Great for gaming - but not Alienware

Overall, the laptop hits the mark on the basics - speed, graphics, memory. Battery power was pretty impressive. I left the laptop unplugged for hours and still had half the battery charge. This was even with the screen setting not yet set to go into sleep mode. I was shocked it lasted as long as it did.
The laptop is pretty heavy, which I'm not a fan of but I had to admit that it feels very solid. Nothing my cats will be knocking down on the floor...or our toddler for that matter.
Keyboard is great. I especially like the button for the calculator. Seems silly, but it's something I pull up often so it saves me a few clicks.
I'm not a huge fan of the illumination, but without it you almost can't see the keys so looks like I'll have to keep it lit. It's ORANGE. We've invested some time trying to figure out if there's something other than orange, but it doesn't appear that there is anywhere to change the color on this laptop. Some googling suggested it should have an option and there was an Alien Command Center that seemed to be a good next step, but after downloading it I received a message that there were no relevant components. so just be aware this isn't an Alienware level laptop. I wouldn't expect it to be at this price point, but it is a little misleading that there's a built-in Alienware Command Center with no relevant components.
You can really feel the 120Hz as the laptop moves very quickly. It really comes in handy when gaming. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 delivers some really great graphics. My son took it for a spin for gaming and was ready to trade his laptop. He was a big fan and looks forward to using it from time to time.

Fast laptop, just a add a little memory

This Dell G5 is a fast zippy laptop. As a gaming laptop it is heavier and thicker than a regular laptop and requires a larger (180w) power supply. The shell is mostly a grey plastic. The screen can be raised just prior to the end, it is not hinged at the back. The screen is a standard 15.6” 1080p which looks and reacts nicely. The keyboard is a little tight, but includes a numpad. The backlighting is a solid redish color. The sides have USB3 A slots, Ethernet, and headphone jacks. The back as a USB-C, power, USB3 slot A, and an HDMI connection. All ports worked fine. HDMI was easy to hook up to another monitor. The USB-C can be used for dongles and docks if needed. It comes with Windows 11 Home. There is a 720p camera on the top of the screen, it does not have a built-in privacy shutter. There were only two pieces of bloatware, two McAffee programs, but they were easily removed from add/remove programs in settings.
The CPU is an AMD 6600H. It powered through what I used on it. It’s got 6 cores and 12 threads total, plenty to throw at tasks. The M.2 drive is a generic 512GB SSD. The laptop comes with 8GB of DDR5 RAM. For less intensive games it’s enough, but for more intensive games after the OS, it doesn’t leave much. Some games already require more than 8GB RAM. The GPU is a 3050 and can easily power the 1080p screen and more if you plug into another monitor. The wi-fi connected at top AX speeds with no issues and the Ethernet was just plug in and go. At the default load out, programs loaded fast. I didn’t run the battery dry, but it held up well in normal use. For gaming it’ll go much faster. In high usage, the laptop got hot, but nothing scorching. Sound is on par with any other laptop, and it comes with the Dolby sound program.
I upgraded the laptop to a 2TB 970 EVO, and 32GB RAM. The laptop only has 1 M.2 slot, and 2 RAM slots. The M.2 takes up to 2280 in size, and the RAM slots only 8 or 16GB of memory. Adding one more 8GB RAM stick would go long way for more intensive games. I also upgrade to Win 11 Pro to put the laptop in my home domain. The default score from 3Dmark Time spy at 1080p was 5100. After the upgrades it was 5265. The GPU score went up just under 1%, but the CPU score went up ~20%. Load times for programs and start up was faster, and multi-tasking was quicker. See picture on how to upgrade components. Changing the M.2 standoff requires you to unscrew the M.2 heatsink, slide the standoff towards the middle of the computer, then slid it back on at the end slot at the end of the computer. The included heatsink can’t be used on a 2280 M.2 size. With more memory, heavier loads were handled better. The Time Spy game difference my seem small, but in games the extra memory makes a bigger difference. Invest in at least another 8GB to make everything smoother for games or just multitasking with the wen and office. AS with most recent Dell laptops it was easy to open and replace parts. Just unscrew the bottom screws and pop it open.
Overall, the computer looks nice, and performs well. You may be limited by the 8GB or RAM, and for more intensive games 16GB will help a lot. There is only one M.2 slot, so make sure you have a way to do a full disk transfer. With 2 RAM slots adding more memory is easy. The processor is great, and the whole bundle under $1K is a good deal. You can always start with this and do upgrades to It later. Overall, it’s s solid performer you can make even better.

