    Great computer but misleading

I love this laptop. I love the tablet capabilities, I love the screen quality, I love the keyboard, really I love just about everything about it. The only thing I'm upset about is that this model isn't compatible with the Dell Active Pen. Even though this is the case, when I bought this laptop, it had a sticker on it, right by the keyboard, that says it's Active Pen compatible. I excitedly bought the Active Pen, just to find that the driver isn't supported with this laptop model, and that the pen can only be used for shortcuts (one click opens Windows Ink, etc.). I love this computer, but I'm displeased that it's advertised as supporting the Active Pen when it does not.

This computer is fantastic for doing your basic needs without any issues. You can do your word processing, email, presentations, and web browsing without a hitch with the Intel i5 inside and 8gb of RAM. The 2TB HDD is a bit on a slow side wishing they used a 7200 rpm hdd at least or ideally a SSD bit it good enough and is ample amount of space. The screen is a LCD screen and is also a touch screen. Also has some Biometric unlocking feature using your face

Okay, so, I'm a college student and on a really tight budget (probably like yourself, if you're considering a Dell). Recently, my good ol', faithful laptop of 8 years died out on me. I take online classes, so a computer is a MUST for me. I was between 3 laptops in the same price range: This, the Dell Inspiron 2-in-1 13.3 inch, and the HP Pavilion x360 2-in-1 14 inch. All are under $700. I decided to go with this because it had pretty good reviews, I disregarded the reviews about poor battery life and slow speed. I thought people were exaggerating-- they weren't! If you don't care about speed, or are trying to bridge the gap between a tablet and a PC, this will be just fine for the price point. However, this laptop is NOT DESIGNED for college students: It has extremely poor battery life (begins dying after only 2-3 hours of moderate use!) Thankfully, I do most of my schoolwork from home, but this is NOT ideal for the commuter student. You'll end up with nothing to takes notes on halfway through lecture, or it might begin installing updates at a really inconvenient time. It's also INCREDIBLY slow: This laptop is supposed to handle multitasking well, but it just disappoints. It can't handle multiple tabs or apps open, and begins glitching (freezing and closing windows). I also agree with the person below who said the updates were annoying. The computer seemed to have an update EVERY TIME I turned it on and it would constantly notify me of updates, which is annoying when you just need to get work done (Ugh! Hello, Dell! I REALLY don't have 30 mins for you to update everytime I start up!) As far as transportability, the design is modern, sleek, and attractive (almost looks like an Apple Macbook) but it's rather heavy. Initially, I thought I just couldn't get used to it because I was coming from an ASUS laptop with Windows 7 (don't even get me started on Windows 10-- A FREAKING NIGHTMARE!). Dell puts a TON of "bloatware" on these PCs. For those of you who don't speak computer lingo, "bloatware" are additional apps and programs that are factory installed on the PC when you buy it, and if you try to uninstall programs to speed it up, you can actually uninstall a critical code that makes your PC function. Trust me when I say that I really did everything (and researched everything) I could to keep this computer and make it work. I loved the design and I loved the price... I waited 7 days to adjust and just couldn't, so I returned it a week later at my local BestBuy. As much as I was resisting Apple (high price point and delicate products) I just caved in and bought a MacBook Air. If you're sold on this, go ahead and try it out. It may suit your needs and you have a 15-day full-refund policy if you change your mind. Honestly, I love my new MacBook (And I got it for $300 cheaper because it was an open box, in Excellent condition, Geek Squad certified). Oh, and don't buy this PC at full price, I bought mine on Sale for Memorial Day at $599!

    Trade offs

Iv'e learned that computers are all about trade offs. This is a nice average laptop for everyday use. Yes it's a little overweight, and it could be faster. That being said it has almost the same specs as my 2013 Desktop! It's got a massive hard drive for storing every work document, and photo you can imagine. The full HD display and slim bezel make this feel like a much more expensive machine. The screen is also very responsive and i like that I can fold it up for tablet use when needed. Could it be lighter, faster, and more tricked out yes, but then it would cost a fortune.

Did I mention it was slow? I really wanted to like this PC. I've been happy with DELL products in the past. The build quality was very nice. Having gotten used to SSD's trying to go with a 5400RPM HD was a huge step backwards. Felt like it was back in time. The slowness is reason enough to return it. Add to that the battery was draining like crazy. I put it to sleep at about 1:00AM. The next morning it had dropped from 90-something % to 40%. Really? Even with all the great Win10 power saving features? (I'm being sarcastic) The only way this thing would last the number of hours that DELL claims would be with the monitor brightness turned to the minimum and WiFi turned off. If that wasn't bad enough I decided to wipe this thing before returning and it warns you that it can take "several hours" Now THAT is an accurate time estimation. I started the process, made reservations, took my family to dinner, ran some errands on the way home and when I got home and checked on the status is was at 10%. I'm serious. That was three hours after initiating the reset. To summarize: 1) SLOW, SLOW, SLOW 2) no amount of storage space is worth how painfully slow this thing is 3) Windows is still has a long way to go - error codes upon boot-up (and each boot-up that followed), right out of the box, after all the updates from Microsoft. Unacceptable. 4) Power cable/charging block feel really cheap. It wouldn't last very long if this thing was taken on the road for work every day. 5) Display was decent. Though at times text appeared crisp and clear, then other times it was blurry. It's not my eyes. I'm used to looking at retina displays so I'm a little critical of anything less, but this thing (maybe it's just the software) was inconsistent in the sharpness of text. 6) I wish I could include a photo of the ubiquitous error code I got at boot-up each time. But Window's built in snipping tool wouldn't capture the error box, only what's displayed behind it. Built-in plausible deniability for Microsoft. Windows is the Nathan Thurm of computer operating systems. "Error? What error? (starts sweating) I didn't notice any error? (nervous laughter followed by a puff on a cigarette)"

    2 things hold it back

This is a solid feeling laptop. For the basic user I think this is a good laptop at the right price. But those that will use it for work or school or both will need to upgrade one key part. The hard drive is a bottleneck for the CPU and the whole laptop in general. It can take 1 minute and 43 to boot at certain times. My old sony has an ssd and boots up in 15 seconds on windows 7. This can be fixed easily by purchasing a ssd. But the second flaw is battery life, I'm only getting upwards of 3-4 hours and by today's standards that is terrible. Still debating if I should keep it or return as the battery life literally dropped 3 percent in 10 minutes just browsing the internet on power saver mode.

