    Fits my needs perfectly.

The NVidia graphics card in this thing is leaps and bounds beyond the Intel integrated chipset you'll find in most other laptops of the same price range. For integrated graphics it's astounding. It will run most games (at least on low settings) eg. Fallout 3, Call of Duty 4, Civilization IV. I didn't buy it for games but am very pleasantly surprised at how well it does. It is one of the only PCs with this graphics card in it (it comes standard in Macs). When I hook it up to my HDTV via HDMI cable, it can't quite handle both displays at once without being glitchy (slightly). One display at a time, however, works beautifully. This is the only graphical issue I have had. It has a really convenient hotkey for changing display settings (toggle between monitor, tv, and both). I was also skeptical about glossy screens (vs. matte) but accepted it as a compromise as well since it's pretty much impossible to find a laptop with a matte screen anymore. My fears were unfounded, it's really not a big deal. If there is a glare you just change your position or screen tilt slightly. It is really lightweight (under 5 lbs.) but the screen is still large enough to be enjoyable and the keyboard is full size and feels nice. Buttons have a 'soft' feel to them. I didn't like this at first and accepted it as a compromise, but since owning it I have come to like it. One thing about this laptop is that its dimensions are not very conventional so it took me a while to find a case that fit it well. The InCase laptop case designed for the 13" Macbook fits it perfectly! It is really snug, don't settle for one that is loose fitting. You can buy them at BestBuy (you're welcome BestBuy). I assume other cases designed for the Macbook 13" will also fit well but I'm not sure. For the most part the body design is really solid, relative to most PC laptops. The battery does have a small "wiggle" to it, but this might not be a universal problem and it's really negligible. It does get hot, but most laptops do. This is my first laptop that I have owned so I don't have a real good basis of comparison for this. It is upgradable to 5 GB DDR3 RAM, but be forewarned, there is only 1 RAM slot. Apparently 1 GB of RAM is soldered into the motherboard and it comes preinstalled with a 2GB stick of RAM. If you were thinking about upgrading to 5 GB, know that at this time a single 4 GB stick of DDR3 RAM runs about 300-400 dollars. It runs very well on 3 GB, and I plan to upgrade as prices drop. It doesn't come with an optical drive, but this was a minor trade-off for me. I did buy an external CD/DVD burner that runs off 2 USB ports, mostly for installing programs or occasionally watching DVDs on my HDTV. I got one online for about 55 bucks. It's nice to have a legal version of Microsoft Office as well. Overall, great laptop. No real regrets after a month of ownership.

    Price, performance and perfection!

    Posted .

So I figured I'd write a bit more than an average review as this product has been amazing. Here is the windows experience index first off: Overall: 5.0 Processor: 5.0 RAM: 5.0 Graphics: 5.2 Gaming: 5.1 Hard Disk: 5.4 I was very impressed with the system overall. True there is no physical disc drive, but that isn't really an issue for me. Go use Alcohol 120% or Daemontools and simply mount ISOs from a flash drive or external HDD. That's what I have done for everything. As far as Ram, processor and hard drive go the performance has been great. No noticeable lag in the system operations and vista 64 with aero enabled runs perfectly smooth. This was kinda a shocker to me as few systems I have used that are laptops ran vista this smooth. As far as basic usage (i.e. internet, wifi, file transfers) I have no complaints and am overall impressed. The wireless N works as fast as my custom desktops PCI-e card and I have been able to max out my hard connection via wireless. Works just as I'd hoped it would! Gaming graphics and 3D performance may be a not some would be interested in. While I primarily use a gaming rig I went ahead and through World of Warcraft and a few other games on to test the performance. The Nvidia card really rises to the task. I was able to play WoW full screen with moderately high graphics absolutely lag free with ~60 fps. I would imagine you could get close to max graphics on WoW and most games should run in average graphics fine. For a laptop this is way more than acceptable. This pc is tiny and very portable so the graphics performance was unbelievable imo. If you really need absolute cutting edge graphics you probably want to use a desktop anyway as this screen is too small to notice the massive textures. So my graphics rating for this laptop as a laptop is 10/10. My rating for it compared to a desktop performance is about a 7/10 while I'd rate most laptops vs desktop around a 3/10. The graphics are very impressive. Battery life and portability are great. So I have been pretty much abusing the battery recently but here are some rough times. For constantly installing software off an external HDD I was able to get about 3.5 hours. Mind you the system was running at pretty full tilt the whole time. Playing WoW I was able to get around 3 to 3.5 hours of life. Using basic games around 4 hours. Browsing the internet and programming or taking notes in class with the wifi on I can get 5+ hours pretty easily. For all of my tests I just left the PC in the Dell Recommended settings. This battery life for the hardware is absolutely phenomenal. I'd say most people will get around the 5 hour mark when using it normally. I just gave an average of different times for different tasks to give you an idea of some of the expected times. You can see they are all over 3 hours which is just great! Also the system is very small and light (under 5 lbs). I love it. The keyboard is a good size and has a good layout. The keys are slightly rubberized and have a solid and stable feel to them. Very durable feeling and easy to type on. The touchpad is one of the best I have used. Your finger glides smooth and the response is very accurate. The buttons are also smooth to press. Overall there is no clackiness to any of the components and if feels very solid and well built. The screen may seem a bit small, but thats half the reason I bought it, this pc is very powerful and tiny so it's highly portable. The lid back has some rubberized coating or something so scratches and smudges are really non-existant. Screen is very bright and clear and while it's supposed to be glossy it is much more matte than most gloss screen. This is a huge plus imo as you get great clarity without sitting there looking at your own reflection in the blacks of the screen. Quick list of stuff I use that works perfectly smooth: Office 2007, Labview 8.5, Matlab 2009, Visual Studio 2005. It's a great productivity laptop with the potential to perform great and play all the latest games in decent graphics. As a final thought, I compared this laptop to the 2 lower end macs. You will find that the stats are really identical (processor, ram, graphics card, battery) except this laptop is several hundred dollars cheaper! Not to mention the free Win 7 upgrade! So for anyone considering buying one of these I hope this review gives you a better idea of some of the capabilities.

