This is a very nice laptop. It is sufficiently fast and light weight. It comes with 8g of memory and a 256g SSD drive. It charges quickly and battery life appears to be outstanding. It has multiple USB A/C inputs along with an SD card reader which is a nice plus. The keyboard has a nice tactile feel to it and works well. I do wish it were backlit. It also is touch screen capable which for my needs is great and works well. The screen is HD and not 4K but I don’t normally watch movies on a laptop. The screen is actually very bright and has a very good picture quality. The laptop looks very premium with a metal lid and plastic back in silver. It has a built-in camera with a cover that works well and will be good for video conferencing. I wasn’t familiar with the Snapdragon processor and thought it might be slow but I was surprised at actually how fast the laptop performs. It’s also very quiet as this does not require a fan for cooling. I have several high-performance laptops and desktop computers and was not looking for a work computer although I think a lot of people could use this for work. I wanted something that was easy to take to different rooms in my house when I am watching TV to research things on the internet and check my emails and this is perfect. I synced it to my One Drive account and everything loaded right up and gave me the screen look I am used to. I don’t do a lot of videos or photos that require storage space so I am not concerned about the hard drive size and 256g should be more than sufficient. The laptop runs Windows 11 in S mode so there are some limitations as to what applications you can run but again this is not an issue for me. I really like this laptop and the price is very reasonable. I actually paid more for a tablet without a keyboard and a smaller screen so this is actually a bargain. I think Dell did a really good job with this laptop. I would definitely recommend it. I am giving it 4 stars only because of the lack of a lighted keyboard. I use it a lot in low light conditions at night and a lighted keyboard would really improve the experience.

Hello SharanyaP,
Thank you for taking the time to leave us your review. We regret to learn that your experience with the Dell Inspiron 14 3420 Touch Screen Laptop has not met expectations due to challenges encountered during the installation of third-party software. This is certainly not the experience we like to hear from our valued customers. Furthermore, we are constantly striving to make improvements, and reviews like yours help us develop products that our customers like.
Windows 11 in S mode operating system is designed for security and performance, exclusively running apps from the Microsoft Store. If you want to install an app that isn't available in the Microsoft Store, you'll need to switch out of S mode. Switching out of S mode is one-way. If you make the switch, you won't be able to go back to Windows 11 in S mode.
Below I have provided a few steps to help you : 1. On your PC running Windows 11 in S mode, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation. 2. In the Switch to Windows 11 Home or Switch to Windows 11 Pro section, select Go to the Store. (If you also see an "Upgrade your edition of Windows" section, be careful not to click the "Go to the Store" link that appears there.) 3. On the Switch out of S mode (or similar) page that appears in the Microsoft Store, select the Get button. After you see a confirmation message on the page, you'll be able to install apps from outside the Microsoft Store.
If you continue to have problems after troubleshooting your laptop following the procedures outlined above, we would be happy to assist you in resolving the difficulties you are experiencing to your satisfaction. Please do not hesitate to contact a Dell representative using the details below. Chat or call: https://bit.ly/DellSupportTeam Phone number to Dell: 1-800-624-9896

This is not my first Dell laptop but it is my first computer that uses Windows 11. Takes a little getting used to this new operating system but it works pretty much like you’d expect Windows to work. It ships with S mode enabled which blocks you from installing apps through any place except the Microsoft store. I disabled that mode early on.
I needed a laptop to access a couple websites at work when I was away from my desk out in the shop so I picked this model up. I don’t need to save a lot of photos or documents and I won’t need to install too many apps so the small amount of storage isn’t an issue for me. 256 gb is minuscule when you’re used to multi-terabyte drives. I’m guessing they are expecting folks to leverage cloud storage? Upon boot up, it’s showing 195gb free. Speaking of boot up, I’m seeing about 15 seconds from the time I touch the power button to when I can enter my pass code to login. I was concerned that having a mobile CPU it might run slow but this Qualcomm Snapdragon processor seems to do nicely.
Another thing I like is that this laptop has no cooling fan or vents in the case. I’m using it in a dusty environment and the lack of a cooling fan to draw in dirt might help the life of this device.
Battery life so far has been great. I’m using it several hours a day and getting two days between charges out if it.
I usually prefer a trackball with a laptop but I found I didn’t need to add one since this device has a very responsive touch screen. That’s been handy. I’m finding I don’t need to use the touchpad very often either. Which is good because I don’t like touchpads so much. I’d probably like them better if I took the time to learn the multi-gesture stuff. I wonder if that means I’m getting old? Screen is bright and sharp, no complaints there. Easy to read even if you’re not directly in front of it.
I tried out the built in webcam, picture was good but I don’t know that I’ll use it much. There’s a little slide that covers the camera when it’s not in use.
It’s got a slot for micro SD card reading, I would have rather had a full size SD card slot I think. I have a couple machines that use the full size cards so that would have been better for me. There are inexpensive adapters out there so it’s not a big deal.
I wasn’t sure how I would like having no number keypad but I’m getting along without it. I do kinda wish it had that, I type a lot of numbers at work. I like the feel of the keyboard, it feels like a full size layout, it’s not cramped, the keys have enough “clicky” if you know what I mean. I appreciate that the cap lock button has a pilot light to indicate when it’s on.
I’m rating it at five stars for the value that it is for the features it has. If you need a small, easily portable, power efficient laptop for email and web surfing but don’t need a lot of storage for photos or videos then this may be the one for you.

