Good Value for Basic Laptop
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Before reading my review - understand I am not computer illiterate. I do complex computer setup and repairs such as operating system installations, screen replacements, component repair/replacements, etc. So my review is not from a novice perspective. Bottom line - this is s good laptop for basic computing such as MS Office products like Word and Excel and for Internet browsing. It is not the fasted computer and this not a high end computer so don't expect it to be high end and accept it for what it is and you'll be satisfied. I bought laptop as temporary "Stop Gap" computer when my Asus gaming computer crashed. Only paid $217" out the door and that is a hard price to beat. Installed my own licensed copy of Office 2016 pro. It took hours to install all Windows 10 updates to get the software current. That's expected so no big deal. Just be prepared to spend setup time before you really start using the machine full time. I'll install more RAM soon - it can go to 16GB memory so that is a plus. The computer is quiet, light weight and does not get hot so I can sit it on my lap while wearing shorts and not be uncomfortable. It is not the 1080 HD resolution and I understand it is comparable to 720 HD. But with this screen size, you will not see a great deal of difference and yes, it is not as crisp as one with higher resolution - but, for basic computing and the low price - you really cannot beat the deal on this machine so I would definitely recommend it - unless you require high end gaming for graphics and speed. In that case you probably aren't looking at this laptop anyway.

Decent, but not awesome
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Decent for the price, but there are some drawbacks. First, and this applies to any new Windows PC, the first day or so will be slow as molasses in Antarctica while it indexes the disk, downloads updates, and installs a bunch of junk from the Microsoft store. Just let it do it’s thing and it will be much better after. The hard drive in this laptop is abysmal. In fact, just budget on getting an SSD or you will spend more time listening to the drive than anything else. While you’ve got the laptop opened up, grab another stick of 4GB RAM. Which leads to another gripe; this thing is a royal PAIN to get to the drive and RAM. Unlike another major laptop maker, this one requires the optical drive, keyboard, and entire bottom cover to be removed. Lastly, download the Windows 10 fresh start software and let it remove all the manufacturers installed stuff. If you can do all this yourself, you’ll still end up with a decent laptop for school or general use for a decent price. If you can’t do it yourself, shop for another laptop with (at least) an SSD installed.

Perfect once you reinstall Windows
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. You have to do a fresh Windows re-install or else it will run unbearably slow. Just type "Windows Defender" in the search box and click on Windows Defender Security Center. Go to "Device Performance and Health" and click "Additional Info" under Fresh Start. It will uninstall all the unwanted apps and programs and give you a fresh copy of Windows 10. IT takes about an hour though but its worth it and makes a huge difference. And then also I uninstalled all the programs I didn't need. I also set the number of processors to 2. Type "System" in the search box and go to "System Configuration" go to "BooT Tab" and then "Advanced Options" CLick on box that says "No. of processors" and click on down arrow to change to 2. Now you have both working processors. Enjoy your faster laptop.

Great for the money.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. You have to understand what you're buying here. You're not getting a high end gaming laptop here, it's a low end APU with 4gb of DDR4 RAM. That being said, you can use this for youtube/netflix/working on papers very easily. I myself am using this for lightweight java programming on the go. Upgrade to 8GB of Ram, get rid of ALL of the bloatware, and decrease the screen resolution to 720p and you will be completely fine with this budget machine.

Slow!!!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this laptop in anticipation to starting school again soon, being that my other Dell Inspiron is 9 years old and it's a miracle that it still somewhat works. However, this Dell Inspiron sucks! I've had it less than a week and it's extremely slow. Web pages load slowly, downloads take forever, switching between tabs on the browser is slow, opening any kind of folder or file is slow...it's like everything is on a delay, which is maddening being that the whole purpose of me buying a new laptop was because my old one is old and also incredibly slow...and just out of nowhere while watching a video on Facebook, the whole laptop just shut down for no reason and said that "Windows has trouble restarting" Like seriously, Dell?! It's a brand new laptop!!! I'm so glad that school hasn't started for me yet because had I been in the middle of doing an assignment during this sudden shutdown, I would've been quite upset. I've used this laptop maybe 3 times in less than 7 days; it's not worth the trouble. I'm angry, and I'm taking it back.

