Horrendous Battery Life, Mediocre Game Performance

I originally bought this laptop because I wanted a capable machine for college while also having the ability to play some games from time to time. Overall the laptop runs well and I really have never had any issues with lack of speed or capability. The 256g SSD was also an attractive feature that I utilize fully. However, the battery life on this thing is absolutely horrendous. I get about 2.5 hours off a fresh charge before the battery saver kicks in. Really not what I was expecting with a laptop purchased in 2020. I had an old Dell from like 2008 that could go easily 6-8 hours on a charge. On another note, I did try playing Valheim and CS Go on this machine, and it really was an unfavorable experience. I got 8 FPS on Valheim with bottomed out graphics settings (couldn't even play it, the game is less than 2GB), and CS Go was just not pleasant, but playable. I'll stick to using this laptop strictly for school work, although I have to keep the thing plugged in the whole time.

I bought this laptop because it was on sale and had some add-on products. Overall I’m pretty pleased with it. It’s a bit clunkier than what I expected but it is my first gaming laptop. I purchased online so I went in not knowing how big it’d be. The fan is the biggest issue I have with it because it kicks on quickly and can be a bit loud making me feel like it’s going to overheat. 2 months in and it hasn’t. For reference I’ve only played League on it and it runs well.

The laptop was great. Speed, quality, and use were fantastic. Until my ex got on it and using it and downloading things he thought could make it more secure and he messed it up big time. But I was very pleased with this AMD product and it being a Dell was extra impressive. Gaming laptop was awesome

First gaming laptop so I kind of went more for the specs rather than other things like thermals. Here are the problems you'll see: 1. Thermals are just disgusting. 100 degrees C and above from just some light gaming. Either the laptop will crash and reboot or be throttling hard throughout. Either way, bad for long term. Dell has to release more updates to fix this. 2. There is a nasty stutter. I was able to get rid of it by uninstalling most of the Dell bloatware included. Other than that, the laptop is zooming if you can take the time to tinker with the thermals. There is a guide for it on the interwebs somewhere.

      Cyan,

Thanks for your review and we're sorry to hear about the trouble that you've had with your computer so far. Thankfully there is a way to help with the thermals on your Gaming Laptop:

      1. Update your computer BIOS to the latest version available
      • Browse to the Dell Drivers & Downloads page:
      • Ensure you have selected the correct Operating System
      • Under Category, choose BIOS
      • Locate the latest System BIOS
      • Click Download and save the file to your PC
      • Open File Explorer and browse to the location where you saved the downloaded file
      • Double-click the BIOS setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process
      2. Open Alienware Command Center
      3. Click Thermal at the Active Default Theme and set it to Performance
      4. Restart the computer
      5. Once the computer boots into Windows open SupportAssist
      6. Go to the Troubleshooting tab and click on I want to check a specific piece of hardware
      7. Click CPU under CPU Devices
      8. Select CPU Stress Test and click Run Test
      9. Open the Alienware Command Center and go to the Fusion tab
      • The CPU peak temperature should be less than or equal to (≤) 100 ℃
      • When under high stress, the computer's average temperature can be expected to be less than (≤) 100 ℃.

If you are still experiencing freezes on your computer you can try the following:

      1. Run a Computer Diagnostic. To determine if your computer is experiencing a hardware problem, run the Dell Preboot System Assessment (PSA) Diagnostics. For information on how to run Diagnostics, and to determine the issue, refer to Dell Knowledge Base Article: http://dell.to/2iaiujA.
      2. Check Safe Mode for Symptoms. To boot into safe mode, please follow the instructions below:
      a) Start the computer.
      b) Tap 'F8' on the keyboard immediately and every one second until the Dell logo screen disappears. From there you will see the Windows Advanced Options Menu on the screen. (If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, restart the system and try again.)
      c) Select Safe mode with Networking and press Enter.
      d) Log on as the administrator or as a user with administrative access.
      e) Open applications and test the computer in safe mode. If the symptoms exist in safe mode, please continue the troubleshooting steps in this article. If the symptoms do not exist in safe mode, the issue is likely related to a driver or software and you may wish to complete step 3 to see if you are able to resolve the lockups or freezing.
      3. Check for Malware. Malware (Virus, Spyware, etc.) can definitely cause a Windows system to lock up or appear to hang. To check for malware on your system and to ensure that your computer is up to date on security software, visit Dell Knowledge Base Article: http://dell.to/2wWP1zI.