    Great all around laptop

IThis laptop is all around amazing. I switched from a sony viao and am yet to regret it. (convenience is only lower due to the lack of Disc drive) *I love this computer becaus it can keep up with me. By this I mean that when I click, it does it fast so I can do my next task. I hate laggy computers(my bros Vaio). I will go over all the specs with this laptop with you so here we go. Since i currently go to college in the computer field and I also work with them, I will go over some of the specs with you. Processor: Your average core 2 duo which runs well RAM: 3 GB DDR3 SDram which is not the highest yet it runs faster than my brothers bran new Vaio. ODD? not at all. new computers now a days add more ram to beef up the numbers so more people will buy then. the truth is they do not use up all the potential.. they do it because it is cheaper. They will put 4GB of ram with a horrible graphics card... this makes no sense but whatever is cheaper to the company they will ultimately do... *No disk drive - when i seen this i was confused. How do you have an amazing graphics card with no disk drive? truth is when was the last time you used a disk drive other than the occaisional games? I just bought an external drive in case i wanted to play a game or so(no big deal) Graphics card: Same as a mac!!!! this computer has everything a mac has and more!!! it can run some of the top of the line games on iT Battery life: I dont think the battery lives up to what they say but lets face it.... NO COMPUTER DOES. They all beef up stats, and this one is no different. It still has a great one though dont get me wrong. I think it is more like 4 hours. BOTTOM LINE: THIS COMPUTER CAN DO IT ALL: PLAY DEMANDING GAMES, UNBELIEVABLE PORTABLIITY FOR STUDENTS, RUN VERY FAST AND VERY EFFICIENTLY, AND DESIGN.

QUIET! BEAUTIFUL LED! FREE OFFICE 2007 AND NORTON!

    Posted .

