Review of Dell - USB Slim DVD+/- RW Drive

The Dell - USB Slim DVD+/- RW Drive - Plug and Play Model DW316 was purchased along with an HP Envy laptop. I needed computer access to legacy cd's and dvd's since there was no internal drive on the laptop. I simply plugged it into the USB port and it worked perfectly immediately. Having an "add on" device like this which is only used periodically lessens the laptop weight.

This device has been very useful since most computers nowadays are not coming with an internal drive. My job requires me to use CDS but the work computers no longer have the drive so purchasing one of these for on-the-go job assignments has been the best decision for me. The diced is slim so it can fit it all of my purses and not take up too much room. I recommended putting the USB cord in a ziploc to keep it from getting broken or messed up.

This Dell DW316 external DVD drive is fantastic! It’s sleek, lightweight, and very easy to use. Just plug it into a USB port, and you're good to go—no complicated installations required. The performance is smooth and reliable, whether burning CDs, playing DVDs, or installing software. The build quality feels premium, and its compact design makes it portable. It’s perfect for laptops without an internal optical drive. Highly recommend this drive for its quality, functionality, and value!

Great little external (USB) CD drive. So far I've only used it to test some software before selling it on eBay, to make sure it worked on Windows 10. Also for listening to audio cds. I experienced excellent customer service at my local BestBuy -- friendly staff helped me find the last one on the shelf (lucky!) and I was in and out in 5 minutes! Back at home, it was truly plug-and-play (like most things these days, but still). Very happy with my purchase!

This unit was a temporary replacement for an internal optical drive that went bad while still under warranty. HP kept sending the wrong part so I needed a DVD drive in the interim. This Dell met my needs perfectly: USB, available immediately, inexpensive & functional. Plug & play out of the box, it was up and running in seconds and allowed me to keep working while I continued to be frustrated by HP. The Dell is a bit flimsy and a little awkward to open/close but otherwise is a great value. I am now happy to have both internal and external drives.

It performs as expected. My new laptop does not have a DVD drive, so I needed this to watch movies when I'm off the grid.

I needed a way to handle DVD burning and reading. This DVD handles all my needs from outside the laptop. However, you do not have the extra weight by having it in the laptop when you do not need it.

Perfect to use and like the slimness. I gave it a 9 as the included software disc was useless as some other administrator to bless other than me and I bought both the laptop and dvd player.

I was pleased to find a name-brand perpheral DVD/RW drive at a competitive price - and with extra-quick shipping. I had to get a playlist put together and written to music CDs with a tight deadline. This drive did not disappoint (the cheap LG one had definitely disappointed!)
In addition, I can now watch instructional and entertainment DVDs anywhere, despite my laptop having no DVD drive. This product is as dependable and functional as it's brand suggests, is light and portable, and the Best Buy pricing was right on target!

A nicely assembled DVD drive, although a bit on the flimsy side. In that respect it's very similar to the ones that used to be built-in to laptops. I simply bought a protective case for inside my laptop backpack, and for the price, it can't be beat. Imho.
It plays and burns music CD's, and it plays movie DVD's (I use different software than what came with the drive). Haven't burned a DVD yet, but there isn't any reason to suspect it won't do as well, given the aforementioned.
Good price. Does a great job. Yes, I'd recommend it and buy it again if needed. Get a case!

The external drive is plug and play. Just plug into an USB port and you are ready. Handles cd’s as well as dvd’s.
It’s high speed and M disc capable. I don’t “burn” DVD’s so I can’t attest to that end of the software.
I rated only 4 as slipping a disk into the drive is a tad wonky. I have read they are almost always that way on external drives but I feel that if internal drivers are better supported then certainly external drives should be as well.
Basically you have to support the tray with one hand while inserting the disk. Also, the tray doesn’t slide all the way out for like internal drives do. This is my first external drive I have ever used so hard to know if they are all simply not made as well as internal dvd drives are or if there is some limitations for external drives which I find hard to believe there is with all the tech we have today.
I went with Dell as it was purchased along with my Alienware laptop. Would have been nice if they offered it in white to go with the beautiful white of the Alienware. They missed out on a wonderful marketing tool where one would be more apt to buy any and all components in that silvery white color. To have matching components such as mouse, external drives, headset, etc, would show that their marketing team was thinking.

The DVD portable drive works great. Needed one to attach to devices that do not have a CD/DVD drive. Great for DVD playback and recording files externally.
