    Great laptop with killer specs

This is a great 2-in-1 computer. It's got great specs with 32GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD Drive. As a laptop, it is fast and has a fantastic display. You can see every detail and there are no shadows when objects move across the screen. The pen support is nice and makes programs like Photoshop very easy to work with. Drawing directly on the screen really simplifies the editing process. Fold the unit in half to put it into tablet mode. In tablet mode you can use the pen or your finger to control input. The handwritting to text conversion works well, even if you have poor handwritting, like me. Response is quick and smooth. Is it perfect? Of course not. as with many other newer laptops, there is no ethernet port. It would have been nice if that were included. Another thing I don't care for is the fact that there are not separate keys for "Print Screen", "Home", "End" and "Delete". Instead, they put these items on the function key row and you must press the function button along with the appropriate key. These are commonly used keys and shouldn't require a key stroke combination. Finally, the fingerprint scanner doesn't always pick up your print properly and you often need to log in manually. Despite the drawbacks, I still really like this laptop and I'm making it my everyday machine. I highly recommend it.

    Lasted 3.9 years

Sometimes gets hot. Clear screen, but the contrast is a little meh. sturdy build, Battery life with the 4K display is not very good. Lasted me 3.9 years with absolutely no problems. Then the hinge from the bottom right corner popped out. It is still working and I am still using it but the screen is too fragile now so I do not fold it or move the laptop anymore. It is kept in one place so I can use it for another few months before I buy a new one.

Disappointing Quality - Dell User for Years

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The cover surrounding the ac port area caved slightly inward from a SLOW slide over the edge of my sectional onto well padded carpet, a distance of 17 whole inches, which also apparently broke the port jack itself and bent the pin in the charger. I bought another charger and it wouldn’t charge (didn’t know the Jack itself is likely broken at that point). IMO, that much damage from such a small drop is utterly ridiculous considering the price. If I’d dropped it from a standing position onto hardwood floors or cement, i wouldn’t bat an eyelash at the damage; I’d be happy it wasn’t worse. But sliding off the edge of the couch when my chihuahua jumped up on the sectional 2 cushions away? No. That’s a problem. Whether it’s a design issue or an issue with the quality of the materials used to create the laptop is irrelevant (to me). I’ve had multiple iPhones and iPads over the years (notoriously fragile) and haven’t broken a single one when dropped from heights far greater than the seat of a sectional. However, according to MULTIPLE YouTube videos, apparently Dell is notorious for charger/battery/port issues. Based on this experience, I concur. I bought my daughter the exact same laptop for college - she’s sent many a iPhone/iPad to early graves. Had I known, I might have picked. a different model for her. Yes, I purchased the protection plans for both of us. She used hers a few times, to the surprise of no one. Coverage on mine expired July 19th. Of course. The damage occurred less than two weeks after that. I’ve purchased several Dell laptops for personal use over the last 15 years or so. I typically buy a new one every 30 months and donate the old one to a local women’s shelter. I’ve never had an issue with other laptops but the quality vs situation and damage incurred of this Inspiron 2-in-1 is very disappointing.

    Great laptop!

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Technically, I have the model that preceeds this one but I believe the only differences are the upgraded processor (mine is an 8th gen, which is amazing) and the 32 GB of optane, which I do not have on mine. I bought my laptop as an open box, and I can not stress this enough. If you get a new laptop PUSH THROUGH YOUR WINDOWS UPDATES! If a laptop is sitting there for a long time, it is not updating the software and this can cause certain issues with how the computer operates. It will take a long time - but that should be expected whenever you buy anything new. Anyway - I did all of the updates (there were like 200) and since then the laptop has been awesome! The ONLY issue I have had, and this has been a constant problem with dell laptops from what I've seen, is sometimes its hard to get it to wake up from sleep. You have to hold the button down a few seconds sometimes to get it to wake up. But it is extremely fast, has fantastic speakers (especially with headphones!) and is an all around great computer. Highly recommend!

I really wanted to like it...

I have been wanting this laptop for quite some years now. I needed a solid laptop for college that was capable of running engineering programs but also one that had a good enough display for my photography needs. This one fit the bill! That being said, upon arrival I noted some rather important problems. 1. The audio jack DOES NOT WORK. I believe that this is a problem with the specific laptop that I received, but it was still very frustrating. I listen to a lot of music and I would prefer to not have to use my airpods every time I need audio for something as the battery life of just about all Bluetooth devices is not long enough. If I did not need this laptop for a summer class, I would have 100% returned it as it is defective. 2. The audio sometimes does not play. I have updated every driver, problem solved as much as I can, and consulted with friends that know a lot more than I do and I can't figure this one out. At times, when I don't want to listen through headphones, I will opt to listen to my lectures on the computers built in speakers. However, about half the time I try this, the sound just wont play. This is by far one of the most frustrating things about this computer to me as I have found no pattern why it will or won't play. Once again, if I didn't absolutely need a laptop, I would have returned it in a second. 3. There really needs to be more ports on it. With only two USB ports, figuring out which devices I want to attach has become a real "Sophie's Choice" for me. Not to mention, I will now have to carry around a Ziploc bag full of adapters. Between my Bluetooth Mouse needing a USB port, my SD card adapter needing a USB port, my Ethernet to USB adapter which requires a USB port, and my audio to USB adapter which requires a USB port, It can become quite frustrating. However, this is a rather minor complaint as I could get an attachment that would add more USB ports onto it. There are quite a few things that I really appreciate about this laptop that are worth mentioning. The display is excellent, it is powerful enough for Photoshop and Lightroom etc., and I really like the two-in-one options. However, I value reliability above all else and this laptop is about as unreliable as it gets. I really wish I could have returned it before the trial period was up, or, better yet, I wish I just hadn't bought this laptop at all:)

