Great starter laptop for students and new grads

Dell’s Inspiron 7000 2-in-1 14” is a very good starter laptop computer for students, recent grads, aspiring creatives, or light gamers on the go.
Other reviewers have commented on the rather minimalistic unboxing, and I for one was super thankful I didn’t have a boatload of plastic nonsense to throw away on unboxing (most of it cannot be recycled anyway). The trash was minimal and it’s a pitch-perfect approach for the audience of this particular laptop.
The hinge design is actually one of my favorites I've seen in 2-in-1s lately. It's both smooth and substantive all at once - and comparing to a tablet+kickstand+keyboard combo (like the Surface), you'll love the ability to change the angle of the computer without it falling over and/or forcing awkward angles. It feels both lightweight and stable, which is a surprising rarity for 2-in-1’s, and Dell doesn’t disappoint here.
There was a minimum amount of pre-loaded nonsense, which is a time-saver very much appreciated as my family’s IT person who regularly sets up new devices. Out of the box, it was good to go within about 30 minutes of setup time which seems to be pretty normal these days on Windows machines. The battery life so far has been outstanding. I haven’t needed to try out the Express Charge™ options, but it’s nice they’re included.
I really liked the advent of the mechanical webcam cover, what I did not like was the comparatively low quality of the ONLY cam on the computer — too low of a quality to allow for facial recognition (which is probably why they included the fingerprint reader?). There is no back-facing webcam like you find on laptops in the 14-17” range, and I don’t really want to attach an external webcam, but it’s “good enough” if you’re just doing video meetings with your team/cohort. The fingerprint reader also makes a lot of sense in a world with masks in classroom settings, where this laptop is likely going to find a huge amount of viability.
The touchscreen is responsive and works well with the Microsoft pen stylus, and it has a magnetic attach point for the pen on both the left and right sides of the screen. The touchpad is a nice size and has no weird pressure points, the keyboard is also nice to type on — no surprises there (for work laptops you don’t need crazy high-end, you just want it to do its job reliably, and it does here).
The brightness of the screen and viewing angles are very good and they’re telling the truth about the minimal bezel. You won’t get crazy resolution out of this device or 4K (not really important in the context). You WILL get versatility and battery life, which is important in a laptop for students and new grads.
The placement and number of the included ports (USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, and MicroSD) are also very good and support almost everything an aspiring creative will be using. The inclusion of Wireless AX/Wi-Fi 6 alongside a generous 512GB SSD HD virtually guarantees this laptop could survive an entire HS or College stretch.
I have no complaints about this laptop at all - it’s exactly what it should be, and in the context of a starter laptop for a student, or a recent grad’s first computer, or a creative work laptop or portable “good enough” gaming machine, it’s a very good option to consider.

I love this laptop. I would recommend this for anyone in school, anyone just wanting a quality laptop for any purpose. I purchased it 3 years ago and it is my everyday use. I connect it to my mobile hotspot from my phone and use it on long trips. its truly 10 out of 10 laptop. i love it so much that i accidently broke the way it attaches cause the laptop will flip backwards and you can still use the laptop screen and what not and NO that is not how it broke i sat something heavy on it and pushed up because i couldnt see under the box that i was placing down and didnt know it was there it was like a freak accident but one that happens with your computer and i paid like 560 bucks out of pocket to bestbuy to fix it because my warranty was over with but that literally half more than what the laptop is worth nowadays and that is jsut how important keeping this laptop was to me. the waulity is great and yes i mentioned an accident but trust me it is durable and holds charge for a really long time. I use it for school mostly but i of course have done zoom and many other things. the camera itself doesnt have the best quality but i think theres a way to change the setting i dont worry about that because the camera wuality when on a zoom call is great but the camera quality just wanting to take a photo with it is not great at all. so id recommend a good webcam but for quality and speed and just being all over reliable i recommend it.

I got this to replace a six-year-old Lenovo that had reached the end of its life. I probably would've stuck with Lenovo, but they no longer seem to offer any 14" models with two USB ports and a display output. There are some things I don't love about this one, but overall I'm satisfied.
Pros:
- Better ports than most laptops this size.
- As advertised of Ryzen processors, it's great at multi-thread tasks. This thing can run Matlab code ten times faster than my old Lenovo (dual-core 7th-gen Intel i5), no exaggeration.
- The keyboard feels good. I type a lot and I was concerned it'd be a downgrade, since Lenovo's supposed to have the best keyboards, but I actually slightly prefer this to the old one.
Cons:
- Average at single-thread tasks.
- The screen is too bright. Even at the dimmest setting, it was giving me constant headaches until I set up a screen dimmer.
- There's no refresh hotkey. (Seriously, what the heck?)
- The fan is loud, but not unbearably so.
- The power cord is unwieldy.