Dell's Affordable Performance 14" Touch Laptop

I use both Mac and Windows machines for my work and home use. The Dell Inspiron 3420 14” Touch Laptop is my current Windows machine. The configuration on this system is 8GB (not upgradeable) of RAM and a 256GB SSD (upgradeable) and touts the Qualcomm Technologies Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 processor. The reasons for choosing this model were the affordability, low profile, fan-less operation and the 14” FHD LED touch screen. So far, the 3420 has lived up to my expectations.
What’s in the box: the Inspiron 3420 unit, a 65W AC adapter with USB-C connector, power cord and paperwork/quick start guide. The system ships with Windows 11 Home (S mode) and includes a Microsoft Office 30 Day Trial and Webroot Internet Security for 3 machines for 6 months. In terms of a quick start guide, it's straight forward as there is nothing to really set up. Connect the 2 pieces of the power cord and plug in the unit, and you’re ready to set up the system.
First Impressions:
Although the Dell Inspiron 3420 build is considered a budget or entry level system, it is very well made with a modern and low-profile build. The Platinum Silver cover is aluminum and there is a cool feature on the hinge that when opened will raise the keyboard towards the user. It’s small, lightweight, and streamlined with minimal in/outputs…2 x USB-C, 1 x USB-A and a headphone jack. Once turned on, the FHD touch screen (1920 x 1080 native resolution) is bright and the touch technology is crisp. There is no fingerprint reader or facial recognition for signing on, but a PIN can be easily setup instead.
Performance:
This system ships with Windows 11 Home with S mode which allows only apps from the Microsoft Store to be downloaded. This is done to keep the system clean of potential phishing and malware apps from other sources. I loaded up some of my everyday apps including Microsoft Office and proceeded to open a few up and run multiple apps simultaneously. I then joined a Zoom video meeting to put it into a real world environment. The Inspiron 3420, even with just 8GB RAM plugged along as quickly as my current MacBook Air. Applications and windows opened quickly and the video meeting was without any issues or lag. The Qualcomm Adreno 618 graphics card is up to the challenge of streaming videos but would probably leave many gamers less impressed, but remember this is a “budget” system.
Battery Life:
First off, the 65W power cord is very compact and great for the road warriors out there. There is a charging indicator light on the front edge of the charging brick to confirm charging. The battery life is excellent due to the processor and fan-less cooling process. The Inspiron 3420 ran for hours on battery power while I used MS Office apps and watched a couple YT videos.
Other Features:
The keyboard is full size which makes it nice for the power users out there. There is a nice haptic touch on the keys and the keys have a “grippy” feel to them. The touchpad is well sized and responds and supports multi-touch gestures.
The 14” FHD touchscreen is very responsive if using the touchscreen feature. The display is bright and the finish seemed to help reduce fingerprints and smudges as well. The viewing angle, brightness and smooth graphics all make for an above average user experience.
Pros:
- Very well built and modern sleek design is a plus for anyone looking to take the system on the road
- Compact size
- Very quick boot up
- Fan-less for quiet operation and extended battery life
- Full sized keyboard with great key touch and throw
- Display is bright and easily viewable, even in brighter environments
- Ease of setup and use
Cons:
- No fingerprint of facial recognition for start up
- No backlighting on the keyboard
Overall, the Dell Inspiron 3420 14” laptop is a very well-made system with enough processing power to support most entry to mid-level users out there. This system is lightweight and sleek and great for use at home, the office or on the road. I would certainly recommend this laptop for anyone looking for an affordable daily use laptop.

I was never a huge fan of Dell until recently our business switched to Dell and I then became a believer. This Inspiron 3420 is just the right size laptop for my needs. I use it mainly in my workshop and have it connected to my CNC machine. The fact that it is touchscreen is a win/win situation for me, I have a mouse connected to it but most of the time I now find myself using the touchscreen far more which makes moving the machine into place or jogging it to a new position so much easier.
It is lightweight and very portable to use. I opened the packaging and w/ in a few minutes I had the laptop up and running and downloading all the programs that I need to use w/ my CNC machine, plus several other programs that I use to design the items that I make. That entire process went very smoothly.
As I said, most of the time in the PC world I had to use another manufacturer until recently and once I began using our company computer I had purchased a Dell laptop for my youngest son to use in his first year of college. And I love the Customer Service that helped me w/ that process to the point I was sold on Dell. This laptop is just the right size at 14” and it’s very well made, I also like the price point that this Dell sells for. If you are in the market for a very well made and affordable laptop, look no further than the Dell - Inspiron 3420! You won’t be disappointed.