I have tight pockets but I was in desperate need for a new computer as I started video editing on the side. I spent weeks looking for the right product. My first choice was the Microsoft surface book 2, but for good specs it's way out of my price range. But this purchase has been a great investment. Resolution fantastic; 4k. Backlit keyboard nice. And I was surprised that it came with a pen. Very very ecstatic about that. Thus far pleased. I'm having zero issues with video editing. And the screen quality is fantastic.

      Someone,

Thanks for your review. We're sorry to hear that your fan noise is louder than you expected it to be. We'd recommend updating the BIOS on your computer to see if this helps lessen the noise that you're experiencing:

An out-of-date BIOS can cause loud fan noises by having an outdated temperature table for the system. Refer to update BIOS and follow the instructions to update the BIOS on your computer. You can also follow up with our Technical Support Team here - 1-800-624-9896.

    Worst computer I've ever owned

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I need very little in a computer. Good storage, speed, the ability to research and write papers, and stream tv. Oh and have functioning sound. This computer is the most infuriating product I have ever used and not capable of basic tasks. I absolutely don't recommend if you're in school and trying to write papers, it will make your life miserable. Some examples: The papers I write are labor intensive. This computer doesn't "lock" the mouse when you're typing, and thus if you bump it, it moves the cursor. It has deleted massive sections of my papers, moved the cursor so I'm writing in the middle of a random paragraph, etc., and then not allowed me to "undo" to get my stuff back. It has wasted so much of my time. It's so prevalent a problem that it deleted the top half of this review and I had to start over. I didn't expect this because this is a very basic fix that all my other laptops figured out about 8 years ago. Trying to go between a word document and the internet to research, or put the document and internet side by side is way more labor intensive than it needs to be and wasted a ridiculous amount of my time. You plug your headphones in- it keeps playing through the speakers. Sometimes it's smart enough to pull up a question box that asks you whether you want the sound to come out of the headphones you just plugged in. WHY!!!!! WHY would it do this? It's just such a time suck, it's so idiotic. Of course I want to use the headphones I plugged in! Who designed this!?!? I'll connect to my bluetooth speaker and the computer says it's connected for "voice, music", but apparently youtube doesn't qualify as either of those, so it keeps playing through the speakers and there is no way to fix it. The same goes for plugging it into HDMI to use a streaming service like amazon. It will often continue playing out of the speakers even though it's plugged into the tv and there's NOTHING you can do to go through the tv. (Sometimes though, the bluetooth speaker will then work! So I can watch tv and have to use a bluetooth speaker to get sound) I'll try everything, reset everything, restart the computer and wait approximately 17 years for it to update, etc. Then it may finally decide to randomly work. When streaming video from a tv service, it constantly lags so badly that words don't line up with mouths. I checked my internet (It's fine). The audio is so bad coming through the tv, that I was convinced I was going deaf. I tested another computer, and my ears are just fine and so is the tv and HDMI cable. I could provide many more examples of things that are annoying. All in all these are things you can live with, but I paid 1500 dollars so why would I want to? No one needs additional and unnecessary chaos or a computer that creates more work for them. I missed the return date by 1 day because I was out of town. Which is unfortunate because it was immediately obvious what a horrible product this is.

      Jaiy,

Thanks for your feedback. We're sorry to hear about the issues that you're having with your computer. You could re-calibrate your touchpad so that it's less sensitive than it appears to be now:

Some Notebooks and Tablets with Keyboards have added gesture features to the touchpad hardware and drivers. A few of these features are two or three finger scrolling, pinch zoom, circle zoom, rotate and swiping. These new features may be the reason for the erratic cursor movement since most are turned on by default. You can disable or modify the way the features work in the touchpad driver properties.

Here are some tips to modify these settings:

      1. In the Search box, type main.cpl.
      2. Touch or click main.cpl in the list of programs.
      3. Touch or click the Dell Touchpad tab.
      4. Touch or click on the picture of the touchpad.
      5. Touch or click Gestures (depending on your computer there may not be a Gestures option).
      6. Change the options as preferred.
      7. Touch or click Save.
      8. Touch or click the X in the upper-right corner to close the Dell Touchpad Utility.
      9. Touch or click OK on the Mouse Properties window.
      10. If the touchpad still does not work after following the preceding steps, refer to Dell Knowledge Base article - http://dell.to/2iaiujA.