I have a Dell G5, their first "entry level" gaming laptop (about 2 yrs old), this laptop is the latest in the G generation. The G series is a step down from their Alienware series of products. How much of a step down is getting more and more debatable. In general the innards of the G series can all be upgraded to have the same or similar performance as Alienware machines. The external case of the G series, does not have the same quality hallmarks of the lighter/stronger Alienware products, so similar products in the G series will weight a bit more (5.3-5.5 lbs). What you can't get is thunderbolt output, USB4, a touchscreen, fingerprint reader, high res camera or a 4K screen. If you can live without these keep reading. You can't order the G15 from Dell with more than 16GB (DDR5) memory or a 1TB m.2 SSD (but these are user upgradable, more on this later).
System setup went pretty smoothly. I believe G15s now ship with Windows 11 Home. You must have a registered account with Microsoft to install Win 11, previously this was not mandatory, it is not now. Windows 11 no longer requires Cortana to be installed by default, it's now optional. You must have internet access to complete the installation. If you have already have a MS account, you can optionally bring over numerous settings used on your previously machine (browser settings etc.), it brings over desktop icons even thought those applications are not installed (not sure how this is helpful). In any case part of Dell's windows installation includes checking for BIOS updates, and installing them with the first reboot (so do the installation with the system plugged in (not on battery alone)). After that I ran Windows Update, it requires a couple of reboots to complete all the updates. The full install/updates process took about 15 minutes.
My G15 display is Full HD (1920x1080), 120Hz which delivers a stable, clear output (much clearer with fast moving objects one the screen) and pretty good color resolution. The G15's ship with DDR5 (4800Mhz). I've been anxious to try a machine with DDR5, but beware DDR5 memory cost about twice as much as DDR4 sells for. When DDR5 was first released it was more like 3x, but it's been dropping in price. The 8GB machines ship with a single channel populated, the 16GB machines are dual channel (2x8GB SODIMMs). Dual channel memory access is by design faster than single channel access. Note this machine does not have a memory card reader (you can easily add one to one of the USB ports) don't understand this omission, but there are 4 USB ports (3 USB-A, 1 USB-C, two on back, two on right side). I ordered the smallest memory and disk that I could get with the intention of upgrading the memory and SSD myself. Before I did so I tried running Adobe Photoshop on the base 8GB memory with a 24mp raw image. First without the Nvidia card. It took 32s to get the cursor back. With the Nvidia card it took 26s to get the cursor back. Not bad, but on the slow side, as expected with 8GB memory. And having done this before, I knew I was going to clone the existing SSD. But Windows 11 comes with BitLocker (disk encryption) enabled. You can't directly clone a BitLocker encrypted drive and expect it to work. So disable encryption before cloning your drive. I cloned my 512MB ssd to a 1TB ADATA m.2 gen 3 SSD (2280 size).
My upgrade has me adding 16GB DDR5 memory (Crucial) which should bring me to 24GB total memory. The bottom of the case has 8 small philips head screws (yea, easy to open), the two on the top, and two on the bottom remove completely, the 4 on the sides don't come out completely, the actually help you pop the case open. I have to applaud Dell for keeping this simple, with no special tools required, nothing glued or stuck down with special adhesives. Once opened I immediately saw the open SODIMM slot, readily accessible. I popped my 16GB SODIMM into the open slot, it clicked into place as expected (yea). I also saw the Dell m.2 SSD (2230 size, half the length of a 2280), on the bottom left of the motherboard. I expected to find a second SSD connector to the right side of the motherboard, but there was not a second connector. So I'll be using my cloned drive alone where the existing 2230 drive is connected. My last 2 images show the MB w/original ssd installed and lack of SSD connector on right side (but mounting hardware). Dell allows you to move the screw connector that holds the SSD in place, it requires a little effort to move it but you must do this if you move from the short 2230 m.2 SSD to a 2280 length. I'm not sure if the left and right SSD positions both support GEN4 m.2 SSDs. I contacted Dell and did not get a clear answer, as to why both SSD connectors were not present, and which supported GEN4 devices (BTW the Dell online service manual for the 5525 shows two SSD connectors). But the 512GB drive that was included in my machine was definitely a GEN3 SSD. So I chose to use the same in my upgrade. The Dell SSD has a heat spreader attached to it with another screw you need to remove. I added a thin copper/graphene heat sink (1.5mm) ontop of my new SSD, it fit with room to spare. I closed things up, and powered it back on. After a bit of a delay, the BIOS recognised the change in memory, which must be acknowledged, and I was back in business.
Back to Photoshop with the same image and 24GB memory (and a possibly faster SSD). Without the Nvidia card it took 20s to get the cursor back. With the Nvidia card it took 14s to get the cursor back. Close to twice as fast. Just what I wanted to see. I did some Mpeg video encoding, and this laptop is faster than my 2 year old desktop I use for video (with a video card that cost almost what this machine cost). Photoshop is now highly optimized to take advantage of multiple CPU cores, the Ryzen 5 has 6 CPUs with 12 cores. The performance of today's GPU and modern processors continues to advance rapidly. I tried a few steam games, and found each was smooth and the display looked pretty good (not as good as my OLED display) but for the money great. I finally got the laptop's fan to kick in, and it's noticeable. But it never kicked in until I ran some games for over 15 minutes (your mileage may very). The keyboard has a nice backlit orange with 3 levels of brightness (the color is not changeable on my G15, I believe there is a version that Dell offers with full RGB backlighting).
All told a very nice, upgradable machine, with good performance.

