I purchased this laptop with the intent of making it my mobile gaming platform. Prior to purchasing it, I read so many reviews that this laptop had overheating issues. I wish I would have listened to the reviews. The laptop is great. It's a 17" laptop with a full keyboard, and great specifications. The battery life is excellent, given the specifications of the laptop. It comes with a 10th gen Intel i7 processor with 16 GB of RAM, and a SSD 512 GB hard drive, plenty of what I need it for. Also, the software suite that comes with the laptop caters to the gaming. Now for the cons. On high load (aka games), the laptop has severe FPS drops after the GPU temps reach around 70 deg, and CPU temps of around 99 deg. Dell is aware of the issue, and has released a BIOS firmware update for the laptop. Unfortunately, all it does is buy you little time until it reaches FPS drops. Just for comparison, I played Trials of Mana, Jedi Fallen Order, Heroes of the Storm, APEX legends. All of them with the same issues. I updated all of the drivers and software without any improvement. I returned the laptop. Hopefully, Dell will figure this problem out. This laptop is great otherwise.

      Dave,

Thanks for your review and we're sorry to hear about the issues that you had with your computer and that you decided to return it. If you are using another Alienware computer in the future we'd also recommend that you adjust the thermal settings using the Alienware Control Center so that they align with your intended usage. This should help with the overheating that you were experiencing even after the BIOS update.

If you have any technical questions in the future please don't hesitate to reach out to the Alienware Support Team: https://dell.to/2Inbc8F.

PROs - Just bought this on 9/20/20. So far its been good, fast load up times as expected on an M.2 SSD, games are running solid like Gears 5, Gears Tactics, Fallout 76, and Control. Good keyboard layout, dont need an additional monitor, just need this on the go gaming. CONs - personally i recommend getting a cooling pad at the time you purchase or ASAP, this device gets very very hot and your FPS will drop like flies, after benchmarking 3D Mark DLSS NVidia, the FPS went from 50 fps down to 4-5 fps, and on Gears 5 benchmark it was averaging 30fps. Overall : testing this beauty over a cooling vent in my home, i re-ran the benchmarks , 3Dmark without DLSS was hitting 40-50 fps and with DLSS was stable hitting 50-60 but highest was 75fps. Gears 5 improved and stable at 100FPS. Really all you need is cooling pad or better, to keep this system from overheating, then your FPS will remain stable. I recommend upgrading the current or secondary M.2 slot to at least 1TB or 2TB if you can afford it, games are massive, 512 GB isn't enough IMO.

As many other report runs on the warmer side but can be remedied with new firmware. But the specs can't be beat. Only downside is no windows hello ability. Not expecting a finger print reader on a gaming laptop. Battery life 2 to 4 hours off the plug have not really pushed for gaming just yet till I get everything updated. On just all the regular updates the laptop has gotten cooler running than in the beginning. Also the information on the 2070 max p is correct this is the full card. Not max q version. Has a second m.2 slot that I will be installing another drive in. Since it's easy to do YouTube is your freind. Makes it easy for those of us who can do simple things.

Pros: Great Screen, speakers, and performance. RTX 2070 Max-P will run anything you throw at it with ease. Build quality is amazing. I had an Alienware M17 before this and wanted to stay in the Alienware family since this has all of the Alien-FX and software. I was pleasantly surprised with how much lighter this was than the Alienware. Cons: Did drop frames due to cooling issues, but a new Bios update did the trick and haven't had any problems since. Wish there was more than 512GB but it is a fast drive at least. Overall: Great laptop and is worth the price it sells for.

I replaced an Asus ROP with this computer, and the performance of the dell is great. It is much lighter and easier to work with. It's fast and smooth, with a great screen and the ability to see details. My only complaint is the lighting on the keyboard and sides does not stay on until you push a key and it's pain there is a reason I wanted a lighted keyboard! :) It's a pretty petty complaint though and I am very happy with the computer in general.

Pros -Slim, super quite, thermal venting is excellent. -RGB underlighting -Screen is snappy Cons -Dell software likes to interfere with both integrated and dedicated GPU -Dell software likes to throttle down the CPU so running in a locked 2.xx state works best. -Setting for the Thermal Profile resets to "Optimized" on every shutdown. You want it on "Ultra Performance". Would give 4 stars but 3 days of my life in bios and testing wasn't a highlight. Go bigger and get the alienware or msi.