On paper, its a great value for money if you need a laptop to game. Both 4600h and 5600m are great products from AMD and they have smartshift which enables better performance for both. Until you get to use it. I knew it had a bad screen, bad battery life, and bad thermals before I bought it, so my expectations were pretty low. But I was still let down by how bad it was. Gaming- constant 95 degrees on vram and cpu, 85 degrees on GPU core. Blue screened an hour into gaming session, possibly due to some part of it overheating. The laptop is heavy yet doesn't deliver the proper cooling performance, do yourself a favor and avoid it. Unless you are willing to work on the thermals by adding your own thermal paste and getting a cooling pad. Even then the 60hz screen won't serve you well with its fairly low brightness. Will be returning it

I bought this for my kids to use, but until they get their grades up its been mining Ethereum for a few months now (34mh/sec). Its pulling 141 watts at the wall with the screen off, there doesnt seem to be any control over GPU voltages so its really not efficient and typically runs around 77C. For the price paid, really happy with the machine. Boots fast, runs my dads flight simulators perfect. I suspect if you find a game that fully loads the GPU and CPU this laptop might overheat. Ethereum doesn not fully load the GPU and CPU is sitting idle and still hits 77C with a laptop cooler under it.

This gaming laptop is at the budget end but it does deliver more performance than your average budget laptop. PROs: Low Price, mobile graphics card 5600M is also found on other higher priced models at over $1100. You pretty much get about everything the higher $1100 model version minus a lower grade CPU. But saving you almost $300 with this model, is a better buy. CONs: It runs hot and noisy compared to similarly priced Lenovo, or MSI entry level Nvidia based laptops. Conclusion: This thing is great value.

Inexpensive nice laptop for kids games (Fortnite)

Pros: It's a inexpensive laptop for gaming for younger kids in the 10-12 age group (Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, etc...). It does quite well handling these games and their school work etc... Cons: It overheats and there is NOTHING you can do to boost the fan speed. Luckily it's rare that it overheats (primarily some modes of Roblox). The BIOS is practically non-existant. And if you try to install a fan control app like Speedfan or Argus, there are no fans to be controlled. You are 100% up a creek without a paddle if the system starts to overheat and the fans don't auto ramp up to handle it. I can guarantee you the fans are not running at 100% when the system crashes from overheating. I have a simiilar issue on my desktop with a Radeon graphics card. They system will NOT ramp up the speed of the fan high enough to handle the heat so instead you end up with a reboot (with no messages in the System Logs). At least on my desktop I was able to install Argus and manually force my fans to run higher at certain temps. Overall, I should have spent the extra $250 for a better gaming laptop from a reputable brand. But if your budget is bare bones, it's ok.

At such a low price for the amount of performance power, this is a great bang for the buck, but it doesnt come without some costs. Can get extremly hot and blows air onto the screen Random crashes and shutoffs, probably depends on the game, but it happens more often when framerates are set to unlimited and when running close to max temps. The screen response time is really bad (20+ms), which is more than fine for casual gaming, but for fast paced shooters and fast games it will put you at a disadvantage. This isnt an issue with the upgraded version that has a 144hz screen. The colors are amazing though. Call of duty wont fit on this. You will need external storage or another m.2 device. The ram and storage is so little, so I reccomend spending a little more for the upgraded version of this model, which may be better optimized with the extra ram and a higher refresh rate. The build quality is very impressive as well. Best buy has a great return policy. I returned this exact model and bought a HP Omen 15 with an AMD Ryzen 7 4800H and a 1660Ti instead.

I really like this laptop, its good in specs and has a decent screen. Doing normal web browsing or streaming doesnt seem to take much battery and if Im at a full charge I usually lose interest before the laptop gets low. I will say however when running under load the laptop doesnt perform well in battery life (hence the 4 stars). I havent any issues otherwise. So I bought this laptop a month ago, and I am going to be honest, it needed a little bit of work done on it. I had to install updates on it immediately for it to fully work properly, and it took awhile afterwards for it to actually do just that. However, a month later and my computer is working like a charm. Another thing I recommend is immediately upgrading your Memory, yes this computer's memory is upgradable. It can be upgraded to 2 TB I believe, solid state, but I am upgrading it to the base memory and an additional TB. You can also upgrade the RAM all the way to 32 GB, which is truly impressive. Basically, this computer is perfect if you know how to work on laptops and have access to Geek Squad.