Above and Beyond Performance For This Price

This Dell G15 Laptop is an ideal choice for anyone that is looking for a gaming laptop, but doesn’t want to spend more than $1,000. It also makes sense if portability is not a priority, since it is somewhat on the bulky side. I think it would be an ideal choice for a college student that doesn’t need to transport it daily.
Even though it could be described as a budget model, the performance it provides goes above and beyond what can be expected at this price point. Dell really made an effort to maximize the horsepower, while keeping the price low.
The 15 inch display produces excellent color and contrast for playing games or watching videos. It has an HDMI input to add a monitor, but the great thing about a 15 inch display is that it is usable on its own.
To test the performance I played Fortnite and StarCraft II (a long time personal favorite of mine). So one older game and one newer one. I know both games well, and was favorably impressed by the strong performance. The dedicated Nvidia RTX 3050 mobile GPU is more than up to the task of pushing games at 1080P and at reasonable frame rates. A noticeable indicator of what this laptop is capable of is the 180 watt power adapter. Yes it is a brick and will not be easy to transport, but that is what will help push maximum performance.
I like the Alienware Command Center software. It provides a high degree of control and customization to the laptop. Ther App also allows the integrated GPU to be turned off so performance is maximized by using the dedicated NVIDIA GPU.
The 8GB of RAM is suitable, but I would recommend doubling it to 16 GB as soon as possible because that will not only improve the performance, but also meet the needs of future more graphic intensive games. The included 8 GB is adequate, but 16 GB will really make a difference. Luckily there is an empty RAM slot to do this easily. The 512 GB solid state drive is speedy, and will be enough to store 2 or 3 games on it at a time without a problem. The laptop gets hot when pushed hard, but that is to be expected from any gaming laptop with a dedicated GPU. Fast performance creates heat. Fortunately the fan and venting design seems to have been borrowed from the Alienware line.
One of the benefits of a bulkier case is that there is plenty of room for input and output ports. Dell did not go overboard here, likely to keep the cost down, but the ports are more than enough. If you need more you can add a hub.
The Dell G15 Gaming Laptop is a perfect choice if portability is not a priority. Yes it is bulky, but as long as you don’t have to transport it often then it fills the role between a desktop and a slimmer, but more expensive compact laptop. An added bonus is that it handles non-gaming general computing tasks with ease. If you are looking for a gaming laptop and are on a budget, it is very easy to recommend.

I recently received the Dell G15 gaming laptop powered by the AMD Ryzen 5 6600H CPU, 8 GB DDR5 4800 GHz RAM, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 GPU and a 512GB Hynix NVMe drive stick.
Initial performance test scores using Passmark Performance Test 10.2 (so you can compare to your current rig) are posted in the pictures. For a laptop, the scores were pretty good in my opinion - however you can achieve much faster scores on a desktop with bigger power supplies, etc.
After downloading and installing all Microsoft patches, then all the Dell recommended patches, I loaded my two test games - Forza Horizon 5 and Microsoft Flight Simulation standard. There's not alot for space for games with a 512GB NVMe disk - so you'll have to upgrade/add a drive to keep them loaded and handy. After added my two games plus Sniper Elite 5, I'm down to 32 GB free.
So - after the games loaded and the laptop was fully charged, I grabbed my XBox controller and heading out on the porch to play a little. The quick story is that in playing Forza Horizon 5, I ran out of system memory quickly (see picture), and the graphics because sluggish and lagging - sometimes freezing momentarily. In less than an hour - I received a low battery warning.
Back into the house to plug in and take a quick flight in Microsoft Flight Simulator - I experienced lagging graphics during game play as well.
Thinking ahead - I order 32GB of DDR5 4800Ghz memory and in arrived within a day. I installed the memory today and testing the game play again. Forza Horizon 5 ran more smoothly, and non memory errors. Same with Microsoft Flight Simulator - much more smoothly.
I will mention that the sound on this system is AWESOME. It's loud and broad. Well done there!
Overall, I'd recommend this device/processor combination - but would highly recommend budgeting in for 32GB RAM and planning ahead for a hard drive upgrade or USB-C external drive.