Save your money
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. All of my previous Dell computers have been amazing, so I had no hesitation buying this one. A few months into it, it would not boot properly and eventually it began beeping like it was going to blow up. This was shortly after an update. I took it to a Dell repair and got a new battery and adapter... it worked ok for a day and then completely died. Save your money. The price is amazing, but the repair bill will be almost as much as a new laptop.

Posted .Hello Amanda,
We appreciate your review and we're sorry that you're faced with the problem of your computer not starting up now. We're sure this can be frustrating but we do have some troubleshooting steps for you to try:
1. If the computer is displaying the Dell logo and does not move past that point, it has probably failed POST.
2. If the power indicator lights up and it is amber or orange, this is usually an indicator that it has failed POST.
3. If you see text on a black screen, the computer is currently performing the POST. If the computer stays in that condition and does not move past it, it has probably failed POST.
4. If the video screen displayed anything at all during the startup process but is now black, this probably indicates that the computer failed POST.
5. If the computer is beeping or if Caps/Num/Scroll Locks are flashing, note if there is a particular pattern in which it beeps or flashes.
6. If the computer is not beeping and caps/num/scroll locks are not flashing, unplug all connections and remove all media communication devices (e.g. external monitors); reconnect one at a time and check if the computer functions.
7. For a notebook, press and hold the Fn key and then press the power button. This starts the pre-boot testing and will launch ePSA. In case you have a Desktop at the Dell logo screen tap the F12 key to enter One Time Boot Menu and use the arrow keys to highlight Diagnostics and press enter.

Great, lightweight, great for school
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Very lightweight. Soft keyboard. Good for multitasking. However, a little slow when first setting up. I am very happy with this purchased. I needed it for school and to watch DVDs. It is a really good buy. At first I was a bit skeptical, but once I saw it and started using it, I was very pleased.

Big mistake buying this one
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've always had good luck with Dell laptops in the past so I thought this would be a good one. Two days after taking it out of the box, and using it a total of 3 hours, it started having issues. It would not boot, giving me an error message. Then it tried to repair itself but said the automated repair could not fix the issue. I wound up having to restore to an earlier point. That worked the first THREE times it did this, but tonight even the restore failed. So I am sitting here with what amounts to a $250 paperweight. After a whole three hours of use. What a piece of junk. Not to mention the fact that it is terribly slow, slower than any other laptop I've ever owned, and every time I touch the mousepad, the text on the screen changes size.

Posted .Hello Kimberly,
We appreciate your feedback on your Dell laptop and we're sorry that it's not working the way you'd like it to. Here are some tips to help with the responsiveness of your touchpad:
Some Notebooks and Tablets with Keyboards have added gesture features to the touchpad hardware and drivers. A few of these features are two or three finger scrolling, pinch zoom, circle zoom, rotate and swiping. These new features may be the reason for the erratic cursor movement since most are turned on by default. You can disable or modify the way the features work in the touchpad driver properties. Here are some tips to modify these settings:
1. In the Search box, type main.cpl.
2. Touch or click main.cpl in the list of programs.
3. Touch or click the Dell Touchpad tab.
4. Touch or click on the picture of the touchpad.
5. Touch or click Gestures (depending on your computer there may not be a Gestures option).
6. Change the options as preferred.
7. Touch or click Save.
8. Touch or click the X in the upper-right corner to close the Dell Touchpad Utility.
9. Touch or click OK on the Mouse Properties window. 10. If the touchpad still does not work after following the preceding steps, refer to Dell Knowledge Base article - http://dell.to/2iaiujA.
You can read the full article here - http://dell.to/2tqmS02.
If you'd like to diagnose the slowness on your computer you can run the Windows Performance Troubleshooter by following these steps:
1. Close all open windows.
2. Press the Windows logo key + X key on the keyboard.
3. Click Control Panel.
4. Click System and Security.
5. Under Security and Maintenance, select Troubleshoot common problems.
6. Under System and Security, click Run maintenance tasks.
7. Follow the on-screen instructions and prompts to complete the process.
8. Restart the PC.