Upgraded from a three year old Alienware R4 17 which has been holding up quite well. Read reviews on BB as well as Reddit. A lot of folks talked about yes, heating issues. Ran all required updates and sat down to see how well the notebook PC performed. First issue, couldn't find any information as to whether or not face sign-in worked. The system said it couldn't find a camera compatible with Windows Hello Face. Restarted Windows Biometrics and a bunch of other settings. Nope, didn't work. Then contacted Dell Support, to which the Support person kept to the script - have you tried reinstalling the OS. Terminated the call once I began to slip down the rabbit hole - never did figure out whether or not the system in compatible, Camera worked though. Next issue = RBG lights on the front. Several of the whatever wouldn't light up. No matter what I did. Moved onto running benchmarks. My go-to is userbenchmark. For whatever reason, UB was unable to locate the GPU - yes, changed settings within Nvidia Control Panel and well as made sure antivirus software was blocking or stopping. Eventually gave up. Then tried to play COD WWII and Far Cry 5. Both sputtered and stuttered every 3 to 5 minutes. I noticed there was a memory bottleneck. Changed settings to within Alienware Command Center - Power and Thermal. No change in game play. Needless to say or type. the notebook will be boxed up and returned. Actually, will swap the SSD for an M2 and see whether or not the HD could be the culprit - yes, this is a stretch. I do not need to be clairvoyant to know the notebook PC will be returned for a refund.

After undervolting, the performance is day and night!! It does not have XMP (for now). Can't wait till my thermal paste/pads and cooling pad comes in. Playing warzone high settings stable 130-150 FPS after -100mhz. Don't get it if you don't want to tinker with it. Must buy if your comfortable opening her up!!!! All in all for me, $1499 it's an excellent laptop!!

The graphics on this laptop - outrageous - BUT - slow mo and stuttering with the heat. Had to raise the whole laptop about 2" to get a cool down that was inconsistent. The fans when playing run and run constantly. Also, the screen began to creak on opening and closing which made me think the heat would decrease the hinge life. Returned it after the trial period of 2 weeks and Bestbuy had my credit through in about 2 days which was great. Thanks Bestbuy but Dell has to tune up the thermals on this one.

      Gameshark,

Thanks for your review and we're glad to hear that you enjoyed the performance of this Gaming Laptop. In the future if you decide to give a Dell Gaming Laptop another try we'd suggest the following tips to help with the system temperature:

      1. Update your computer BIOS to the latest version available
      • Browse to the Dell Drivers & Downloads page:
      • Ensure you have selected the correct Operating System
      • Under Category, choose BIOS
      • Locate the latest System BIOS
      • Click Download and save the file to your PC
      • Open File Explorer and browse to the location where you saved the downloaded file
      • Double-click the BIOS setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process
      2. Open Alienware Command Center
      3. Click Thermal at the Active Default Theme and set it to Performance
      4. Restart the computer
      5. Once the computer boots into Windows open SupportAssist
      6. Go to the Troubleshooting tab and click on I want to check a specific piece of hardware
      7. Click CPU under CPU Devices
      8. Select CPU Stress Test and click Run Test
      9. Open the Alienware Command Center and go to the Fusion tab
      • The CPU peak temperature should be less than or equal to (≤) 100 ℃
      • When under high stress, the computer's average temperature can be expected to be less than (≤) 100 ℃.

      Best,
      Bryan

Terrific value for the price, if you can find one open box or certified. Zero issues with thermals, CPU rarely reaching the low 90s. The performance is comparable to my current i7 / 2080 Omen 17, for what it is. About a 10 FPS jump overall. The 300HZ screen is ridiculous overkill. You’ll never hit that with this configuration on any AAA game or any game you’d care to hit it on.

This seemed to be a really great laptop at a great price, I purchased one but after getting it all set up I noticed that the really cool backlit keyboard would go dark after about 60 seconds, I looked everywhere for a adjustment to just keep it on... after searching all the setting including the BIOS where previous BIOS version had the option to extend the timeout or even keep it on, that item was gone! I spend over an hour with Dell tech support taking over the machine and searching... reinstalling the Alienware command center, searching system setting and the BIOS they said they that feature is no longer an option.... the keyboard is impossible to see in low light without the back and this was a deal breaker for me. When you go to Best Buy and look at the display of laptops you will notice this is the only one sitting there with a "lights out" keyboard until you hit a key... very annoying! To bad... maybe they'll do a future update and fix this, there support website is full of complaints and people searching for a fix. If you can live with that it's probably the best deal on the shelve!

10/10 would buy again. This laptop is great. We originally purchased a dell g7 and the thermal throttling on it was atrocious when gaming. This laptop is amazing it can be loud when the fans are in full blast but it works great at keeping the system cool when gaming.

I have been using this laptop now for about a week. Using this for video or photo editing, works great. The Killer WiFi card in it has a solid connection. It works with VR and plays games, just not well. This thing get increasingly hotter and hotter the longer you play. No joke, you could probably fry an egg on it it’s so hot. Also, if you plan to stream with it while playing, don’t! It gets a star ⭐️⭐️⭐️ rating because the screen is amazing and makes movie viewing really enjoyable with the 300hz refresh rate.

      KICKA55,

Thanks for your review and we're sorry to hear about the temperatures that you're experiencing with your new gaming laptop. Here are some tips to help reduce the overall heat of your system:

This things specs are a beast. Only thing that could be better is having a 1tb ssd in instead of the 512. But this can be fixed with a expanded sd card of usb external portable drive. 4k would be nice but it also throttles the refresh rate so maybe not so nice? All in all an awesome pc