SOLID GAMING LAPTOP THAT PERFORMS GREAT!!

I have had the chance to play around with the laptop and it has been very surprisingly capable for all my tasks and handles gaming very well.
Out of the box all i needed to do was update the apps and install system updates and it was ready to go. There is a lot to like with this system, the build quality is great, very sturdy and feels very durable. The back-lit keys is a nice touch especially with black keys and the key travel and click are very satisfying. The sound system is really surprising, it sounds louder than you would think, it is clear and has some bass to it. If you are watching videos, movies or music videos...its actually pretty good if you are just jamming on your own in a private workspace. If you are looking to shake the windows or rumble the desk than obviously you need external speakers but its nice sounds if you travel with your laptop for any hotel room acoustics.
The display is plenty bright and has good refresh rate which is very nice for gaming and actually pretty nice when watching fast action movies, no motion blur. The field of view is pretty good, mnot much loss if viewing at a side angle but the optimum spot is right in front.
The gameplay was very good for this priced laptop, i played COD modern warfare, the first gameplay and install took a little long to setup especially the shaders but once the install was complete the game play was pretty smooth. I only noticed a slight freeze a couple of times but it was not consistent everytime i played so it seems isolated.
I do wish the hard drive and ram were larger as i believe it would enhance the gameplay and performance. I wish it had a secondary NVME drive but it does not, you have to cone the C drive in order to expand. OVERALL it is a great Laptop and it gives the look and feel of a quality laptop, it will work for all your needs and it will be great if you can add some ram and update the hard drive size.
I wont comment on windows 11 because i am not good enough navigating it to rate its performance or contribution to this laptop.

An excellent budget gaming laptop, especially if you get it open box like I did. I went with the Geek Squad certified version and I couldn't even tell it was open box at all. It felt brand new and it was about an extra 100$ off the price tag. So for 650$, this thing was a steal. Personally, I wouldn't spend more than 800$ on a laptop like this, anything above that would need to have a 3050ti at the very minimum. Beyond the price, this laptop is very nice, it feels premium, it runs every game I've played on it very well, and I have almost no issues with it. I only have two small gripes. One is that it is quite heavy, but for me it's not much of an issue since I primarily use it at home, but if you are looking for something light to take on the go, it may be a bit of an issue for you. Second, and this is an odd one, very specific games, (Dead Space Remake and Battlefield 2042 from what I've tested so far), will refuse to run on the Nvidia GPU and instead run on the CPUs integrated graphics automatically. It's only been an issue in these two games specifically and when doing research I found that it seems to be the combination of an AMD CPU and a lower VRAM Nvidia GPU such as the 3050 or 3050ti. Even a forum manager for the games couldn't resolve the issue for me. While it's absolutely a bug on EAs side, I'm putting it here in case someone really wants to play these specific games on this laptop. Also some newer Fifa games seem to also have this same issue. But beyond those two minor issues, this laptop has been one of the best purchases I've made in a long while, and hopefully it stays that way for the foreseeable future. If you can get a good deal on this and you don't need to run every game at max settings, then this is perfect for you.

Very good gaming computer for the price. My son picked this to purchase with his money he saved from selling his RC cars. It did have some issues that he was able to resolve on his own like updating the bios and GPU drivers. Once we did that the gaming performance shined. The only thing we did was upgrade the Ram from 8 GB to 32 GB of Ram. Doing that made a huge difference in the speed of everything on that computer. Windows 11 for some reason uses a lot more memory than windows 10 does. The 180 watt charger stopped working at the 3 month mark and Dell is replacing it under the manufacturer warranty. Dell customer support is excellent.