      MSR1,

We appreciate your review and we're sorry that your battery life is not what you were hoping for. We'd recommend the following tips to improve your battery life:

      Change the Power Plan:

      1. On the notification area of the taskbar, right-click the Battery icon.
      2. On the options list, click Power Options.
      3. Select a power plan on the battery meter, such as Power Saver or Balanced. Windows 10 has a built in 'Battery Saver' mode that can be activated to extend your system's battery life. The Battery Saver mode will monitor and limit background activity and other features such as push notifications. You do have the option to enable or disable this mode within settings or within advanced Battery Saver settings, you can customize the mode to best suit your needs.

      a) Click on the Action Center icon in the taskbar and select the tile for Battery Saver.
      b) If running Cortana then type Battery Saver into the search box and select from the results.
Within the Battery Saver settings page, you will be able to turn on and off the feature and customize the feature to best meet your needs.
      c) Turn Battery Saver On or Off.
      d) Additional settings available via the Battery use and Battery saver settings links.
      e) Battery use shows further info on apps and their power usage.
      f) Battery Saver Settings screen allows you to customize further Battery Saver feature.

You can read the full article here - http://dell.to/2vfXWf4.

We hope this helps improve your overall battery runtime.

I tried to be optimistic but...

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Bought this computer despite the fear that it would have some issues and my fear was right this time. I really wanted to like it, thougt the appearance and tablet ability were very appealing as I love drawing digitally, but it was impossible. Straight out of the box it has major issues, can barely load a single webpage or program and failed when it tried to update Windows. It restarted 5 times in the first 1 hr I started using itIt is extreeemely slow even when youre not using it. It freezes literately every 2 seconds and hiccups with audio and video are very frequent. Way cheaper computers I’ve used 5-8 years ago had astoundingly better performance. It also wont automatically switch the audio to your headphones when you plug them in, it continues to play through speakers until a pop up appears and asks you if you want to switch. Terrible design!!!! It does look nice! The physical computer itself has a good look to it and is nice and sleek, the keypad is not great but ok. The screen is actually lovely but way too dim. I didnt take it off full brightness at all when using it even in pitch darkness, and I always lower my other screens down to much lower settings even when using them outside. I received this error message but honestly I’m just not interested in trying to fix something that is unusable straight out of the box...

Have had this laptop for 2 months. Morning - dell update - and that was the end of the end. These home computers are loaded with BitLocker and it was activated. Only the Pro version is supposed to have this option, which is not what we have. We did not know this and it wouldn't have made a difference anyway. Known issues with certain dell updates. Now computer is locked and encrypted and the only suggestion from dell was to do a hard reset. There goes 2 months of transferring and working on my saved jobs. Thank goodness Best Buy is working with us on this issue. I will never purchase another dell product.

I have had this computer for three weeks now and am very frustrated with it. It has been very slow. For some reason some applications have not been working either, but it's impossible to reach Dell customer service for their assistance. When I finally got someone on the phone, they told me that I had to pay for a software warranty in order to answer any questions about software not working, despite the fact that the computer was literally brand new. This will be the last Dell product I buy.

      DRH1,

We are sorry to hear about the troubles that you're having with your new Dell computer. We'd recommend limiting the programs that launch at startup with these steps:

      1. Close all open windows.
      2. Press CTRL + Shift + ESC key together on the keyboard.
      3. In the Task Manager window, click Startup tab.
      4. Select the program or application that you want to disable from loading during startup.
      5. Right-click and select Disable.
      6. Repeat Step 4 & 5 for all the programs or applications that you want to disable from loading during startup.
      7. Restart your PC.

You can read the full article here - http://dell.to/2tSulGV.

For help with the freezes that you're experiencing you can try these steps:

      1. Run a Computer Diagnostic. To determine if your computer is experiencing a hardware problem, run the Dell Preboot System Assessment (PSA) Diagnostics. For information on how to run Diagnostics, and to determine the issue, refer to Dell Knowledge Base Article: http://dell.to/2iaiujA.
      2. Check Safe Mode for Symptoms. To boot into safe mode, please follow the instructions below:
      a) Start the computer.
      b) Tap 'F8' on the keyboard immediately and every one second until the Dell logo screen disappears. From there you will see the Windows Advanced Options Menu on the screen. (If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, restart the system and try again.)
      c) Select Safe mode with Networking and press Enter.
      d) Log on as the administrator or as a user with administrative access.
      e) Open applications and test the computer in safe mode. If the symptoms exist in safe mode, please continue the troubleshooting steps in this article. If the symptoms do not exist in safe mode, the issue is likely related to a driver or software and you may wish to complete steps 6 to see if you are able to resolve the lockups or freezing.
      6. Check for Malware. Malware (Virus, Spyware, etc.) can definitely cause a Windows system to lock up or appear to hang. To check for malware on your system and to ensure that your computer is up to date on security software, visit Dell Knowledge Base Article: http://dell.to/2wWP1zI.