Dell should be ashamed
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Taking into account ever-evolving technology, I would have to say this is the worst computer I’ve ever bought. I’ve never had a computer that essentially didn’t work upon purchase—not even the 10-year-old tower I bought at a yard sale. I am very happy with my Linux tower and Chromebook for my computing needs, but I recently accepted a job that requires the Windows platform. I decided to get an affordable laptop that I would do all my work on for this job specifically. I wasn’t going to do anything but use Microsoft Office and the job-related program (which wasn’t bulky by any means). No games. No watching Netflix. Not even any social media or heavy web surfing. I was utterly appalled the first few times I booted this computer up. No big deal, i thought—it’s a Windows platform and those generally require some updates before they function at top efficiency. Updates and days passed. I uninstalled all bloatware. Nothing improved this laptop. It remained slow and incapable of handling one task at a time—let alone doing more than one. It was unusable. It’s like buying a new car and having to replace the engine immediately. I had to borrow my boyfriend’s decade old Sony Vaio—which worked better than this computer!—to complete my work. I’ve reinstalled windows and upped the processor number (another reviewer has detailed instructions on how to do this) and that at least has made it useable. But what if I were a novice? I would have no IDEA what to do with this utter piece of crap. Dell, you should be ashamed of selling this. There’s affordable, and then there’s unusable. This computer clearly falls under the latter category. BestBuy, I hope you reconsider selling these laptops. They are of little to no use to anyone and you could very well lose customer trust because of them. If I could blow this laptop up I would.

Battery Wont Hold a Charge
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this for my daughter before she went to college. The only way she could use it is if it stayed plugged in. Nearly 4 months later, the battery won't hold a charge at all. I do not know who to contact or how to resolve this issue. She is asking for a new laptop for Christmas, due to this fact.

Posted .Hello Rissa,
We're sorry to hear about the battery troubles that your daughter's computer is having. Dell offers a One Year Limited Warranty on our products that you can read more about here: http://dell.to/2tNsVOs.
If you feel like the battery on your daughter's laptop is defective you can always reach out to Dell's Technical Support Team here for further assistance: http://dell.to/2sH7Qlm. If you'd like tips on extending the battery life you can try these:
Change the Power Plan:

You do have the option to enable or disable this mode within settings or within advanced Battery Saver settings, you can customize the mode to best suit your needs.
a) Click on the Action Center icon in the taskbar and select the tile for Battery Saver.
b) If running Cortana then type Battery Saver into the search box and select from the results.
Within the Battery Saver settings page, you will be able to turn on and off the feature and customize the feature to best meet your needs.
c) Turn Battery Saver On or Off.
d) Additional settings available via the Battery use and Battery saver settings links.
e) Battery use shows further info on apps and their power usage.
f) Battery Saver Settings screen allows you to customize further Battery Saver feature.

Awesome deal
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.CPU and GPU is good enough to handle many tasks which the average users will do. Upon first use the computer may seem a bit slow however, this is due to windows updates which after completing the system will operate quite nicely. Dell did a great job and Best Buy is the best place to shop.

Not a good computer
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I went through the set up and got online right away. This computer ran slow as my computer from 25 years ago on dial up. After the first time online, I could not even get online. I only need a computer to get online while traveling and this did not even meet those meager needs. I took it back to the Rapid City store and exchanged it for a HP. It cost $170 more but it runs 1,000 times better. Spend a little bit more money and get a better computer. I have two Dell towers for my home computer and have not had problems. This is not a product that will meet anyone's needs.

SLOW and constantly crashes waste of money
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Don't be lured in by the low price and large screen size! This is a worthless computer. I'm not sure which ones all these people with positive reviews got, but I got a lemon then. From day one it didn't work well, so I deleted all the useless apps it came bloated with and unpinned everything off the start menu and barely had a file saved on it and it still ran terribly slow and crashed often so I called Dell Tech support and this is nothing against tech support centers being out of the country, but I could barely understand the person I was speaking with because of their accent and a terrible phone connection. After he had me run the diagnostic tests (Support Assistant) which I'd already done myself, he concluded the computer was running fine. That may be "fine" for Dell, but even the most reasonable person would find the speed and crashing problems of this computer unacceptable, so save your money as you'll just be wasting it on this one. Unfortunately I made the mistake and can't return it because I moved to an island where there is no Best Buy and shipping it back would cost probably as much as the computer is worth. Should have bought a HP and spent the extra money and gotten a computer I could trust and rely on.