I purchased this computer for a device capable of handling gaming & game dev, without breaking the bank aka paying $2k. It has exceeded my expectations, as I can easily code, run UE5 and Unity simultaneously, and even have 3D modeling applications like Maya running smoothly, despite utilizing 90% of the RAM.
I use this computer for over 6 hours a day without turning it off, and it has held up well. Occasionally, the backlight turns off unexpectedly. After researching, I discovered that Dell states this component is attached to the motherboard and cannot be controlled. They recommend using the Alienware Command Center, but unfortunately, it doesn't detect the driver because it's a Dell product. To resolve this issue, I had to enter the BIOS upon booting and toggle the backlight off, then reboot and toggle it on. After doing this a few times, the problem was fixed.
I noticed this issue occurred after updating the PC with the latest drivers and Windows updates. Since then, it hasn't happened again, hence the 4-star rating. Apart from this inconvenience, I would give it 5 stars.
One downside for people who dislike OneDrive, like myself, is that upon unboxing, it forces you to use OneDrive. If you don't uninstall it immediately, you risk potential file loss. A quick Google search will confirm this. Another issue is that once OneDrive is gone, the computer stores everything in the OneDrive folder, which can be bothersome. However, this can be easily resolved by watching a YouTube video on moving folders or using the command prompt to create a new folder (mkdir) and moving the files.
Considering these two cons, I would rate this computer 4 out of 5 stars. It performs excellently for gaming, handling Warzone, Diablo 4, GTA5, and any Game Pass games without any loud noises. The anti-glare feature is also effective when using it outdoors.

Opening the box and my first impression was I was not fond of the color. It's a light gray with dark speckles. My second impression was that it felt well build, being a bit on the heavy side. The next thing that stood out to me was that the AC adapter was huge! Powering up the orange backlit keyboard added a nice glow, but I would've preferred a dark finish on the laptop. It is, after all a gaming laptop and the color scheme just didn't reflect that. Maybe that's just me...
The external layout consists of left side ethernet port, 3.5mm audio jack and battery indicator light, two USB Type-A ports on the right side, and a USB-A, full sized HDMI port, USB-C, and AC adapter port in the back. I definitely like the power port in the back as opposed to some that place it on the side, where it gets in the way of other accessories, such as a mouse.
The 15.6-inch FHD IPS display offers up to 120 Hz refresh rates, which is solid. The screen does a reasonable job when watching movies or gaming. There's little light bleeding around the edges, the colors are decent, and the blacks are black. Viewing angles are good on the IPS panel, with little to no washing out of the colors. Dell shaved a bit of expense here with the display, but while it's not the brightest of displays, the contrast is good.
Keyboard layout is good, as is the feel of the keys. The keyboard includes a number pad, though on a gaming laptop I'm not sure what the point is. Above the keyboard there are cutouts for the speakers, which are underwhelming. External speakers or a headset will be much more satisfying as there's little base from the speakers and overall, it sounds rather tinny.
The combination of the AMD 6600H processor with an nVidia RTX 3050 GPU performed well for a budget gaming laptop. You should be able to play all games without much issue, though some of the more demanding games may require some sacrifice in graphics quality to maintain higher framerates. Destiny 2, While not a particularly demanding game, performed at a solid 80-90 FPS with the default "high" graphics settings. The G15 should have no issues with popular games such as Fortnite, Rocket League, etc. For example, Apex Legends ran at 60 FPS on Very High/Ultimate, but Metro Exodus ran at 10 FPS on the same setting. Reducing settings to Medium allowed for 40 FPS.
A performance mode can also be activated by hitting the special ‘G’ key (F9) that ups the clock speeds and the fans to deliver the best performance. There is also a mode that allows you to fully switch off the integrated graphics so that the system only uses the Nvidia GPU. This helps in giving a slight boost in performance, especially while gaming. Unfortunately access to change this setting must be done by entering the BIOS.
The M.2 SSD offers 500GB of storage. These days, that's the minimum as after installing a few games storage capacity will be strained. Same with the memory -- the 8GB is the absolute minimum, the G15 will benefit from adding another 8GB.
For the price, the Dell G15 Ryzen Edition is good, but I would recommend going for at least 16GB of memory for steady performance as 8GB simply doesn’t do the G15 justice, budget machine or not. Not only will the extra memory help when gaming, it will also make a significant difference for web browsing, especially if you're like me and often have a lot of browser tabs/windows open.
For those that are looking for something that isn’t too expensive, but powerful enough to handle everyday tasks as well as most gaming titles with ease, the Dell G15 Ryzen Edition is not going to disappoint. The AMD Ryzen 5600H is a capable CPU which can deliver very good performance, and it pairs well with the RTX 3050 GPU.