You can read the full article here - http://dell.to/2tqmS02.

Here are some suggested troubleshooting steps for your headphone jack issues:

      1. Open the Control Panel
      2. Open the Sound properties by choosing "Audio Devices and Sound Themes"
      3. Select the Recording tab.
      4. Choose the Microphone Array on the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC device.
      5. Click on the Properties button to open the Microphone Array Properties window.
      6. From the General tab, use the dropdown menu to choose Don't use this device (disable).
      7. Click on the Apply button to apply the changes.
      8. Click on the OK button to exit the Microphone Array Properties window.
      9. Click on the OK button to exit the Sound properties window.
You should now be able to use the microphone on your headset.

You can read the full article here: https://dell.to/2WLeOpI.

Lastly, if you'd like to see if you can improve the performance of your computer's connection speed, you can try these steps:

      1. Download and install the latest Wireless Card driver. (https://dell.to/2th3Tpe) After updating the driver, re-establish the connection with the Wireless Access Point and check the wireless performance.
      2. If the issue persists, proceed to step 3.
      3. Power-cycle the local network. Shut down the Dell system, the Wireless Access Point/Router and the Modem. Wait a minimum of 60 seconds before powering up the components in the following order:
      4. Power ON the Modem, and wait for it to boot fully.
      5. Power ON the Wireless Access Point/Router, and wait for it to boot fully.
      6. Power ON the Dell system.
      7. Open Network and Sharing Center
      8. In the left side navigation pane, click on Change Adapter Settings
      9. Right click on the wireless connection icon and select Properties followed by the Configure button
      10. Under Wireless Options, select the Wireless N mode
      11. For Windows 8 or later systems click the Advanced tab and look for 802.11n Mode on the right you will be given the option to Enable or Disable. If the mode is not visible you may need to update your drivers and firmware.
      12. From the drop-down menu, choose Disable followed by Ok
      13. This should restore the wireless download and upload speed. Internet speed can be tested at http://speedtest.net.

Random shutdowns since I bought it

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I really liked this computer when I first got it. I loved the design and the ability to still right out notes and file them on my compute for school. It was simple and easy to use. However, ever since I got it, I have been having problems with it. I've never dropped, got a case for it and everything! But ever since I got it, it has continuously randomly shut down on me, the computer freezes when I am trying to work, and it has just been extremely unreliable for me to do my school work. Initially, when it was shutting down on me, it would come up with a screen that said, "Hard Drive- Not installed." But now the screen just freezes, forcing me to shut the computer down. I just don't even know what to do at this point or if this computer is fixable. I am considered just buying a Mac so I don't have to deal with it anymore but I'm also angry because I spent a lot of money on it and have only had it for maybe less than a year now.

      Dave,

Thanks for your review. We're sorry to hear about the problems that you've had with your computer so far. If your computer continues to freeze we'd recommend that you diagnose it with the following steps:

      1. Run a Computer Diagnostic. To determine if your computer is experiencing a hardware problem, run the Dell Preboot System Assessment (PSA) Diagnostics. For information on how to run Diagnostics, and to determine the issue, refer to Dell Knowledge Base Article: http://dell.to/2iaiujA.
      2. Check Safe Mode for Symptoms. To boot into safe mode, please follow the instructions below:
      a) Start the computer.
      b) Tap 'F8' on the keyboard immediately and every one second until the Dell logo screen disappears. From there you will see the Windows Advanced Options Menu on the screen. (If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, restart the system and try again.)
      c) Select Safe mode with Networking and press Enter.
      d) Log on as the administrator or as a user with administrative access.
      e) Open applications and test the computer in safe mode. If the symptoms exist in safe mode, please continue the troubleshooting steps in this article. If the symptoms do not exist in safe mode, the issue is likely related to a driver or software and you may wish to complete step 3 to see if you are able to resolve the lockups or freezing.
      3. Check for Malware. Malware (Virus, Spyware, etc.) can definitely cause a Windows system to lock up or appear to hang. To check for malware on your system and to ensure that your computer is up to date on security software, visit Dell Knowledge Base Article: http://dell.to/2wWP1zI.

    Run From this Device

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Bought directly from Dell and have been nothing but problems a couple of months after its arrival. It needed to go back to Texas for repairs twice and it continues to experience function failures. It is not even a year old and appears the need to go back again! That repair process takes 2 weeks. So I am without a work computer. On the last trip, they suggested I include all items that could be an issue, we had power issues so I included the power cord. When the computer was returned, I did not get the power cord. I had to fight with them to send a replacement power cord and that took 3 weeks. Now new issues, the audio driver has failed, so no sound. The "fingerprint" sign-in feature has also failed. Run from this device...nothing but trouble

This is a nice machine except that is suffers from loud coil whine. When scrolling on web pages or high cpu tasks, there is a loud high pitched static sound coming from the upper left corner of the keyboard. It is very distracting. There are several posts with other users running into it. Dell tech folks tried but were not able to track it down. I am on my second unit and it suffers from the same issue.
