero operational problems. According to the dbpoweramp program, this also seems to be one of the rare current external CD/DVD drives which will detect C1 errors.
At the price, even if it fails after a thousand or so CD rips, it's still a bargain.

Just what I needed for my new HP OMEN system.

My older HP OMEN began to die, so I purchased a new OMEN tower system. My old OMEN had a built-in DVD RW drive; for some reason HP didn't seem to think their new system needed one. Purchased this Dell DVD RW, plugged it in, and it works fine. A little noisy, but that's okay.

This product works how its supposed to. It backs up all of my important files whenever I shut my computer down for the evening. Not much more to report. It is small and portable however I only use it on my desktop. Seems to be working just fine. It's pretty much plug and play especially since I had the Geek Squad set it up on my new computer. Thanks for reading and I hope it was helpful to you.

My kids have the slim notebooks, and they got used to not being able to burn or read discs. Then one day they ask me if there's a way to hook one up, and is it expensive? I say I'm sure there is, and it's probably expensive.
Well, I hop onto BestBuy.com and find that it's way cheaper than I expected (I was thinking over $100), so we online order for in store pickup. When we get it, my kid's like "Wow, it does DVDRW too!"
What a deal!
They said it's quick too!

With external CD/DVD drives becoming scarce and no longer standard on most new computers, I couldn’t pass up the chance to grab this Dell USB Slim DVD+/-RW Drive for just $20. It’s a reliable brand, supports M-Disc, and is perfect for anyone who still prefers DVD backups like me. At this price, I even bought a spare to keep in storage for future use. Simple, functional, and a great deal for a quality product!

The external drive is plug and play. Just plug into an USB port and you are ready. Handles cd’s as well as dvd’s.
It’s high speed and M disc capable. I don’t “burn” DVD’s so I can’t attest to that end of the software.
I rated only 4 as slipping a disk into the drive is a tad wonky. I have read they are almost always that way on external drives but I feel that if internal drivers are better supported then certainly external drives should be as well.
Basically you have to support the tray with one hand while inserting the disk. Also, the tray doesn’t slide all the way out for like internal drives do. This is my first external drive I have ever used so hard to know if they are all simply not made as well as internal dvd drives are or if there is some limitations for external drives which I find hard to believe there is with all the tech we have today.
I went with Dell as it was purchased along with my Alienware laptop. Would have been nice if they offered it in white to go with the beautiful white of the Alienware. They missed out on a wonderful marketing tool where one would be more apt to buy any and all components in that silvery white color. To have matching components such as mouse, external drives, headset, etc, would show that their marketing team was thinking.

Don't use it often but it connects to my Dell Latitude 5290 2-in-1 easily and works just like it supposed to work. Nice smell and compact and fits nicely in laptop sleeve for easy transportation.