I was very hesitant to buy this due to lack of DVD drive and NO memory card reader, but the price drop to 699 plus free external DVD player sealed the deal for me. I work full time and go to University full time, and after careful consideration, I do not remember the last time I used DVD drive on a laptop. As for memory reader, 18.99 dollars get you a real nice express card SD card reader on n3Wegg :D This laptop is quiet, barely audible in a quiet room, quiet enough to sleep beside it while on. Battery with wireless ON screen to FULL brightness and NO messenger running shows 5 hours battery life. Dimming it should give you an hour or so extra. I have always used 4 GB of DDR 2 ram on laptop before but this 3 GB ddr 3 feel just as fast if not more smooth than 4GB of DDR 2 memory. Memory usage while idle is 900mb to 1.3gb, what a surprise! no junk on this computer!. Free MS 2007 is nice but the most surprising is the Norton Internet Security 2009 which I avoided like plague for last decade due to the notorious system hog reputation from Symantec. However I gave it a try (15 month free installed on this computer) Norton 2009 is incredibly light on the system and barely use any memory and cpu resources! With MSN messenger running, listening to music, typing this review and Norton in background, Idle memory usage is 1298MB at the moment which is more than satisfying. LED is super super bright and beautiful. This laptop speaker is loud enough to be used in a conference room, rest assured everyone can hear it loud and clear. However beware if you want to upgrade ram, this 3 GB = 1GB built in on motherboard (not removeable) + 1 module of 2 GB (removeable). The ONLY upgrade available is to remove the 2 GB stick and buy a 4 GB DDR 3 stick which is around 300 at this time. Max on this laptop is 5 GB ram (DDR 3 ram use odd number of channel whereas DDR 2 use dual channel) However my 3 GB runs very very smooth, by the time I want to ugprade, it should be cheaper XD. I have not tried game yet but google user forum people have loaded and play call of duty on this baby. For video fanatics..MKV 1080P file on this laptop plays super smooth with no lag whatsoever. This Laptop does NOT have VGA but has display port like macbook does, no big deal, an adapter is only 16 bucks if I ever need it. I am very happy with this laptop, lack of optical drive has not bothered me at all, in fact making it light and thin and nobody in class can borrow your laptop to play DVD and drain your battery for presentation XD I been up all day and very tired, so this review may be all over the place, but I tried to cover most technical aspect of this laptop other review did not cover. Overall this is a must buy!!!!!!!!!

    Brilliant Display, Overall Good Value

    Posted .

I bought this machine as a replacement for a Toshiba laptop that was starting to show its age. The first thing that impressed me about this Dell is the stunning LED (not LCD) display (this impressed me in the specifications before I bought it). I was glad I chose a laptop with an LED display because of the richer colors the screen displays. Also, this screen is VERY bright. The nVidia 9400M Graphics give me a 4.7 Windows Experience Index rating which is excellent for a laptop at this price point! The Intel 4500MHD graphics on other laptops of this price range will deliver below 4.0. My only complaints with this machine are the hard drive clicking sounds (not that bad), there is no built-in optical drive (which is not a big deal for me), and there is no memory card reader (this is a BIG inconvenience for many people). Also, the keyboard is very good but the palm rest is not big enough for my hands (and I don't have huge hands). Otherwise, this is an excellent machine for people who need more than a budget laptop but do not need overkill.

    Good Deal

    Posted .

The Next Class bundles are great because they include MS Office and anti-virus SW in a small functional package with good battery life at a budget price. I chose the Dell Next Class bundle over the HP Next Class bundle for the following reasons: 1. It has an nvidia graphics card with dedicated memory which is way better than the Intel graphics accelleration dohicky that is in all the other laptops. Since it has the nvidia, graphics run 5 times faster on this machine and so having 4G memory really isn't necessary. 2. The LED will not degrade like the LCD screen will over time. 3. It has 3 Antenna wireless (BGN) and not just BG like the HP does. 4. The deal came with an free external DVD ROM which I don't really even hook up very often and so the battery life is better and the overall package of the Dell is small and light. 5. $50 cheaper than the HP even with all these advantages. I contemplated a netbook for a while but really, with all the bells and whistles the (exclusive to Best Buy) Dell Studio 14 had with the Next Class bundle w/ free external DVD ROM, it really wasn't even a close contest. My laptop so far runs fantastic. My only complaint is that the face recognition doesn't work all the time, but that's not really a serious issue. I'm normally hook up external memory by USB because memory cards are fragile and I never take them out of the devices. So not having a memory card reader isn't an issue for me. It is a budget laptop, keeping that in mind it's a super value with the Next Class bundle. I only rated it a 4 on Convenience because it is still bigger and heavier than a netbook, but still smaller and lighter than most laptops, and definately easier to carry digital versions of textbooks on it than a carrying a stack of books.

    Great!

I bought this laptop about a week ago and have only had one problem with it when I installed iTunes, did Windows updates, updated Flash and Java, as well as transfering data from my removable hard-drive, and browsing the internet on youtube... I was a payload for sure, and it just make it slow down drastically is all, but everything ran it's course as normal; still just a little slower. This laptop is great. It does not have a built in cd drive, but that actually to me is a good thing. It takes alot of battery power to keep that thing on, even when your not using it. And when I bought my computer, I got the external drive for free. It is super slim and portable as well. I just leave it in my bag and it's good to go when I need it. But my point being that we hardley ever need that cd drive anymore, so it's like you have the option to turn it off. As well as you get a thinner more portable computer. Back to the comupter. It is great. It had DDR3 RAM, so it is crazy fast with only 3 gigs, as well as the hard-drive being so large just replace my whole desktop HD, as well as my removable HD, and has still got about 125 gigs left on top of that. Bottom line this computer is great for college students, is ultra-portable, has a great graphics card, and is just all around a great machine.