I love the New Dell G15 gaming laptop, The design is reminiscent of an Alienware laptop powered by an AMD Ryzen5 6600H and an Nvidia RTX 3050. I love the understated moon slate grey exterior, with the contrasting orange glow of the backlit keyboard. This laptop is very well built and, honestly, feels much higher quality than the price suggests. It has a beautiful 15.6” IPS 1080P screen with a 120 hz refresh rate. To complement its gaming prowess, it has what I can honestly state is the best darn cooling system I have seen on a laptop ever!
The laptop’s cooling system is one of the best, if not the best. For normal use, you would never hear the laptop fans spin up. It has two large heatsinks fed from the top and bottom and exhausted in the back. The cooling system is more than adequate that in an hour-long fragging session, the overall temperature was in the high 80s, which is darn right cool for a gaming laptop.
Unboxing the Dell laptop with minimalistic and eco-friendly packaging included only a few things. A 180W power supply, the laptop and two sheets with the warranty information and quick setup. The overall packaging reminds you that this isn't a top-of-the-line laptop, but once you get the laptop in your hands and open that screen for the first time, you will realise that the packaging is just eco-friendly and that the laptop is the real deal.
The laptop setup into windows 11 is painless as it comes. There is not a whole lot of bloatware installed by default from Dell. Mcafee antivirus is provided with a 30-day license, and that is about it. The laptop is pretty much stock as it comes to windows 11. On the front end, Windows 11 takes a bit of getting used to. For instance, to get to the task manager, you need to press WindowsKey + X, to bring up a quick launch menu that allows you to select an application you require. Other than that, Windows 11 is quite stable. Running both windows updates and Dell updates will add some fixes, including bios and video card driver updates, and that is pretty much about it. Windows 11 is here to stay, and we might as well get used to the centre start button.
So before I proceed, I did run into an issue, and if you run into this exact issue, two simple fixes exist depending on your needs. I reached out to Dell, and while it does not seem it is a hardware issue based on all the testing I have done, it was a nagging issue that was ultimately resolved by turning off a feature in the browser. It seems that there is a bug in the “hardware acceleration” feature of Chrome and Edge browsers (and anything else that uses hardware acceleration in Chromium-based browsers, so this includes Brave and Vivaldi). This problem does not seem to exist in Firefox. However, this bug manifests itself when you load a website that has video playing, be it youtube, or your local news website. The moment the video loads, the browser will crash, the computer will hang, and you are left with a frozen computer that a hard shutdown can only remedy by holding the power button.
The solution to the fix can be done in two ways. Turn off hardware acceleration in your browser, to do that, go into edge://settings/system for edge or chrome://settings/system for chrome and turn off hardware acceleration. Your browser experience will not change, and the only place I saw an issue was in WebGL aquarium test. When you turn it off, the CPU does more work, but you got plenty of processing power to compensate for the lack of hardware acceleration in your browser. This problem does not manifest in all the games I tried or any other application. The alternate option is to go into the bios (F2 on boot) and “disable” the ‘enable hybrid graphics’ under ‘advanced’. This stops the onboard Radeon chip from being the graphics card and offloads all the graphics to the Nvidia RTX 3050. The result is a much more noisy experience as the RTX 3050 takes much more energy, and your battery life drops.
Outside of that little nagging issue in the web browser, my experience was amazing. I love using this laptop for gaming. The RTX 3050 shines in all the latest FPS, RPG, and MMORPG games. Pushing over 120+ fps on CSGO, 90+ fps on DOTA2, and 90+ fps on MSFSX.
This is a great all-around laptop. You can do your homework, you can do your gaming. It's perfect for a college student going away to college for the first time. It has enough processing power to keep them happy, enough cooling to be reliable, and enough storage to be useful. Sure, 8GB of ram is a tad bit low, but you can easily upgrade your ram and hard drive. There are eight screws on the bottom that opens up to reveal the upgrade options.
So if you are looking for an all arounder laptop for your child or yourself… this is it.

A Budget Gaming Laptop: Dell G15 is More for Less!