Great 2-in-1 Laptop

I was thrilled to get a new computer! As a student, it is crucial to have an efficient computer and this one is excellent for work and study. I have also been very pleased with the sound system and widescreen, which is especially good for streaming movies, shows, and videos whenever I need a break from work. The convertible feature adds to its versatility and offers an up-close look at whatever project or assignment I am working on. The touch screen feature gives the user so much control. Essentially, the computer has everything a modern user will need and so much more!
The set-up was fairly easy. The very first time I tested the computer, I was greeted by Cortana, which led me through the entire set-up process (I thought that was neat and entertaining). All it takes is signing in to your Microsoft account(s) and there is also an easy, optional feature that links the computer to your phone. It runs and starts up quickly, without lagging. One of my favorite parts of this computer is that it has 459 GB storage space! Storage is a crucial factor that I consider with all my devices because I love to keep all my photos and important files safely stored and I hate to have to delete some photos to make space for more. It is heavier than my last computer, but it is also a lot bigger. Nonetheless, it is still very portable and the battery life is amazing!
I always prefer having a mouse attached to my laptop and I often need to connect my devices, whether that is to connect my computer to a bigger monitor, import pictures from my camera, or charge my phone or headphones. I am happy that this computer has USB ports that enable all those necessary connections. Webcam quality can definitely improve, but it works well for a computer. The keyboard is smooth and easy-to-use.
I would definitely recommend this laptop to any student and to someone looking for a great every-day use computer. I am confident that this computer will last me a very long time and that it will adequately meet every one of my needs and expectations securely and reliably.

Reasonable 2-in-1

The pros of this product would be good battery life and light weight. The display really "pops" with nice colors, and looks large for a 14" display. There's a clever feature where - when using the keyboard in a tradition laptop mode - the bottom of the display serves to lift the front of the keyboard for better ergonomics. There's a unified "key" that serves both as the fingerprint reader as well as the power button.
The cons include performance limitations given the small form-factor. I'm accustomed to my home PC, which is based on an 11th Generation Intel processor, a lot of DDR4 memory, and a PCIe4 NVMe drive, so the comparison isn't necessarily a fair one. Like most smaller form-factor devices, getting enough information on the display can be challenging, but that's the nature of a smaller device. Lastly, I have dry hands, and I've yet to have a good experience with fingerprint readers. This is no exception - my fingers are hit or miss on the reader.
All in all, for the money this is a good deal, providing reasonable performance and solid features.

A powerful and affordable laptop. The screen clarity is great and streams well. I have been able to play some minor games to pass the time when I travel without issue. The new generation of mobile Ryzen chips were a great combination. The laptop battery lasts a long time and the touch screen works well. Overall I am very happy with the purchase.

Intel i7 or AMD Ryzen 7? Read This!

There are many good reviews of this laptop and I won't repeat here what others have already said. I've been going back and forth between this model (Inspiron 5410 with Intel Core i7-1195G7) and the very similar AMD equivalent (Inspiron 7415 with AMD Ryzen 7 5700U--link below).
I was so indecisive that I decided to give both a try. Here are my impressions and the comparison between the two:
Inspiron 7415 with AMD Ryzen 7 5700U
(This model)
Avg. performance (userbenchmark.com): Gaming 14-22, Desktop 59-87, Workstation 15-21
PROS:
+8 core processor provides better multi-core performance
+Lower power usage/better battery life
+In my opinion, the black finish (advertised as 'blue' but looks black to me) looks much nicer than the silver finish and gray keys of the i7 model. The black finish provides a nicer contrast especially with the backlit keyboard.
+Possibly slightly better sound (?)
CONS
-Poorer single/dual core performance across the board (significantly when the computer is running on battery power).
-Poor graphics performance. I had some problems of snow/flicker on my external monitor with TWO separate AMD laptops (using an HDMI to DVI cable). I returned the first, then got exactly the same issue on the second. In the end I resolved the issue on the AMD with a better dual-link cable. No issues at all with either cable on the i7.
Inspiron 5410 (Intel Core i7)
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-inspiron-2-in-1-14-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-512gb-solid-state-drive-silver/6458904.p?skuId=6458904
Avg. performance (userbenchmark.com): Gaming 24-27, Desktop 90-95, Workstation 21-24
PROS:
+Noticeably faster single/dual core processor performance. Very unscientifically, I opened the same (fairly resource heavy) program on both devices at the same time. It always finished loading first on the i7 device by a few seconds
+Iris Xe graphics card is better than the AMD Radeon card--though neither will provide fantastic graphics for high end gaming.
CONS:
-The i7 processor consumes more power, so this unit has a slightly shorter battery life than the AMD.
-Slower multi-core performance in contrast to the AMD Ryzen's 8 cores.
-Minor point, but matters to me: I find the gray keys on this silver model less aesthetically pleasing than the black finish on the AMD.
Basically, you can't go wrong with either unit. Both are nice computers. I purchased the i7 model on sale for $849 and this AMD unit on sale for $799. The price difference is proportionate to the performance edge of the i7. At the time of writing, I see that the AMD's sale has expired and the price is back to $999. With the Intel still at $849, it's a no brainer: go for the Intel i7 model.
I will probably (reluctantly) return the AMD and keep the i7, even though I prefer the looks of the AMD.

