A fine machine that's hard to beat
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It’s fairly light weight. has an aluminum case and build. No bending with the screen when opening it. The audio sounds good for its size, Backlit keyboard feels good (key travel wise), battery life is very good with proper settings, touch screen works well with fingers and a Dell pen. The Core i7 U series is snappy even without having to run the fan, and the fan is quiet when it does run. Fast 16 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD. 3.5 mm Audio jack. 2 USB-C ports with one for charging. Camera has a mechanical shutter for guaranteed visual privacy. Fingerprint reader works very well. Read on for details. The WUXGA screen looks good, but has a very limited color gamut with 45% SRGB typical. Slow SD card reader. Only 1 USB-A port. Little pointy feet on the hinge can poke into bare legs and be annoying when using it in laptop mode. I’m going to examine how well this PC works and where it could be better. Benchmarks for the SSD, SD card reader and overall performance rating. Color calibration results and thermal camera photos of where it gets warm and how warm. I’m not going to relist all the specs as those are already in the product description. I will compare it to a higher end Dell 16 inch 4k OLED 2 in 1 I reviewed last year, throughout the review. Setup was typical Windows 11 and pretty easy. The specs quote an Intel Core i7 1355U CPU and 16 GB of 4800 mhz LPDDR 5 RAM. I think that’s why performance rivals the higher end model I reviewed last year, even though the CPU in it is higher specced. I’ll explain what I mean as simpl as I can. The 13 in 1355 is the CPU generation. The U means low power consumption. Other CPUs may end with P or H. The P series is a little faster. H series are among the fastest Intel chips used in laptops. Example: The Dell from last year has a Core i7 1260P. It has 4 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores. The computer under review has a Core i7 1255U and it has 2 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores. Even though the CPU has a little less performance spec wise, the incremental improvement over last year's model and the much faster RAM, 4800mhz vs 3200mhz, is why I think this PC’s performance is on par with the higher end one from last year. More Performance cores and faster RAM do make a difference in any PC. But in the case of these 2 laptops, the faster RAM gives the lesser performing CPU an edge. See photos. The SSD (solid state drive) on this PC is also faster than last years and double the capacity. See photos. I think the end of the “chip shortage” is part of the reason. More higher specced chips are available. Heat and noise are pretty well controlled. It rarely ran the fan unless I was watching videos and fast forwarding through them or taxing it running a benchmark. Just to browse the web and white this review, the fan doesn’t kick on and it stays cool. When the fan runs at low, it’s very quiet. Even at high it’s a lot quieter than the 16” Dell 2 in 1 from last year. Plus, the fan in it cycled all the time. Even when not under a workload. I took photos of it with my thermal camera at idle and under a benchmark load. Top and bottom. See photos. I like the feel of the keyboard. Good travel and tactile feel and the keys are very slightly dished. Backlit with 2 levels of illumination. While typing this review I noticed that I never got a “palm glitch” on the touchpad moving the cursor or pointer. The touchpad works perfectly. Unlike the other Dell I’ve talked about. It had some issues. The touchpad is very responsive no matter what configuration you have it in. I have the Dell pen that came with the other 2 in 1, and it works perfectly here. The webcam works well and is pretty clear with a good picture. You can use it with Microsoft Hello as well. It has a physical shutter that you can slide over the lens for guaranteed visual privacy. The fingerprint scanner works perfectly on this PC and the other Dell. Easy to set up too. The audio sounds good given the size of the PC. The audio is not as good when used as tablet, tent or stand, but noticeably better when used as a laptop. Bluetooth and WiFi 6 have good range and I didn’t experience any dropouts. I have an ASUS - RT-AX82U AX5400 Dual-Band WiFi 6 Router. If there’s one major weakness to this PC, it’s the Color Gamut. I was surprised to get a 63% sRGB result when I used my datacolor Spyder to calibrate the screen. The color gamut is the range of colors a screen can display. There are several color gamuts that are used and sRGB is the most common that a display is judged by. A good quality LCD panel should produce about 96% or higher sRGB color gamut. This PC is rated at 45% sRGB. This is quoting the manufacturer's specs and Dells. The LCD panel is an LG LP140WU2 with 8 bits per channel color depth, 1000 to 1 contrast ratio, IPS with WLED backlighting. Dell should have put a better panel in it, in my opinion. Despite this, I think the screen looks pretty good and the average user won’t notice the difference. But you won’t get any HDR10 out of it and I wouldn’t recommend it for editing photos unless you connect an external monitor that has a higher specced color gamut. The other weakness is the built-in SD card reader. It’s slow. It’s 3 times slower than when using my high speed external card reader with a fast card. Why it matters: It’s not fast enough to read 4k video without stuttering or freezing. I ran into this on the other Dell when trying to view 4k videos from my DJI Mavic 3C drone. It didn’t matter that this has an FD screen. It froze anyway. Not a crash freeze or blue screen of death. Even if you connect this to a 4k monitor or TV, it won’t play 4k from an SD card in the built-in reader no matter how fast the card is. Copy files to the SSD first and you’re good to go. McAfee pop-ups are annoying and can be turned off. Battery life varies depending on battery settings. Set to the lowest power consumption I think you can get about 8 hours or more out of it. I couldn’t find any info of run time in the product description or at Dell’s website. But I found this: “Reach up to 80% battery charge within 60 minutes.” ExpressCharge must be enabled within Dell Power Manager software. System must be powered off or in hibernation mode for ExpressCharge feature to function. But from what battery level? My Logitech MX Bluetooth keyboard works great with it in tent mode. Conclusion: For me, this is an easy “Highly Recommended”. I like the size, build and speed of it. I like that the fan rarely ever kicks on with web browsing and watching videos. Add the 2 in 1 design and touch screen that’s pen compatible and you have a winner in my book. Compared to the higher end 2 in 1 I reviewed last year, I like this one a little better, it’s lighter, smaller and as fast. Only the screen and card reader disappoint, but not enough to not give it 5 stars. The deficiency in the color gamut isn’t that obvious and I don’t plan on editing photos on it. I have the OLED 2 in 1 for that as well as another PC and a monitor for that. They both have a P3 color gamut that’s wider than sRGB.