    Great s Laptop

I love small design it is small enough for carrying around to classes but it is large enough for easy typing on the keyboard and a large enough screen. The screen is nice it is an LED backlit 1366x768 resolution screen. For a small laptop it has a lot of ports. 2 headphones, mic, esata, 3 usb, mini firewire, gigabit ethernet, display, and an hdmi port. I have used the hdmi to hook it up to my 56" hdtv to watch movies it looks great. The webcam is also pretty cool it has facial recognition so you can login just using your face. The hardware is very good for the price. A Core 2 Duo T6500 at 2.1ghz, 3gb DDR3 RAM, and a 9400m g graphics. The 9400m g smokes the intel 4500mhd which you usually find in this price bracket. It can play most games great WOW, and even the Tiger Woods Online Beta. Now don't expect to play Crysis but it can play most newer games at a decent frame rate. My only gripes with this laptop is the lack of dvd drive. It actually isn't too much of a problem because how often do you actually use a dvd these days. Most stuff I can just download or transfer over. Also the battery life is not as good as I thought it would be. It is more of a 3.5-4 hour battery life not the 5 hour it is rated for.

    Quality Computer

I bought this laptop for college. I got this because I saw it in the store and saw the nice size and feel, it didnt feel cheap. I have had this for about 3 weeks now and i have not had a problem with. Not doing anything on this comouter other then homework and surfing the web I dont need some of the upgrades this computer came with. However this computer did come with some nice features like the microsoft office home and student included in the price, and the upgraded 8 cell battery. The only cons of this system were the fact that it did not come with the portable disk drive needed to install the microsoft and norton. It also only comes in the ruby red color, it would be nice if it came in more colors. Other then that the computer has worked great and performed well. I could not be happier this computer is great

    Very Solid Laptop

This laptop is an overall great purchase. The offer at the time included a free optical drive so that really helps out. I really wish that there was a slot for media cards because that is becoming more important these days than an optical drive. The machine runs very well overall and I had no problems setting up WiFi and downloading the OS and software updates. The drive comes partitioned already so that good to not have to worry about. Windows 7 will definately run great on this machine when it comes out. I am also a little concerned about the left click button below the Touchpad. It doesn't respond very well and I am having to click it multiple times. This may be a minor defect that I will need to have Best Buy look at and possible swap out the laptop. Overall... very satisfied.

    best for college students

This machine is extremely great overall. The graphics card combined with the faster DDR3 rams make this a midrange gaming machine. No delay what-so-ever during start up. Probably 10 seconds is all it need before one is able to surf the net and open applications. Core 2 Duo is great. 45nm makes it a very cool duo processor. Only gets warm when gaming. The Geforce 9400M is almost like the desktop 8600 GT. The lack of built in DVD drive isn't an issue. I never use my laptop for DVD/CD anyway. Most disappointing is the lack of media card readers. The HDMI doesn't make up for this though... 3 USB is sufficient for casual users.

I bought this laptop for my first year in college and its performing splendidly. The fan is quiet, it starts up within 3 min or less, fast, and it doesn't heat up. I've had a few glitches with the touchpad but it works fine for the most part. The face recognition doesn't always work so I log in manually. The laptop died after about 2 full length movies (almost 6 hours) while on power saver mode. Its performance is just as great on power saver mode as it is on high performance mode. Overall, its a great buy for students with basic needs especially with the preinstalled features from Best Buy.

I bought this laptop for school and so far it serves me well. I did quite a bit of shopping around and the dell was a really good value. For 699 you get a decent core2 duo processor, DDR3 RAM, better than average (integrated type) GPU, and office installed. You really can't beat that. Having to buy an external DVD drive is a small sacrifice. This laptop is really overkill for what I'm using it for anyways. I wonder, tho, why this site doesn't list this Dell's windows version as 64bit like it lists all of the other "Next Class" laptops. The version installed on it IS the 64bit.

I bought this computer because the Asus mini I have been looking for is on backorder until the end of time... And I'm actually really happy that it was. This computer is great in all aspects. I only wish there was a memory card drive so I can upload my pictures directly versus having to download the program from the camera... (but I think I can add that myself?) The keyboard is easy to use, which is important to me when I'm taking notes and typing somewhere around 100 words/minute. Great buy...