Love it. Works smoothly and best of all handles my photo editing Topaz software beautifully (in addition to Adobe Lightroom). Touch screen is so handy and easy to use. It also fits into my camera bag to take with me on trips. Great to fold over when watching streaming Netflix. I disagree with the graphics complaints. I'm an award winning fine art photographer and the colors on the screen are 'spot on' as the British would say. It does heat up a fair amount if left on one's lap for a period of time; however, most of the time I just use it at a desk or table. Fan noise is not that bad either as others have complained. Battery Life is excellent. My only regret is not getting a laptop such as this a lot sooner!

Bought this last year and it has been great. Very fast, solid screen, decent build (not a lot of flex), and crazy battery life. Faster than my work i7-1065g7 and 3x the battery life.
Keyboard layout is slightly shifted vs Latitudes which may take a bit to get used to switching back and forth. Wish it had a 2nd USB-C port as the charger is USB-C occupying the only port.

*For some context, I bought this laptop on sale for $849 instead of the suggested MSRP of $999. That being said, this is a great laptop for either price.*
Pros:
I had originally bought this laptop to use for college, however I'm finding more and more that I'm using it for media consumption and general use. The screen is great, especially when using it as a tablet and watching videos. Some people consider it a negative, but the 16:9 aspect ratio is great. It fills up the screen when watching a YouTube video and even tv shows and movies. The performance is quick and snappy, and it really shows when quickly going from completely off to signed in in a matter of seconds. With the Ryzen 5700x and Radeon graphics, gaming is also possible as long as you have realistic expectations. Games like Minecraft for Windows 10 and Roblox run great at the highest settings but e-sport titles like Valorant, Fortnite and Minecraft Java have to be set to low to get acceptable performance.
The build quality is great with the metal and plastic build. The hinge is sturdy and even raises the laptop up for better cooling when using it as a traditional laptop. The trackpad works well and is a decent size while the keyboard is similarly great along with the backlight.
Cons:
While most of the laptop is great, especially when considering the price, there are some drawbacks of it being cheaper. For starters while I mentioned the keyboard was great, there is some deck flex when pressing down along T, Y, G, and H. This only happens when fingertyping though and is easily solved by typing normally. The backlight on the keyboard, while a great feature, is often too dim while in a bright environment and doesn't look uniform when on.
The screen is great to look at but when viewed from off-axis the colors look a little off. It also doesn't get too bright, but as someone who exclusively uses it indoors, it's not a big deal. Lastly, while not a huge con, this laptop does lack some I/O. An additional USB-C port or even a USB-A would be great but then again, this is a sub-$1000 laptop.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, if considering a laptop, this is a great choice. The cons that I mentioned aren't too big of a deal and could even be considered quirks when looked at from a price to performance perspective. The pros definitely outweigh the cons and as an everyday-carry, this will be great for years.

Great PC/ tablet 2 in 1. This laptop has all the bells and whistles is super lightweight and very fast with 16 gigs of Ram a task that would take my 8 gig desktop one minute happens instantly with this machine. The only downside, and why I gave it a four star rating, is tablet functionality. FingerScrolling is great as crossover tablet/ PC function, and I honestly haven't figured it all out yet but, it appears there are some little setting tweaks I can do to improve usability i.e. on demand screen rotation. A comfortable case or stand while using the tablet only, would be nice.

Happy with my purchase so far. This is an upgrade from a very old Sony Vaio laptop. Use it mostly for school/zoom classes. Battery life is decent. One thing I did notice is if I wake my computer from sleep, any Internet browsers I had open were all blank white screens. Not sure if that’s normal, but all I have to do is minimize the windows and maximize and it opens back to normal. Super lightweight laptop. Haven’t used the touchscreen yet, but love that it has the capability. It was quite expensive for an everyday laptop but it was on sale so couldn’t say no.

I bought this laptop when it was on sale, $799. It is worth every penny. It is very fast, responsive and it has a very sharp screen.
This is my second Dell 2in1, the first one was Intel which had some issues on the motherboard, so that is why this time I just wanted to go with an AMD laptop, and I am so happy with my decision.
As an engineer and long-time Dell user, I highly recommend this laptop to anyone.
Also, in order to keep your laptop, drivers and system updated,
Don't forget to download the "Dell Support Assist", "Dell Update" and "AMD Radeon Software" apps. This is an important detail, so this way, you keep your laptop and system fast, responsive and updated.