If you are considering a gaming laptop, but don’t want to spend a fortune, or are looking to get your feet wet with gaming and bang for your bang buck, definitely look at this Dell G15 Gaming Laptop! The G15 gaming laptop is considered by some to be a budget gaming laptop, BUT it’s really more than the sum of its parts. This G15 laptop has the ability to perform under highly detailed graphics with a NVIDIA GeoForce RTX 3500, a fast processor in the AMD Ryzen 5 6600H (64 bit), a medium sized PCIe SSD 512 GB. The G15 also has a nice sized a 15.6” full high-definition screen, LED Backlit (250 nits screen) running at 120 Hz with 64-bit architecture. Since it is a gaming laptop, I have reviewed 5 games with different requirements to see if the G15 could perform up to the task (scroll down to see below). But first I want to go over the information on the Dell G15 gaming laptop.
o Setup – Setting up the gaming laptop system is very easy. Step by step logical instructions from the computer, guides you to a better experienced gaming laptop exactly as you wish. The overall time it took for me to setup the G15 was conservatively around 10 minutes. The choices you make for the setup are processed quickly so I didn’t wait long to have it up and running.
o The Build – This G15 is built like a tank and is on the heavier side at more than 5 lbs. It has a thick 15.6” FHD screen, a sturdy chassis and still has an overall appealing appearance. It is a nice change of pace, considering most gaming laptops are lightweight making them more fragile. The heavier build lends itself to durability, quality and an overall protected experience for the G15. A backlight lit amber keyboard is easily seen when the lights are low. The size of the keys are just a tad bit narrow. They are not hard to get used to, but this is just an observation. You can always use the nice sized Touchpad on the keyboard along with a very convenient numeric pad. The overall color and design are top notch. Heat vents are on the top of the keyboard area near the screen have a unique pattern to them. Underneath the keyboard on the sides are more heat vents. When I was playing some certain games with intense graphics, the G15 gaming laptop stayed cool under the duress.
o Innovative programs – Be sure and check out “My Dell” on the home screen. You’ll find tips, fixes and enhancements to make your user experience better. Another place on the laptop you will want to visit is the Alienware Command Center. Once you select it to recognize your games, it tells you how the system is responding. Temperature, Processor speed and other functions you can check. Where is the extra power while gaming when you need it the most? “The Game Shift Function.” A true innovation “The Game Shift Function” button is really the F9 key, and the function FN key being held down. This quickly adds a boost to your game by the cooling fans. This allows the laptop to work harder on game play. It uses the fans to engage with extra power to keep the system cool, so you don’t get shut down. I used it on Tekken 7 and pushed the F9 “G” key and immediately the fans came on high! To shut it off I just touch the “G” key again.
o Ports – For the G15 there is decent number of ports. There is one HDMI 2.1 port, Three USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, One USB 3.2 Gen Type C with display port, Ethernet port and a 3.5mm headphone jack (Complete surprise here! The headphone jack is very handy when you don’t have a set of Bluetooth headphones). I find I use up the Type A USB ports rather quickly. With a printer, a mouse, a controller and external HD they are full. So, I have a hub with Type C connection into the laptop and four USB 3.0 ports. This handles all my peripherals easily, neatly and still saves some ports on the laptop. I use my high-speed HDMI port to add an additional screen. The G15’s laptop screen is 15.6”, while the Monitor’s curved gaming screen is 27”! Big jump in size, but I use screen and monitor for different things. It is nice to know that the G15 HMDI port can handle an extra monitor or just use the laptop screen for gaming, word processing, web browsing, or pictures.
o Specs - This G15 AMD Ryzen 5 6000 series of processors (64-bit architecture) fits very nicely in my opinion between an Intel Core i5 – Intel Core i7 (probably closer to an intel core i7). With 6 cores and 12 threads running at 4.5 gigahertz, the AMD Ryzen 5 6600H processor performed very well under pressure as you will see in the games, I played with the G15 (reviews on performance further below). It has 8 GB of RAM which is getting to be pretty standard in most computers. The graphics are handled by a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 with 4GBs. What does that mean? The G15 can handle a lot of graphical changes, colors and speed at once, without degradation of your screen. The SSD HD has 512GB. The SSD has no moving parts, can find your information fast and works well with gaming laptops. For me the 512 GB is just enough to get a few great games and some lower GB games. The operating system is windows 11 home edition 64. I know people don’t like change, but windows 11 is an easy operating system to learn and use. I found it very intuitive and easy to navigate the G15 gaming laptop, no matter what I was looking for. The HD camera with 30 FPS and microphone are clear, very useable and I had no issues. The battery is, for a gaming laptop, is really good. I keep the G15 plugged in on my most vigorously played games and unplugged by playing a simple game of solitaire. It is up to you what works best, but what I do works the best for me. Lastly is Bluetooth! Bluetooth is everywhere now and the G15 is no exception as it is included at the highest specs at the time this laptop was made. I connected this G15 gaming computer to my 2-channel amplifier with Bluetooth and get all the games sounds and music I need through the home audio speakers. Also connecting a headset or printer is no problem with Bluetooth enabled G15 laptop.
I will list the specs from the Dell G15 Gaming Laptop and then list the specs recommend for each game I have purchased and played from Steam. I am going with the recommended specs (not the minimum specs). All the games have xbox type of controller or keyboard/mouse as their play device.
Dell G15 Gaming Laptop Specs:
Dell G15 15.6" FHD 120Hz Gaming Laptop - AMD Ryzen 5 6600H 64 - 8GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 - 512GB on SSD
1. Tekken 7 Specs:
64 Bit processor, intel core i5 3.5Ghz, 8GB memory, NVIDIA GeoForce GTX 1060, Direct X, 60 GB on HD.
Punch, counter punch, kick, and block in rapid succession, all in 1920x1080 full HD screen. This is the toughest challenge the G15 will take on. There was everything on high in options of shading, texture, motion, etc, all on HD with the full screen. Did the gameplay slowdown due to all kinds of rapid play? No. Was there any lag or blurriness in the game due to the high levels placed upon it? No. The detail in the fighters, the background and the overall play make this game a winner for sure. How did the G15 handle such a complexity of characteristics? No problems. It was fun to play at this high level.
2. Riptide GP2 Specs:
64-bit processor, intel core P4 3.0, 4 GB memory, NVIDIA GeoForce 8800 GT 512MB memory, Direct X 11, 250 MB on HD
Riptide GP2 is a step up from the previous version, Renegade. There are lots of graphical challenges here. The texture and look of the water, your driver’s outfits, the speed of the game and it's all about racing. The graphics were set to High, water settings were on Ultra texture, Ultra detail, Ultra shading all running at 60 Hz. Nothing in the game slowed the play. The water challenge, looking real and acting real, went very well. The G15 performed easily on Riptide GP2.
3. Zombie Driver HD Specs:
2.0 intel dual core 2.0 Ghz, 2GB memory, generic graphics card 512MB, 2GB on HD
This is an older game that has been revamped with HD for better graphics and game play. The idea is to save people from zombies. You run the zombies over with your car. It is a pretty simple game but it's fun to drive on FHD whole screen at the highest graphics possible. The Dell G15 had no trouble at all running an older HD game. Nothing blurred or stopped due to graphical challenges. I couldn’t get the actual numbers on the HD screen, but they looked on the higher side of graphics.
4. Marvel vs Capcom Ultimate 3 specs:
64-bit intel core 2 quad at 2.7GHz, 4GB memory, NVIDIA GeoForce GTX560, Direct X 9.0c, 4GB on HD
I set the resolution at 1600x900, and I could not get full screen gameplay without deluding the background. The game opened up in a window that got smaller every time I upped the graphic resolution. So, I decided to start at 1600x900 and used a big window. Marvel vs Capcom Ultimate 3 had loads of lighting quick fighting and specialty moves that relied heavily on graphics. Movements in the game were very fast as well. The cartoon like images of the characters never blurred or skipped. Texture quality was on the highest level. This is a very intense fighting game that the Dell G15 had no problems running, even with the highly stylized graphics and gameplay.
5. Bulletstorm Specs:
64-bit intel core i5-700 or AMD Athlon 645 AM3, 8 GB memory, NVIDIA GeoForce GTX 750Ti, Direct X, 15 GB on HD
This game took a little longer than the previous games because it has a lot going on. It a running and shooting game, a great FPS with smooth scenes and lots of enemies to shoot. The background is also rich in graphic moving and changing with the game running at 1920x1080. The texture was on high and along with other settings. I played the game with no freezing of lag of any king, aside from slower paced boot up, the G15 is suited to play Bulletstorm with no issues.
I consider the Dell G15 gaming laptop is the real deal.

Overall its a pretty good laptop out of the box, you will need extra storage and ram for heavier gaming, but the 8 gigs of DDR5 can manage almost any game on medium, maybe high graphics, the battery wont last much though, thats my only real issue, even just for watching movies it'll last like a hour and 30 minutes at most, so not very good for long distance traval but that isnt what its advertised to do, just keep it plugged it. Its a quite cool laptop, ive only experienced a handful of overheating and thats mainly due to my hot room, so it does pretty good and i run alot of heavy games. Its a wonderful starting laptop for a cheap price.

It’s a great laptop, great for gaming, streaming, and editing videos. I was hesitant about getting this due to the processor, as it is midrange, but don’t let it fool you! The processor has more than enough power to run applications, download apps, and editing intense videos. The computer feels super sturdy and solid, no creaks or squeaks!! You can tell it’s a plastic build, but in NO way does it feel cheap or of poor quality. The Battery life is really poor unfortunately, as this is a gaming laptop, playing intensive games on battery only got me about an hour. The computer is also NOT light weight, this device is heavy and not exactly (portable). The screen is also just decent; the colors aren’t 100% accurate when gaming and it doesn’t get AS bright as other laptops In it’s class. (Personal opinion) I don’t really care for the Red backlit keyboard. And the layout had buttons a little crammed in.
Overall I would recommend this computer it’s fast, great for gaming and regular tasks! I WOULD’NT consider this a budget laptop!! This laptop can perform a show!! Great Buy!!!!
